- Herring Fishing at CONEY ISLAND STEEPLECHASE PIER & BOARDWALK in Brooklyn NY. Coney Island is know for it's boardwalk, cotton candy, hot dogs, roller coasters, polar bears, aquarium, and cool people. Right off the boardwalk is Coney Islands own Steeplechase pier. Steeplechase pier provides fishing all year round. ALL species of fish in the NY bight can be caught at the Coney Island pier. Bluefish, striped bass, fluke, tog, weakfish, flounder, bonito, albacore, shark, skates, rays, sea bass, ling, porgy, robins, sturgeon, eels, mackerel, and drum are all possibilities and I am sure I missed your favorite fish so feel free to add!
Steeplechase pier is a second home in winter to the Atlantic herring. The herring fishing can be fast or slow. That is how fishing goes. However and always there's something to the kaleidoscopic atmosphere Coney Island provides. It is a fishing experience one can never take for granted. I guess something for everyone on Coney Island's boardwalk. Hot dogs, cotton candy and rides for some and "well be having some fun." For the fisherman you have the finest beach, pier and ocean jetties one can ever fish. Have fun out there and we are always happy to share our experiences with all those around the world and hope you enjoyed the video as much as we did making it and remember always - Fish Your Way!
Thanks for the posting. I am learning a lot from you how to fishing in ny. Thanks again.
So much welcome and thank you AJ very aspiring and Have a blessed New Year and wishes for many fishes!
Nice herring 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks 😊 Sir Albertus! Much appreciate watching commenting and subscribing!
I grew up there and the best rig for herring is a series of small gold hooks tied directly to your line in a row above a 2 ounce bank stinker an jig it up and down fast
I will try that thanks!
Wow that pier looks nice.
It is some great people to thanks anotherflores91 and have a Happy new year you and family!
How was the action there??
Theres been fish around someday better then others it can range from poor to great just about every abouts
Same pier used for Requiem for a dream?
Hmmm, dont know but if its coney island based I would be sure it was specially if you see the wheel
@@heyjerryfishing I think it is. The end of the the video looks almost the same. Quick google search confirms yes. Def will try to visit!
@@Winterwalker442 Very neat thanks for sharing!
What size sabiki hooks do you recommend
These are about a size US 4 or 6 but smaller will work well too about size US 8 for smaller herring, the international sizes vary it says 14 on the package and think the 12 would be a 8 international. I like the bigger hook though holds the fish on better the way up but smaller you may get more hookups
What is the best lura for herring
Most certainly the sabiki rig!!!
@@heyjerryfishing what's a good spot on the cross bay or Jamaica bay
Any pier bank or bridge can be well
I always buy bait from cross bay bait and tackle how far from there would you say
The bridge is right there, you can park on either side youll see people fishing it varies
Do you put any bait on the rig
Just the sabiki Charles!
Great video Jerry!
Thanks Tim! Talk soon!
I see a beautiful old Abu Garcia reel
Made the video! Thanks Ronnie! Have a blessed happy new year!

Broiled sounds good too! Enjoy!
Thanks Len!
Bait🤔
Oh yea, can never go wrong with bait
What kind of herring is everyone catching there?
Atlantic Herring. It is the only species moving in the area at this time of year, and the only legal herring to catch on the East coast.
@@ScrtAznMn Thanks for sharing!
Atlantic Herring thanks for watching and commenting Arthur and Have a blessed New Year and wishes for many fishes!
@@ScrtAznMn What are the daily limits on AH? I can't find it on the DEC site...
There are no limits for Atlantic herring I just keep what you plan to use
I've been fishing Canarsie pier, but it looks like it died out. You guys still getting them? And any word on magnolia?
I been in a few areas early on in the week and the bite from what I seen when I was out slowed up. Your best shot may be at night under lights
@@heyjerryfishing yea that's what I am going to try, Sat night at Magnolia.
Good fishing to you!
URBAN FISHING .? Was very interesting, loved the parachute jump all lit up. I still like to Fish Jones Beach more serene but you Fished your way. Have a Great New Year.
I would say at its finest! Really a cool place to fish gonna hope to work the water in the area show a bit more. Great ocean jetties to work usually a milder surf then the front too with some good steady wave action on the beach. Time it right you have the whole beach to yourself. Thanks as always Paul and have a blessed new year you and family!
Great video...Great spot to fish....Happy, Safe New Year...Cheers from Maine.
Thanks Maine Magic, love the name always wanted to go to Maine some reason I guess i have heard lots of lure as a kid, Have a blessed New Year and wishes for many fishes!
👍
Thanks Tray! Have a blessed New Year and wishes for many fishes!
@@heyjerryfishing same to you stay warm
Thanks Tray I will try!
Nice Jerry. Those old Mitchell reels are bulletproof and very popular at one time. Still see them at flea markets and garage sales. The rotor turns opposite from almost all modern reels, something to consider when you refill them.
It is a great reel, I think the first video I did on here was actually with that reel and used it decades before! They have go time! Al original parts to but should chabge the bail spring but its fine. I say that every year! Talking of year Have a blessed New Year and wishes for many fishes!
Thanks for the adventure! It reminded me of yellow perch fishing off a pier in Lake Michigan when I was a kid 😀 I still have my Mitchell but the clicking makes me nutty. Happy New Year! Stay safe.
Thanks for sharing that rbiel! I hear about the clicker alot!!! Know what ya mean but love it! Always appreciate watching and commenting and Have a blessed New Year and wishes for many fishes!
this year has been slow, the north shore was hot earlier this month do you think they haven't been in full force yet?
