- Sailing Indonesia The good the bad and the ugly - Ep 186
About to continue sailing to the west of Indonesia in our floating home, we are ticking off the items on our to do list. To keep our sailing teenagers happy we have rented scooters. This opens up a world for them beyond the sailboat anchorage, giving them the freedom to roam where and when they please, just don't trust that google maps will send you the shortest, easiest or correct route to travel by.
However, the kindness of strangers has put us back on track, returned a lost phone and trusted us to return with the correct money for an outstanding bill. Shame about the scam at the service station then.

BACK STORY
In 1997, after rowing at the Atlanta Olympics, Rob rowed a tiny 7m (22 foot) plywood boat 2,500 miles from Tenerife (Canary Islands) to Barbados (Caribbean). It took six weeks for Rob and rowing partner, Phil Stubbs, to complete winning the inaugural Atlantic Rowing Race.
Skip forward to 2014 and, married with three children, Rob and his wife Rachel purchased Javelot, a 43 ft Fountaine Pajot catamaran. Armed only with Rob's 3 years of racing P class yachts from the age of 11 to 13, and Rachel's non existent sailing knowledge, We set off to learn the ropes of ocean sailing. We broke stuff, replaced stuff and got to know their boat before heading offshore with the kids, Finn (then 13), Declan (then 11) and Ivan (then 8), in tow. Through trial and error we have become confident wayfarers, kind of.
The plan? To sail around the world.
Part of the journey will be retracing Rob’s eldest brother Kerry’s travels at sea. Using Kerry’s original letters from the 1970’s we hope to retrace his movements from Australia through Indonesia and South East Asia to Cambodia where Kerry’s life was cut short after straying into Cambodian waters in 1978. Kerry and two friends were attacked by a Khmer Rouge gun boat, captured, tortured and executed. www.brothernumberone.co.nz

Cheers to 2023 and the Cruising Kiwi's!
Big cheers to you too AD. Hope you have a beaut 23.
There are a lot of wonderful, honest people in this world. They rarely get a mention. Indonesians are some of the most beautiful and happy people I’ve ever met.
It's so true. The more 'advanced' the society the less welcoming it seems to become. Everywhere we went every day all day long it was with openness and warmth.
Another awesome video, yea for Sir Ivan the rescue kayak, Lol.
What would we do without him?
What a groovy family. Always a joy to follow in you adventures on land or on the sea. Buying gas in Indonesia with the dollar exchanged had me lost. One hundred, billion dollars for a gallon of gas. Exchange into US, $5. LOL! Love you history lesson. Give me more world history please.
Thanks heaps MA. And to add to the pain one is for not receive all of what one pays for. Double whammy.
Love the hat and shirt Rob.
They are the best! Had an expert design and make them for us!
Fun fact. Or not so fun. The Kiwi’s are grossly under subscribed. Love you guys
We love our fun facts Colin, thank you.
Happy new year all of you too. May 2023 be a blessed adventure for you all!
Thank you Derek. And to you yours too.
I just want to say Happy New Year, Rob, Rachael, Finn, Declan, Ivan and Shanelle!
Thanks for sharing your adventures. Congrats on your 16K subscribers. Keep it up because your channel is definitely in my top 3 sailing channels because you’re giving content that is relatable, true, no nonsense or scripts. Only true experiences while living on a small damp caravan on the water(not my words ;-) )
Thanks for sharing precious moments in sailing, exploring, family life with laughter and tears on the water and giving us some history stories which are mostly unknown by the rest of us.
Cheers to you all!
Thank you very much for the lovely comment. Keep Flying V. Some might say you're up in the clouds but we reckon you're very grounded hehe. 🙂
Happy New Year to all.
Happy new year to you too Gustavo.
That snorkel looked nice!!
Yeah it was a really nice drift snorkle complete with post swim paddle.
Shanelle could not have been comfortable on that scooter. Nice video, keep up the awesome work. Happy New Year.
She was doing fine with boy so close 🙂
I'm impressed that you guys already expert on riding motorcycle, can't wait for more adventure, stay safe.
Thank you for the observation HOT. We cut our teeth in Kupang learning the way the locals manoeuvre in the traffic. It's exciting yet seems oddly safe.
Goodness me Ivan cracks me up, so so funny.
