Hey Seth! I was your opponent in match 4. I wanted to say I hate you got unlucky with the land drops. I would have love to go to game 3. But the deck is super sweet! Keep up the sweet brews! :-)
I played teferi-knowledge pool back in 2011-2012 and my friends literally wouldn't play with me if I played that deck. And there was one guy in particular that would want a rules check every single time, even though he had seen it and been told how it works by a judge before. And after getting told by an in person judge that it does intact lock opponents out, he would call the MTG Hotline EVERY SINGLE TIME
The reason I got into modern was your AtO "Owling Mine" deck. I thought of putting Isochron Scepter in because of all the 2-mana instants, like boomerang. Seeing boomerang + iso scept made me think back on that. You really do influence people to play this game, Seth!
Seth: Favorite thing to do in magic is making other players no longer allowed to play magic. Me: 100% on board Seth: Teferi time raveler Me: Hold up, now you've gone too far!
Minor suggestion: if you're playing Fabricate, you probably want something like 1 Tormod's Crypt in the SB. It's obviously not as strong as RIP, but the extra value of being able to tutor for it seems like a big deal.
I'm in heaven... I come alive every time I see a hardlock like this. I remember Teferi pool decks with extreme fondness. Especially the salty eldrazi tron player back then. Still fond memories of that one.
@@Cornelius135 I refuse to play t3feri, just because he is so oppressively un-fun that the rest of the game he is played in is no longer enjoyable to me
I think it's funny that, all these years later, you're finally playing (an updated version of) the deck that introduced you to competitive magic, scepter chant. You've come full circle.
Against Dredge you also could have sideboarded in Celestial Purge, since a large chunk of their creatures are black. Path and Supreme Verdict are also reasonable against them.
This is everything I wanted my Isochron Scepter deck to be. I can't believe I never thought of the interaction between Sceptre and Teferi! This is the bomb-shizzle.
I remember making a Scepter deck back when it first came out using Abeyance and Orim's Chant for a similar lock. Back when Planeswalkers weren't a thing...ah, what a time to play magic :D
Thank you for doing this! I've always wanted to see a list with Isochron + Silence but never had the knowledge of the meta to do it well. Love the deck!
Might i sugest playing Muddle the Mixture over Fabricate? It can find scepter, a few scepter targets, can get imprinted itself and is protection! Edit: the transmute can't be countered too.
Even though I only play EDH, I still watch these video's because not only are they fun to watch, I sometimes pick up some weird combo that I can use in a commander deck. Sometimes multiple video's make up the bulk of one deck :-) So, thanks!
I've been playing Jeskai Scepter Lock as my primary deck since Modern was birthed, so super happy to see Seth run a version of the deck. One thing, gotta be runnin that Muddle the Mixture over Fabricate. Knowledge pool and Creature Teferi seemed superfluous. Hero of Dominaria and Scepter are a BFF and would have run over Jace.
I play a jeskai control varient of this, with lightning bolts and helix's as the eventual win condition, makes those aggressive match-ups much more palatable (and yes silence lock is in too). Love this deck though
This concept was my favorite deck of all time as a kid and still is today though silence wasn't a thing when I first made this deck. I always played it as a red blue land destruction deck with magnivore as a backup finisher and wildfire to wipe the board and lock them out with boomerrang/scepter
I remember when I first really got into playing magic this was a deck my friends hated. I didn't know about specter back then so I had to use elite arcanist.
One of my introductions to Magic was playing against a friend's Scepter \ Orim's Chant deck with my janky casual pile. It was brutal, but eventually I figured out I needed to play instant speed ways to kill Scepter. It was a hard but good way to learn Magic.
I've spent a TON of time studying variants of this deck over the last 2 years. I came to a similar conclusion - when it works it's awesome (and often takes apart top tier decks that don't immediately spew assets onto the battlefield). But it is very hit and miss, especially with aggro. Generally speaking I've found it more successful backing off a bit on the combo in favor of a more control-oriented approach, with the Teferi-Silence combo as one possible line. This combo (even without scepter) is an enormously powerful tempo play, that can yield underestimated benefits in a control-oriented shell. Not the best deck for making friends...
This was a lot of fun. But this is a perfect example of why I want some Legacy Against the Odds. You could the older version of this with Orim's Chant. With that you can even set up the lock with creatures in play.
Didn't realize u could counter suspended cards until u said it n I stopped to think about how the ability works n realized it goes on the stack to remove the time counter n that's when u cast Silence. Very clever
When I was younger, I always wanted to build a deck around exploiting the Scepter. I somehow didn't know about Silence (not sure if it was a card at the time, and I didn't know enough about Gatherer.)
Stoneforge decks are often playing Shark Typhoon these days which is a way to get Teferi off the board and maybe get back into the game, probably why they stuck it out for a while
Fabricate also has the benefit of also fetching Knowledge Pool as a back up if, say for example, the scepter gets thoughtseized and then surgical extracted
Hmm, interesting. Would lose the ability to get Knowledge Pool but being able to find Boomerang (or put Muddle on Scepter in a pinch) might make it worth it anyway.
@@MTGGoldfish I built a similar deck to this and my wincon was actually thing inthe icesince scepter casts the silence. And that way, muddle can also fetch thing as well
Great deck and video, do as many different scepter decks as possible. Just one question Any reason you didn't include Muddle the Mixture to act as a counter spell, Scepter target, and a tutor for a scepter target?
It is funny but one of the best things about 3 mana Teferi is its static ability. Teferi is so strong. Seriously if that were just a Enchantment with the static that does the +1 every turn it would also be really strong.
I had Lapse of Certainty in the deck for a minute, but didn't realize it cost three rather than two so it doesn't work with Scepter. If Memory Lapse was in Modern it would be in the deck for sure. Basically better Delay.
I felt like we were too far behind to take the turn off playing Scepter and that we needed to try to answer some things first. Scepter is pretty sweet once you get to four mana since you can activate it in the same turn. I was hoping our opponent would whiff, we could slow them down with Gusts and then draw lands to Scepter + activate in the same turn.
Why concede when opponent 5 replayed Snapcaster? You could boomerang the Batterskull and Scepter to keep them from recasting it. Opponent would still have a clock, but you'd buy yourself two more turns to draw an out.
i played a good version of this for a while, making it jeskai, with 4 boomerangs, 4 simian, 4 bolt, 4 helix and a few mana leaks and shit, also serum visions over opt because it´s so much better with teferi turn 1 with simian into boomerang scepter means they don´t get to play more than 1 land forever, while any creature based deck basically looses vs path or helix
Could probably do something strong with t3feri and possibility storm -- the same lock as pool -- but with 4 delay and 4 tibalt's trickery for a ton of cheap counters! Not sure how much that matters when youre theoretically locking on t5, so remand or mana leak probably work fine... But being in red for storm means trickery is an option.
Can creature lands or creature generating lands keep a deck running despite the lock? Not saying that it will necessarily win b/c of the creature removal, but is there a hope that a deck with Inkmoths or Castle Ardenvale or such can still put up a fight against the Scepter Lock?
Nothing says 'Against the Odds' like T3feri, JTMS, Path, Remand, Snappy... It's probably the close to the 'best' iso-silence lock deck you can build, but honestly you could replace that with almost anything and it would still be a decent deck.
What about Spellskite? Can negate a small attacker, buy you a load of time, and most importantly protect the Scepter at 0 mana allowing you a decent lock without Tef.
