Winter Cold Water Immersion 5.7°C 🧊 Natural Hydrotherapy at Sunrise on a Frosty Morning
Вставка
- Опубліковано 29 вер 2024
- This was my most beautiful cold-water immersion yet 😍 The water was 5.7°C, which is pretty cold! Although not the coldest that I’ve been in, this was the first time that I’ve submerged into water when the air temperature was freezing
Thanks to the preparation & aftercare this was a wonderful, restorative experience and I feel blessed to have witnessed such a gorgeous sunrise too... in England it’s a rare thing indeed for the water to be so still and to see mist rising from the lake. I could have stared at it for days!
Thank you so much for watching 😊 Much love, Claire 🌿🐻

💧 COLD WATER SAFETY 💧 Cold water is wonderful, but can be dangerous, or even fatal. These are a few guidelines, but always do your own research too;
- Never jump in - ease yourself in slowly, to avoid shocking your body. If you shock your body, you will gasp and hyperventilate which can cause you to inhale water (drown)
- Control your breathing from the start
- Stay within your depth and avoid fast moving water and strong currents
- Wear water shoes to protect your feet
- Check that the floor is solid
- Before getting in, make sure you can easily get out
- Go in warm
- Stay close to the edge while you check that your body can handle the drop in temperature and that you can maintain normal use of your limbs
- Don't stay in too long and always come out before you start shivering
- Have a towel, lots of warm clothes and a warm drink ready for when you get out
- Bear in mind that your body temperature can continue to drop for quite a while after you get out - this is called 'after drop' and is the result of the cooled blood in your extremities returning to your core. Allow for this.
- Don't drive until your temperature has returned to normal
- Start in summer and gradually work your way up to colder water
- Practice tolerance with cold showers
- Don't do a cold water immersion if you have heart or other health conditions that may make it especially dangerous
- Trust your instincts. If it doesn't feel right, don't do it
- It's a good idea to have a spotter in case of emergency

Kudos for being one of the very few female content creators in this space who wouldn’t use this as an opportunity for a flesh filled thumbnail. You are, by far, one of the most consistently authentic, down to earth and inspiring creators and with a ton of class to boot. I always look forward to your next video and I learn something new every time. I love the outdoors and anyone that can encourage others to share in that joy of being present and enjoying simple pleasures, like a well made fire, a starry night sky, the sound of weather on a tent, or a hot tasty meal after a day outside. Bliss.
Amazing.
You're the reason UA-cam was created.
You educate, entertain, elevate, encourage, and do a whole bunch of other words that begin with "e".
After watching your videos I free compelled to go outside and experience nature.
Thank you.
I watch every video, just take care of yourself, be happy, stay settled
You really do have it all going on, Claire. A touch mental, but with lots of smarts too. Stunning camera work as well. Nothing not to like here. Lovely and inspiring
Nice to see what the dawn sees. The best time to be awake. The water looked pleasantly cool but not freezing ♥
Wow! Both incredibly serene and exhilarating at the same time!
While on my houseboat in Lake Powell (Utah), in the middle of November, I dove in--multiple times--into 52* F (11.1* C) waters. It was just plain exhilarating! 😆The serenity came afterward, while being warmed by the sun and being enveloped in a large, thick towel. Good times!
Thank you for this beautiful video, Claire! I loved it.💕
Hi Russell! Ahh wow you have a houseboat, that's amazing! Yeh 11degC is still pretty cold isn't it! Large thick towel is always a must 🥰 thank you so much for watching and have a lovely eve 🌿 Claire
I would pick wild swimming in Utah over wild swimming in the UK any day of the year. Americans are so blessed for nature and landscapes.
What an awesome video the sun through the trees, the ripples on the water , the mist, the light , the shillouette , the music ………the cinematography is stunning …..this is an artistic masterpiece.
Aw yay thank you so much! It was so very beautiful, I felt very blessed to be a part of that morning :)
Love that you included the tips and the safety advice also. That water must have been crazy cold! I wouldn't have thought to increase your core temperature beforehand, so jogging on the spot was a good tip!
So at one with nature, amazing!
🥰 thank you for watching :)
Quite possibly the most beautiful video I've seen this year so far, Claire (round of applause!)
Cold weather is my happy place as is the Golden Hour and you've brought both to us perfectly........nicely done and respect for the dunking 👍😆
Hi Keith, ah wow really, that's so nice of you to say :D Mmm I love the cold too, shame no snow or anything here so far this winter.. still hoping I'll find some before the spring! Haha thank you, the dunk is always the testing bit 😄 hope you have a lovely day :) 🌿 Claire
Such a lovely reply (not just a like lol).....thank you! 😊
One day of snow so far 'up north' and I was lucky enough to be out in it (horizontal snow.....it was a wee bit breezy!)
Sadly, I only seem to have reservoirs around me, so no dunking. Guess I need to venture further afield.
