Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit - Kurt Cobain - Isolated Vocals - Analysis - Recording Tutorial
When you listen to Nirvana have you ever assumed the sound was very spontaneous and they just kind of played whatever came out?
As I break down Kurt Cobain’s isolated vocal track from “Smells Like Teen Spirit”, we’ll actually explore how orchestrated the sound really was.
For those of you interested in replicating his vocal sound, I’ll show you how you can hold back your breath and use a lot of air to create that similar style.
I’ll also show an example of how you could ratchet up the track using some recording techniques in the studio.

Despite Kurt not wanting to multi-track vocals, Butch Vig influenced Kurt to multi-track his vocals by telling him, "John Lennon did it." - True Story
Thanks, Rudy! Merry Christmas! 🎅⛄🎄
Right, he told this on the Nevermind documentary. And because Kurt did double tracks Butch also told Dave to do double tracks for harmonics
You are spot on about that. The "John Lennon' vocal approach and Andy Wallace's superb, slick mixing gave Nevermind an intended huge, atmospheric sound. In Utero's one-take, raw ,bleak and bruised and bludgening production was a get-back to their roots. And I love all of that too. Two very different sounding albums. One massive, full of sound. The other more corrosive, abrasive and fragile. Both amazing.
@@kylereece1979 Check out the Heart Shaped Box isolated vocals, they're doubled too.
Yes, indeed, and after Nevermind came out, Kurt thought that it was too overproduced and didn't like it. That's way they went for a much more raw production in the next album "In utero" with Steve Albini. You could say that Butch Vig "tricked" them into making a lot of production choices that they wouldn't have made in the first place, but those choices contributed to the creation of one of the most influential records of the 90's
Kurt's singing makes us all feel like vocal experts ;)
Great analysis as always. This song is really a lot more complex that most people would asume. I highly recommend to check out also Rick Beato`s "What Makes This Song Great?" about this song.
Thanks for the visit!
Rick is fantastic! He has helped me learn more about music theory than any of my high school or college professors could.
I respect you so much. You can tell if people are high, if things are organic or practiced, fatigue in voices, little ways to cheat, history and so much more that we dont hear or know. I love your analysis videos.
G'day Ken, Kurt was definitely unique. Good job
Agreed!
This is the first time I've seen someone else notice how Kurt duplicated all the little yodels and yelps and vocal cracks so perfectly on double-tracked vocals. That's gotta take some seriously good control over what's going on in there. It's not just squeezing his throat and pushing air as hard as possible and seeing what breaks first.
With your doubling at the end it sounds so incredibly powerful. Love Kurt’s emotion, tone and pitch
Merry Christmas! 🎅⛄🎄
@@kentamplin Merry Christmas Ken! 🌲
I was born in 1990 and I am sure I have heard this song 10,000+ times and I still love this song. Always a great headbanger. I went from listening about the vocals and then you played the music part and I was headbanging like I was 13 all over again HAHA. Love the video. Kurt is one who will always be a part of my love for rock music. Saving to buy your program.
One of your best classes, congrats Ken! We need to understand more and more of how to construct and fit these layers of voices
Thank you, Sam!
Great analysis Ken! I love Kurts vocals!
Merry Christmas, Diary of Madaleine Music! 🎄🌟🎁
Ken, definitely you’re the best vocal coach, every time that I watch your videos I admire you more and more. You really do the proof showing the theory and replicating what’s behind each vocal track. Thanks a lot, I learn a lot with you.
Much appreciated, eziobonani!
Butch Vig was also VERY into getting him to do vocal tracks, as well as guitar tracks, over and over again. He was amazed at Kurts ability to do overdub tracks, so he would make him do them over and over again. He said he even thought he was lying to Kurt about the tracks, saying there were “problems” and he had to do them again. That is also how Dave got into certain tracks (In Bloom) with his overdubbed lyrics as well. He was great at keeping the same tone, as was Kurt, in doing a take over and over again.
Rock on! 😊
Okay wow❣️👏🙌 Forever grateful for your work Ken !!! You’re definitely my musical teacher! Just listening to you sing smells like teen spirit taught me everything about Kurts vocal style. And everything you spoke about him was very educational and interesting And also I will say he’s my favourite performer. And your version of his song is best I have heard. Anyways thanks so much ☺️☺️☺️ and also would be incredible and happy and grateful if you do a review on his where did you sleep last night lead belly, that’s a song everyone needs to hear!! .. That would be a treat and a half !! Anyways thank you very much and I’m gonna go continue watching more of your videos now !!
Wow, I love the breakdown of the reason for certain vocal musical decisions as regards to the character of the song! THANK YOU❣️❣️❣️
Thanks for the visit. Rock on!
Fantastic point about how orchestrated the sound actually was.. totally didn't think of that but yeah.. your absolutely right !! I legit get my music history from your vids too 👍🤙 as always, awesome job man !! ♥️
Merry Christmas! 🎄🌟🎁
Nice!!! Thanks for this ken. This song is a Masterpiece. His vocals was incredible, he had a good pitch control.

