Bobby was a friend on mine from 1963 until he past in 2003. Great guy and singer. He and Bill Medley sang together for many years. On their albums they sang together but also always had solo cuts they did on their own. This live version is from 10-25-1965 when Bill and Bobby were on "The Andy Williams Show." I've seen the Righteous Brothers over 50+ times in person and this was always on the list of songs that Bobby would do solo at every concert. It is without a doubt one of the most beautiful love songs ever written. My short version of how this song came to be. In 1954, in Los Angeles, CA a small film company called Republic Pictures needed a title song for a movie, "Unchained." Alex North (Los Angeles based) wrote the music and then sent it back to his lyricist friend Hy Zaret on the East Coast. Mr. Zaret pulled out some old poems he had written in the late1930's and early 1940's that he use to try and impress girls that he liked. He messed around with the song adding and deleting his own lyrics to fit the beautiful score written by composer Alex North. The movie was released in 1955, and "Unchained" was first sung by Gospel singer Todd Duncan in the movie. Many artists recorded it, but in 1965 Bobby Hatfield made this song so famous, that today March 1, 2021 - if it were released again it would be a monster hit - because it's that great!!!!!!!!!!!! I had the pleasure of spending an hour with Alex North in Hollywood in 1983 and he share the entire story with me. Growing up during the Vietnam War era, this song always had a profound meaning to me as I imagined how it touched the soldiers who were longing for their lovers back home. Especially when he sings: "Wait for me, wait for me" I'll be coming home, wait for me.

Charles Carles 10 months ago I am 81 and have heard several artist before Bobby’s version and several after. No one comes close to this, Bobby owns it. This version came out as I was headed for Viet Nam. You can feel the loneliness in the words and the way we felt as we were away from our families for one long year. Bill and Bobby always did one solo on each of there albums and while on tour. They both wanted to do “Unchained”, so they flipped a coin. The music was written as the theme for the little-known prison film “Unchained” (January 1955), hence the song title. Todd Duncan sang the vocals for the film soundtrack. It has since become a standard and one of the most recorded songs of the 20th century, most notably by the Righteous Brothers. The movie “Unchained” is about a man in prison and longing for his wife and children. Hoping his wife will still be there when he gets out. So you can now understand the meaning of the song. The movie was not very good, or so my friends told me. But we were all teenagers so what did we now. Several artists sang it and it made the billboard top 100. But no one can come close to Bobby Hatfield’s version. Bobby’s version hit the top ten chart. And did it again when it was used in the movie “Ghost” It has since become a standard and one of the most recorded songs of the 20th century, most notably by Bobby. According to the song's publishing administrator, over 1,500 recordings of "Unchained Melody" have been made by more than 670 artists, in multiple languages.
Many female singers can hit that note too but Bobby goes up to A5 in his live performance of this song on Shindig. His highest i heard is Eb6 (whistle register) on his 1971 Messin in Muscle Shoals solo album.

Something to keep in mind: this was recorded in 1965. The Vietnam War was just heating up, and young American men were being sent, not just to Vietnam, but to American bases all over the world. They were separated from wives, from girlfriends, and the line asking "Are you still mine?" resonated a lot with them.
Bobby was 25 yrs old in this video. He is now in the rock and role hall of fame. Unchained melody is the most beautiful love song ever written. Bobby was found dead in his hotel room in 2003. He kept his beautiful voice til the very end.

They are not brothers,Bobby Hatfield and Bill Medley is their names.They took the Name Righteous Brothers after a show in the early 60's after playing on a Marine Corp NCO club that was full of Black Marines and they yelled out that that was Righteous Brother and that is how they got their name and I was in that NCO Club 6 years later when I was in the Marines.

As a marine, you should understand brotherhood, the people in your team are not related, but you depend on them to make the best team available to survive(same goes with bands/performers). I worked security for 30 years(worked with hundreds of international bands/celebrities), and I called my boss and some others in the company brothers, because we had each other's back and could depend on them, no matter what. My father fought in WW2, one brother fought in Vietnam. Both told stories that made me cry. And you want to nitpick and throw shade at me, because of the technicality of last names. Thank you so much Courtney for your reaction to this beautiful song done by Bobby Hatfield. I grew up in this time and actually went to the same college as they did in Santa Ana, CA. Bobby's range and vocal ability are second to none. This song was very carefully crafted. There were many very romantic songs back in the day. The Righteous Brothers rendition of Unchained Melody has a special place in music history. It has been chosen as the #1 song in the twentieth century above all others. Over time, there were several renditions of this song by other artists before Bobby to it to a new level. Your reaction to this music was very natural and you are lucky to be so sensitive. There are very, very few songs that can make the listener reach a new level of emotional feeling and many people actually get goosebumps listening to it. Many cry from joy. While more modern songs out there today have merit, I am hoping that you will listen to this special song many more times in your life. Doing that will give you peace and joy. Growing up during the Vietnam War era, this song always had a profound meaning to me as I imagined how it touched the soldiers who were longing for their lovers back home. Especially when he sings: "Wait for me, wait for me" I'll be coming home, wait for me.
He was nervous because his mom and dad were in the audience and he did not want to mess up.

