I believe each iteration of the riff consists of the first four (five) ascending notes played on the guitar twice-then transitions to the bass where it is played repeatedly until that iteration is completed.
This was the only Yes song I knew growing up in the 1980s. It wasn't until the last few years that I discovered the "real" Yes, and boy, they are so much more than this.
Well, Yes is one of those bands that you have ese into. This is a good start, but you have to hear "Roundabout", "And You and I" and "I've Seen All Good People". Then you will be ready to take on "Close to The Edge" and Siberian Khatru". Jon Anderson's voice is unmistakable and Rick Wakeman on keyboards takes you to places you didn't know you could go. Chris Squire and Steve Howe are absolute masters! Check out their induction into the R&R Hall of Fame with Geddy Lee (Rush) sitting in on bass playing "Roundabout".
This was my pinnacle growing up song!!! Lived my life back in the mid to late 80's idolizing this Mastery!!!! Thanks for reacting, love watching your reactions to songs us oldheads grew up listening to... 😊😊😊😊 Always chasing after that Gem, we were so primal back in the day... Hehehe FULL OPEN MOUTH, LOVE IT!!!!!!
This video was in the early years of MTV and at some point they thought the more bizarre videos would help sell the songs. Music itself doesn’t need any gimmicks
Yes has a good early hit song in “Roundabout”. During my high school years in the early-1980s, our high school marching band would play this song during football games. Another hit song/music video by Yes from their “90125” album, is for their song, “Leave It”. I would like to see you react to the music video, when you get the opportunity to do so.
The current guitarist Steve Howe isn't an original member, but he was in the band all throughout the '70s and was responsible for a MASSIVE amount of their music.
When it comes time for you to expand on YES, especially Roundabout, and working towards Close to the Edge (entire album), you Really Really need headphones.....
The article mentioned the band "Asia" that keyboardist from Yes (Geoffrey Downs) was part of. Asia had some great sounding songs. Their entire first album was amazing 80s rock music.
You got to go back in the wayback machine. Forget the '80s completely different... And I was lucky enough to see this tour live and it was really cool but I still enjoy the classic stuff
This song is one of my favorites- to really get a feel of what they're all about, you have to go back to the albums Fragile, Close to the Edge, etc. Their 70's material was groundbreaking. That being said- this song is an amazing evolution of their sound. Love it 🙂
If I remember right, the band said they had no input into the video, and the video doesnt really have anything to do with the music. I suggest skipping their 80's videos and see videos of them performing live in the mid and late 70's. Their 80's stuff on this album is great, but their best stuff is mostly from the 70's starting with The Yes Album. I've never heard it called dance rock, though they did edit a few songs into alternate versions for dancing. They are mainly known as a prog rock band that had some pop/rock hits in the early 80's. Do Roundabout next.
If I was asked to classify this song, I'd say, Progressive Pop. If you want Classic Rock flavored Yes, check out Roundabout. Chris Squire is heavily credited for being a major influence on Rush's Geddy Lee.
JUST BEFORE JOINING YES RABIN WAS IN A BAND CALLED THE BUGGLES WHOS SONG VIDEO KILLED THE RADIO STAR WAS THE 1ST VIDEO EVEF PLAYED ON MTV.... U REALLY NEED TO CHECK OUT ROUNDABOUT AND LONG DISTANCE RUNAROUND , BOTH OFF THE FRAGILE ALBUM
Steve Howe join Yes on their third album, entitled The Yes Album as the lead guitar player. Producer. Songwriter. Also, if you want to really understand Yes you really need to listen to just their studio albums. You need to react to "Roundabout." It is FIRE!
OMG! WHO TOLD U to PICK THIS 80's SONG by YES? This is them with new members being totally commercial. This song was their big Hit BUT THIS IS NOT THE GREAT 70s YES mentioned in the movie. 70s YES were unconventional groundbreakers of complex virtuosity that blended classical, jazz, folk, psychedelic, ambient and funk. They are deeply respected, worshipped and considered to be THE GREATEST GROUP EVER by many so you MUST 😢 do YES again!!! Try the song ROUNDABOUT from 71
This is 80’s YES. Weird video. Great band. Jon Anderson is still alive and making music. You should watch their RnR HOF induction performance and speeches.
The 60s '70s, and 80s still rule rock - now the youngsters will carry that 50-some-year-old plus perfect music past when I die, it will absorb and last longer than any other music genre. So all is good - I can't spend more time with this kinda great music than I have time left. There is so much. Even Plant is running up on 80 VOTE - save yourselves - soon - always remember VietNam and Kent State - we are forgetting I fear
Check out the 70's Yes. That is where their best stuff is. They have 3 albums where every song is fire. Fragile, The Yes Album and Close to The Edge. You should probably go with Roundabout next because it is their most well known song and maybe best that is debatable. Many will ask you to listen to Close to the Edge which is a masterpiece but its 18 minutes long and you need to listen to a few of their other songs first to build up to it.
Love song from them. Now a child of the 80s, I realized that directors would have weird concepts. A lot of money to spend too, so who knows what anyone was thinking. Maybe there is a meaning but I have no idea what it is.
