I just treasure that Shad, who didn't play much of the games and didn't know the lore until recently, knows more about the lore than the company that created the live action series. Just a little research goes a long way Paramount.

I actually agree on 2, but I will fully admit that might be because I had discovered the joy of having 2 monitors for 2 windows and had other stuff I was monitoring at the same time (also didn't play until the MC collection). Everyone says it's the best one for story, but...IDK
3 was more about the characters than the plot, but it had a significant amount of story in it. I played it first of any of the series, but even I knew it was a sequel, because it felt like an ending to a long story
Personally I love 1's story the most, both in content and presentation

It's intentional. Stop putting it off as incompetence. 343 has wanted to change our perception of Halo since the whole split happened. The man who got ahold of the lore Bible and was left in charge when the others left, hated the original concepts of the story.
They WANT to destroy your beloved stories. It is NOT incompetence it is malice.
The only real Halo is Bungie Halo. Even then some questionable decisions in Reach.

One of the things that really pissed me off with this episode is how they failed to understand John's past and history that lay the foundations for who is he is. The show shows him as being a good kid and has him save the boy that was being rough on the rope bridge. In actual cannon, John was a total bully as a kid. He was very arrogant and self centered with a bit of superiority complex. He knew he was stronger and faster than other kids and made sure they knew two. When Halsey found him he was playing king of the hill with some other kids and being very rough and aggressive to maintain title of king. One of the first training exercises was a team obstacle course where that last team to the end doesn't get supper. John was the first to reach the end, however the other three members of his team were last and therefore he was punished along with them for coming in last regardless of the fact he personally, was first. After this he has a bit of self reflection and during a later exercise with similar rules, they were all scattered around in a forest a few miles from base and the last to return got no supper, he organizes a plan to get everyone back to base at the same time so no one goes without food. Through his leadership and the group working together they all get back at the same time and no one goes hungry. He goes from self centered jerk, to noble leader who looks out for his fellow spartan.

The American marine corps did an examination of female combatants, actually. It is quite telling and highly recommended as a read-through. Not only do they perform less well in combat overall, but have a much higher risk of killing or injuring non-combatants, as well as causing injuries to their own bodies from strain just by carrying military equipment. Just to name a few issues.

Things are a little different in sci-fi, because in most sci-fi properties, medical science has advanced to the point of offering genetic modifications that enhance strength, reflexes, and focus, though usually the improvements are minor. It still wouldn't realistically put women on par with men physically, all other things being equal. It would probably at least make them viable though.

We’ll have a new team come in with some fresh eyes to pick up where I left off, which I think is kind of great for the show. Just to keep bringing in new people. It's such a big world that it takes 10 times more work and energy than any normal show."
Constantly bringing in new people and getting rid of people has never helped modern shows. Usually, it's a sign that things are very, very wrong. The sequel trilogy of Star Wars is a prime example of this.

I'm with Oz. Nothing will beat the original Halo trilogy. Halo CE took inspiration from the best of 1980s-1990s sci-fi like Aliens and Starship Troopers. By Halo 2 the story took on its own clear identity. At that point we had never seen an original FPS with so much great world building.
343 Halo was made by people who thought the original Halo series was weak on story and needed to be reformatted around other popular FPS tiltes. That's why 4-5 took such a radical shift. And yet even THAT garbage is somehow better than this show

    • @apollohateshisdayjob9606
      @apollohateshisdayjob9606 2 роки тому +2

I think they both have it somewhat right, and it depends on the exact definition used.
Common definition is more like the arbitrary thing that drives character motivations. The blue diamond from Titanic is a good example in that sense, but it can have a use besides, such as the Enigma machine in U571.
Depending on definition, some consider Ryan from Saving Private Ryan to be a Macguffin, or the Horcruxs from Harry Potter. Both of those technically do something, but their primary story purpose is just to drive characters from one point in the story to another

@@photosyntheticzee9915 agree with you there are definitely those who prefer a more lighthearted tone. But from a universe standpoint reach and odst work and compliment the story from the previous games. Plus the humor in the original halo's, maybe unintendidly so, stands, from a storytelling perspective, as a defience of humans in front of unsormountable odds and a belief to never give up, which thematically, reach and odst also represent quite well. Plus CE and 2 also had their very serious parts with CE's sudden horror twist at the end of the game and 2's tragic story of the arbiter, full of betrayal and trials that challanged his own belief system. There is definitely a larger focus on humor in CE, 2 and 3 but overall the 5 games bungie made match thematically and represent a unified, well... universe, something that 343 and as you said, destiny, lack. So thankful that you guys are doing these reviews and talking about this stuff. My other source on this series is Arch with his ArchCast channel with Kibs. But seriously. I've played most of the Halo games and its thanks to Oz that the gulf between Bungie and 343 on the lore of Halo is even more stark to me. I never dived into any of the lore of Halo like I did with 40K. So I've been reliant on others to tell me this sort of stuff but the more I'm learning from Oz in this series of yours. The more I'm looking at pop culture & hobbies and just going. "How far they have truly fallen." Cause 40K 9th Edition right is just. Well there is word that they are doing Space Marine Codex 2.0 for this Edition, to bring them up to scratch in this Edition. And they were one of the first codex's & armies to get updated. And with Chaos just over the Horizon or approaching it. It took me 5 battles with Space Marines to win 1 victory. And that's really only because the timer ran out. Otherwise. 9th Edition is broken!

