Love Buzz Shocking Blue, Nirvana and Prodigy(Phoenix)

- love buzz is one of the album tracks of At Home, 1969. it was shocking blue's first album with Mariska on front. It also contains the worldhit Venus. Chris of Nirvana was fan of this album and recorded love buzz in the late 80's on there first album bleach.
here some parts of an interview he gave last week:
Vera Club Seattle
"The first tour in the Netherlands, I remember too well," says Novoselic, the tall bass player who during his first visit to Amsterdam, the band still problems brought by drunk jokes against the police. "We played mainly in youth centers, which gave us the feeling that cultural development of young people in the Netherlands is high on the agenda. Did you know that Seattle is a music club which is called Vera, modeled after the Vera Club in Groningen? Netherlands and of course the land of Shocking Blue, one of my favorite bands. "
So that favorite Nirvana in 1988 and recorded the song Love Buzz released as first single. "I always bought records at a thrift store," says Novoselic. "A dollar a piece, sometimes it was nothing, sometimes fantastic. There I found Shocking Blue. Of course I knew them from their international blockbuster Venus, but the whole album was great. Robbie van Leeuwen and Mariska Veres, great music. At one point we started to fool around in the studio what the riff from Love Buzz, and we have our own version.
i was stationed in Berlin 69-71, listening to radio Luxembourg. fell in love with Mariska Veres may she rest in peace.

i just did... i used to listen nirvana version from like ever... 20 years down the line while browsing the internet i come across this...!!!
I was in the mood to hear the Nirvana version and thought would be a newer cover with some band I never heard, Prodigy, with the Chris, Dave, and Pat. Cool anyway.

This is pretty good...Kurt added the extra riff of the 1st n 2nd strings and the power chords obviously.

The Prodigy is my favorite band, and this is obviously the main sample in Phoenix (off the album Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned). Didn't know Nirvana did a cover, either. My son is obsessed with Nirvana (I love them too, but he named his kitten Kurt Cobain), we'll have to try to learn this one on guitar together!

Thank you for that history! I heard my roommate playing the Nirvana version that I never knew of and it was familiar because I definitely know Prodigy's Phoenix. SO dope that it is from 1969!!! Im gonna look into this group for sure. Wonder why Prodigy called it Phoenix?

well i've heard the "hit" songs like teen spirit and heart shaped box etc. not yet, but i definetely will after hearing the amazingness that is Bleach. the only song i haven't grown to like yet is negative creep.
Not Kurt was a fan of Shocking blue, but Chris had the idea to make a Shocking Blue cover and Kurt agreed. That's how I read about it.

a sort of dutch Jefferson Airplane complete with Grace Slick look alike...even a bit of a "White Rabbit feel to the tune.....good though....
sbilts Jefferson Airplane and Shocking Blue are from the exact time period only miles apart. They startedcsimilar sounds without knowing eachother. How cool is that!
yes, they changed the way how to write their names, even the record companies did not know how to write, but on the Nevermind everything got in it's right place Kurt Cobain finally decided how to write his name

Who cut this video together and were they drunk? Even in the 80s I was noticing videos didn't always match the audio, but this is even worse :D great song and all, but man...what were they thinking? Imagine being in a band and then you get video that's cut like this? :D

Their song The Butterfly and I is at least as good and psychedelic as this one. A pity that Nirvana didn't do that song as well. Let's hope some other good band will discover it and make it a hit.
