@Ewan Callister I was just mentioning about Churchil's profound distrust in communism. Had Operation Unthinkable happen, the entire world would've dismissed the Western Allies for being a bunch of traitors, even more than the Germans back in 1941.
He also rallied the british people to fight for thier king and country and re-energized the Allies moral.
"We shall defend our island whatever the cost may be" gives me goosebumps every time i hear it. It has such passion in it, Gary Oldman is one of the greatest actors of our time

I asked a Veteran if Canada was prepared to carry on the struggle if Britain had fallen. He simply replied "The British Lion and the Canadian beaver would have never failed."
"And to outlive the menace of tyranny. If necessary, for years...if necessary, alone." To me this was the line that stuck with me the most from the entire well-known speech. Powerful words to remember whenever you feel overwhelmed by the odds, and at only the very beginning of something difficult with little to encourage you that you can prevail. Oldman delivered this line masterfully.

My mum and dad lived through these years, and I asked them once if they ever once thought we might lose. My mum said 'never'.
And they said it was because of this man.
Churchill was made to lead us. It was his destiny.
I went to England and Europe. I walked the length of Omaha Beach and swam in it. Cold as hell. I think W.C. would have approved. Went to the tower of London and took the tour. The guide told me where Churchill was buried. So I went there and stood there for five minutes and held my salute. I represent my ancestors, the people of the "new world." We came to the rescue because Great Britain is a democracy. That's what we were trying to preserve. And Winston Churchill was our point man in that endeavor. Defending freedom and civility alone with that righteous iron will. I don't mean to be cheeky but I think the three greatest Americans to ever live were George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, and Winston Churchill.

But they did surrender. They surrendered their empire in a war that didn't need to happen. Hitler tried for peace multiple times and it fell on deaf ears. They would be in a much better position today if they had listened to Oswald Mosley.

"He mobilized the English language and sent it into battle" . I think this has many connotations and is a great play on words. All through his speech (in the English language) he emboldened his fellow member of the Parliament who were considering the possibility of surrender, he inspired his nation in a "dark moment" in their history and he also reached out to the USA to join into the War, all of whom were member of the English speaking world .
Gary Oldman nailed his role as Winston Churchill. That Oscar that he won was long overdue, all the way back to when he was in Bram Stoker's Dracula. Both performances were flawless.
He played a jive-talking scumbag pimp with a glass eye and dreads in "True Romance" and if you understood how *difficult* it would be for any normal American to be able to learn that "speech pattern" and accent, much less a BRITISH actor, then you realize that Gary Oldman is on a whole different level than anybody else out there. His only rival is Daniel Day Lewis.
Honestly I didn't care for "Bram Stoker's Dracula" but not due to Gary Oldman's performance, he was just an actor doing his job. But damn it I LOVED this movie! Gary became Winston and this movie became a time machine!
I've just finished watching this movie today, and it is amazing 10/10
Britain lost a great deal during and after the war. Many of its cities shattered, thousands upon thousands dead, the nation bankrupt, its empire falling apart, etc. But Britain did stand alone against tyranny in Europe, Africa and Asia and never once relented. We owe the British a great deal for not bowing to the Nazis and Japanese during those dark years.

in '39 my dad aged 19 worked his passage across the Irish sea from Dublin to Liverpool. He enlisted upon arrival, he heard the call and he answered. He fought in North Africa, Italy, Holland, France and finally Germany. He came through without a scratch on him and a WO2 fried egg on his wrist. When I asked him about his time all he'd ever say is, 'I was lucky, plenty of better men didn't make it'.
Years later when I became a soldier my dad attended my PoP wearing his WW2 medals and rank. During the drinks afterwards my training corporals, sergeant and leftenant treated dad like a God. I found it funny to see these people who had dominated my for months showing reverence to the man who used to carry me upstairs to bed, tuck me in and read me stories.

One of the most heartwarming comments I've ever seen.
The speech used in the movie, delivered on June 4, 1940, is not considered his finest of the period, although it does perhaps resonate best with American audiences today. The speech that is generally considered to be his best, was delivered 2 weeks later, and once again mentions the USA. It was said to have deeply affected FDR and increased his resolve to eventually come to Britain's aid.

I dunno, to the British this is the speach that everyone remembers. The speach you refer to is one of his better speaches, but its not as well known to the British people.
Also its worth noting this speach doesn't mention the US at all, the "new world" comment here refers to the rest of the empire (mainly Canada and Australia which were basically already independant), which at this time was the only guranteed friend Britian had, the US government was staunchly anti-war still and at this point couldn't be expected to provide even a modicum of support.
@@cgi2002 You sound like you are American. Because in England of that period, "The New World" refers specifically to the Americas, Not Australia. My father fought in the war, and this is the speech they remember. So if your teachers told you otherwise, they are mistaken.
And as I pointed out, Winston Churchill two weeks later specifically mentioned the United States. As you say, the US was anti-war themselves, but that wouldn't stop FDR from helping Britain.
In a Secret Session of the House two days after the finest hour speech, Churchill gave his view that the USA would not support Britain if they thought it was down and out. The best chance of American intervention was the spectacle of Britain engaged in a heroic struggle. Already the US had promised Britain the fullest aid with munitions; after the US November elections, Churchill had no doubt, the whole English-speaking world would be in line together.

I am also aware that the new world usually did refer to the US about 100 years before this point, but in this context he was talking about the empire itself, which was also the new world in the context he was using.
The speach your referring too (the finest hour one) was specifically written with the US in mind, as an attempt to make them realise this was also their war, this speach was exclusively for parliament as it was his one and only chance to keep them from folding and negotiating.