Glad you like them, Tony!
Thank you so much for this, these isolated vocals videos help me a lot, keep up the good work!
Happy to help, Soothsayer!
He was one of a kind ❤ Loved the video. Subscribed
Thanks, BERSERK!
Ken I love these
Nice analysis! Mindblown by how much preparation this song had.
Rock on!
Really informative! Thanks a lot, Ken!
Glad it was helpful, David!
I watched the making of this song , it’s exactly what you said. This was a flip the script on Hair Metal, It was very thought out. Merry Christmas!
Merry Christmas! 🎅⛄🎄
It pretty much killed the hair metal literally over night. I know a guy who had a hair band that was getting signed to a label and the next day after Nevermind was released the label killed the deal because hair bands were out and grunge was in 😱
Happy holidays
Happy holidays ken 👊👊👊 rock on. Looking forward for exciting videos in 2021 🍻🍻🍻 cheers
You and me both, Tyreke!
Wow! Another great series! Now i know another vocal fx -doubling. It makes the vocals big but not taking away the intimacy. This series demistifies the singing style of the artist. It shows that it is achievable. Thanks sir Ken!
Glad it was helpful, Joshua!
Another awesome mind-blowing shirt, Ken! 😀
Thanks, Christine!
@@kentamplin Merry Xmas Ken! Hope you a very blessed and relaxed day! And thank you so much for all that you do!!
I recently compared my voice, to a recording of myself from 1 year ago (when I was just starting your course), and I was blown away by how I've improved!! 😲😀 💖🙏
Great analysis again Ken thanks.
Thanks, Andrew! Happy New Year! 🎉🥂🍾
I said it yesterday...
I say it today...
I will say it tomorrow...
* THANK YOU KEN TAMPLIN *
My pleasure!!
I agree, although much of his vocal technique is probably unsustainable - the angst, passion and willingness to share his most inner thoughts 💭- created a legend that will truly not be forgotten 🙏👍🏼
Thanks for the visit! Rock on!
Great vid for Xmas Eve, Ken 👊🏻👍🏻 Have a great Christmas and keep up the awesome videos! 🤘🏻

Great breakdown of a studio recording sound!! A live vocal comparison would've been cool.

Great video as always Ken. Would love to see this done for Adam Gontier, especially his song I hate everything about you, it’s a very high song to song and he does it perfectly with distortion and I’d love to hear it broken down by you !!! Much love merry Christmas
Merry Christmas! 🎅⛄🎄
Great series, Ken. This was an interesting one. I could feel the vocal strain on my own vocal cords after listening.

