    No words can describe this version. The clarity is sick. The Dead just keeps going. The best band ever.

    Absolutely smoking version. One gift of better sound quality, or just older ears, is hearing Bob’s rhythm guitar. He paints on this one. As usual. Thanks so much for sharing. 🙏

      That's the magical mystical sound I fell in love with 50 years ago and no matter how crappy my player, no matter how beat up and worn out my records and 8tracks and cassettes became, that sound always came through. This is a nice walk down memory lane for me.

    Bobby’s guitar adds a great dimension to this version - and the lock-tight backup vocals by Phil and Bobby really make it. These guys are fresh off recording American Beauty an Working Man’s…they knew they could sing - and they did!

    Much gratitude Mr. Rothenberg! You can hear they're enjoying presenting this, trim execution + sprightly solo bits. I love they way it starts to "open" around the 9:30 mark...classic GD "the floor is open" to go any which way...then at 13:07, how Garcia plays that descending line that would show up later in "Help on the Way/Slipknot!", before they all return (mostly) to the EOTW harmonic terrain. Their musical/band maturity & telepathic interplay is on full display here--to the point that this "new" song comes off as something they've had under their belt for years. Outstanding!

    WTF: How can the first version be this perfect! I remember in the 80s the early versions of the new songs -- pretty rough. But this is stunning. Reminds me of the perfection of that first Rat from 71. There is a Greek myth of a goddess who was born fully formed from Zeus' head. Such is this. 2-15-73 is likewise tres awesome. Thanks Michael. This version may be my most played GD song via YT (though Veneta's BirdSong is right up there).
    This one has forever remained atop my list of all time favorites of EOTW, along with two that I personally saw 8/6/74 and 9/3/77 (with that Jerry intro mimicking George Benson (to my ears). For what it's worth, this day had me at the Academy of Music in NYC, 3,000 miles away seeing probably the best version of Traffic.

    • @TransitiveNightfallofDiamonds
      @TransitiveNightfallofDiamonds 9 місяців тому

      Never thought of the George Benson connection before for Englishtown. But you are totally right. And the timing is right cause Breezin came out just a year earlier. The second solo from Englishtown has an unbelievable set of lightning fast chords near the end, followed by a beautiful lead line of pure jazz tonality.

I think they must have gotten it pinned down pretty well within the next four to six months. (Now I have to go and see if I can find a first version of that!)
