Dear Ghosts, I’ve just received my replacement and I will update the ongoing long term review as soon as possible: cleverghost.net/blog/dzoarles21mm In the meantime you can check out my current detailed impressions of the Arles on my blog or check out other written content I’ve made including reviews, music and movie recommendations on my website. I’m also making the music for the main theme of this video available free for download on Discord and Patreon, so please check it out and say hi! discord.gg/FTQAyWmavs Spend wisely. Love, Ghost
In my kit are laowa 10mm 2.8, 20mm Sony and 24-70 sigma II The laowa 10mm has blown me away as it is rectilinear with amazing image quality and macro capabilities. As i mostly shoot anamorphic, I really enjoy using a 40mm anamorphic on a full frame combined with the 10mm Laowa. It is the most wow factor combination
Wide lens are just amazing! When you push in or out, close to a surface, they feel like they are moving faster. Whilst giving the opposite when panning. I also love that when panning, the distortion gives another added perspective, cutting to or from a compressed tele lens, this gives movement to the story, feeling you are moving in or away from the subject, without actually doing so. They are great for establishing clips and give the audience a view of the location or environment. A great addition to anyone's kit! I even go wider with my 16mm.
I prefer Zeiss as well, but they don’t make a 21mm Otus and the milvus 21mm is just okay. I now realize how the Otus aren’t clinical lenses at all, they have quite a strong look, just modern
I’m such a clever ghost fanboy. And I really appreciate your comparison thoughts with the Otus line. Sounds like you got Arles 21mm as a solution to expand your Otus Set while maintaining 1.4 consistency? Otherwise you would have just gotten the milvus 21mm f/2.8 huh?
I was too curious about the Arles, was like an itch. I could have gotten the milvus but I really do like f2 also I think Arles are closer to Otus in sharpness and 3d pop despite the faults
I know it’s an F2.8/T2.9 but the Zeiss ZE/ZF 21mm 2.8 or the CP.2/CP.3 is such a great lens worth checking out too. The CP.3 version was used to film all the trench scenes in the best cinematography winner All Quiet on the Western Front.
I use a dpl ssd enclosure which requires no cables through the usbc port. It has some noise but it’s so convenient. I can read more here www.cleverghost.net/blog/sigmafpreview
Sigma is impressive but doesn’t have the dimensionality I’m interested in. Leica makes lenses on par with Zeiss, but I don’t really contact these companies I purchase all my cameras and lenses, they are more personal to me
Thanks for the feedback, I’ve done some videos on HDR, need to buy proper equipment first. It is a long term goal since UA-cam performance is significantly better in hdr
This is a great review. I do wonder how it stacks up against the Irix 21mm F1.5. I expect the DZO is better, if anything for its more practical front optic design, but I was able to snag the Irix for just $650 on eBay.
Most lenses are very close at f5.6, but I personally prefer lenses only if they have a 3d look to them, the dzo are the only ones that have a comparable Zeiss pop
Do you know why there's like a halo effect on this video? I have always wondered why that happens when editing DNG or RAW files pushing them too much. I mean, what's the name of the effect or how to avoid it or fix it. They look like a halo or barrier between contrasting lines, it appears on the edges. A bright halo that gets between two dark areas.
@@TheGoodContent37 I believe this is the result of exposing too high and bringing it down too much in post. It can happen on blackmagic or Arri cameras
Very interesting share! I associate him with Jaws, Schindler's List and Saving Private Ryan so I've considered him a more medium spherical focal length kind of guy
The 15 and 21 use an old optical design (cp3 or Zeiss classic I think) the 18 has a newer design but they are all f2.8 so these are the only ultrawides with pop that are fast. I really like f2 so I prefer these. But milvus have better distortion and color. Overall I think these have a more premium look than Milvus wides
Yes, I wouldn’t have bought this lens if it wasn’t close. There are differences you can read in my blog, but I’ll say if the conditions are right you could match them with some work. The 3d pop is there, but there are levels, but the sharpness and clarity from Zeiss is its own tier
"Most thought provoking focal length in cinema right now" - sorry, what? Why not just say, it's my favorite? Or "A 21mm perspective feels the most thought-provoking to me." Why the absurd absolutes? It's not like any of this is objective. Language like that removes any sense of personal ownership or agency. That, unless you're saying something is "the X most thing in Y" it's not a valuable opinion. And that's crap. It's not some objective thing, the weather or the value of the dollar. No focal length is inherently more provocative of thought than another. Only to you. Please, as a fan and viewer of your channel, its enough to just say your opinion without some made-up qualifier that doesn't really exist but makes you sound legit. Your taste is what is legit. Your eye, your opinion, the way YOU see the world, not the way "cinema" is right now, that matters. Pretty lens, by the way.
This sentence serves as a hook to lead to set the premise of why they are popping up in cinema everywhere. I find it confusing that this soft hyperbole offends you so, I could have easily said something as meaningless as 'it's the most cinematic lens right now', but I stand by the wording. If you follow the subsequent section, I argue for their novelty and creative utility. I'm not even sure you can objectively say a standard 50mm focal length has as much creative implications as an ultrawide and the fact that they have only just made these new lenses as fast and clean has opened up the visual language, which do inspire thought from creators evident from numerous such releases in 2024. In any case, saying "in my opinion" before every sentence would make for uncompelling writing and it shouldn't need to be prefaced that every statement in a personal video is subjective. So no, I don't find this an absurd absolute even if I failed convince you. But I do always try to present my images honestly to allow you to reach the opposite conclusion so your feedback is still welcome.

It's been a while since I watched your videos, and you have improved very well!
Great frames, colors, timing, and tone mood.
Nice video!
What else, if not the pursuit?
I'd frame the shot at 0:59 and put it on my wall. nice work.
I will also take a print of 3:46
maybe need to hang it next to your play button soon

Such a good review and I LOVE that you made it little nightmares themed! So good all around! Now I'm in the market for a 21mm hahaha

18mm would be a lot more fun. But also I’m using a 16:9 sensor so it’s slightly narrower
@cleverghostchili nice! Yeah the video looks great. I'll be shooting on a 16:9 sensor as well the BMPCC 6K Pro

Was it 21mm on a super 35 sensor? Or a true FF 21 mm? 21 mm on s35 yields a 33mm fov. I used a 1.6x crop factor for a DCI aspect ratio.
@@hhankx It's more like 1.4x as super 35 film is larger than the APS-C format. Spielberg has never shot digital I don't think.

Weak
This definitely doesn’t look as good as Zeiss lenses. I’d rather use higher end photo lenses(Leica,Zeiss) than cheap cinema lenses.
Well that was constructive. Maybe you could share a vidéo of your work so we could understand better with your Lens/footage/caméra set-up.
I don’t to give away all my secrets
All roads lead to Zeiss. However, there is always a place for subtlety and the Arles are less conspicuous
@ There plenty of videos out there using Red,Leica and Blackmagic cameras using Zeiss,Leica R and Leica M lenses.
@ Have you looked into the new Cooke SP3 lenses? I’m interested in trying them.
