In this video, I answer the request to expand on the flight maneuver called the Lazy 8. This maneuver is not required by the Private Pilot certificate but it is on the Commercial Pilot ACS. However, I use this maneuver regularly during pilot training to make sure that pilots understand how the airplane will over the bank during a slowing turn. There is no other maneuver that demonstrates how this works. Fly Your Best!

I commented when I first saw this video then I practiced it with precision on the first try. I showed my CFI and he was very impressed. He said it's not fair that you can do this so easily and everyone else struggles with it including him. He tried it and loved the technique. 2 Thumbs up again.

Ric P Exactly. My checkride is next week. This maneuver seems the most difficult, in addition to chandelles, although they are a bit easier. My instructor did not teach it this way, although she did say to be veeeerrrry laaaaazy, sooooo laaaazy, 😆 with the maneuver! I’m really glad to have found this video and the one on chandelles. For some reason I don’t seem to have much of a problem with eight-on-pylons.

Hey Jason, thought I'd share a quick update. I went for my CFI initial checkride last week and guess what maneuver I had to teach on the white board for Area 4... That's right, the lazy 8. It's really funny because this maneuver was the one I had the most trouble with during my Commercial training. Now and thanks to this video, it is the one I enjoy flying the most and I think it will be a lot of fun to teach as well. The DPE was pretty impressed by my performance. He mentioned that the #1 issue he sees over and over with pilots and CFIs is too much bank at the 90 degree point, i.e. over-controlling the airplane. That didn't surprise me one bit since I had that problem too initially. Anyways, just wanted to thank you once again for sharing this video. This is such an elegant maneuver when flown properly. Oh, and I passed on the first attempt :-) Looking forward to teaching.

So you didn’t mention with your technique when the aircraft slices through the horizon and you have released your back pressure how does the airplane go back to level flight? Do you have to physically roll the aircraft back to level flight at the passing of the 90° point?

Thank you for this video, it really helped me get my lazy 8's nice and lazy! However, a question for the pro: My DPE was not happy that I used the smallest amount of aileron when recovering at the end of the maneuver on the correct heading. Is it even realistic to expect a Cessna to somehow roll itself back level, on the correct heading and altitude, with NO aileron input? It's not how I was trained, and no one has ever corrected me for using a little aileron to make my maneuver precise. Thanks for all you do!

I’m not a pilot (however, I’d like to be one), maybe I missed it, what is the purpose of a Lazy Eight? Why would we decide to use this pattern..to kill time waiting to land?

  • @mathieuweiss5636
    @mathieuweiss5636 3 роки тому

I have to disagree here. This maneuver is about finesse, meaning nothing drastic. The pitch is way too high and abrupt. I go with no more than 6 degrees pitch in cold WX and 8-10 in warmer WX. Also, If the plane naturally loses vertical lift in a turn, then there is no need to release all that back pressure to "slice" through the horizon. The plane will do it automatically. This way, you are able to control the airspeed on the back side of the maneuver. Just my humble opinion.

I never understood why this and most of the other silly maneuvers in the commercial checkride were ever required? I learned them enough to pass the checkride and haven’t thought about them again in the last 16 years. Unless you’re going to be a small plane flight instructor for the rest of your life, don’t get too wrapped up in it. Learn it to get past the checkride and don’t think about it again.

Lazy 8s with my CFI today! Interesting that for students who struggle with this maneuver he teaches it the same way you demonstrate here. Essentially start with slight bank and pull using only rudder to stay coordinated. It’s going to take some practice to nail the airspeed at the bottom\180 but I was fairly successful hitting the altitude bogey to both the left and right. Interesting that you basically just controlled the pitch and rudder(rudder especially to the right) and the amount of bank would take care of itself, I had trouble nailing the airspeed on the finish but if I had remembered that my pitch pressure would have controlled that, that might have worked out better, especially since I think a little a/speed leeway is ok as u finish, it was the one maneuver that gave me trouble but I did OK on the ckride, I loved fwd slips as a side note, lol

Slips are underestimated as a far quicker and more sensitive way of losing altitude , with far more control of the outcome than flaps .Together with lateral displacement they may give a pilot better control in chancey situations . Trouble is , passengers get a bit antsy when the ship is not in coordinated flight !