He's fun to be with to be sure.
Thanks team great watch
Hey thanks Pannie. Happy new year.
It really is surprising how many people are honest.
Most, nearly all, are.
Good to start my catch up watching the Amazing Cruising Kiwis
Oh boy you've got some challenges ahead of you there!🙂😉
Happy New Year guys, great video as per usual. Really looking forward to seeing where this year takes you.
Thanks Stewart we have a plan but it might turn out very different as is often the case.
Happy new year kiwis! There is so much more good in the world than bad. 16k! My prediction of 100k subscribers in 2023 is well on its way! Take care Kiwis! Carl
We would love it if you're right Carl.
6:38, it wouldn’t be the cruising kiwis, without Rob hurting himself! What’s you personal best Rob? 3-4 injuries per episode?
I can see now why at the start, Rachel made you wear the helmet 😂
Just think how much worse the injury might have been Trev if I hadn't worn the helmet!
Fantastic video as always. Thank you
Thanks Mark it was fun.
Congratulations on 16k subscribers.... it's only the beginning for you guys. Love this video... Rachel you are nailing the editing !! 🤠👍
Kerry
Thank you Kerry. Slowly slowly catchie monkey.
I agree! It’s riveting watching. Great story telling. My boys want to watch cruising kiwis every day!
@@kevinbiggar well those Biggar Boys are clearly discerning young fellas. Happy new year to you All.
And back at you as well. HNY 2023. Loving your channel. I think you were screwed at the fuel stop.
A simple matter of altering th calibration, and they've got you by the proverbial. Until next time atb.
Yeah they saw us coming Bryan.
Happy New Year you guys. You ride mopeds just like Asians. Three per bike and in bare feet. So reassuring to see so much honesty still in the world. We're having another bout of bad weather here in Tauranga. The boat is bopping about the berth a bit, so there must be a bit of swell running up the harbour. Still waiting for the sparky!!
Have safe travels on all your various journeys over the next weeks.
Honest indeed they are indeed Owen, on the ground at least. Could be wrong but as far as the eye could see Rob was the only rider with bare feet.
May the weather calm and the sparkys get cracking.
Happy new years.
Thanks for all the hard work you all put in to producing a fantastic and entertaining vblog.
Safe travels Cheers from the Tron team 👍 👏 🙌 👌 😎
Thanks Rob!@
5:13 that’s what i like about the channel, you are entertaining yet still learn! 😂. I’m a coconut expert now!
We forgot to add it was thirst quenching.
I so love following your adventures. My five-year-old granddaughter spent the night recently and requested The Cruising Kiwis as her evening's entertainment (she might have a little thing for Ivan!). Happy New Year!!
How lovely Pam. She must be a very discerning young lady, of course. 🙂
We've just had a horrendous delayed flight then airport wait to get a bus resulting in two uncomfortable hours sleep over night and this brought a smile to Ivan's face when I read it to him. 🙂
@@TheCruisingKiwis That brought a smile to my face! Thank you for sharing (and sorry about the horrendous flight delay!)
Happy New Year. “There is nothing more enticing, disenchanting, and enslaving than the life at sea.” ...
What a quote! It says it all!!
Fingerprints and photos are standard when renewing your visas in Indonesia. Not on entering, maybe too much paperwork, so just do it for renewals.
Yes that seems to be so for whatever reason.
I found out this vlog is lovely.. I've just subs. Take a good care
Thank you very much Fatimah. How for you find us? I hope you enjoy future episodes and, if you choose, past ones.
Happy new year Kiwi's be safe! 👍👍
Thanks very much TW.
@@TheCruisingKiwis 👍👍
Great vlog as usual. I wonder if the locals know about the fuel scam. Google does the same thing in Brisbane so no surprise there. One time I was driving a Semi and it sent me down a one lane road to a Park and Walkway. Great fun turning that around. Happy New Year to all.
Yes I think the locals are aware, one bloke said he sometimes has the same problem when filling his motor bike. But I think foreigners cop it worse. One time they lifted the bowzer then quickly replaced it and we then waited 10 minutes before the pump would work again. The thinking is it was getting a reset.
