I will never fully forgive shadow the hedgehog for locking a critical bit of character lore, the conclusion of his subplot they began in heroes... to dialogue that only happens if you fart around and waste a bunch of time in the final boss fight.

Because of the way it's program, that voice line is only heard in the true ending boss fight if you are still fighting 8-10 minutes in. In a boss fight that typically takes under 5.
I think the 2000s Dark Era is like a singular gaping stab wound to the 2010s Dark Era's punching a guy while he's down. One hurts more, but the event is short-lived. One hurts less, but only cause it's gone on so long you're numb to the pain.
Sort of off topic, but my younger brother was the first one in my family that got into Sonic and we recently discovered that the Sonic we grew up with wasn't the Sonic we grew up with. To explain, my brother played some of the Jason Griffith era Sonic games during the time that Roger Craig Smith was voicing Sonic. They sound similar enough for us to have completely mistaken Jason for Roger, so we discovered that the Sonic for our generation wasn't the voice we were hearing. I still love Jason and Roger equally, because they both shaped what Sonic should sound like. It's just hilarious that we unknowingly grew up with a different Sonic than the mainstream Sonic at the time, while also constantly talking about how Roger Craig Smith nailed the voice of Sonic.
I dont think there was 3 Sonic dark Ages instead only 1 stretch from 2011 to 2016 because Sonic 4, Sonic Lost World, and Sonic Boom were such a mess. I think that Sonic 2006 and Sonic Forces are much better games than some claim them to be. The peak era we are currently in is almost overwhelming that we are getting so much stuff at once I just hope that they focus on quality rather than trying to push out a million Sonic projects at once.
Free riders is good if your erase the kinect and lost world and 4 could have been much better. Lost world visual ins't that bad if you look, the problem is just the story and the glitch

I think Dark Age fits thematically. It was the age of the darkest, grittiest Sonic stories. With lots of heavy metal. So even if the Boom eta was SO much worse I still like the name.

6:30 We keep saying this but we have to realize the sales numbers for this game haven’t been updated since 2007. It’s the same deal for many other games in the franchise, sales usually aren’t updated 5+ years after the game came out. That being said, i’d be willing to bet one (maybe even both) of the adventure games sold more just because they were available on more platforms across different generations. Alongside the fact that, among the general public and fans, it seems like people remember the adventure games way better than they do heroes.

I'd argue that you have to look at sonic in 3 different lights: classic sonic, 3D sonic, and mobile sonic. for classic sonic, the dark age was from sonic & knuckles through advance 1, then from sonic colors ds to sonic cd mobile and the rise of the whitehead game peaking at mania, and now is just casually coasting with okay games with origins and superstars. for 3d sonic, we had 2004, when sammy bought sega, until generations. I'd say the 3D dark age started with heroes, having inconsistent quality among consoles, dividing the fanbase based on which console you played it on. sonic 06 really had this issue too, being a buggy mess. generations was the first game everyone really liked, but then we got boom and through forces that were a dark age for 3D sonic until frontiers. and then there's mobile, which are games like runners, jump, dash, and speed battle. these are the games that follow typical mobile freemium design philosophy and are live services. I wouldn't put dream team here, as it is more of a premium game locked on a subscription service. I'd count dream team as 3D sonic.

Seven Rings would be a beloved game if it wasn't for the controls; the graphics aren't bad for the wii, the story is fun imo, the illustration cutscneses are beautiful despite being less impressive, and most people forget but it came with a whole mario party style side game built into it. Having lived through the height of Sonic Fandom on Deviantart, I gotta say that there was some equivalent to gen wunner mentality pretty much up until Boom. Ironically despite hating on the grand plots; S&K was beloved for pretty much for having one. Of the Dark Age games, the only one I found truly unenjoyable was Dark Brotherhood (14 yo me regretted spending my allowance so hard). The meta era for me was personally the least enjoyable period due to the wank of it all; Colors had enough going for it but stuff like Generations and Sonic 4 didn't bring enough to the table with the graphics feeling lessed polished (4 for obvious reasons). The release of Boom coincided with my time majorily playing 06 and while I think it would've been a great new IP with more time on the oven, it flattened Sonic's world horribly. What makes the Renaissance work I truly believe has to do with pandering to Dark Age fans; the storylines, dynamics, music, and animation basically ripped from the community I was a part of. Even the less than great reception of Forces; I don't think of as a bad game because the amazing sections of Shadow Generations basically repurposes Forces levels.
For me, the eras are: Genesis Era (1991-1994) Genesis refers to the console, but it also refers to Sonic being SEGA’s new mascot. Missing in Action Era (1995-1997/8) No major Sonic games for the Saturn. Dreamcast Era (1998/9-2001) New 3rd Party Era (2001-2004) Dark Age Era (2005-2009) The reputation of the franchise wasn’t super great. Pseudo Renaissance Era (2010-2014) Things got better, but some games weren’t that great and Sega was taking the wrong lessons from the Dark Age era. Boom Era (2014-2017) Post Rise of Lyric Era (2014-2019) I believe this game, when it caused Sega to lay off many employees or whatever, it’s what caused them to have less faith in Sonic. Brand/Post Movie Era (2020-As of the making of this comment)