It has been, a few days been wild early on before that snowstorm then it tapped down. There reely no telling but they are spread out saw and had them in about every location. Canar seemed to have the thick and emmons may have a few more but did not check back there. Thanks as always CP and Have a blessed New Year and wishes for many fishes!
@@heyjerryfishing thanks!! happy new year as well
@@CP-rp7yp Much welcome!
man i wanted to go there to do a video but thats a lot of people
Yea a few folks out oddly I had the whole side to myself and a great panoramic view! Thanks Reids Outdoors and have a safe happy new year!
I went past field 10 yesterday and there were quite a few people fishing. When I went back about 7pm for high tide, the place was deserted. My question, is herring fishing primarily a daytime thing?
They bite at night if you have a bright light (overhead street lamp, work light, submersible fishing light, etc). They are sight feeders and need to see the flash of a fish or shiny tin to bring in for bite. The sabiki rigs are just plastic and foil with no scent or taste to entice the fish. People fish the low tide because the fish are concentrated in a specific area... ie. Narrow deep channels.
Much below and they will bite at night under lights often. They may have left because they did not have the night permit. I have found the glow beads on the sabiki's do help I show them in the video. Thanks as always Tim and Have a blessed New Year and wishes for many fishes!
@@ScrtAznMn Good stuff thanks for sharing!
Have yourself a peaceful and Happy New Year Jerry, lets make 2021 a better year. Peace.
Thanks Juan as always will do and have a blessed happy new year
The wife and I just went to Canarsie pier and they were catching herring like crazy between 3pm and 5 PM. At about 5:30pm with the outgoing tide it seem like they disappeared.Cooking up a mean herring dinner tonight boys!!
Sounds wild and a happy new year and a grand dinner! Sounds like a fun outing. Fished about the same time and lots of empty buckets with a very slow bite with a good-fair volume of anglers today about 3:30-5 same area. Must have only seen 6 or 8 herring mixed about 40-50 anglers around the pier. Again have a super new year and thanks for watching and commenting!
@@heyjerryfishing When I got there I saw lotta guys to the right of the pier. I went to the left corner and we pulled in about 30. Don’t know much about herring fishing but it’s strange how they migrate. One guy will be catching a bundle and the guy next to him will get anything.
I should clarify. Between three of us we pulled in about 30 herring in about 3 hours.
Thats pretty good! There are fish about and you got it right the can be weird at times. Sounds like you had them tight in the rip over there. They should be about up and down for the next weeks coming. Thanks again for sharing and enjoy dinner J GL!
They did a real nice job on that pier. I used to live 4 subway stops away Coney has really changed for the better
Its quite nice modern yet rustic. Love the whole area quite interesting neighborhood. So much to see with a stroll down the boardwalk. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Great video but i wish i could have heard your voice instead of background music.
Thanks Mike appreciate the constructive criticism will keep in mind for the next video! Have a blessed New Year and wishes for many fishes!
@@heyjerryfishing you also, i live in nearby CT so i watch a lot of your videos and try to use the info to fill the cooler!

Hi jerry - never fished Coney Island - More jones beach or Point lookout. - Love the Mitchell - If i have 1 I have 5 - One still in the Original Box From the 40's i think - Cant Kill them - Hope you have a Happy Newyear - God Bless and keep the Videos comming. - PS Getting close to Down time - Time to make teasers and offer them for sale, Would have made a good Christmas Gift for some! -
Wow, I was just reading the comments and thought of you Bill and here you are wild! Maybe our hours collide. i love that mitchell! It actually is in the first video I ever did on here! they just were made RIGHT. The gearing seems over thought BUT in the end the 3 gears takes all the stress out of a 2 gear system whick makes them last forever. Everything else id just SOLID. The bail spring may go thats about it with these. Will have to keep the teasers in mind! Thanks as always Bill and Have a blessed New Year and wishes for many fishes!
Great video 👍 what is the actual species of herring that is legal in NY ? The regulation website doesn’t list Atlantic herring, what type of herring did you catch in this video? Thanks!
The ones we get are the Atlantic Herrings as far as I know there are no regulations for them, thanks for watching and good question
Pier is beautiful early 70s I fished the old wooden pier thanks Jerry (How is the car parking?)
It is quite nice very spacious solid! Thanks Senol, Parking is alright this time year you can go to the lot when they are not playing baseball
Jerry, that reel looks like it's an old school reel? from the 1970's maybe it qualifies as an antique? how old is that reel?
Oh yea I would call that a functional antique kinda like me lol, it is from the late 70's
I was fishing just to the right of where you were and lost two lures and a Sabiki rig two successive days in a row. Right in that spot. Coney Island fishing pier is a really lousy place to fish. There are no fish there. It’s either shorts or dogfish or sea robins. The pier is a magnet for lowlifes who blast loud music and talk loud and spook the fish. That’s when they’re not throwing shopping carts, garbage cans and bicycles over the railing. That pier is a very unproductive location for fishing, and so are the other piers.
Yea it can be tough fishing sometimes especially in the heart of summer. Its always good to keep in mind active periods. Most folks tend to be on the nicer side and I have found it does not matter where you are. You will always have people with total disregard be it on a isolated beach or a populated pier. Unfortunately people are gonna do what people do no matter where they are be it urban or rural. I am not a fan of crowds but I do embrace it with herring fishing it seems to be a part of the style of fishing it is.
This is why I only go on July and august there for Spanish mackerel after work. This pier is really disgusting, laud music, smells weed, people are really rude and obnoxious.During my days off I head to Breezy Point.
Respect other fishermen for masking up.
a must thanks Theodore and Have a blessed New Year and wishes for many fishes!
It’s not going to help you catch more or less fish. And your still going to put down when eating it. What’s the point?