I bet most Indonesian including myself not aware of this since we believe the machine lol
Keep up the good job. Maybe it's not the proper place to do this but while watching your videos, you guys mentioned your oldest son and his vision issues. If you did not mention it, I would have never known. It's a great inspiration and was in awe of his resolve. He seems to be doing fine. Are there things he can't do? Or just life as normal? Thanks for all you do!
Thank you Ed. Yes Finn has colloboma in both eyes. His sight is compromised but we've never treated him like he has any issue and he doesn't allow it to show him down.
Kia Ora. I'll be in Bali with my family in May and looking forward to some heat. Shame I missed you by some months.
You needed to skip forward 6 months or so with your holiday plans Sausage. Would have been good to meet you.
Thank you so much for sharing this experience ✨🙏✨Happy New Year to each of your family ✨🤞Ivan is feeling better 🤞🏍️💸📇🚣🏻🐠🪖
Thank you Charmaine.
Happy New Year Kiwis. Cheers.
Thank you Victor.
i really enjoy that you focus on local cultures. Swindling you out of petrol in unacceptable no matter where you are. That shows how desperate they are to bring in a little extra cash.
Yeah it's a shame but we came to grudgingly accept and laugh about it in the end.
Cheers guys! And happy new year’s 6 days ago! Close enough.. was pleasantly surprised how healthy that reef looked..
Haha happy new year to you too Trev. Hoping the best for the group.
You have to start from the very beginning!! Very nice into Ivan, safe travels. ❤❤💙💙💙💜
Everything starts at the beginning otherwise you'll be at the end before ya know it.
Happy New Years Hamill’s
Thank you Kev and right back at ya!🙂
Happy New Year!
Happy new year to you too Anne.
Happy New Year guys xxx
Thank you Carol.
Congratulations on the 16K subscribers. I feel so happy for you and it is well deserved. An outstanding video full of interest and entertainment. Love the under water filming. I really enjoyed this one as I do every weeks video.
Ivan is a natural in front of a camera. He really cheers me up and I hope he is feeling better. You are all pretty good on the Moped's to. All the best for the New Year. Keep well and safe. James.
Thanks James. Ivan made the start to this week's episode.
Happy new year guys
Thanks Mathew and right back at ya!
Happy New Year all! I love the title of this episode. I would agree that the people are honest and kind for the most part, and the natural beauty is everywhere. After doing a bit of flying in and throughout what I guess are now called 'Developing Nations', I did always feel like I was buying drugs in a back alley every time I fueled up...
When were you travelling in the region. It sounds like it was even more remote then. And more pristine too?
Mid 90's - early 20's. For me it was the southern Caribbean and South America, via piston and jet aircraft. I never made it to Indonesia, but I found those parts of the world to share some common threads. I miss those days actually. Thanks for sharing!
@@wherecondorssoar7175 that must have been a time of great adventure, exhaustion and learning.
Happy New Year Cruising Kiwis!!! You are definitely taking the road less travelled on your Indonesian adventures.
Thanks Evan. Always some sort of *mis adventure going on.
Happy New Year , may it bring you Joy , Peace and Blessings
Thank you Marion. And to you and yours too.
How do Kiwis!
I have been too busy for electronics for several months, but winter has slowed down all……I am planning to binge watch you you guys. (In a very wholesome, non-creepy way; )
Before I do though, thank you in advance for providing us these videos!
Very awesome.
Hey Joe! Nice to hear from you and good luck with the catch up.
@@TheCruisingKiwis You people are my happy place online!
I just saw Indonesia had an earthquake a few minutes ago! We are praying for your safety 🙏
@@leidersammlung6955 thank you we are along way NW of that area. I hope everyone nearby at ok.

I have a small request: whenever you present a map or a graphic in your videos, please hold it on-screen for 5 full seconds - I often have to pause and back up the video to see them.
Noted thanks RR.
Happy New Year to the sweetest Cruising 🦤 Kiwis. I think you need a second channel. And it needs to be everything comedic. And you can also sing. Y'all are too dang funny. Hugs from Texas sweeties 😎
Thank you Bobbie. The boys reckon 'TCKs minus Rob' channel would be funny. Humph.

Paula, Paula, Paula did you fall asleep before the end of the vlog? All your questions would have been answered if you ad just stayed vigilant :)
Great to hear the band is up and running again. Are regular Wednesday nights a goer from now on do you think?