This is a brilliant video Claire, that was really cool! Thanks for the explanation, that was fascinating and something that I have always wanted to try!
Thanks so much Richard, glad you liked it! Deffo give it a try, it's thoroughly enjoyable with the right prep / aftercare and in my experience gives a nice boost for a good few days after :) have a lovely eve 🌿Claire
Phewww brave girl…
Never tried it myself. Have yet to find it enjoyable🤣
Wonderful.
Great video so inspirational, I bet you was glowing afterwards and feeling so fresh.
Thank you David, ahh yeh, gives such a lovely boost that seems to last for days! :)
That's crazy cold!
Wow beautiful
Legend!
Well done Claire, fantastic video, good content and plenty good advice.scenery was amazing.best wishes.
Thanks so much Ian, it was such a beautiful morning 🥰 Have a great weekend :) 🌿Claire
Wow that was well cool lol if I ever tried anything like that I prob would get dun by some park bloke for having a fire to get warm again 😂😂fantastic stuff and wow that view tho
Check out the wim hof breathing method if you haven't already but coupled with cold emersion is mind blowing and as always your videos are awesome ✌️
Nice, simple and informative 👌, where did you get the quilted trousers from. Thanks.
Very Nice content!
🥺you are super.if is me I have to use one of this.🤒😊just to make sure the water is 75to 90dgr.😂
That is truly beautiful Claire.... both the setting with the dawn sunrise over the lake and the act and the benefits you have described. Excellent. You know your stuff!
Thank you Paul, everything came together nice for this one :D
Great vid, even more so the filming 👌
Very very well made video.
Providing some very solide information next to inspiering visuals and your lovley calming voice.
I think I have try cool water myself soon.
The first two minutes of this video is sublime...makes a person feel "one" with our water planet.
It also makes me feel closer to the Most High God who created it.
Creator? You must mean protons, neutrons, electrons, and other Baryonic matter. Very anthropogenic...
Nope. Not doing it. No way. Ever.
This is why I subbed to this channel, you mixing it up. Thanks for the vid, I turned the heat on for ya! : - )
We love wild swimming, and this was a near perfect video for me. Thanks so much.
Did a camp next to Llyn Bochlwyd last weekend, and dipped first thing in the morning, it was so calm and serene.
All of the safety points you mentioned were spot on - most issues people have are caused by fast immersion, (jumping in for example, or tripping on silt/rocks), the shock and that has on the body, and the body's reaction to said shock.
One thing I would mention is the afterdrop phenomenon. As you mentioned in cold water your body shuts off circulation to your skin and extremities, (hence why you go pale when cold), and it's important to manage how long you're in that state. However there's a second consideration here after you get out of the water. Once your body senses that the skin temperature is rising again it will re-enable circulation. Everybody sees this as the warm blood going back to the extremities, but you also need to be aware that the cold blood is now also circulating into your core. A lot of people find that their temperature drops and coordination falters about 3-5 minutes after they get out. Obvious tips to manage this are get dried as soon as possible, have a warm drink available as soon as you're dried, and possibly a hot water bottle/warm Nalgene bottle to snuggle up to.
Hey Matt, ahh that sounds gorgeous a camp & dip at Llyn Bochlwyd 😍
Yes you're so right about the after drop, I've experienced this in the past and it's the oddest feeling, to keep getting colder when you're wrapped up in lots of clothes. It's definitely something that needs to be allowed for, as if you've already stayed in too long and let your temp drop too low and then have the after drop as well it can be dangerous. Thank you for sharing :)
Been a viewer for a long time, but I’ve never been moved to comment before because I have no desire to try to impress you. But on this one I’m driven to say - you just be careful!
I agree with u on a cold dip gets u feeling alive but I want to point out and I hope others take note about 10 years ago I dipped my feet in a lake in the summer I was to warm what I wasn't aware was that the lake had an infestation of rats that swam in the lake did there toiletries in the lake aswell a few days later I was feeling unwell thinking it was sunstroke but it wasn't I got rushed to hospital with liver and kidney failure they did tests and put me on a drip and antibiotics what came back from the results shocked me I had weils disease it was actually called leptospirosis which is caused by rat urine it came into my blood from a cut on my foot that I didn't see or think about at the time so it's alright dipping in a lake in winter or summer but honestly be careful u never know these things can happen if u use lake water boil it and filter it I hope this gets seen by many people that go into lakes or go fishing ect please be careful everyone stay safe
Beautiful images. Beautifully filmed. No screaming or swearing - I'm impressed.
