This is day 3 and still no change in status. My Vivoactive 3 is as useful as a $10 knockoff digital watch now.
If a 3 billion dollar company can't protect themselves from ransomware, what hope is there for the rest of us?

And to complement my previous comment, I think that federal agencies are involved in that problem. Many military personnel are using Garmin devices and I am pretty sure that it’s now a major national issue. The server outage might be not solved quickly

For me it’s quite clear. For years I’ve been noticing inconsistencies in the bugs solving, features and, of course, price. Yes, Garmin is one the best sport watches companies, but it’s being having too much focus on profit and, as we see now, low investment in infrastructure and security. So, based on the low response on solving this, means that the base of all the service is soft. Now, when you buy a Garmin, you are not just buying a state of the art of a sport watch. You’re buying a watch and a service. Resuming, as I’ve been saying to Garmin from several years now, they need to be more solid, assertive and consistent in their services. I’m sorry that this happens to Garmin and I’m quite sure this will make lots of companies to rush agains the wind. I’m sorry that companies only understand what is a complete good customer service when this type of situations happen...

The main problem is the way a lot of these Garmin GPS watches are designed with you not being in the sole
procession of your data and relying on Garmin to supply you with that data. So now Garmin is down and you
are screwed. I now have GPX files on my watch I can't get on my computer because it uses ANT+ and not
USB port and software to load to the data to my computer in some way.

Your absolutely right . Supposedly Garmin have a weak network or some "loose" protocols .
For a company this big this is a very bad situation now that we are on day 3/4 and they still have problems .

Thanks for this update. As a beginner runner and Garmin watch owner, I am also curious what will happen. By the way, I bought few days ago from their webshop an accessory, it's very silent. Nothing was sent to me yet.

I'm not an IT pro by any stretch so I must be missing something. How do they not back up daily to secure servers and then restore from that and the customers be out a day's worth of data at the most? And then tighten up their security protocols? Am I oversimplifying things? I don't remember providing financial or other sensitive data when I signed up.

I dissagree with many of your suggested fixes. They are bad for usability and also might make the whole business slow, unable to move quickly, and also less secure. Your points are full of things that are correct from a purely technical aspect, but you forget again and again what complex security regimes does to users. It makes the avoid them! If you lock down the users worktools like you suggest, they would use something else. If you force loads of complex passwords on every application or on every system logon. They would write them down, or make strategies for them to remember them that voids the whole regime. I really hope, and I do belive that the era of locked down systems are coming to an end, and that security is handled smarter, and easier for the users. For this particular incident, we don't know what has happened. Probably you are right. In almost all ransomware cases I have worked with, with clients, an email and a user that was not tech savvy was the source. But that does not mean that Garmin should lock down all their systems like you say. Also, so much could have been saved here with a secure backupsystem. They should have their data securely backed up for it to be restored quickly and safely. Their systems really should have been up by now, no matter what their security hole has been.

You and I are in the same boat my friend! Except I don't run too much, more cycling. I do wear a 735XT 24/7 for tracking of heart rate and workouts. I'd love to run more, but just don't have the time right now. Do you mind if I follow you on Strava?

Excellent video. Not being an IT expert at all you brought up a lot of points regarding Garmin's current network outage I was wondering about. How can a company with all the information services they provide seemingly not have stronger security measures in place to help protect their data from this type of a breech? Especially when you consider some of the other damaging high profile ransomware attacks that have occurred in the not too distant past. As if the current length of this outage isn't bad enough for Garmin, the lack of information being released is certainly not winning them any fans.
I'm a runner as well and love my 935. Unfortunately this incident will cause me to at least research other alternatives when it's time to replace my watch. Best of luck with your running. :)

Unfortunately you'd be surprised at how poor some large companies securities are. Garmin actually to my knowledge has a very good investment into its security, but don't be fooled. It's all a matter of how it got in. You can have very strong security but if a bad actor somehow gains access as a priveleged user it's probably too late. And secondly, working for a security vendor I can confidently say - NO number of security solutions will ever make an organization 'impenetrable'. To do that, you need to be physically disconnected from other devices and networks. My 2 cents.

@@PR-fz6kl another concern I have is if this virus/ransomware is not completely remove from Garmin's system is there a possibility it could be spread via smartphone app updates?

Great commentary, for anyone interested in the topic, consider reading "Click Here to Kill Everybody

How did you export the raw data from the watch without Garmin Connect services?

    • @glock17f
      @glock17f 4 роки тому +2

I think he would have connected his watch directly to the PC with the cable, then within the watch device in explorer there is a GARMIN folder, within that folder is a sub folder called "Activity" here you would see a bunch of files with the .fit extension, each one is dated. So you would copy this file to your PC, desktop or somewhere... then within Strava I believe there is an option to "Upload".... Here might be good way to start: www.strava.com/upload/select
So in effect he did not use Garmin Connect services to get this done.. this is not possible with the current state.... Garmin still down as I write this...

@ unless you are using your phone, you should not need Android transfer. It is as simple as mounting your device in USB mass storage mode and finding the activity in the activities folder you need to upload.

I have the MK1 Descent and I primarily use it for diving. I can upload the dives to Strava but does anyone know if garmin will save the dives to the dive computer to be uploaded when the software is restored? I need the software to be able to log my dives onto the virtual dive log that garmin provides. Strava tracks my diving activity but it is nothing compared to the dive log feature on garmin connect. 😖

I got a Fenix 6X Pro last Sunday & the system went down while I was part way through setting it up. Just found a way to fix your issue though.....
Plug your watch into a PC with the Garmin supplied cable.
Once the PC recognises the watch, goto your PCs file browser and search for your Garmin watch in the list of available drives
Double click on the watch to open it and open the "Music" folder.
In another window open the folder that contains the music you want to copy
Right click & hold on the music, then drag across to the Garmin Watch "Music" folder, let go & choose copy here.
Repeat with all the music you want & wait for it to finish copying.
Voila, music is now on your watch, get out there & exercise with your favourite tunes on your watch! 👍🏃🚲⌚🎸😉
