I think i still have a ways to go, but I can feel I am developing certain muscle memory for certain shots. Hope I can keep developing it, glad youre enjoying the ride
It really depends on what you want to shoot. I think some of these formats are quirkier than others, and if you want really dramatic closeups these taller frames are much more immersive. I also want to shoot more of these taller formats
Oh man... this has to be my favorite video of yours. Every shot was beautifully textured and done w/ intent for the aspect ratio. IDK how you do it, but keep doing it king!
Lovely work as usual, and great soundtrack. I feel like 2.39 got so overused in 2018, but when done properly, the point you made about periphery stands true no matter what. Just ordered a Sigma FP by the way - thanks for the inspiration!
hey thanks! i will also make some free rec709 conversion to optimize the luts, currently available on discord, though i've only made one for the sigma fp so far. Blackmagic and Sony next
*Dood can I just say your work is absolutely stunning and I can see you blasting through 6K subscribers in the future. Well done :))* Were you using the Otis or Milvus on this shoot say at @7:49? Amazing :)) I have a s5ii and you've peaked my interest to try a Zeiss... I see you're using l mount too what adapter did you use to fit the EF Zeiss? Cheers
I used only the Zeiss Otus for this video, mostly wide open. I leave the technical info at the end of each video after the credits, the EF L adapter I'm using is the Sigma mc21 i believe, I've put it in the video description too. Zeiss is very expensive and an endgame lens for video. For photography, it may be a bit too 3d for...let's say fashion with its 3d pop field curvature, it will be up to personal preference. I only use Zeiss lenses so if you are like me and chase image fidelity then Zeiss/Leica are king.
What's most important is within the 4 sides of this box. Would cinema be different if film had a different shape back in the day? BTW was this shot on the sigma fp? If so, these are beautiful images👍
I will never stop being amazed how you come up with these ideas! Great work! Congragts on your website launch. Curious what I can cook with your luts on my favorite Sigma FP:)
The luts seem to work really well with that camera. I’ll probably make camera specific versions as well my personal rec709 conversation for free to optimize the luts
More videos please!! And do you still use the BMCC6k? I just bought one and i'm considering the Zeiss Milvus lenses, but i'm not that sure. Your content is the only one that uses the BMCC6k and Milvus/Otus lenses in a cinematic way. I'll love to see more of that. I watched all your videos. Maybe you could review more lenses, like budget anamorphic ones, like the Sirui Saturn or Blazars. I'm considering the Nisi's Athenas but they lack a lot of character in my opinion. Do you use mist filters or vnds?
Next video has considerable bmcc6k and milvus footage, i would say the image on the blackmagic is sharper, I prefer the softer Otus over sharper milvus with that combination, you will be able to judge for yourself. I buy all of my gear so far so I normally wouldn’t buy a lens unless it was very compelling. Nisi Athena are considerably more boring than Zeiss imo. Dzo Arles are very good. I don’t use mist filters, I use a Nisi vnd
@@clever_ghost Yeah! I Can't wait for that video. I bought the BMCC because they made a 40% disccount on the camera. I want to focus on cinematography only. But i don't know which lenses should i pick first, i cannot even decide between spherical and anamorphic yet. I can't afford the ottus, so the milvus seem very compelling, but i doubt of its performance on high movement scenes, i'm worried about the focus breathing and the lack of versatility. Also the mounting. Do you know about other alternative that looks like the milvus/ottus? And what are you thoughts on the anamorphic look?
@@aumon you can check out my zeiss otus 55 video for more detailed thoughts, but i will say i do like anamorphics like ALFA for their wide 2x and waterfall bokeh. I prefer spherical for their precision and flexibility. You dont always want 2.39 especially for commercial work. Milvus are my recommended value lens, you can also consider DZO, Sigma art, Canon or Nikon lenses. Otherwise you have vintage glass, which becomes subjectively characterful. EF is a fine mount, nearly every camera can adapt for EF just like PL.
Great reflections on a complex mix of issues here. I tend to agree wider formats have a more psychologically immersive effect on me. But less so on smaller device screens, where using the whole real estate available is more important than ratio IMO: so on devices, another vote here for 2:1.
I agree with your arguments which is why I prefer 2.39 as my Xperia 10 phone has 1:2.33 display. BTW it is a great AR for a smartphone: it accommodates more text vertically while the narrow proportion makes it feel like a considerably smaller device in hand.
@@omichalek Now you mention it, I can see that 1:2+ ARs make a lot of sense for reading landscape - I have an older iPhone, and dont tend to update unless there's a feature I want... now you've given me a reason to upgrade LOL!
Dude can you just make a short film already? You're really good at this. PS. I see you're using the XH2s. Looks much better than I thought. Is it supported in ACES?
this video was completely shot on the Sigma FP, I use fujifilm only for photography now, but i will revisit in the summer when flog2 is supported natively in Davinci. I personally think fujifilm is the best camera when it comes to film emulation particularly kodak and fujifilm film stocks. I think in the summer there could be ACES support, need to wait for the update
No way 😂 I really thought it was the xh2s. You manage to make both cameras look almost equally good Is it just me or does the sigma fp have dynamic range comparable to the full frame sonys?
@@shueibdahir That's likely more the Zeiss Otus look, which i use for all my cameras. I put the technical specs at the end of the video. You know, the dynamic range feels oddly good, but all test results say it's like 12 or 12.5 stops. I can't say for certain, but it feels like 13 or maybe more, it's very impressive
@@clever_ghost I have a slight suspicion it's a bit over 13 stops total with 11 being somewhat clean. By the way how's the sigma in dc crop mode? Does the lowlight capability become worse with crop sensor lenses? I might buy it within the next 6 lonths
@@shueibdahir It is sharper as it is 1:1 pixel readout. To be honest, I think i prefer the softer rendering of full frame, which has some downsampling going on, but looks great. I'm not sure, but I think the lowlight capabilties should be similar, it depends on the glass, t1.4 is t1.4 right
So this video is 16:10, which is 1.6. It’s not a native camera resolution so I had to crop to get this aspect ratio, I think I prefer a little more letterboxing to direct the focus a bit more
Personally the square boxy ones make me feel hemmed in, compressed like a straight jacket. 16:9. Etc feel relief freedom natural. Just my feelings. Thanks. Laurie. NZ. 😊
I just checked, you are correct esp the taller formats, luckily they are consistently inaccurate so they are compared relatively correctly. i have updated the descriptions and apologies

2:1 looks good, is a "democratic" format and gives a little bit of room to correct tilted horizon.
