Mastering Holding Pattern Entries is EASY

- Here I show a 3 step method to be sure that you are making the most efficient entry into a holding pattern even when you don't have a moving map in the airplane.
First you visualize the hold, then you verify the guess using the "thumb method", and finally you think in front of the airplane using the 5 T's. In flying, if you catch a mistake before it happens it didn't really happen.

The best video explaining the Holding Pattern topic. The graphic in this video is such a great addition to a new pilot to understand the logic. Thank you for your efforts.
I was taught the King School method of drawing the hold and the entry diagram. Same concept but your method allows for visualization on the gauges that I'm already looking at and is less distracting. I don't want to have to draw when I'm in a busy IFR environment. If nothing else it is another tool in the IFR belt to crosscheck the entry. Thanks for putting this video out.
Jason, another great video! I wish I could say that it is "easy" to see the hold, but I haven't found that muscle memory spot yet. I will be playing and pausing this video to try and build the muscle. Thanks again for these great tip vids!

I'm going to give this a shot. I have newer avionics and use a garmin gi-275 for HSI/CDI. Its different than an old crusty DG or gi-106 mechanical CDI
For anyone using Ralph Butchers book, dont get confused when Jason instructs to find the outbound heading on the outside of the compass card. Ralph instructs to follow the inbound leg (the radial which =outbound heading) from the perimeter of the compass card. Slight mix up of words, correct in both cases just explained differently.
Awesome explanation! Just a quick question, must the heading you read from the DI be the heading you must take in order to fly direct to the fix/station?

I really like the visualization method. Also, to the best of my understanding, simple mental math can also work. For right hand hold, if my InBound Course (IBC) toward the fix is between the radial and the radial-70 than teardrop. If my IBC is between the radial and the radial+110, than parallel. All else, direct. For left turns hold, if my IBC is between the radial and the radial+70 than teardrop. If my IBC is between the radial and the radial-110, than parallel. All else, direct. So for right hand pattern, if your IBC is 300 and you are to hold on a 330, the IBC is between 260 (330-70) and 300, therefore teardrop. If my IBC is 360 than the IBC is between 330 and 70, therefore parallel.
Another way to think of this, which is more in par with the visualization method is for right hand hold, if my radial is if the radial is within the IBC+70 than teardrop. if my Radial is if the radial is within the IBC-100 than parallel. All else, direct. For left turns hold, if my radial is within the IBC-70 than teardrop. if my Radial is if the radial is within the IBC+100 than parallel. All else, direct. Let me know what you think

I am thankful for the graphics overlay in showing how visualizing the turns on the heading indicator should work! That said, it would be more helpful to show the thumb method than to just say "use it" - makes no sense if you don't already know what it is / how it works. The few times someone has tried to explain it to me never made any sense, so this video didn't really help in that regard. Still, overall it was helpful and I appreciate the effort you put into your videos and podcast!
I myself had issues Visualizing holds on the dg, my CFII had me drawing it out on paper which is fine however what helped me out was I downloaded an app IFR hold trainer and practice practice and now it’s cake. Good luck.
I get that. Have you seen the older video on this channel specific to the thumb method? ua-cam.com/video/YbIw6kdytnU/v-deo.html It's really just a rote way of confirming. In the example I use in this video the outbound heading is 330. The thumb method simply divides the HI into 3 sectors and wherever that outbound heading lies will determine / confirm what kind of entry I'm already seeing. I hope that between these two videos it starts to make more sense for you. I didn't want to go too deep into it for fear of repeating the older video.

What do you mean by left add right subtract? Doing instrument training now and I get confused sometimes as to whether I turn left or right for teardrop
If you're flying the "wrong way" but toward the holding side ... it will be a teardrop entry. You can visualize on your heading indicator. We always use the outbound heading to visualize / confirm the holding pattern so the left add / right subtract thing is that you will add (or subtract) 30 from your outbound heading to get the heading that cuts most efficiently across the pattern. In left hand patterns you'll add 30 and in right hand patterns, subtract. This is just for the entry. once in the pattern you'll fly it as normal.
The Finer Points thank you for clearing that up. This so much easier than drawing it on a knee board with my instructor breathing down my neck wondering if the neurons in my brain are working
In a standard holding pattern (right turns) I remember there is an R in teaRdRop so that will be a Right turn. There are L's in ParaLLeL, so those turns will be left. Reverse it all for non standard holding pattern. Also to help remember, your turns to enter the holding pattern will be into the PROTECTED side or area. The holding side and entry turns are ALL into the protected area.

I'm several hours into my IFR training with a CFII. I'm more confused about holding patterns now than I was before I watched this. I just can't visualize it, I guess. It's funny. I flew 3 very good ILS approaches today with little help from my instructor, but I just can't seem to understand a simple holding pattern. He drew it on a whiteboard and explained it a couple of times. I just don't understand and it's frustrating.
your not alone. Video quality and effort are great and I appreciate free help and I get what hes putting down but from the orientation without seeing yourself in relation to navaid on here it just seems like you made a direct entry each time without doing the mental gymnastics to place yourself correctly. Also explaining the LARS a little more or showing an application would help. Either way hope you got what you needed for your cert
@@Potatosaurusrex1 I'm ready for my checkride, but I contracted a terrible case of Covid19 and was sick for a month. Don't know when I'm going to feel up to finishing. I'm still pretty weak and have some mind for. Im not going to fly at all until that clears up.
Outbound or inbound? This could have been helpful but I’m getting frustrated on why he’s calling the inbound the outbound.
iPad with charts... digital displays.... nice to know these things.. but - modern technology is quite beneficial to give you this automatically.

It’s great when you nail the selection of sector entry (teardrop), get to the fix and just turning outbound like your in the hold already, instructor looks at you and goes what are you doing man? whose an idiot, this guy 😅😳
So I have been explained this many times the most common is the pen tilt method. I have seen the hand/thumb method but in this case there is no demo of using the thumb simply the 3 sectors so how are the pilots going to confirm without actually showing the technique? Sorry weak presentation and explanation on this very crucial intercept technique.

@@Mike-cx5dn Watch some of the other videos out there on holds until you understand it. Then come back here. This is how you'll want to do it, quick and simple.
Slow your speech. Having knowledge isn't the best time to speed.