Dude Nevermind was a very polished album everything is preplanned!!!
Merry Christmas, White Rabbit! 🎄🌟🎁
@@kentamplin thx Ken appreciate it merry Xmas to you too , try a song from bleach or Steve albini in utero mix , Kurt fought the label to have it released in the end the band used r.e.m producer to polish and remix it for the label to ok it, everyone knows nevermind is so commercially polished to be radio friendly courtesy of butch vig!!
Nice job! Always enjoy your breakdowns. And with the added vocals and doubling....
In hindsight yes..not at that time it was the heaviest shit out on the radio
@White Rabbit dude not at the time compared to the hair metal they were rebelling against WHICH WAS EXPLAINED IN THE VIDEO.
Great stuff..Hope you do one of these isolated tutorials on Axl Rose and maybe Danzig.
Hopefully!
Love this series on Isolated Vocals. I read a book about Nirvana some years ago. In it, they were talking about recording certain songs, and Kurt Cobain did not want to record with a multi track voice. But someone told him that John Lennon used it, so he agreed to use it himself. As for the title of Smells like teen spirit, there was a piece of graffiti that said Kurt smells like teen spirit. I believe this to be the case. Once again, great series, thanks Ken
Thanks Ken.
You are very welcome, VIDEOHEREBOB!
merry christmas ken!!!
Merry Christmas! 🎅⛄🎄
Very informative thank you
Thank you Daniel!
Great Video,Happy Holiday's Ken ,May The New Year Bring all Good Things To You and Your Family,You Rock 🤘🖤🎅🎄

I loved that band when I was a teen . Still a classic punk band.

@@kentamplin Merry Christmas 🎄
Oh, another vocal coach 😊
Thank you!!! When trying to sing smells like teen spirit I knew something was off and couldn’t figure out how he was doing that with his voice. I loveeee Patti smiths version almost equally now though, but that’s just me
I hope it was helpful, Veerani!
Ken I am really enjoying your series on Isolated Vocals. Please do a show on Mike Patton/Faith No More. People could really benefit from analyzing his huge 6 octave vocal range, excellent fry range, and banshee like screams. Honestly there is no one like Mike and he is super hard to replicate. I should know I have been studying him for a long time. Thanks Ken keep up the good work!
So glad you are enjoying these!
So Butch Vig, the producer said he had trouble with having Kurt do double tracks, because Kurt wanted it he be more raw. But the producer reminded Kurt that John Lennon double tracked and Kurt was a big Beatles fan. That’s what got him into music. And now that I think about it I can see a lot when it comes lyrics of “I am the Walrus” or “Come Together” inspiring “Smells Like Teen Spirit”. The approach at least. Write something that has deep meaning but really is just jargon.
Merry Christmas! 🎅⛄🎄
Love me some Kurt
Merry Christmas, DUDZZEY! 🎄🌟🎁
Wow very interesting, have just seen you in suggestion. Merry Christmas to you.
Merry Christmas, diamonds Are forever!
My girl Dawn is the cheerleader in the front row, & on the end screen right in the music video...
Cool!!
Really . I was in the clip with my brother back in 91.
I'm long shorts and white T at 1:06 just behind kurt with the hello , hello , how long part.

It's a great analysis. Years ago I had heard similar statements from a friend of mine. But of course he was just an amateur musician, you are a professional.
Thank you! Merry Christmas!
Kurt voice is nature and normal because he’s original that voice
School is in session ... Thank you Ken! Awesome instructions

hi Ken i love this series... Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays..
i thought Clark Brown sounded cool on GZR's disc "Black Science" especially track 1 "Man in a Suitcase"
Merry Christmas, batz capo!
Kurt yodels a lot in his songs especially live they definitely arnt cracks he does it a lot when he sings my girl
Merry Christmas, James! 🎄🌟🎁
I want to say I saw a Behind The Music about Nirvana and they were going over the vocals on this song and what they did with the vocals. They were doing it with the original vocal track. It was interesting to see what they did with the vocals. Then I went and watched a live performance of the song, and it was weird how different he sounded live because of what they did to his vocals for the album. This series of yous is very interesting.
Merry Christmas, Adam! 🎄🌟🎁
@@kentamplin same to you. Take care!
I was sure that it had multiple layers but wasn't sure. Thanks a lot!

