  • Expanded or Cellular PVC is often used in signs or house trim, and it can be cut easily on a CNC. Here's an example of making a simple sign using Carbide Create, some readily available SVGs, and the Shapeoko.

This video was perfect timing. Just given several 12’ x 4’ sheets. I always doubt my feeds and speeds. Thanks so much.

Nick at RunCNC turned me into this material. They sell 4x8 sheets at Home Depot. It’s less dusty than wood which I like.

@ManCraftingTM How do I find this product at Home Depot? Which general area would they stock this? Thank you

I work in a sign shop and this stuff is used on a daily basis, theses are the bits I use, HOZLY 3.175X2X12mm Left Hand Single Flute Downcut Spiral Bits High Efficiency Cutting Wood Acrylic Aluminum Plastic Plate Pack of 5 for $20 on amazon. No need for tabs or tape I shoot a couple brads on the corners and the shavings keep the parts in place. but you need to use a climb cut otherwise you will have lots of edge cleanup. .0625 depth of cut and 150 to 200 ipm.

Do you know what kind of paint and or primers would work ? It's for indoor use but still needs to be scratch resistant and pretty opaque. (60mm tall colored letters for use by kids in school)

@@geekoid183 I use rust-oleum that says also bonds to plastic, you might need to sand the surface slightly for it to bond. Test on a sample and try to scratch it off.

Another tip, in my experience conventional always gives me better finishes than climb cut in this PVC material

I've gone up to 2500mm on the feedrate and up to 5mm without any issues. This is with a .25" endmill.
With a .125" endmill I've gone up to 2000 mm feedrate and 3mm doc

Is the material solid enough that I could cut a 3D model? Does it come thicker than 1/4"?
BTW, good use of the "hazardous waste" sign. ;-)

I'm making a sign using .50 PVC. I'm using .125 2 flute cheap end mill. It's rather big (10" letters) 24 in all. I was successful, but there are some rough edges. I was wondering what I could use to smooth them out. I was going to attempt to use "Platinum patch" that I purchased from Lowes, but now I realize that it says "not to be used as a skim coat". Might you have any suggestions?

Anybody knows if this material is closed cells or open cells?
Will it absorb water if you live it out in the rain?
Also, what is the consistency of this material? Is it hard like a wood, or can you make a dent in it with your fingers if you press hard? Thanks.

Expanded PVC is resistant to mold and mildew and has non-moisture absorbent and anti-shock qualities, making it the perfect material use for a trim or other wood replacement projects inside of living and professional spaces.

    • @muggzzzzz

It is not as hard as wood, you can make a dent in it by the tip of your fingernail.
You can also split it to pieces by cracking it along the half-depth cut made by the box cutter knife.
Nevertheless, it is great material for sign making, modeling and for many other purposes.

Winston or anyone who can help I have a shapeoko XXL that is a few days shy of a month old😳
I have been able to cut several designs out with it and it’s worked fine up until today 😢
TODAY it gets about a quarter way through any project I TRY TO cut and it stops and it tells me that ERROR 5 SERIAL PORT RESOURCE ERROR?
Can anyone help? I have disconnected the power and reconnected it hoping that it will solve the problem but it does not? And I have called and emailed carbide 3-D!

Did you ever get this resolved? I was having similar problems and tried a few of the recommendations found here: wiki.shapeoko.com/index.php/Electronics#USB_Disconnection. I grounded my router to the chassis and added a usb isolator. Seems to have done the trick so far. Weird how this problem suddenly showed up.

how is this compared wrt millability to a HDPE sheet? does this have higher melting point than HDPE?

    • @D3rron08
      @D3rron08 2 роки тому

its does not melt but burns since most have a fire retardant so it kinds just darkens n carbonizes, its not dent like hdpe its it like sponge but with microscopic pores that are closed celled

      We've used it before: ua-cam.com/video/wdRxkg99Zo0/v-deo.html
But for all practical purposes it can be treated very similar to acrylic.

@@WinstonMakes I made a vacuum table out of solid surface. You can find the project on nextwaveautomation's site under /cncprojectplans at the bottom. The best thing about this is you can find huge amounts of it in the dumpers of re-modelers. I have found enough sink cut outs to make a lot of cutting boards that match my counter tops too. Certainly its all I use for jigs now. The cuttings stick to everything because its statically charged so a leaf blower comes in handy when cutting. The other thing is you can bend it if heated. I have made some signs to go around poles etc. Andy Graves has a good channel on working with it. And of course it can polish to perfection.

By the way there are two types, one that has UV protection and a kind that doesn't.

The main way to screw this stuff up is to go too slow and let heat build up. It has a very low melting point.
