Regarding being physically ready, in Ohio's Mohican State Forest, they have "Park and Pack" sites, which are all about a mile from parking spots. They're nice for your first trip, to try out new gear, etc. You can also hike farther for a longer trip, and camp at sites not near where you parked. They're all pretty nice sites, too.

Loved the video. I will recommend it to the next person that says they are thinking about trying backpacklng. I think you forgot one more type of hiker. Most of the time. I hike in somewhere around 10 miles. Never more than 15 and then camp for 3 or 4 days. Then I hike out. I'm 62 ears old and hiked a bit in my teens and twenties. I used the thought of going backpacking again to set goals that helped me lose 270 pounds. Without surgery. I worked out hard. Eat good food. Drank a lot of water. I have been backpacking for 2 years now and loving it. The only bad thing is that i did have a heart attack and even though I am very healthy for my age. My heart attack and hip replacements and knee surgery have taken a toll. It also does not help that I live in Utah. ALL my trails have ELEVATION. I hike slow when going up, but I am usually alone so I hike my own hike. Anyway, enough rambling. Keep up the great work.

One style of weekend trip is base camping- hike in, set up camp for a couple of nights, day hike during the day, but camping back in the same spot, then hiking out the last day. This can be a nice way to explore longer on that second day without having to haul all your gear with you, and it's one less time you have to break down and then set up your camp. You can also enjoy your time in camp a bit more this way!

DO NOT ADD VEGETABLE OIL TO YOUR MEALS. Add olive oil instead.

Avocado oil is a good choice too, especially if you're dual purposing your oil to cook with. It has a higher smoke point than olive oil.

Very helpful! I am 62 years old with some health issues. I plan to start backpacking again after years of working and sitting on my butt, so your video is very helpful in getting me up to snuff on the gear available these days and what I need to do to prepare myself physically for my goal here. I really love nature and I want to enjoy my senior years soaking it up again. Thanks!

Hi Jeremiah. Thanks so much for your videos and the podcast. They are so informative and truly hilarious. I’m 6’ and my husband is 6’4” and it’s very hard to find backpacking info that is helpful for us tall xl people!! I understand you are really tall too. I hope that for all your great videos you’ll start to add some extra somethings that may help us tall folks out. It’s taken me months to get the research on some of the basics just getting started for our gear. I find discovering right sized technical clothes especially challenging. It’s particularly interesting what shoes you wear bc hubby is also 14. Thx for any nuggets!

Bro- you killed this video/contnet. I think the only thing I wanted to see for new backpacker to know is the differnce between all the different styles of backpacking, like your general outdoor fun/scenery, ultralight, FKT's, and talk about the differnces in gear for those styles, becasue I feel like there is this minomer for beginners that you have to go fast and light and spend all this money- when backpacking as a leisure activity exsisted way before the current UL/FKT trend. But also let them know some of the benefits of going lighter and faster, like less stress on your body, and you can move quickly through the boring parts of a trial to psend more time in the cool spots. I just feel like no one talks about those things in a big picture way-

...Excellent video Jeremiah .... Seems like you covered it all ...... .. Was that 02:14 a Helinox Poop Chair ?? ........... What make Orange Flipper Knife at 06:38 ?? ... With water filtering ,, will not want to add electrolytes with every fill ... As the commercials showed back in the day when I started backpacking ,, use what the Astronauts use ... Tang ... to flavor the water .... also after iodine drops ... ... Only thing next is to get someone else to carry your gear ,, like a Sherpa or a Llama .........

The permits aren’t primarily for support of public lands, they are primarily a user fee that reduces the taxes on the wealthiest-those who profit the most off the exploitation of public lands.
It’s soft-privatization of public land. There are plenty of wealthy interests in U.S. that would like to convert all public land to private. User fees are a first step in that direction.