How do you know….she could’ve edited them out? 😜
Hahaha!! I was in the zone for this.. had I not been there would have been plenty of screaming & swearing I'm sure 😄 thanks for watching :)
@@pennywise146 very true haha 😄
lovely video and beautifully filmed, very atmospheric
Thank you Barry :) 🌿
Your filmmaking gets better and better. Loved the birds and the time-lapse when you got out of the water. 👍🙂
Thank you so much Brian, it was such a beautiful morning :)
I used to live next door to a Chinese man who lived to 102. I asked him one day what the secret to a long life was and he told me to take a cold shower once a day.
Thanka for this, really helpful video. I still havnt managed to pluck up the courage to do this (and havnt found a place, or the time! ) But one day when my kids and job are a bit less demanding I hope to indulge.
Hope you get to give it a go :) it's really quite something, makes me feel nice and sleep deeply for days after. Thank you so much for watching and hope you have a lovely weekend :D 🌿Claire
Outstanding!!!
thank you for highlighting the safety issues and duration levels throughout this video
And especially don't jump into bodies of water on a hot day in the UK. That has and will be fatal. Very well explained Claire and stunning Sunrise photography. When are you hitting the hills next?
Hi Chris, yeh, sadly there have been people die in this very lake because they jumped in in summer, not realising how cold it would be.
Thank you I'm glad you liked it :) I'm just back from a Snowdonia trip actually, had a night with my tarp in a mountain forest, and then a night with my tarp up at Llyn Elsi.. in awful weather haha I was basically sleeping in a puddle! Good fun though. One day I'll get a nice sunrise or something on one of my trips 😄🤞
Have a lovely eve 🌿 Claire
@WildBeare look forward to your videos. Weather is awful. Thursday is the only day without rain in the midlands, so I might just bag a couple of hills. Nothing like what you do but from small acorns and that.
@@WildBeare Hope you are thawed out now. Summer will soon be here.
Real women don't wear modern clothing.
Absaloutly fantastic. Excellent energy. Well done.
Thank you 🥰🌿
@@WildBeare your very welcome. Your content is outstanding.
Awesome video! I'm very inspired! I've been thinking about doing something like this for a while now. If I film it I'll probably need to edit out the un-manly noises I'll be making on the way in
Well done, real achievement, so impressive.
She’s sure got the minerals!
Did you see it?
At 1:57.
A fish
I‘m just starting to travel, albeit in a van, and I really want to get into wild swimming and cold dips. Thank you for these tips. The warm-up beforehand could be the thing that helps me manage to do it.
Fantastically well put together vid by the way 👏 👌 🙌 💪 👍 😉
Houahhh !!! Même pas en rêve 😂 la seule température de l’eau acceptable est celle de ma douche 😅 min 37,5 !!!! Chapeau !!!!
The Ice Man Wim Hof has several videos on this. Well worth checking out.
Lovely narrative but spectacular videography. Your making me want to do this! Best regards. Mark
OMG, I do the cold exposure too. Have you ever done the Wim Hoff breath work? Its SOOO exhilarating!!! Thank you so mush for spreading the work and showing people how to stay healthy and take control of there own bodies. I do cold exposure, breath work and take a variety mushrooms that i dry and put into capsules. By doing what we're doing we have taken complete control over our autonomic nervous system.
Well well now I just learned something about the bear .
Gurl I bet your a AZZ kicker .
Try out for WWE .
And I respect your body .last part just Kidding.
Hypothermia can set in awfully quickly, disabling the body and confusing the mind. Wind can be especially dangerous, accelerating the cooling.
Had to ski into a frozen lake many yrs ago, Army training, Op Snow Queen. -20 C....not as peaceful as this though
I swam in a 4*c lake in Cosmoston South Wales once wow it was cold, but wow I felt good afterwards, asexual but good! 🤣🤣👍🏽♥️⛺️
Beautifully filmed. Your meditative response to cold water immersion makes me think of a beautiful Netflix documentary called "My Octopus Teacher". I wonder if you've seen it and if not, I think you'd find it quite a remarkable story.
Do dipping, Wim Hof Method for about five years now... everyday and very cold, no wind and clear skies in the morning are my favourite.
Anyway next week I hop over to the UK to do some extensive walking. Much rain just like the lowlands...
what a perfect mini expository documentary...beautifully filmed and narrated
Amazing bit of info. Claire you have such a calming voice ,have ya ever thought of doing sleep storytelling?
Great video ,take care .👍😇
I live in Florida now but I'm from upstate New York. We have a "Polar Bear Club," there where on New Years day we cut a hold in the ice and take a dip. It's awesome! Stay healthy my friend. 💚
I cold water sea swim everyday. Some great advice here from Clare. I would re-emphasise the benefits of a hot drink as soon as possible after exiting the water. I sip on hot tea as I’m dressing. If you swim in cold water 1-2 week you will improve your adaption and start enjoying longer swims with minimal shivering or after-drop.
This was beautiful, 🤔🤔, what is it about women's hormones? At that temperature I just think ☕☕🛀,
Take care Claire.