Forces could’ve been a huge hit. Sonic plots usually aren’t super interesting but Eggman winning and the team fighting to take it back was dope ( SatAM vibes of course). I still don’t know what happened aside from the novice level designers.

You're most recent show is ending, and you have 2 crappy games; one on home consoles and is very buggy, and the other exclusively released on GBA, complete with screen crunch, poor audio, and an "anniversary mode" where all that changes is that you can now spin dash! As time goes on I have began to respect the lesser-liked games from the 1990s and 2000s. I actually think they have a lot of great ideas and are just held back by a few questionable decisions. I decided to buy Shadow the Hedgehog again in 2021 and aside from a few cheap enemy placements and some of the levels being very long I actually really enjoyed the game. I liked the level design and seeing what type of routes I could take, and most of the tedious missions are optional anyway. Plus, I enjoyed experimenting with all the guns and seeing which ones were the best. Also it could be because I’m just familiar with the game but I felt the plot was pretty good as well. There are some plot holes but most of it just comes down to the game’s open structure. My only real complaint is that the multiplayer is a one-and-done affair.
We need Project Shadow to happen at some point. It is surprisingly solid as-is and there are so many easy changes to make that can really bring out some latent greatness.
The boom area to me, is the true dark age because of how Sonic was seen and how the games were. Not only that but the only really good thing we got from the boom area was the show. Besides that Boom was just wasted potential from the beginning to end
The reason why 2005-2009 was the dark age was because of the dark themes that some of the games had. Like Shadow the Hedgehog with its profanity, Sonic 06 with its tone, Sonic Unleashed with Dark Gaia phase 2 alone makes that part of the dark age. I'd say none of the games are bad except for 06 and Shadow, they all just had that eery tone in that era.
I will forever curse the bad localization practices for how people still can't shut up about something that does not even exist in the original script of Shadow.
God man, 2014-2019 really hurts internally. I also gave up on the franchise during this time because I never cared for Sonic Boom, Forces felt like the biggest stab in the back after Sega tricking us into thinking the game would be just like Colors and Generations, and Team Sonic Racing was one of the most souless games I've ever played. It even felt like Sega was giving up on the franchise because there was no care being put into these projects, only doing what would make them a quick buck. Boom was meant to be this ambitious next generation Sonic game with a serious story but the whole thing had to be reworked because Sega struck a deal with Nintendo AND the Boom cartoon was aiming to be comedic so the whole story and game had to change to what Sega wanted, not the developers. The game was never even supposed to be on Wii U to begin with... Archie gave up on Sonic after over 20 years, Toy stores gave up on Sonic because the Tomy products were complete ass compared to the Jazwares figures and nobody was buying them, and Sonic was even meant to go to PC and mobile only because sales numbers weren't the same anymore... this was all just really fucking sad man
My biggest problem and despite I have with the 2010s was that 😂 the story was too childish and lighthearted instead being a little serious and dark like I get there’s sonic toys and merchandise sells for kids but all we care is if the story and gameplay is good.
Sonic 06 was never in "development hell", quite the opposite in fact. When something is in "development hell" it's basically not given attention at all, and ignored to the point where most games in development hell never get made. Sonic 06 was rushed and sent out incomplete because stockholders in SEGA wanted it out within a certain time window (I'm pretty sure it was for an anniversary date) despite the devs saying it wasn't going to be ready, the people who were rushing it just didn't care, they only cared about sales. Sonic 06 was a failure because of corporate greed. And as far as Sonic Chronicles: Dark Brotherhood, that had nothing to do with Bioware being acquired by EA, though that didn't help matters. What happened there was Ken Penders 😑 after Dark Brotherhood did one of his stories better than how he pitched it to SEGA, he got pissy and sued them for copyright infringement, and that led to a very messy time in Sonic's history But yeah, Sonic's gone through a lot, I'll agree with that 👀

