    Really enjoyed your presentation of the Mora 106. I have been woodcarving for over 50 years, as far back as when I used to spend time in my father's gun shop as a kid and teenager. For some reason, with all my carving knives, I never got a 106 to use. I have been thinking of buying one lately, especially for greenwood working. Your video was very informative and helpful. Thank you. Just a note about the wood staff. I think what you might have is the same wood as they make stair treads from, which around here I think they call it Carolina pine. They look alike and seem to have the same character. You are doing a great job on shaping it and I don't think you could use anything else to get the detail you are. Even using a rotary or power tool would probably end up chipping the wood and be hard to have as nice looking stick. You just have to keep pecking away at it, but you will have a very strong and useful staff when finished. I look forward to your videos as they come out.

    My first mora came to collage in a suitcase from Sweeden. Lars Larson gave them out to dorm mates. Laminated. 1975. Wow time flies!. Great handle shape for sure!!!!!!!

      You should make one for around the homestead....there evil hawks around you know...lol. really is a good way to just sit and relax and whittle away. Handy to have.

    Great little knives. I love a Mora knife. Very reasonably priced. I bought a knotty pine board for a project that had the same dark yellow hard sap wood in an alternating grain pattern. I was difficult to mill.

    Mollie(?) is afraid you take too much time with the (admittedly beautiful) walking stick and not taking time with her ;-)

    The thickness is pefect (2.7mm. Thickness is between the common Companion,Kansbol etc models and the Garberg/Bushcraft Black ones. Scandi grinds suck when the blade is thick,because of their geometry that thickens early and stays all the way from the edge bevel, to the spine, as thick as the spine is! That being said, around 3mm, is the way to go,for either woodcarving or bushcraft tasks in the outdoors.

    • @2ndchancegeorge
      @2ndchancegeorge  4 місяці тому +1

      Yep, The scandi doesn't work as well on them thick ones. Figuring that out the hard way...lol. thanks for the info and support. Be safe out there

    Great job on the video George, I make walking sticks, I had the same problem with the same wood ended up chucking it. I get hard wood from now on, also use mora knives. You might get some wood burs for your Dremel loads off fun and very effective.

    • @2ndchancegeorge
      @2ndchancegeorge  4 місяці тому

      Yep thinking about that. My Dremel skills are lacking to say the least...lol. thanks for watching

    Hard to walk about at freeze to thaw. My flooring handle wood is too hard to whittle. I tried to split a groove. As it dries the groove opens. Stabilizing after bringing into house is important! I cut the wood too large. Sheesh bowwinkle!

    If you like the 106, I highly recommend trying the 105. It has the best handle.

    I'm not sure what type of wood this is, but the alternating light and dark lines represent growth rings. If I'm correct, the lighter rings indicate spring growth, while the darker rings indicate summer growth. Summer growth is characterized by slower growth, smaller cells, and greater density compared to spring growth.

    Change the angle on your carvers, the little carvers are ran at like 9-10 degrees per side or like 12-14 degrees if they are chisel grinds and it can't support the applied pressure at that low of a angle. Micro bevel the carvers very lightly to around 12-14 degrees for V bevel or 16-18 degrees if it's a chisel edge. You will notice a little degradation in carving preformance but it's gonna stand up to the hard wood/high pressure being applied much much better.

    • @2ndchancegeorge
      @2ndchancegeorge  4 місяці тому

      I need a better sharpening thinggee. Lol. I want to get one of those arc sweep ones where I can set the angle better. As you know my sharpening skill need some work.....alot of work...lol.

    Good knife review George. I would love to make my own hiking staff. I have a nice pine stick I found in the water along a mountain lake a number of years ago that had to come home with me. I don't know if it long enough or where to begin to make it into a staff. Any examples, ideas or guidance would be appreciated. Take care

    You mixed things up. The carving knives 105/106/120/122 do not come in stainless (except the one with the plastic handle). They come in carbon and laminated steel. And you have the laminated. If the blade is carbon or stainless these words are stamped on the blade. If it says nothing, then it is the laminated steel version (3 layers).