Nige ❤
Maybe it's because you're from a northern climate; maybe you have antifreeze in your blood. But speaking as a spoiled southerner (here in the US), I'm always impressed by how you can handle the cold.
Nope. Nope. Nope.
You are amazing, and I’m so happy I’ve found your channel. Such a powerful human being. You make me want to be better.
I am a 6 1", 18 stone ex rugby player covered in tattoos and like to think of myself as a mans man.
However, if I had to do what i have just watched you do, I would be crying for my mum!!
I tip my hat to you Clair, that was awesome
Love your channel
No way Dudette... NO WAY 🤣 😂 🥶🥶🥶🥶🥶🥶🥶
😱🥶🥶🥶🥶🥶 your more of a man than I am .... I just couldn't do that, 😂😂 thank you for your bravely
I would also think you would take the wet clothes off, that you just wore into the lake, before putting dry clothes on. So you can warm back up quicker. Or am I wrong in saying that???
Lovely video. I dunk in the sea twice a week this time of year. Not as cold as your lake at 8c but cold enough. Feel great after. What is that swimming away at about 1minute 56seconds?
Just stumbled on your channel while searching for camping tips and tricks. Most say this video is beautifully done and edited. That morning sun by the lake. Not sure I will ever do cold water immersion but this was very informative.
Claire set out the risks very well from doing cold water immersion but I would like to emphasise one. In very cold water, muscles quickly cease functioning. Claire was not swimming here, but sadly I know some people who tried to do this on a hot day swimming in very cold river with snow melt from the mountains in Wales and drowned very quickly as their muscles stopped functioning. This is not something to do without careful planning - which Claire did.
Wow thanks for sharing this video 🤩so want to try wild water swimming hopefully this year xx 😘
That was superb 😎 I showed The Management what you were doing as I was watching on my phone and she said, "F*** that!"
Clearly it's the mindset that makes it enjoyable and you seem to have that nailed 👍
Fab video WB.....honest and informative thank you 🙂
Great but I will stick to my cold showers. Love the water but as I have got older like my comfort more. Hate being cold but dont mind when its outdoors. Stay safe Derek
stunning cinematography ( as usual ) .. i think i'll skip the swim & go straight to the sit on the river-bank drinking Coffee bit
On the time in the water, for some reason I always thought it was 1 minute per degree above 0c, so around 6 minutes for 5.7c.
This is what is important in life … forget all the crap about careers … that’s all a lie… experience nature, notices what is around … amazing xx
A Nice little video there Claire, I like the reasoned aproach and also the highlighed dangers, but in a calm manner. It almost makes me want to go in... ok, no it doesn't. I've done it enough.😛
last week, i had an overnight kip out, on way home took some pics at the beaches along the way, at one, there were six ladies having a swim.... it was cold, and i thought, no..... no no no no no. i barely go in unless there's steam coming off the water !
Must admit I like a dry suit and layers of insulation, OK most of my swims were in Glacial melt in the Alps, 2 swims in 10 years not too bad for a kayaker
Perfect. You have a beautiful way of explaining and the tone of your voice to. You should put in for voice over work.
This was so beautiful and calming to watch! Really good advice in there too, especially about it not being a competition.
I love a cold water dip. There's nothing quite like it for getting your mind in tune with your body and the nature around you 😊.
Thanks Rach, yep it really does wonders doesn't it, especially in the dark months when you can feel a bit sluggish. Hope you're having a lovely week :)
Nice vid Claire, come to Canada and discover Canada. From the maritimes to British Columbia.
Excellent - WB what are those puffy trousers you have and where did you get them please
Your totaly nuts... in a good way. Love your Vids. Thanks for taking us all with you.
This video cam be summed up in one word - AMAZING.
Beautiful view and very well explained and demonstrated 👍👍
I have a friend who does cold water swimming for me i cannot bring myself to do it although i really do try to take any advice on being healthy ie gym weight control but always looking out for other natural ways of benefits Great video Atb Nigel.
This is really handy to know thankyou, as on my list of things to do this year, wild water swimming while camping, so the the advice is appreciated , cheers
Amazing Claire, looking so good, well done you. Stunning 👌😎
Great film, must try this. Very inspiring your films must make a real difference to people 👏

Your as nuts as my wife and she breaks ice to get in .she has been doing cold water immersion wild swimming for many years though .i on the other hand think the med is cold enough.your uploads a very interesting but I do hope you are looking after your safety or you have someone with you off camera.
Rally good advice Claire. cold water can so dangerous if you dont understand it and fully respect it. Great video ATB stay safe
You are very beautiful. Ups, did I say that loud? :-D
Have you ever shivered during a cold swim? Are there videos where you were shivering? You should do a video of the entire post swim to show the shivering/aftermath!
Stunning !
What a way to start the day ... I am off to Breacon tomorow to dip in the waterfalls .. Stay safe !
