Grateful Dead ~ Rubin and Cherise, Orlando 4-7-91

- Arguably the best of the 4 times the Dead ever played this tune, and only in 1991. Home video footage mixed with a higher quality soundboard audio source.
Cherise was brushing her long hair gently down
It was the afternoon of carnival as she brushes it gently down
Rubin was strumming his painted mandolin
It was inlaid with a pretty face in jade played in the carnival parade
Cherise was dressing as Pirouette in white
When a fatal vision gripped her tight Cherise beware tonight
Rubin, Rubin tell me truly true
I feel afraid and I don't know why I do, Is there another girl for you?
If you could see my heart you would know it's true
There's none Cherise, except for you, except for you
I'd swear to it on my very soul, If I lie, may I fall down cold
When Rubin played on his painted mandolin
The breeze would pause to listen in before going on its way again
Masquerade began when nightfall finally woke
Like waves against the bandstand, dancers broke to the painted mandolin
Looking out to the crowd who is standing there
Sweet Ruby Claire at Rubin stared, at Rubin stared
She was dressed as Pirouette in red
And her hair hung gently down
The crowd pressed round, Ruby stood as though alone
Rubin's song took on a different tone and he played it just for her
The song he played was the carnival parade
Each note cut a thread of Cherise's fate it cut through like a blade
Rubin was playing his painted mandolin
When Ruby froze and turned to stone for the strings played all alone
The voice of Cherise from the face of the mandolin
Singing Rubin, Rubin tell me true for I have no one but you
If you could see my heart you would know it true
There's none Cherise, except for you, except for you
I'd swear to it on my very soul, If I lie, may I fall down cold
The truth of love an unsung song must tell
The course of love must follow blind without a look behind
Rubin walked the streets of New Orleans till dawn
Cherise so lightly in his arms and her hair hung gently down
The greatest guitarist who ever lived.
I was there. Every minute was magical
i wish they had played this more. such a magical song.
it's amazing how deadheads and the music are still flourishing despite the break-up in '95.
peace to all.
this song should have a billion views
One of the GREATEST love songs ever written!!!
One of Hunter's best lyrics, IMO...
"Cherise so lightly in his arms..." I LUV the imagery...
Nice, but the Breeze listenin in? Hard to top.
As a deadhead for the past 25 years, I only recently discovered this gem of a performance. Wild!
Like waves against the bandstand, dancers broke ...
this song brought my son around after our house burned down, he didn't 'hear' us, til Jerry sang...
thanks again & forever Jerry!
...and bless Dan Healy for giving the tapers access to the soundboard...unheard of in today's industry...
I was a taper since 81 Healy could be an a-hole Sorry to say your incorrect More bands than ever allow soundboard plugs nowadays Either way keep listening
Miracle he could remember the lyrics to these tunes. Lots of 'em.
my girlfriend of 5 years loves this song. she just broke it off a week ago, and this brings tears to my eyes.
Saw Jerry perform this on a solo acoustic tour
(maybe '81 or '82)and got chills up my spine. This vid does the same for me right now! If I lie may I fall down cold....
"each note cut a thread of Cherise's fate" DAMN!
one of 2 times I got to see the band in Florida while I lived there. I woke up that morning and said "screw it, no tickets or not, I'm driving over to see if I can get a ticket" The 90 minute drive from Brandon was worth it! I was 8 rows back on the floor.
Damn !! Good score dude !!!! :)
Holy shit I’m jealous
a great choice !!
I wasn't at this show, that's not me you hear at 3:18. I saw the Dead a bunch of times but never got to hear them play "Reuben and Cerise", but I can tell you this: At a certain point the music does indeed play the band, which gives this energy to the audience, which gives it back to the band, who gives it back to the audience. Synergy and Symbiosis. The last five minutes of this little gem capture an energy that can only be experienced by looking at the person next to you at that particular show with a tear in your eye and acknowledging the power of the present moment..."This is really happening..." The "Wow" factor. This is sometimes called "magic".
I dont think anyone thought it was you larr
That is a magic song. I couldn't even imagine being there to hear this.
5:40. a heavenly melody....keep going Jerry....!
One of my favorite songs. Now I finally know the lyrics--and it is even better!
I was at Landover for the first one. The crowd's reaction was INSANE!!!
The breeze would stop to listen in......chills still run down my spine- Only played A handful of times by the dead, However, it resonates in my soul forever.
This is why we went
I never forget the pure joy&excitement of being there on the right night.Magic!! I miss you Sugaree,Ray&Laura J.
one of my all time favorite Robert Hunter tunes, classic example of his under-rated style and songwriting ability
Such a romantic song by this band.
Garcia's guitar work and vocals just add to it.
My god what an absolutely perfect song. Hats off to Garcia and Hunter and may they both RIP (Rock in Peace) ❤✌🙏
I saw the Grateful Dead 106 times and this only once and one time with JGB.I love it
He and Hunter. Poets. They get me through. 35 years SO FAR
This and landover was the bomb. Spring 91 was a great tour
Bonnie “Prince” Billy sent me here. And here I have been for the past two hours.
Otherworldly songwriting.
This song has created quite an impact on many people. You can see how Jerry influenced the UA-cam folks who cover this. There's even a cover by some guy playing it in the passenger seat of his car.
RIP Jerry. "The breeze would pause to listen in"
What a magnificent song -- Hunter's storytelling at its mythic best. I confess, though, I do wish Jerry had kept the original ending intact -- where Reuben descends into Hades, like Orpheus, to retrieve his lady love, but makes the fatal mistake of looking back as he carries her away -- we finally see him walking through the night streets of New Orleans, "with the ghost of Cerise in his empty arms / and her hair hung gently down . . ." One of Hunter's most haunting and memorable images.
you're welcome. I watch this video from time to time because I know it's a good one like you do and I love comments like these. Thanks
im only 16 but my dad's been a grateful dead fan his whole life. so i've grown up listening to them. and i'm finnaly really starting to get into them. going to see the dead this summer :D
Such a beautiful song with great lyrics... "The truth of love an unsung song must tell. The course of love must follow blind."
Perfect tempo
omg this is an amazing version I'm a 21 year old baltimore native I have dreams of past lives jamming to Jerry, love what dead and co is doing, I recommend all dead heads to download deadhead archives on android, such an amazing app. as a younger dead enthusiast it gives me a chance to catch dead shows that were b4 my time
Brian Cameron Check out JRAD my dude :)

