If you watch Cetera sing, he barely opens his mouth. He was punched in the mouth at Dodger stadium in 1969 and had his mouth wired shut for months. In fact, he recorded 25 or 6 to 4 with his jaw wired shut. He was always afraid to open his mouth wide after, but it gave him time to start writing songs. An incredible voice and a not bad bass player too.

Peter Cetera sings lead. After Kath died the edge was taken into big ballads

The band changed ALOT after Terry Kath died. More slow/love songs. Still had a shit ton of hits and no wonder...awesome harmonies, great lyrics. One of those bands that are timeless.

If you think about it, they did "Wishing You Were Here" and "Color My World", and many dialed back ballads. They could handle both ends of the spectrum.

I recommend to listen the original album version "Hard to Say I'm Sorry/Get Away". Those songs together show both sides of Chicago, the soft rock band and the big band.

This song is from the 80s era where their producer dis couraged the horns and highlighted Peter Cetera more. Don’t worry. That is only a percentage of their music. They did that for 3 albums. They have 38 albums and their horns came back.

There are/were a few different lead singers including Peter Cetera. One of my ALL TIME favorite groups! LOVE the horns!!! Had a crush on Jimmy Pankow, the dude that plays trombone!

The fact is that there were 3 lead singers that took turns carrying melodies and harmonies for the group. After Terry past away, Peter began to emerge as the voice of Chicago until he left for a solo career. Others have come and gone. The group continues to tour today with Robert Lamb and most of the brass section still there. They have had at least 38 albums.

Yes, after Terry and venturing into the early 80's it was quite a different tone, but still AMAZING!!!! Chicago is just Chicago!!! One of the best bands ever!!!!! Although it's never been discussed, but I believe this song is a tribute to Terry..... his passion and love for his craft.....😢

Great band from the 70's-80's. They were a rock & roll band with horns & blended elements of classical music, jazz, R&B & pop music. They had a lot of great songs such as "Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?", "Beginnings", "Questions 67 & 68", "If You Leave Me Now", "Saturday In The Park", "Colour My World", "You're The Inspiration", "Will You Still Love Me?", "Look Away", "Old Days" etc.

Terry Kath, Robert Lamm, and Peter Cetera were all vocalists in the 70's Chicago. Peter sang 25 or 6 to 4. After Terry's passing, they tried to capture the same sound but with the music evolving their records didn't sell. Columbia dropped them from their label. They made changes and signed with Full Moon records and used more outside influence (session musicians & writers). Thus, they became a softer rock band and had success through the 80's. Two different bands in two different decades with one name Chicago. BTW, they were originally called Chicago Transit Authority but had to drop their name to Chicago due to legality issues. On "Hard To Say I'm Sorry" there was a more 70's ending (horns) to this song called Getaway but they faded it out in the video.

There is/was an added bonus at the end of Hard to Say I'm Sorry called Get Away (it usually accompanied the song when played on the radio). It's a very upbeat and sounds very similar to the "old" Chicago. Look it up and check it out.

I always loved this song along with You're My Inspiration. ❤ I know it's not the same as the earlier Chicago hits but they didn't have to sound the same on every song. I love both eras. 😊

I always like the early Chicago stuff, but I think they tried to change with the times. It’s still awesome music. I can listen to this any day. Great reaction. As per usual

But most rock bands have their ballads. Even Kiss had "Beth" and Alice Cooper had "I Never Cry". A good rock band always has a great ballad up their sleeve.

One more thing. U didn't listen to the whole thing. Do yourself a favor .....listen past where u think it ends. They start REALLY jamming. Its the favorite part of the song to me. Its only about 2 minutes long, you'll love it!

Stick with the Terry Kath era -- There are still so many songs you haven't listened to yet from the 70's. "Just You N Me", "Old Days" "Beginnings" "Saturday In the Park" "Dialogue Part I & II" "Wishing You Were Here" "Does Anybody Really Know What Time it Is?"

If you were a fan of Karate Kid 2, you'll recognize singer Peter Cetera's anthem for that song "Glory of Love"
Yah by the end of the 70s the big horn addition to bands like Chicago and Tower of Power were kinda dropping off and going to a more synth soft-rock sound / top40 / adult contemporary aka "Dad Rock" sound - BUT Chicago was one of the best in that era with a ton of hits.
Foreigner followed that trend, as did Genesis, even Boston with songs like "Amanda" becoming their big hits, and Starship, and other bands that transitioned from a more rock and roll to a more subdued glam rock soft rock appeal. Hell even Def Leppard did with Hysteria album in 87, and Journey with their Raised on Radio album in 86.
It went from a more grungy, jam band sound of the late 70s to a more refined posh and glam sound in the 80s which the pendulum swung back again in the 90s when Grunge rock shattered the glam and glitzy look and sound of the 80s rock.

The funny thing for me is that since I was born in 76, this is the Chicago I knew. It wasn't until years later that I realized all their stuff wasn't corny Peter Cetera songs. If you want to delve into ultimate cheese, try Cetera solo. LOL. I will admit that he has a good voice, but some of those songs .... yikes!

Better staying with the Terry era... Unless you have a need for pop... Great stuff BUT totally different... I was lucky enough to see them four times live but never once with Terry. Great shows to take a lady to but it still doesn't compare to the music they produced with. Terry...

Chicago went full on pop when Terry Kath died. Early Chicago is the only Chicago that I listen to. Peter Cetera has a nice voice but this music lacks the soul or creativity of the Terry Kath era, in my opinion.

Early Chicago is great. Later Chicago is great in a different way. Apples and Oranges. I like both but if you want to limit yourself go ahead and squawk about how you are a pure blood and stick your nose in the air about certain groups - but it sounds an awful lot like pretentious virtue signaling.
