Grateful Dead - Friend Of The Devil (Oakland, CA 7/24/87)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 14 жов 2024
- "From the penultimate show of the Dylan & The Dead tour on 7/24/87 in Oakland, the Grateful Dead perform an upbeat, perfectly and smoothly executed Friend Of The Devil in the show's first of three sets. This slower-tempo Friend Of The Devil, as compared to the upbeat rendition from American Beauty, was introduced in 1976, and was how the Dead played the song until 1995." - David Lemieux

Sleepy version. Well done, but I much prefer the few I saw from Alpine east that summer
MY dad was at that show
Lemieux LOVES the word "penultimate" lol
Thank you for posting something, that’s not already on the channel. Let’s keep it going! ☮️
Robt. Hunter said that this song was a 'classic'.
Stopped here February 2024 to check out this great song☆anyone else liking this slow version?
I like it more than the faster version!
Jerry was such an amazing guitarist, what a force of nature. Those tasty rhythms and fills he played with that fingerpicking style are sooooo good. I miss seeing him and watching the magic as it happened; it was a great ride for me from 74 to 95 but it somehow doesn't seem long enough! RIP JJG ❤
The Grateful Dead community endures.
I certainly cherish too my friend
Brent shreds on that piano solo! Nice!
really only Wakeman may be better?
@@PaulFormentos Seen Wakeman live, was pretty freaking amazing. But it's hard to judge on skill, it's about preference.
Saw Yes and Dream Theater as my first concert. Pretty amazing now that I look back on it.
Some of Brents best work ! I love the Grateful Dead forever...
Just here to shout out Jerry’s flannel. It suits him real nice.
It looks like it ran him about $7 at the local Salv. Respect
He's the perfect imperfect person.
Just like all of us!
Fresh laundry just another luxury of doing a run of shows from your home barn
The nights spent in the arms of The Dead will never be forgotten. Rock on.
Muchas Gracias por compartir el video de esta canción fenomenal. Viva Grateful Dead una de las bandas de la música rock más grandes de todos los tiempos.
about as perfect as perfect can be...
Brett Midland was an Mind Blowing Artist
Thank you so much for posting.
So glad this was released, since it didn’t make the cut for the View From the Vault DVD release !! This and Me & My Uncle > Big River were cut out apparently to make room, and 7/26 was on the same release
One of the few songs he did regularly with both The Grateful Dead and JGB (the others being Sugaree, Deal, and They Love Each Other). IMO, the slow version beats the fast version Hearing the slower arrangement [as performed by Kenny Loggins (Betty Cantor-Jackson was recording Loggins & Messina, and Loggins would open their shows with a few songs on his own, including-at least on the occasion of her recording them, a recording Jerry likely heard-a slow Friend Of The Devil)] caused Jerry to adopt this slower arrangement and start performing the song again.
Wow cool
i gotta disagree with you on that, the song is wayy better played at its original tempo
Brent was fantastic in the hot seat. RIP
Hope you all had happy days
Beautiful
Thanks for this post.
The Dead is not my favorite band, but sometimes they hit the spot better than anybody/anything.
Excellent tune again and again from The Grateful Dead 😎
What amazing musicians! Thanks for sharing.
How beautiful and delicate!
Perfect ❤
Wow! What a great version!
This one's for Robbie!
LONG LIVE JERRY!

@@BeckyWithrow Hi Becky!

Charlotte , N.C. and you?@@BeckyWithrow
I worked all weekend, but I'm on vacation starting Friday! (not allowed to complain)@@BeckyWithrow
Not bad at all. Hope you are enjoying your day.
i have an unused ticket for this show (from Bass/Ticketmaster)... I knew a guy who 'scalped' tickets for dead shows that summer. he had one 'left over' that he didn't bother to sell, so he gave it to me weeks after the show.. i still don't talk to him 😂
I don't get it, bro. Why are you so filled with spite? The man was only trying to get by the best way he knew how. All he was doing was spreading love, and you dis him for that? Even Jesus had to eat. Call your brother, and reacquaint
@@NotDeadYETTTT no spite bro, you don't even know what you're talking about, k..he was a scalper who loved ripping off deadheads by getting top dollar for tix, he wasn't a deadhead, he laughed at how much he got for his tix, that's why he had an extra as he couldn't sell it for enough money, so he just kept it.. he thought deadheads were dumb..so , i remain not in contact with him for many reasons...
@larshamilton40 OK. I get it I stand corrected. Thanks.
@@larshamilton40 LOL "... he thought deadheads were dumb..." ummm you do realize that you proved him right don't you?
Nice solo Brent
May 2024… just saw a street singer hit this song! Ah the days!
Miss him….
I fucking love you Brent
Brent got down on it in ‘87!
Devil with the blue dress, blue dress, blue dress!!!
❤