(16:00) I'm an American armed forces service member for all you Aussies in the comments. American military members allow Females to sign up for direct combat roles. Fighter pilots being a prime example. Female pilots fly and fight just as well as male pilots. However roles like Infantry and Special operations are where we see the main problem. Modern Infantry men are pushed to the extreme and operate in the most inhospitable environments in laymen's terms. It's fucking hard. 90% of American MEN couldn't deal with the mental and physical stresses of modern ground combat. It's not impossible and it has been done. But it's not the rule.

The only thing that would really change is the immediate aftermath. If she'd snapped once the bullets stopped flying, I'd understand. But during? Not a chance. @@dram3711 If you can swap out the item in question with a rubber sock, and the plot doesn't change, that's when it's a Macguffin
Most plot devices are important because the plot requires it specifically. It does something specific that causes plot to happen
But the Macguffin is specific because...well it's not specific. It's identity doesn't matter, and if you took it out and replaced it with something completely random, then the plot doesn't change
This is why it's so often used in "I want it" plots. The point of the plot isn't to use the item, just to acquire it, which means the identity of the item is unimportant. For example, many spy thrillers have some big bad weapon that was stolen and needs recovering. As long as it isn't used, changing it out with a sock changes the stakes, but it doesn't change a single event within

    • @viperstriker4728

@@joesmutz9287 I would disagree, they only do nothing in the examples because the story doesn't follow the object for long enough. Take any treasure hunting movie and the plot device acts as a Macguffin until the very end when it opens are door or reflects some light or something.
Are we to say that it is a plot device as is but cutting the last 5 minutes of the movies and not it is a Macguffin? Seems absurd to define the object in a way that flip flops like that.
And we can't say that the Macguffin not being used doesn't effect the story. Sure the big bad bioweapon may not be fired, but because of the stages it sets the main character might choice to sacrifice his life to get it. Swapping it out would change the stakes and not maybe the main character hesitates to ask something like "is this worth it? It will only kill 10 people after all".

@@viperstriker4728 That last paragraph is the point
While it may affect character motivations and how they're perceived, what defines a macguffin is the fact that it doesn't affect the narrative directly. If the characters made the same choices, would the scenario play out the same
In the classic case of the bioweapon, replacing it with a sock would make the characters look silly if they chased it with the same alacrity, but if they were to, then no events in the story would change
Affecting the characters, and causing the plot to change indirectly is a trait of all plot devices. The macguffin is special because it doesn't affect the plot directly
How long it does what it does is irrelevant to the definition, as it is rather binary. Either it's change alters the events of the story directly, or it doesn't.

@@joesmutz9287 "replacing it with a sock would make the characters look silly if they chased it with the same alacrity" Sure the plot events don't change, but the entire tone of the series changed, which will in turn change the expectations that the audience has for the plot. It is possible to tell 2 completely different stories with all the same facts, the movie Vantage Point does this very well and literally gets you to watch the same "plot" like 5 times but never feels repetitive because of what the difference in perspective, which is much is a much smaller change then tone.
Words are given meaning simply for being useful in communicating ideas. And saying that the object is a Magoffin right until then end when it is finally used, then switching to it was never a Magoffin doesn't seem useful in anyway. Unless your saying that Magoffin isn't a description of what object is, but rather how the object is acting in that moment? That would make sense.

He already has his hands full dealing with the creative direction of the games to even try and tackle the TV show at the same time. Have mercy on him Oz.
I will say, though, that I agree with Oz that they should have tried to adapt Contact Harvest. It has everything they need to introduce the Halo universe. What the situation was before the war (where they can show humans to be a horrible species as the war against the Insurrectionist was brutal as hell on both sides (the UNSC openly exercises executions of their own men for offenses like desertion or just summary executions of insurrectionist, it was brutal)). It introduces the Covenant, what they are, how they think and what they are after, and showing that a few misunderstandings and deliberate manipulation on the part of the Prophets makes the war start.
Halo on TV or film should have never done any story that involved Master Chief or any character from the games, except as cameo characters.
Either adapt one of the many books, or make a completely original main character and show their journey as they try to survive the war.

In that scenario then sure women could be in front line combat. In real life however, direct combat roles for women is more often a liability than not.