Great suggestions!
I like the grunge era of the 90s, but man the 80s hair bands really rocked. Great video Ken. Merry Christmas.
Merry Christmas! 🎅⛄🎄
I saw a video of the recording engineer who recorded that album. He explain the song Drain you and said kurt didn’t want any doubling,he was against that. And he told Kurt for technical reasons he had to sing an other take.Cos the intro with only gtr and vocals needed more punch,so he doubled the vocals.I guess he convince Kurt to do doubles on other songs because its clear there is.
Thanks for filling us in, J-f Drouin!
Hey ken!! Awesome analysis my man! I'm looking forward for mike pattons one!

Awesome shirts man! Before you get away from 80s Paul Carrack of Mike and the Mechanics. Plus he did an excellent job on Pink Floyd Hey You! Re listen Silent Running ,living years, Don't she'd a tear. Awesome era to be alive. Happy Holidays from Las Vegas
Roger Smith 👍
One plus: it was really orchestrated by Butch vig, you can find it on youtube he talking about nevermind an how he convinced kurt to do teen spirit much more produced than he would like cuz "the beatles did it that way"..
Thanks for sharing that info, NameMePeter!
What is fascinating about this for me, is I'd have loved to have this information in my arsenal way back when this came out. See, I was on the metal side, and watched it destroy the genre I loved and still do (as a side note, I also enjoyed the comments in this video sharing the other point of view). Consequently, I ended up despising the music scene in the 90's. BUT, in retrospect, a few very good things happened. First, metal needed to be sent underground. I ended up seeking out bands like Blind Guardian, Iced Earth and Hammerfall which were not mainstream. Especially since Metallica abandoned their thrash roots and Guns N' Roses did hang in there the early part of the 90's before fading out. Skid Row went grunge. There were a few bands left, like Pantera, but it mostly fell out. Anyway, it was really good for metal, because it spawned it internationally and brought it to where it is now, which is in a very varied and healthy state where classic bands still roam, and newer mega bands have arrived.
Second, I ended up appreciating some of the grunge era songs many years later. I can't say I got fully into it, but there were some songs I could appreciate as I got older. Nirvana had some of them, so I can't fault now their place in history. It was earned. Same with Pearl Jam (which deserves a solo vocal track review of Yellow Ledbetter). It's funny how time going by along with a bit of maturity puts things in perspective as I try to explore all types of music instead of being stuck just in the metal genre.
Thanks for the thoughtful response. Good points. Merry Christmas! 🎅⛄🎄
You should do a sound engineering series where you play around with songs
Thanks for the suggestion, James!
Agreed- that was epic
Thankyou sir for making this video. Definitely Kurt was a good singer he had a unique voice. He was one of the best musicians in the world. So sad that we lost him. Rip Kurt ❤
Tragic. Drugs, depression and guns are a dangerous combination.
@@kentamplin I agree 👍
Great years of music.
Indeed, MDM Brussels!
Hi Ken, I like and enjoy your videos a lot. There was a band from Finland which is called Twilightning and the singer had (and still has) a great voice but he didn´t always use the best techniques to spare his voice. He still sings but more of acoustic stuff. It would be great fun if you would analyze his singing techniques of one of their songs from one of their albums "The Delirium Veil" or "Plague House Puppet Show". I still listen to them a lot. The singer is Heikki Pöyhiä. Regards from Sweden.
Thanks for the info!
Ken has an amazing gift. He could take a classic hit and has the ear talent to know just what to add in order to spice it up and make that angry song sound angrier. WOW! I Would love to hear the whole song with the added TVS, Tamplin Vocal Spices, just for kicks. It would be Awesome!! With The Range ken possesses I wonder what," TVS " Ken would add to something completely opposite Nirvana like The Beach Boys? LOL, Things I think about, SMH. lol

@@cadeevans4623 That's alright, Cade. No markdowns for spelling on my channel.
I mean I get and respect the 90s era I however never go back to it. I do see why these different and unique vocal styles took over. You can't top the perfection of the previous 2 decades so you must start over= Cobain and company.
Kurt always said, "Music comes first, lyrics second. He just cared how the music sounded more than the importance of the lyrics.