Also I'm not saying that the colonies were referred to as "the new world" commonly or in any other context, I am saying in this context they were "the new world that would come after the old has fallen" basically that they would be the future should the old world, aka Britian fall. They never got the opportunity to become the new world in the way he intoned, since the old world never fell. Churchill was as you say, very well educated, and he was using language here in such a way as to imply that there was regardless of what happened, a future.
If he meant the US, he'd have said the US, but he didn't because he knew his audience, and he knew that telling them to rely on the US to help at this point wasn't ideal as they'd already publicly refused to help, instead he told them to rely on the empire itself, and that it was strong, strong enough to be a whole new world should it need to be.

A great performance for a great moment in history. They had every reason to think they would lose with vile enemies at their gates, but one man stood up and defiantly said not on my watch and rallied the people behind him. He was he was an imperfect man, but he saved western civilization.

I am so proud of my parent's generation. Outnumbered, outmanoeuvred, outgunned and defeated they actually stood up against the most effective and efficient military force the world had ever seen, suffered severe rationing, bombing, loss of many lives and great destruction all without (initially) the hope of salvation.
I am convinced that one of the many reasons they did so was because of this man. I am proud of them all, of what they did, and what they suffered and the fact that had they not done what they did, and gave way to Hitler, then Europe and the world would be a very different and unpleasant place today.

Churchill gave people real hope. Do not say words are not powerful. If you can find the right ones , at the right time, and in apply them in the right place, they are always the most powerful weapon. Nazi Germany lost the day this speech was made.
You overestimate UKs role in WW2. Germany lost when it choose to split its army in russia and not retreat in Stalingrad. At the very least when it declared war on the US. Not when the UK decided whether or not to give up.
@@seb_5969 if the UK made peace with the Third Reich, then Hitler could've focused on the USSR and likely won Stalingrad instead. But with the lingering threat of Britain and its allies forced Germany to divide its forces for a defense of a possible Western Front and the East. Churchill's impact in policy during WWII was extremely decisive as it also made Britain a staging ground for the imminent invasion during D-Day.

Yeah the soviets did do more in the war technically, especially in terms of the ground war. But this speech rallied the entire west from a deep slumber, and it clarified the stakes in a way that made unified western participation possible.
The British defense of the Isles are why America joined. We saw decent people with a shared history staring down the darkest of things.
And so soon after this, we started pumping up Britain and the Soviets with tanks and equipment that it wasn't possible for them to make themselves.
Also the Soviets were already in a war of attrition and it wasn't clear who would win. I do believe this speech caused the west to find it's mettle, join the battle in earnest, open up a true second front, and broke the back of a terrible enemy. I do not think the soviets could have done it alone.

You don’t understand that after this speech was made, almost 300,000 men were brought back home to GB rescued by the largest civilian fleet ever assembled (Operation Dynamo) Soon after this, the Blitz started. The British people went on with their lives and even their businesses after their towns were getting bombed 10 months straight by the Germans. But never did they surrender. And much of that credit for them never surrendering goes to Churchill. He propelled his people and gave them a leader to look up to and to never give up or surrender to tyranny. The end of the Blitz happened in September of 1941, and soon after Pearl Harbor was bombed in the following December where America intervened in the war. But you don’t get that Hitler wanting to take over GB was one of his biggest mistakes in the war. By focusing on GB, he let the Soviet Union gain strength and power and prepare for war and then Hitler made his biggest mistake:attacking Russia on their homeland in WINTER lol And into that battle, America was also gaining territory and beginning to win the war. You truly don’t understand what Winston Churchill meant to the war at all, or Great Britain. By the way, I’m American through and through. But NEVER again say that ppl overestimate what GB meant to the Allies victory in WW2. Those people lost 50,000 lives in the Blitz bombing raids and they STILL NEVER UTTERED A WORD OF SURRENDER, AND MOST OF THOSE PEOPLE AFTER THE WAR SAID IT WAS CHURCHILL WHO GAVE THEM THE COURAGE. By the way, the amount of ppl GB lost during the air raids alone was more than HALF as many people as they lost in the ENTIRETY of WW2 itself. Please never speak on history again if you don’t know it. The day Hitler lost was the day Winston Churchill gave this speech. A speech heard around the entire world. An absolute legend, he fought against the storm when it was at its pinnacle, and we came out on top because of it. As an American I recognize his brilliance in fighting the Nazis to the UK's last breath. Good stuff Churchill, much love from the states!

The declaration of independence, The Magna Carta, The Emancipation Proclamation, and The Darkest hour speech. These can be easily counted among the greatest English speaches ever performed. No matter if the speaker wrote them or not the effect they have had on the world in undeniable.

What many forget is that although the Germans considered Britain (the world’s superpower at the time) as a military equal, the empire was guarded by what was colloquially known as the imperial fleet, the greatest navy to ever sail the seas. The German war machine produced such immense land force projection which swept across Europe, and Britain was no numerical match for that - an island seafaring nation. It was by and large the Royal Navy that saw Britain through to victory and enabled the country to fight across all 5 continents, on every front, in defence of the homeland and the empire.
He was the last spark of brilliant madness that lead the British to make continents bow to an island.

I am historian... I am 37, I watched this scene 100 times in last 4 years, I read about WW2 entire life, but I never understood this speech like I understand it now... in this world we're living now, and again... it's repeating.

@@bruh4004 but that’s just not true Russia could only mobilise due to the nazis concentrating on the allies who could only operate in the European theatre due to the British holding out and its amazing intelligence operations like the cracking of the enigma machine the fact is if the British surrendered the nazis would have won the us had no way to fight Germany without British bases which would of kept them out of the war until the nazis moved onto them Russia would have be crushed by the war machine
This makes me feel patriotism for britain even though i have never been there.
