Hi Diana... Wow, props to you for learning this song... You are right, its a challenging song for a beginner. But your approach of learning and playing it slowly is a winner... Keep up the great work Diana!
@9:45 ... "... on count four we're ... close the hats" Just checked the 1992 Reading version, and you're absolutely right. Spot on. Just downloaded your sheet music and it's good!
@@themattster Thanks Matthew. Glad to hear you got this down brother... Maybe for future lessons we can use different camera angles. Hope you are safe and well Keep up the great work!
@@rockyvsrambo82 Also I think that came out wrong. What I meant was that your angle was great, but that the other video that I watched had a weird angle.
I know most of this song already, but I came here just to see someone break down the bridge parts to make sure I had them down right. I had one thing slightly off. Thanks for the tutorial! I can also confirm that the rest of this lesson is absolutely accurate, too. Good vid all around!
As a complete beginner I learned this in a week (not up to tempo) but this tutorial is just that good and I even bought the sheet music which really helps. Now I’m going to work on getting it up to speed.
I'm now learning this song...I've been through a ton of videos...I can stop searching...this is the best teaching video without a doubt.. The only thing that I can say is that some overhead camera shots would be great.
Thanks for going over that part that shows up twice after the verses where it's a triplet sound (bonham) and the pauses. That's the trickiest part for me - sometimes Grohl plays the floor tom there and sometimes the rack tom from what I see on live footage..and he doesn't always do quarter notes on the hi hat either. Creative freedoms !
Hi Oatstao... Thanks for your insight on this... Yeah its interesting how drummers sometimes change their own parts around... Keeps it fresh! Keep rocking!!
Thanks so much for the lesson, I as well had trouble picking out the bridge part I used to always 'fill it in' when I played along. Now this helped really get the part down! Subscribed and will defs be checking out more videos. Your kit also sounds amazing btw. wow, that floor tom's tone is unreal. Cheers
lots of people in the comments coming to learn this as their first song on drums. as a drummer of 7 years, nothing wrong with doing something challenging as your first song but just remember your rudiments and don't hold yourself to one song, you may end up in a progress block
Love this tutorial. Great job. I think on the bridge there is a bass note as you are closing the hi hats after the snare lick. Also in part 3 I believe there is one inbetween the floor toms and the snare. I watched dave play it live and I think he plays the 3rd part described here with the extra bass note in the 1st section as well. Great stuff!
Honestly, as a fairly begginer self-taught drummer, I use double kick for the chorus beat, if I dont have it, I just try and follow it as closely as possible.
im learning how to play this on my electric drum pad! i just bought it so this is the first one, amd once i've saved up i can play this on real drums then
I’ve been learning this song and how you spread out the beat is great and really helpful I just get really annoyed by the that one bass drum in between the two snares in like the middle really makes me want to throw something at a wall but I’ve been getting better anyways this is really helpful awesome video
Awesome work Andy... A few tips... Okay... 1) When playing song full tempo, for now, just simplify it and play as one kick... 2) Practise the original beat with the metronome at the tempo you CAN play it... Then increase 1 to 2 bpm... The mistake alot of us make (me included) is we go from slow to fast. Using this metronome idea we can build our way to fast speed, while keeping good technique, time and groove: Also, I did make a lesson about bass drum speed and control. This will also give some useful exercises and tips... All the best Andy
I became a Nirvana fan after listening to Teen Spirit at the start of 2024, I bought a drum app on my VR Headset. learning to play this Im now going for my very first Drum lesson next week

Hi Juliette... Great to hear from you... I took a look and from what I can see, the '4 and' on the second bar has an open high hat cymbal (a little circle above the high hat) Any way, thank your for asking this question... All the best with your drumming Juliette Say Hi to your mum for us too...:)
Thx for the video! So I am playing the drums since 2,5 years now and I feel like I am quite bad, because after 2 years this song should be easy to learn for me, but it takes time, more than I thought. I've summer holidays at the moment and I'am trying to improve my drum skills. I've a drum lesson (which is 30 minutes long) every week except at holidays. So from your perspective, am I bad? The fills and stuff are pretty hard in my opinion. Greatings from Germany :D
Hi Simon... Great to hear from you... A few things... 1) Yes, you are right... This song is not that easy... Its pretty uptempo and has a fair bit going on. So I wouldn't expect that you can play it overnight... 2) Don't compare yourself to no one... Especially the 1000s of drummers on the internet... Heck if I did that, I would feel pretty inferior... I simply try and be that 1% better than I was yesterday... 3) Its Great that you have a teacher... Practise what they teach you... If you practise daily, this habit will make you into a better and better drummer!!
Last year i played drums but now i have stopped. I have an electric drum kit boxed up but i think now that i watched this tutorial im going to get back into drums. Thanks for releasing this good vid
Hi Nikki In this lesson I don't teach the form so much. However, when you listen to the song, you pick up on that stuff... This lesson is more about how to play all the parts...
Thanks a lot for this excellent video. And all your videos for that matter. You’re a star! I’m working through it. The way you brake it down into bite sized chunks makes it much easier. Ace. Subscribed! 👍🏻💪🏻🌟
I get it people want to learn this song first cause it's fast.. as humans we want to impress and I totally get that but If you're a beginner mark my words through my failings of years before there's a big difference between a dude who can play fast and just smash the drums and someone who can sustain beats the whole song on time every single note.. so as a beginner song I wouldn't recommend this at all.. to anyone.. we will rock you by queen is totally a great beginners song.. imo not this.. when you are beginner and trying to play fast like this.. trust me it's not appealing to the ears... it's all over the place... and yes Dave grohl is very much all over the place in this.. but he's on time and sustains between each note... timing is key to all instruments
Hello Medina... Glad to hear from you... Well done for your improvisation skills... Look forward to hearing about your new drumkit too one day soon too... All the best!
Medina, one thing you could do to improve while you're waiting for that kit is to get some sticks and a practice pad (or a pillow like Dave Grohl did growing up). I don't always have access to a kit, but playing out stickings on a pad improves my playing when I do get behind one. Best of luck to you, and keep rocking.