Courtney, you're expressions and obvious emotions are the same as millions of women. If you were a stick of butter you would've literally melted before our very eyes. 55 years later nothing has changed. My wife tells me that both of the Rightous Brothers were very kind, classy gentlemen. She knew them even before they shot to the heavens with stardom. Neither of them ever changed with success going to their heads.

But a callous jackass like you wouldn't get that. It's more fun to come on and make useless, pointless, callous and inaccurate remarks. I am 81 and have heard several artist before Bobby’s version and several after. No one comes close to this, Bobby owns it. This version came out as I was headed for Viet Nam. You can feel the loneliness in the words and the way we felt as we were away from our families for one long year. Bill and Bobby always did one solo on each of there albums and while on tour. They both wanted to do “Unchained”, so they flipped a coin. The music was written as the theme for the little-known prison film “Unchained” (January 1955), hence the song title. Todd Duncan sang the vocals for the film soundtrack. It has since become a standard and one of the most recorded songs of the 20th century, most notably by the Righteous Brothers. The movie “Unchained” is about a man in prison and longing for his wife and children. Hoping his wife will still be there when he gets out. So you can now understand the meaning of the song. The movie was not very good, or so my friends told me. But we were all teenagers so what did we now. Several artists sang it and it made the billboard top 100. But no one can come close to Bobby Hatfield’s version. Bobby’s version hit the top ten chart. And did it again when it was used in the movie “Ghost” It has since become a standard and one of the most recorded songs of the 20th century, most notably by Bobby. According to the song's publishing administrator, over 1,500 recordings of "Unchained Melody" have been made by more than 670 artists, in multiple languages.
I have read a few times that this performance was voted the best solo performance ever sung. I have to agree.
I would say it's the best PERFORMANCE ever. And it's really not even close.

Our generation SOOOOO had the best music ever. 60's 70's 80's was a great time to be young. I can remember making out in the car to this tune.

Really, though, does any grown man have the right to be so adorable? He and Bill were the prime example of opposites attract, so totally different one another in every way. I never knew why Bill always got the lion's share of their duets though when Bobby was really the one we wanted to hear? Sorry Bill, but it's how I feel. :)
Something to keep in mind: this was recorded in 1965. The Vietnam War was just heating up, and young American men were being sent, not just to Vietnam, but to American bases all over the world. They were separated from wives, from girlfriends, and the line asking "Are you still mine?" resonated a lot with them.

Bobby was 25 yrs old in this video. He is now in the rock and role hall of fame. Unchained melody is the most beautiful love song ever written. Bobby was found dead in his hotel room in 2003. He kept his beautiful voice til the very end.

Courtney: I graduated high school in 1958 which makes me closing in on my 83rd birthday! The righteous Brothers were not actually brothers but, made many beautiful songs together. The other "brother" actually turned down participating in that ground breaking tune WOW!!!. search out some of their work together the other "brother" is taller

They are not brothers,Bobby Hatfield and Bill Medley is their names.They took the Name Righteous Brothers after a show in the early 60's after playing on a Marine Corp NCO club that was full of Black Marines and they yelled out that that was Righteous Brother and that is how they got their name and I was in that NCO Club 6 years later when I was in the Marines.

As a marine, you should understand brotherhood, the people in your team are not related, but you depend on them to make the best team available to survive(same goes with bands/performers). I worked security for 30 years(worked with hundreds of international bands/celebrities), and I called my boss and some others in the company brothers, because we had each other's back and could depend on them, no matter what. My father fought in WW2, one brother fought in Vietnam. Both told stories that made me cry. And you want to nitpick and throw shade at me, because of the technicality of last names. If you were not a veteran, I would tell you to take a running jump of the end of a pier.

This was a live performance, no studio magic, just pure talent.
This song was written for a prison movie- listen again, knowing it's a prisoner singing to his girl on the outside for an emotional experience. Also, that last smile... his mother was in the audience, and he was nervous, and that smile was knowing he hit the note for her.

Angelic, pure and beautiful voice. One of those songs and versions that will last for centuries. And yes he was a very handsome man. I once had a bit of a crush on him, way back when I was teenager, 56 years ago. This song still makes me tear up all these decades later. And yes, I did have it as the bride and groom first dance at my wedding in 1969.

Bobby had a head cold during this performance, too. Over 1500 covers of this 1955 song and this is the best hands down! The song was written for film about a man who was incarcerated pining for his wife. It didn’t do well until it was decided to turn it into a love song for everyone.