Lazy 8 are not taught in Europe. Now I know such thing exists, I'll try it by myself of next time ☺️

Ordinary Matt it’s a great maneuver to teach over- banking tendency in a slowing turn - try it! 🙌

I fly out of RHV and Calaveras is pretty popular with both arrivals and departures from there. I'm a little surprised this area is being used for flight training. Do you have any tips to keep me from swapping paint with training aircraft over Calaveras? Is there a typical altitude I should avoid when I'm coming through that area?
Also, very informative video. I never knew that's how Lazy 8's were done.

No no no, Jason! You are supposed to do a **lot** of work in the lazy 8's! Only kidding. :D What a great example of doing a little as possible and not getting in the way of the natural aerodynamics of an airplane. I hadn't done a lazy 8 in about 15 years and had to give this a try. My second one was perfect.

So this is my 5th time watching this video probably will watch it a lot more, the more I rewatch the more I see little details that I missed, like the fact you literally don’t do anything, it’s like water flowing and you just guiding it’s direction and the whole 90 degrees, can you use you me heading bug to back up it up or has to be done outside ?

What's the correct RPM to start pulling ?

  • @pilotcritic

This is NOT the way to do a lazy eight in accordance to the FAA standard. You should have approximately 15 degrees of bank after 45 degrees of turn and 30 degrees of bank at the 90 degree point. After the 90 degree point the bank angle should start to decrease. He is all over the place in this video, he hits 30 degrees of bank after only 30 degrees of turn (but lies and says it's 90), continues to steepen the bank during the descending portion of the turn when he is supposed to be rolling out. Yet people are impressed? Sure it's easier when you do it wrong.

What are you talking about? This is 100% how you fly a Lazy 8. You accuse me of lying when you can't even see the 90-degree point to start? When I say "maybe a hair more" we're coming through the 90 point at 30-45 degrees of bank. That is why the FAA says "approximately". The last thing they want you to do is try to fly very specific bank angles and fail to "feel" the airplane or anticipate the secondary effects of the controls. That's not the point of the commercial maneuvers at all. I've put so many students through their commercial and heard from so many people that they have passed their check rides with compliments from the examiner using the very technique. I love this maneuver and you have taught it successfully for over 20 years. You should watch the video again. Especially the one to the right and watch the heading indicator, pause the video, see the bank angle and the lack of effort in the control inputs. This is EXACTLY how you fly a Lazy 8.

@@TheFinerPoints I thought I was pretty clear. You reach 30 degrees of bank and the max pitch after less than 20 degrees of turn. Max pitch is not supposed to happen until the 45 degree point at which point your bank should only be about 15 degrees. I can see your heading indicator and magnetic compass. You are doing these way too fast and you are not timing your pitch and bank correctly. Review the maneuver in the Airplane Flying Handbook again. This is not the correct way to do them. As far as your experience, you do not hold a monopoly on that. I too have been doing these for 20 years.

And a 45 degree bank is not approximately a 30 degree bank. Wow.

Jason, can you post videos for how to perform the other commercial maneuvers? I know you already have one for the Chandelle. It's beautiful. Can you make videos for eights-on-pylons, steep spirals, and Power-OFF 180 to a runway TD point? Would be awesome to get your breakdown on those. Thanks man!

Thank you so much, you have explained it very clearly. I just flew some lazy 8s following your advice. Now I understand how they are supposed to work it is so much easier. Yes, very Zen, relaxing. I’m flying a LiteFlite Dragonfly. In a lazy 8 it needs only light pressure from fingertips on the stick. The right hand turn is a little trickier. If I apply enough right rudder to centre the ball it tends to overbank. I need more practice.