I think that we'll most likely have another dark age. I would love to be wrong.
For me, the eras are:
Genesis Era (1991-1994) Genesis refers to the console, but it also refers to Sonic being SEGA’s new mascot.
Missing in Action Era (1995-1997/8) No major Sonic games for the Saturn.
Dreamcast Era (1998/9-2001)
New 3rd Party Era (2001-2004)
Dark Age Era (2005-2009) The reputation of the franchise wasn’t super great.
Pseudo Renaissance Era (2010-2014) Things got better, but some games weren’t that great and Sega was taking the wrong lessons from the Dark Age era.
Boom Era (2014-2017)
Post Rise of Lyric Era (2014-2019) I believe this game, when it caused Sega to lay off many employees or whatever, it’s what caused them to have less faith in Sonic.
Brand/Post Movie Era (2020-As of the making of this comment)
Sonic Unleashed was a good game and the soundtrack is top tier ❤😫😫🤌🤌

Forces could’ve been a huge hit. Sonic plots usually aren’t super interesting but Eggman winning and the team fighting to take it back was dope ( SatAM vibes of course). I still don’t know what happened aside from the novice level designers.

We all know if Paramount kept movie Sonic's original design the movie would have flopped and we would be still be in the dark ages.
As time goes on I have began to respect the lesser-liked games from the 1990s and 2000s. I actually think they have a lot of great ideas and are just held back by a few questionable decisions.
I decided to buy Shadow the Hedgehog again in 2021 and aside from a few cheap enemy placements and some of the levels being very long I actually really enjoyed the game. I liked the level design and seeing what type of routes I could take, and most of the tedious missions are optional anyway. Plus, I enjoyed experimenting with all the guns and seeing which ones were the best. Also it could be because I’m just familiar with the game but I felt the plot was pretty good as well. There are some plot holes but most of it just comes down to the game’s open structure. My only real complaint is that the multiplayer is a one-and-done affair.
We need Project Shadow to happen at some point. It is surprisingly solid as-is and there are so many easy changes to make that can really bring out some latent greatness.

The boom area to me, is the true dark age because of how Sonic was seen and how the games were. Not only that but the only really good thing we got from the boom area was the show. Besides that Boom was just wasted potential from the beginning to end

The reason why 2005-2009 was the dark age was because of the dark themes that some of the games had. Like Shadow the Hedgehog with its profanity, Sonic 06 with its tone, Sonic Unleashed with Dark Gaia phase 2 alone makes that part of the dark age. I'd say none of the games are bad except for 06 and Shadow, they all just had that eery tone in that era.
I will forever curse the bad localization practices for how people still can't shut up about something that does not even exist in the original script of Shadow.

God man, 2014-2019 really hurts internally. I also gave up on the franchise during this time because I never cared for Sonic Boom, Forces felt like the biggest stab in the back after Sega tricking us into thinking the game would be just like Colors and Generations, and Team Sonic Racing was one of the most souless games I've ever played. It even felt like Sega was giving up on the franchise because there was no care being put into these projects, only doing what would make them a quick buck. Boom was meant to be this ambitious next generation Sonic game with a serious story but the whole thing had to be reworked because Sega struck a deal with Nintendo AND the Boom cartoon was aiming to be comedic so the whole story and game had to change to what Sega wanted, not the developers. The game was never even supposed to be on Wii U to begin with... Archie gave up on Sonic after over 20 years, Toy stores gave up on Sonic because the Tomy products were complete ass compared to the Jazwares figures and nobody was buying them, and Sonic was even meant to go to PC and mobile only because sales numbers weren't the same anymore... this was all just really fucking sad man
Sonic forces, colors, lost world, and boom (video games) were in my opinion the worst. Every other game and show before and after that were good.

My biggest problem and despite I have with the 2010s was that 😂 the story was too childish and lighthearted instead being a little serious and dark like I get there’s sonic toys and merchandise sells for kids but all we care is if the story and gameplay is good.

Sonic 06 was never in "development hell", quite the opposite in fact.
When something is in "development hell" it's basically not given attention at all, and ignored to the point where most games in development hell never get made.
Sonic 06 was rushed and sent out incomplete because stockholders in SEGA wanted it out within a certain time window (I'm pretty sure it was for an anniversary date) despite the devs saying it wasn't going to be ready, the people who were rushing it just didn't care, they only cared about sales. Sonic 06 was a failure because of corporate greed.
And as far as Sonic Chronicles: Dark Brotherhood, that had nothing to do with Bioware being acquired by EA, though that didn't help matters. What happened there was Ken Penders 😑 after Dark Brotherhood did one of his stories better than how he pitched it to SEGA, he got pissy and sued them for copyright infringement, and that led to a very messy time in Sonic's history
But yeah, Sonic's gone through a lot, I'll agree with that 👀
Honestly, I really don't think Sonic 06 is as bad as people say it is.
We're so used to unfinished games in '24 it makes 06 look acceptable. Back then you couldn't release a buggy or broken product. You got burned alive.