Great reaction and analysis!! This is newer Yes and considered "pop"...but it's still very good. Roundabout is an absolute banger, that you should check out. But...another song from this album, you might like, is Leave It. Give them a listen...see what you think.
Video takes away from the song to me. Many more good hits on this album. This song is my current ringtone lol and I saw them in concert during this tour. Amazing!!!
They are awesome live but the studio cuts are great too, only because you can hear individual sounds better. Gotta listen to the song Roundabout. The entire album, Fragile, by Yes is awesome and each song flows perfectly into the next. This song, Owner of a Lonely Heart was a huge dance club song...at least the ones I went to.
Great song! Yes are an English progressive rock band formed in London in 1968. The band has undergone numerous line-up changes throughout its history, up to nineteen musicians have been full-time members. They have had a lot of great songs such as "Roundabout", "Starship Trooper", "Going For The One", "Masquerade", "Yours Is No Disgrace", "Heart Of The Sunrise", "The Gates Of Delirium", "And You & I", "Close To The Edge" etc. Sadly drummer Alan White passed away recently.
It is an okay song though they have so many legendary progressive rock tunes. They are the top of Mt. Rushmore of this genre. Songs you need to react to and I believe will love are Round About, Heart of The Sunrise, Perpetual Change, And You And I, which is my favorite. Steve Howe who joined the band on YES’s third album and is the only living member to be with the band. You will also be interested in doing the song America which is a Simon and Garfunkel original done in their own unique style!YES were at their best from 1969 through 1980 and with their original lead vocalist Jon Anderson. You were hearing Chris’s unforgettable bass riff which had an almost lead guitar sound to it. Chris and Jon’s harmonies were among the best ever in the rock/ pop genre! The video was over produced and nonsensical though the song itself is rather good.As an old man from that ‘70’s era we used to by the whole album back then and not just singles because there were so many great tunes on each one.Back in the early 1960’s and again in today’s music world singles are what sells though not in the 1970’s and a good portion of the 1980’s!
This is a vid made WAY after the song came out back in the 80's. Hard for you reactors to choose the 'proper' studio track, I realize. But sometimes you can get totally confused by these 'after the fact' fabricated vids. The actual song has none of these crazy conceptual interuptions. Yes has gotten way too prog at times, but they DO have some fab songs along the way. Enjoy the journey...T PS: This album (90125) introduced them to a whole new 'MTV Generation' with an updated sound. It's actually a VERY strong album...
The video doesn't really make much sense. It takes away from the song. YES is the greatest progressive rock band in my opinion. I just subscribed. I subscribe to anyone who reacts to them as will many other YES fans so keep them coming. Loads of greats including "Roundabout", "Awaken", "The Gates of Delirium", "Close to the Edge", "And You and I", "Turn of the Century", "Starship Trooper", "Perpetual Change", "The Revealing Science of God", lots more.
Love this song - hate the video, LOL. The pause in the middle is TOO random and totally breaks the groove of the song. That, and the video is so esoteric it takes away from the musicianship (IMO). That said, I bought the album purely based on this song and it was one of the better album purchases I made - the whole album is FIRE!
A lot of these 80s videos were supremely goofy and have little to do with the music. In many cases they were produced by a 3rd party with little input from the band. They were eye candy at best.
I like your channel and your approach, but FFS, if you're going to check out yes, why do one of their worst songs ever? Their MTV era.....this band is one of the most innovative, musically gifted bands ever. This is not how I think someone should be introduced to Yes.....
DO ROUND ABOUT! Then do I’VE SEEN ALL GOOD PEOPLE.
I believe each iteration of the riff consists of the first four (five) ascending notes played on the guitar twice-then transitions to the bass where it is played repeatedly until that iteration is completed.
Roundabout is their early progressive rock era. It is a must for beginner Yes fans to start.
This was the only Yes song I knew growing up in the 1980s. It wasn't until the last few years that I discovered the "real" Yes, and boy, they are so much more than this.
Well said! MUCH MORE
Roundabout, I’ve Seen All Good People and many other good Yes songs!
Roundabout!!!!
Well, Yes is one of those bands that you have ese into. This is a good start, but you have to hear "Roundabout", "And You and I" and "I've Seen All Good People". "Is that the guitar or bass on that riff" Yes, yes it is.
This was my pinnacle growing up song!!! Lived my life back in the mid to late 80's idolizing this Mastery!!!! Thanks for reacting, love watching your reactions to songs us oldheads grew up listening to... 😊😊😊😊
Always chasing after that Gem, we were so primal back in the day... Hehehe
FULL OPEN MOUTH, LOVE IT!!!!!!
You started off with their best one.. so many great memories listening to this.... 😊😊😊
The entire "90125" album is fire.
This video was in the early years of MTV and at some point they thought the more bizarre videos would help sell the songs.
Music itself doesn’t need any gimmicks
Roundabout is a must. You’ll love it 🔥
Yes has a good early hit song in “Roundabout”. During my high school years in the early-1980s, our high school marching band would play this song during football games.