It's hardwired in men to protect women

I'm going to correct something you've said:
In Bungie cannon, humans were never meant to be the same species as the forerunners.
During the development of Halo 2 the lead writer Joseph Staten had storyboarded at one point to have a reveal on earth where the Arbiter would find the tomb of a Forerunner, and upon opening it would reveal that it was a human skeleton, indicating that humans were forerunners.
However he later decided to scrap this idea and go with the story that was later expanded upon in the books, of human's being a separate species.
this would allow the forerunners to retain thir mystery and the alienness of thir history and architecture.
later on during the development of Halo 3 Joseph Staten took a long sabbatical in the middle of the games development, leaving much of the plot design for the game up to Marty O'Donnell and the other Bungie dev's.
Marty was of the opinion that the "humans are forerunners" idea was a good one and not fully realizing that Joseph had already written off the idea decided to add it into the game as a major plot point for the end of the game.
Both Marty and Joseph have since stated that the line is not supposed to be taken as direct cannon, Joseph saying that for the sake of lore continuity it can be understood as a metaphorical statement by Guilty Spark, saying that humans are the "forerunners" of thir age and the true inheritors of the forerunners legacy and power.
so from a official stand point, no humans aren't forerunners, but they are still massively important to the story.
Just wanted to clear that up because you keep mentioning it.

Human beings as a species actually being the literal forerunners of the Galactic civilation 100,000 years ago has a lot of problems. It causes continuity errors, and just general questions of how? Why? If humans had a galaxy spanning civilization 100,000 years ago then why isn't there archeological evidence to support this? If humans had super advanced tech in the past then why did human tech devolve to the stone-age? Humans being forerunners just doesn't jive with established knowledge on human evolution and history.

    • @Good_Emperor
      @Good_Emperor 2 роки тому

@@teamozOFFICIAL I don't know anything about this conversation inside the development team. I'm just going by what's in the games and there's nothing explicit in the games or the expanded lore that I'm aware of that explicitly states that the forerunners were biologically of the same species as humans. And regarding luminaries reading humans as forerunners: Couldn't this be explained by forerunners building their technology to be bio-identity locked so only members of a particular species would be considered valid users? Since humanity was chosen to inherit their technology said technology would then read humans as "forerunner".

According to the joke Alfred Hitchcock referenced the item in the package described initially as a MacGuffin was not a MacGuffin. Eg "What is in your od package?" "A MacGuffin." Long story describing a MacGuffin as a Tiger hunting device or creature for hunting Scottish Highland tigers. After much discussion and the proof that there are no Scottish tigers the punch line is "It mustn't be a MacGuffin then.". For this reason neither the "package" nor that contained within is the MacGuffin.

She's had multiple days and several opportunities to at least try to clean some of the blood off... Or maybe even get some new clothes at the "rebel rockpile", whilst in the care of the stylish recluse? Most women I know wouldn't go for near a week wearing bloody, dirty clothes. Just one thing about 9:10 ish.
Also a bit of a disclaimer: I’m not an expert and I’ve never used a taser, this was just some things I learnt about them while researching for some writing of my own.
“A taser that can take out a Spartan would be lethal to a human being”
Well… not really. Most tasers are high voltage (1000V) and very low amperage (1mA). Usually it is current that kills someone when it comes to electricity, so tasers are designed specifically to use low current. When the current does go through the person, though, it interferes with the nervous system with pulses that make it impossible to move them properly.
I haven’t seen the show so I’m not sure if it was a short range or a long range taser, but both work on the same principle. Of course that being said tasers don’t always work, especially if both prongs don’t make good contact. And that’s a longer range taser, I can’t imagine a short range taser would be any better since you have to get closer to the presumably 7 foot tall and ill-be heaving genetic superhuman that you’d like to subdue. Both ideas are stupid if the tool was supposed to be “anti-Spartan”.
TLDR the way tasers work wouldn’t likely kill a smaller human, even if it was made to subdue a Spartan (which I don’t think you’d have to do in the first place). Oh and using tasers on a Spartan is a dumb idea.

    51:00 About McGuffins,
I think the simplest test is ask, "Why couldn't they just X the Y?" We know so little about the briefcase in Pulp Fiction that we can't wonder how the characters might even possibly interact with it. They just want to get it and nothing else. As opposed to The One Ring, which we know the characters are capable of making choices to use it, that is, Frodo using it to get invisible and hide from Boromir, or those times that Frodo uses it and is "seen" by Sauron. We can ask questions about "Could Frodo use the One Ring to let Sauron know where he is?", for example, say Frodo knew about Pellenor Fields and wanted to distract Sauron momentarily. Or maybe we can talk about the risk-reward of Frodo using it to hide from enemies. The Pulp Fiction briefcase not only does nothing, but we also can't wonder what could have been done with it. It has no actual function within the plot other than that source of motivations that it is.
The Halo Toilet thing isn't a McGuffin because characters can choose to do things with it. Different people could try touching it.

Well about the Jackals, they weren't using Energy Swords. I think they were using Energy Daggers, which are wrist mounted (and I think they were also wrist mounted in the episode) which was introduced in Halo: Reach. They also used Energy Cutlasses in Contact Harvest that were made/powered by Blamite Crystals strictly for close-quarter skirmishes (and honestly would have suited Skirmishers from Halo Reach more, which are the nastier Female versions of Jackals). I think the episode based it off of those two things.
