This video absolutely revolutionized the way I approached backpacking - and so many other things. Actually, just today, I went to home depot and got some 0.7 mil plastic dropcloth for UNDER $3. No joke! Here in the year 2023!! And don’t forget - everything should have at least 2 uses or more. When I first saw this DVD i was 19 and didn’t “get” the deeper TRUTH of it. Now….some things are quite clear and this video makes more and more sense.
Being an ultralight hiker myself this video is absolutely amazing. Pure gold. Wow have the times changed. Doubled over with laughter at the size of those insane packs from the 90s. I too was once there but since have been liberated. Great video and God bless!
I’m so glad you posted this video because my VHS version is pretty old now. This is one of my all time favorite videos on backpacking. Everyone needs to see this. Now that I know it’s here, I’m going to share this with tons of people.
Lynne, great to see your video on UA-cam. Prior to hiking the AT in 2007 you were of great help getting my gear squared away. I was able to complete the trip all 2,187 miles Thanks very much! Barking Spider.
Amazing video - both informative and entertaining with the Springer Mountain interludes. In 2016, I was lugging a 5 lb. Backpack with about 45-50 lbs. on my back. I felt like a pack mule and it took the fun out of the Sierras. For the last 4 years, I have taken a 22L pack with 12 lbs. total including food and water. This year, I am taking my 12L running vest with a small Fanny pack on my PCT thru hike. I have had to make and modify so much of my gear and learn wilderness skills and overcome my fears to do this, but it is just so much more fun for me. Hope you are still hiking!
Ha I see that I am not alone in rejoicing that you put this classic and life changing presentation on youtube because I no longer have a vhs player for the video version that I bought 25 years ago at REI. Hope you are well and will create some more thought provoking material.
One thing is the ABSOLUTE necessity of a “bear canister” for food storage here in the eastern adirondacks. They add 1.75 to 4 lbs to your pack. I wish there was a work around. Any ideas?
My first UL trip was on Corse back in 2004, ray way style. I was the only one, and yes, it felt like a revolution. Now you see people who have never walked a mile in their life in 800 dollar quilts under a 500 dollar dyneema tarp in front of a 80000 dollar van. Viva la revolucion😢
I'd like to see a follow up on this video with a "Where are they now?" kind of concept where you interview all those people again and see how hiking changed their lives.
Many of them have passed on. (It’s been almost 30 years 😮.) The best reaction I ever got? A letter from an old man who was so enthusiastic after watching the video…he danced around the room. His backpacking days had been revived! I agree, “where are they now?”…fascinating concept, but oh so hard to pull off.
@@lynnewhelden Yeah, I understand. For instance, I heard that Annie and the Salesman passed away some years ago in bicycle accidents just a year apart. FYI: I bought 4 of your videos and I stll watch them to this day.

That army guy with 20lbs of food and 7 pairs of socks had me cracking up

LW, been a fan of yours since the early 90s. This is my FAV. video on the subject. It STILL RULES in 2021. "We pack our fears!"
ha ha, thanks for the compliment.
This is amazing! Great information that still holds up great today. I really got a lot out of it

love how they edited this homie to fade in / fade out during the same scene/background, but sitting in a different spot
Ha ha....the scene where I'm sort of flipping the bird at the establishment. (Man spread was deliberate, by the way.)