Their song "Sound Chaser" will BREAK YOUR BRAIN! And "Heart of the Sunrise" will teleport you to an alternate dimension.
The current guitarist Steve Howe isn't an original member, but he was in the band all throughout the '70s and was responsible for a MASSIVE amount of their music.
Awaken and close to the edge are there best tracks in my humble opinion.
Asia was a supergroup potential with a super flop. Far below the expectations that so many fans had hoped for.
You got to go back in the wayback machine. Forget the '80s completely different...
And I was lucky enough to see this tour live and it was really cool but I still enjoy the classic stuff

The title's actually: "Owner of a Lonely Heart"
or, according to Rick, owner of a horse and cart
JUST BEFORE JOINING YES RABIN WAS IN A BAND CALLED THE BUGGLES WHOS SONG VIDEO KILLED THE RADIO STAR WAS THE 1ST VIDEO EVEF PLAYED ON MTV.... U REALLY NEED TO CHECK OUT ROUNDABOUT AND LONG DISTANCE RUNAROUND , BOTH OFF THE FRAGILE ALBUM
Mmm, not Rabin. Geoff Downs and producer Trevor Horn.
I always loved the song, from when it first came out, but I'd never seen the video before. I could have done without it.
Steve Howe join Yes on their third album, entitled The Yes Album as the lead guitar player. Producer. Songwriter. Also, if you want to really understand Yes you really need to listen to just their studio albums. You need to react to "Roundabout." It is FIRE!

In School of Rock Jack Black tells the kid to listen to the keyboard solo on Roundabout.
Just wait until you get to the song Close to the Edge, off the album of the same name. Pretty much the Bible of progrock. Have fun!
This is 80’s YES.
Weird video. Great band.
Jon Anderson is still alive and making music.
You should watch their RnR HOF induction performance and speeches.
Leave It by Yes is a banger .
Yours Is No Disgrace from The Yes Album, you won't be disappointed

I'm with the gang, do roundabout. Then do all good people. I love you show and I love me some yes. Brought back a lot of good memories.❤

You are in for a wild ride.
Roundabout! Roundabout! Roundabout! Roundabout! Roundabout!
Did I mention Roundabout?! 🔥

YES! YES! YES! YES! YES! YES! YES! YES! YES! YES! YES!
The live version is fantastic.

Close your eyes. Skip the video and just listen to the music.
This video is so cheesy, lol. Love the song though!
I think listening to early Yes is what it's all about. Starting off with Owner of a Lonely Heart? Oh well
Great song! Yes are an English progressive rock band formed in London in 1968. ROUNDABOUT! Please start there…NOT Live. Start with the album cut.
Roundabout Brother!🤘
Starship trouper is a must listen, one of the live versions preferably.
Oh yes, do Roundabout please. Much more representative of the band's sound.
Leave It, Roundabout
It is an okay song though they have so many legendary progressive rock tunes. They are the top of Mt. Rushmore of this genre. This is Yes part two. Go back to the original. ROUNDABOUT ! ! !
Part two... Thanks for the chuckle!
Good song, they have better, you WILL be blown away by the suggestions in the comment section.
This is a vid made WAY after the song came out back in the 80's. Hard for you reactors to choose the 'proper' studio track, I realize. This is my favorite song by them even though the video is strange
It was a huge hit, despite the video.
DO ROUNDABOUT!

Music videos suck, why do people request them, or reactors choose them, it takes away from the music, especially for first impressions
Um, about the name of the song... ☺️
Check out Phil Collins' Land of Confusion for a wild music video
owner of a horse and cart
Ummm... Roundabout!
*This is not the song to begin an exploration of the great band YES*
Love this song - hate the video, LOL. The pause in the middle is TOO random and totally breaks the groove of the song. That, and the video is so esoteric it takes away from the musicianship (IMO). That said, I bought the album purely based on this song and it was one of the better album purchases I made - the whole album is FIRE!
When MTV aired the music video, they would start showing it during the pedestrian bridge scene.
The video is better than the song.
A lot of these 80s videos were supremely goofy and have little to do with the music. In many cases they were produced by a 3rd party with little input from the band. They were eye candy at best.
Could not have picked a worse Yes song to react to first. So pop and commercial. Dumbed down music for MTV.
I like your channel and your approach, but FFS, if you're going to check out yes, why do one of their worst songs ever? Their MTV era.....this band is one of the most innovative, musically gifted bands ever. This is not how I think someone should be introduced to Yes.....
I know so sad, but ya can't un-ring a bell... What's done is done...
Video killed the radio star for real. Some of them actually ruin the songs!
The video is too distracting.
