I took this spooky map and posed as many Eldrich horror creatures beyond human comprehension as possible doing completely normal things, like going to the store last week.
The best of these GM maps take the ‘Frog in a Pot’ method in telling a good horror story: the subtle changes from civilian to surreal is as undetectable to us, as a frog in a steadily heating pot, until it’s too late.
I don't wanna be That Guy, but the frog in the pot situation is apocryphal. The frog will indeed jump out of the pot once it gets too hot. Alas, the frog that remained in the pot, which made the metaphor, had part of its brain removed, so it didn't notice the temperature rising. It was part of a science experiment by Friedrich Goltz in 1869. But, it is a good idea- the feeling of being in the GM map, not realising something's subtly off, until you're too deep into it. Like blindly walking through a dark room, arms out, and walking straight into something that's definitely not supposed to be there.
The thing I found weird about this map was no street parking, few houses having garages, but a central parking lot for the neighborhood. It's like someone unfamiliar with American suburbia tried to make American suburbia based on their existing expectations. Also there's some stuff under the map.
The houses also don't look American either, they seem more North/Central European than anything, as opposed to the neocolonial and split-level ranch architecture that typically dominates American suburbia, plus American houses usually have more space between them. I could be wrong though.
The Netherlands: Dense walkable areas - check Small cozy houses - check Old school architecture - check I think the librarian would like a map like this based in the Netherlands
I looked this up once - I believe baths are just as sanitary as showers unless you're *really* dirty. If you're bathing regularly, either will keep you just as clean!
I remember how mind-blowing it was as a kid visiting a new friend's house down the street, and realizing their house was just a slightly different variant of mine. With the same floor plan and everything, but different in a lot of other ways like walls and flooring and decorations. As a kid, it was a surreal experience for me. Even now that I know it's a common thing, it's still really interesting to me when I see it. I guess it's only even more common these days with newer houses, where you will see the same 3 houses copy-pasted 8 times on one street.
17:40 I slept in an AirBnB house that was built in the early 1900s and it showed. Not a single light anywhere aside from a corner lamp, total gulf of darkness whenever I went to bed. Despite it having a full-length mirror and a rocking chair in the corners of the room, which I expected to give me untold nightmares, it was unironically the most comfortable and restful sleep I've ever had and I wish I could go back to it. It was probably the king sized bed that helped with the sleep, but even still the darkness felt somehow comforting to be in
Architects of back then really were on to something. Luckily for us any portable compact LED flashlight also works as a bedside lamp if needed, so that darkness doesn't become inconvenient or dangerous.
I love maps with backgrounds like this: a lit up city in the dark. I always loved looking at the lights of the city, wondering what was going on down the hill. I spend more time staring at the background of Downtown in Holywood in Vampires the Masquerade than playing the damn game xD
I love the premise or concept of an experience where you explore each house and learn about the inhabitants and bonus points for being spooky. Like an SCP agent walking into an emptied town and having to clear it and explore it.
Yeah in fact it’s really good they don’t exist and never did everyone that pretends otherwise is just gaslighting themselves that they exist and not only is a thing of movie and imagination.
Empty maps like this always make me think of the premise of Ara and the Empty Universe. Everyone is gone, you don't know why, and you're now searching for any signs of life. All the while you're making judgements on the living conditions people were in, especially if it happens to be especially abnormal.
36:28 That's probably meant to be a continuous sidewalk. They are much safer and more pedestrian friendly than typical crosswalks, where it's just painted markings on the asphalt. Many towns across Europe have these, but they are quite rare in America.
Also, if you're a huge fan of creepy and comfy vibes, you'd enjoy living in Wisconsin. Almost the whole state is like that, but some places are definitely more than others. Like, Tomah has always given me that feeling. For me personally because the Tomah hospital is where a lot of my family members have passed away. But also the Lake Koshkonong area.
Hello Librarian! I’m going through some serious mood swings (like, the worst I’ve ever had) and watching you always helps me center and relax. Thank you ❤
Actually, I had explored gm_noryhbury before and felt all the things you were talking about, I felt it all, but I couldn't put it all into words. Good job on that!
@38:33 I wonder this about cheeses and other fermented things, as well as things like tobacco and the other leafy thing. Who saw that and said 'Imma do these things in this particular order and get a tasty thing or go on a journey.'? A brave person, that's who.