Wow, Bobby's Modulus Strat is other-worldly.
He certainly had quite a collection going there in the late 80s.
Half their songs pur me to sleep when not spinning but beautiful regardless
Tell ‘em to turn it up Bobby
Tell em Brent!!!
Dead friends love u
✨⚡💀⚡✨
Love you ❤Jerry
I was tripping one day in the woods and Jerry said to tell you all Hello !
The mid-80s Twilight Zone segment, "Nightlong" brought me here.
saw this tour in Buffalo with Tom Petty. i believe it was the beginnings of the #TravelingWilburys
❤❤❤
Yeppers, turned 53 this year and had a biggest health scare of my life.... Definitely thought of Jerry being 53 back in 1995, I was 25 with well over 140 shows under my Tie-Dye by 95... Jerry looked pretty worked by 1995, guess he partied like a Rock Star...
Peace Jerry Garcia ❤💀🌹💀🌹💀🌹
What's up juniper. Its little Jimmy from the trash crew
@@julirichmond3 Getting ready to celebrate the New Moon....I remember you guys and worked a few late night cleanups. Thanks for checking in. Much Peace💚💚💚
Upload the me and my uncle/big river from this show
Phil got all of his flannel shirts from Maine LL Bean in Freeport Maine so I guess he got Jerry one also because I never saw him in one ! When he had shorts on I said I never saw him in those but I saw him naked ! How sweet it was ! 🌹🥀☠️💀🐊🩵👻🧚🏼🧚🏿♂️🧚♀️
Great song... great version!
Bobby rockin jorts 😍
Me and my brother were there, and I just lost him last week
Sorry to hear of your brothers death. 😢 May he Rest In Peace.
@@joelfrombethlehem thank you very much, we were huge deadheads back in the day over 150 shows, great memories
Sorry for your loss my friend.
@@bobbysunshine3458 thank you so much
RIP brother.
May the four winds blow him safely home.
Betcha a dollar Bob`s wearing tighty whitey`s! LOL!
Did the Dead ever tour or record with Miles Davis?
Brent looking a little zombieish here but was straight going off on those keys son!
I much prefer the faster version of this one. Still highly enjoyable though.
I like it the regular way 😂
Jerrrrrrrry❤
Can somebody build a Time Machine so I can back and listen to Jerry
Grateful Dead I have a question is Jerry Garcia is available to play some music for someone that’s my question for you and I am one of your favorite fans I like your music don’t forget that I was telling my dad,s brother Mike about your music
Feeling as if I were blind😢
Jerry ❤ your kids will follow you home
Go on alone or he will come 2 take his keiki home😅
I'd bet money l was at this show, does anyone know which venue it was? The Coliseum or at the Kaiser? Sure do miss Jerry, hardly a day goes by without thinking of a show or song.
😢
I Love teddy bear Trucker Jerry ...
I bet Jerry and Brent had the best smack money could buy.
Brent means it too.
IWT. a bunch of us drove down from tahoe.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
There wasn't a lot of people who could play that long
it always bothered me how slowly they played this song live. i can't find any videos where they're playing the song at the appropriate tempo with the passion and sense of urgency that they had on the record.
the guy in the white shirt in the wings is my dad
2024 we are all dead 🤟🤘
What is the meaning for this song -devil.. is.. a ..friend.. of ..mine- I guess im trying to understand it more
This is an old folk tune and the meaning is what you make of it but generally with the dead there is a lesson embedded in the song. In this case its the trouble and lack of rest you get when living the wrong kind of life.
ran into the devil he loaned me 20 bills
6:37
Jerry was just 45 here?
they guy in the back on headset is also singing
Jerry was the best!
extra terrestre ?
At 2:17 Yeah Jer you f&*ked up the lyrics
New hampshire
Arches
But who’s the devil?
the only thing I did not like about the grateful dead was the songs where they continuously repeat the lyrics at the end of the song (it’s like zen: they loved it and yet I’m wanted them to play those instruments) and yet I still listen
Does jerry immediately flub the lyrics ? Lol
Looks blew out way past prime
brent mudlan puttn down
sovet union seed not grow now wASHINGTON DC CAN WEATHER WAS GOOD SICK TB LESS SEED DEVLIMONT
Kind of like Frank Sinatra, I never really understood the mystique of the Grateful Dead, neither made rhyme or reason, but then again, maybe it's me.
Let me quess, Elvis Presley!? 😄
@@Louis-ef4eb How'd you guess? Sinatra was brutal and contrived, Jerry Garcia looked and sounded like an unmade bed... maybe a one hit wonder at best(I can't even think of the song's title, not bad tune)
@@RememberMe123-b4b That unmade bed was a major tourist attraction for 4 decades! They will talk about Sinatra long after you're gone. 😄
Its definetly you dude
@@DavidAcevedoAlvaro ok, pls explain why Grateful Dead are so"great", other than one song their others are just word salads, no good beats, not deep, Jerry Garcia not entertaining, just stands there.
Jerry Gar-CIA
This is *not* one of their best performances of FotD! Jerry’s barely treading water here. Sometimes folks just don’t see it.
Jerry's treading water is still better than most on a good day! Undeniable!
He messed up the lyrics a ton in this
Yeah, swapped verses. The devil took his $20 first, then the next verse the devil loaned him the $20. Maybe the devil realized he needed to pay him back after stealing the first 20! 😅😅
🌹 Promo'SM
This one seems forced? ... don't crucified me
Thank you jerry I’m glad dead and co are done I hated hearing Mayer and weir butcher jerrys music
Jerry would be so happy at Dead and Co keeping the good times rolling.
Yea uh huh great times alright especially financially mr weir is almost a billionaire after selling the dead out to Walmart and other corporate entities
Man, Mayer really was not my bag. Bland soulless theatrical singing over more soulless guitar playing for as technically adept as it was.
Jerry was the worst member.
@@mikeneidlinger8857 Did it make you feel better?
why doesn't anyone write about the fact that his lyrics are dangerous? in Poland a young girl died because of his music, this band is dangerous
wow,,,,,,
What?