RIP MY BROTHER HOLMES
Joy is the proper definition I believe!
I remember this show vividly. my fiance and I flew down from Chicago. Jerry was in a great mood all concert. like the alpine valley and telluride days of old
Love this sons soooo much....words can't describe.
I guess when I first listened to the Grateful Dead I never stoped. Such a painful saga to watch, and all for us-Thank you Jerry
this has been my favorite video of this song for over a decade. So much intensity and sadness.
I was a t this show and it is one of my top GD memories of my life. The acid was clean and the second set was flawless. It took me to such incredible heights I can't even explain. The Morning Dew at the end touched my soul like nothing ever has before. Really it was such an amazing night. You know I have never been able to find a recording of it to this day. Maybe such memories are better left untainted.
Jerry Garcia R.I.P we will never ever ever again see another soul like him. A true one of a kind. Without Jerry Garcia and The Grateful Dead the world would be a terrible place. What A Long Strange Trip Its Been.
If you could see my heart, you'd know it's true. There's none Cerise, except for you.
This brings me such tremendous joy...and profound sadness at the same time..how is that possible
I'll never get enough of this.
Wow...I Don't know what to say...reminds me of a much simpler time. I hate to admit it but I'm crying like a baby.

Wow, no shuit? Only four times? It's amazing this exists. This takes the edge off a lot of harsh shuit life throws at us. These shows were the best form of revival. Thanks for sharing. Until I read the lyrics I never realized how tragic the story is. I thought it was a sweet love song until today. You rock Hunter! Thanks GD.

Vince's keys work perfectly for this song
Great performance! Love the gothic Garcia! My first show was Boston garden 1980, now I just listen to the early and and the seventies live stuff but this really rips! Sending love out to the universe friends.
