This song shows me how life has an interesting way of showing you everything will be ok. My wife and I lost our daughter in July and every day since then it feels like I'm fighting the tides. This song captures what we have been feeling so brutally. This drives me to push the tides with every ounce of strength I have. Until we prevail. Mastodon you have helped me more than you can ever know.

Big call. We haven't had a classic since Crack the Skye and even that wasn't instant. Gojira's Fortitude was on the same trajectory according to some but I haven't heard it called a classic after the dust has settled. Give it time.

Agreed. I love metal, however, my brain's music dictionary ends at around 1992, so, my idea of heavy metal is a lot different than today's heavy metal, but I definitely appreciate how this song is a bit lighter on the ever-popular screamy, growling-type vocals, has a nice rhythm/structure to it, and sounds like the guys are actually playing a song, and not just strumming garbage as fast, and distorted as they can, like a lot of metal sounds these days. Well done, fellas. I might even finish listening to this song.🤘🤘🤘

Love the vocals on this! Troy's verses remind me of their older stuff, and then Brann's chorus comes in to cut through everything.

I really dont hope that I get slaughtered with this comment but here it goes, this album is perfect. I have been listening to metal since I was 13 in Alabama, perfect albums at o me are Master of Puppets, Hangar 18 , and this album Hushed and Grim. Absolute perfection.
This is very "Blood Mountain" meets "Emperor of Sand", and I'm here for it.

Sounds totally compressed to me, like it's computer drums. I feel like the dynamics of brann's drumming are only heard on Leviathan, where it actually sounds like a person playing drums.
I mean every snare hit sounds the same.
Dude whoever they had doing the sound on their albums after crack the skye and their live shows need to be shot into the fucking sun.
@Lee J no doubt, which really sucks, because you would imagine that Mastodon have a lot creative independence to do whatever they want, and I would imagine them having a preference for a more organic sound, like what you hear on Leviathan, with them being big neurosis fans and everything. And even then, drum triggers can also be done with some subtlety. I was surprised when I found out that the first rage against the machine album used some triggers, because it sounds very dynamic. But this is just tasteless.

Glad to see them back, hoping they make use of Brent on the album. I really like his voice, for a metal band it's quite a unique sound.
I like his voice too, but he does sound a bit like Ozzy and Zakk Wylde, so not fully agreeing with the unique for metal part.