I love the look of this game! It looks like so much fun. I really enjoy this channel. There are only three UA-camrs that narrate while playing through that I can listen to without getting annoyed --the librarian is one of them.
Hey there Librarian! I noticed you missed a small section of the map, which starts behind the house where the pool table and bar are located. I won't spoil the rest as your genuine reaction is important! Cheers :)
That first spacious house being so big and empty besides furniture in its corners reminds me of like how I imagine the house interiors from South Park look irl, they always felt super empty and spacious, but maybe that's just me
YES someone else understands that feeling of liking to look at/into people's houses on walks!! I never know how to describe that to others but i LOVE doing that. it's like... I wish I could just go inside people's houses and see what their home is like. How it's decorated, whats going on and the architecture like you said. I try so hard not to stare on walks because I know it looks creepy but I just love... houses?? Idk??? Also the fact that you think silent jumpscares are superior and mentioned how a fantastic type of horror is when it looks like something is there, and then you said Hereditary as an example. I will preach about silent jumpscares until the day I DIE they're so underutilized. Thank you for having correct opinions
My Aunt used to tell me that large parts of housing on Long Island were built with the same blueprint. She called them Levit houses. I guess like Levitown?
aw man FINALLY THIS CAME OUT! I played this map and explored and suprisingly enjoyed it, i thought it would be a good map for librarian to play so i suggested it in his discord server! and after a bit of waiting it came out!
Fun fact in Oklahoma there's still 24/7 dinars I used to go to them with my dad homeless person watching character playing the game on the attic and just like cheering them on and just like drinking every time that would be funny
I’m not sure why but this map reminded me of the death toll map from left 4 dead. Speaking of left 4 dead maps I feel like those would make for some really interesting locations to explore in VR! Anyways another amazing video as always!
the lack of stairs is actually incredibly big brain- can't forget to clip em if they aren't there ',:) EDIT: right as i said that he mentioned the auto clip mod
On old vs new streetlights: The older streetlights were behind the metal barriers around the parking lot. That style of fencing around it seems... Like an odd choice. Kinda flimsy. The placement implies that the older streetlights were installed with the parking lot instead of just being part of the sidewalk, which I would assume to be older.
Hammer editor is probably as far into 3D modeling as I will ever get. It is a very solid tool for its purpose. I've only made a couple maps for HL2DM with it in my life, but once I got the hang of it (especially the slice tool), I could do almost anything.
gm_NorthBury looks like an interesting Suburban Town. Unfortunately no people or even any animals in the neighborhood area. Also the only corner of the map that is light up you could have probably gotten to by NoClip and or also checked under the whole neighborhood to see if there was probably any Ester Eggs.
Ngl, my house has a big ass window in the master bathroom right in front of the toilet. Not sure why it's laid out that way but I've never had the need to open the blinds on that window...
Librarian you really need to play myst online URU live (again) Its no horror but it really fir your style, its 100% exploration and the atmosphere and setting is amazing, there so kany stuff (story) that you can trace just by looking around and thats not even reading the book and text that you found in the game
Your generation should demand those things back. Gen X worked to get 247 stores and the like because WalMart and it’s like gave that to us in return for cancelling the mom and pop stores. Now that they’re gone, you can tell that that structure was costly for the stores because no one is in a hurry to go back but they should. Cuz that savings is going back into their pocket not yours or mine. Pandemic was more about resetting things for companies and starting the delivery system than your or my health…
I know you like creepypastas, so you’re probably aware of Ben Drowned and thus I think you would like Zelda: Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask. They are both creepy and kind of comfy at times with Majora’s Mask being more creepy but Ocarina of time is still really good and is much easier. After you played Mario B3313 I figured you might be playing less traditionally scary games so I think that this game would be perfect. (P.S.) You should probably emulate the game if you don’t want to buy a original N64.

Referring to American suburbia as “just like frogger” Is messes up from how true it is
The thing I found weird about this map was no street parking, few houses having garages, but a central parking lot for the neighborhood. It's like someone unfamiliar with American suburbia tried to make American suburbia based on their existing expectations.
Also there's some stuff under the map.
Huh, interesting point.
I also noticed the lack of garages and thought of something similar. Maybe this is a dreamscape of a non-American child or something?
The houses also don't look American either, they seem more North/Central European than anything, as opposed to the neocolonial and split-level ranch architecture that typically dominates American suburbia, plus American houses usually have more space between them.
