@@lunarnocturnenot only just crazier but further from what core fans want bc SR2 was hella crazy but it was grounded. You had to CHOOSE to play it crazy.
@@WideOldDan exactly,it’s one of those situations where they should’ve retconned 4 and GoH cause you won’t ever have the same essence as you would with the original series with already established lore. That’s why a Remaster of One and Two combined into one game could’ve saved them outright
They were pushing Loren HARD in all the advertising I'd seen. I was expecting him to be an extremely cunning crime boss, hitting the Saints when they'd least expect it. As for Killbane, I wish his storyline wasn't so rushed because his charisma stole the show in every scene he was in. Would've made for an excellent storyline leading up to Loren.
For me,I personally feel like the Dewynter Sisters suffered the most in terms of potential as the Sole Inheritors of Lorens Empire. As for Killbane he could've worked in a Vein similar to Maero from SR2,a Massive Pyshical Presence and a character to have a legitimate 1v1 rivalry with as the Boss. You could remove Angel De LA Muerta and have the animosity towards killbane come from him attacking Johnny's Funeral Procession and the Increasingly Dishonorable ways he fights compared to how he presents himself on TV as a neighborhood Entrepreneur and a hero of the People.
I still remember getting Saints Row The Third as a teenager and being shocked at how drastically they changed from the street gangs versus corrupt police storyline from the first 2 games I remember a lot of people hated the tonal change with a passion it was a joke
@LunarNocturne exactly the same thing happened with the Destroy all Humans games with the first two games being developed by pandemic and being about two men called Crypto and Pox versus the corrupt militaries of the 50s and 60s and having a serious tone while the later games went as gross out as possible especially path of the furon which was infamous for killing the franchise
@@ChrisSealy1997 I think I remember you bringing that up in a previous thread. Crazy to see all the parallels between SR3 and Destroy All Humans with them having quite polarizing entries.
The Saints weren't robbing the bank for money. They were doing it so Josh could get experience as a method actor. He's the one starring in their movie after all
Hot take: the Adult Swim radio station should have included more tracks from MF Doom. He produced so many of their shows during that channels' heyday, it's the least they could have done to give him some publicity.
Thankfully Volition's sound team featured Doom in SR1 when he was doing songs for the Madvillain duo. The devs have great taste. I also feel like there should've been more songs on the Adult Swim station because the selection was pretty low.
It’s actually annoying me that you only have 1k followers….. I’ve watched all your saints row retrospectives and they are fantastic! I’m only a new fan of Saints row. Only starting to play the third one the other day….. I’ve loved it so much that I’ve been thinking of going back, and after watching your videos, you have convinced me to get them!! Keep up the great work brother! You have just gotten a well earned follow☺️
I agree my favorite part of the game is when you are diving into the roof of that one building with Kanye West - Power playing. It’s such a good scene/event
That scene had me feeling myself the first time I played it. I felt like I was on top of the world, like nothing could stop me. Such an insane rush. Wish I could've left Power in this retrospective, but that's such a huge copyright risk.
@collencal4662 Choosing the background music from all the games I've played in the past is one of the most yet frustrating parts of making these vids. Thank you so much!
I hope to see you do your own retrospective on the Mass Effect trilogy one day, but anyway, I love your Saint Row Retrospective series. It is engaging with your own take on the story and also gives information on the department of the game which gives insight into volition.
I've been trying to pull together a script for the Mass Effect trilogy for YEARS, and I think after I finish Saint's Row and continue working on Persona 3, I'll do some rewrites on my Mass Effect script. I have a lot of love for that series. It got me back into reading about space and physics as a teenager and made me more passionate about the subject.
I feel like SR3 never matched that Tone of the 2011 CGI Reveal Trailer. The feeling of Decadence,Glory, being at the top floor of a private penthouse as your a Borderline Celebrity in terms of how much power you and the Gang wield. Juxtaposed by the Ruthless and Brutal efficiency and Escalation of the Rivals hungry to take you down and even the overwhelming power of the government now having an eye on your organization now. Saints row 2 has been my favorite in the series for years and the clear reason for me above all else is just how much Better SR2's Stilwater is as a Map compared to SR3's Steelport. The variety and distinct differences between the Neighborhoods of SR2 truly made this map stand out for me as one of the most underrated Open World Maps of all time. Also, the amount of Building interiors to go into compared to Steelport which has legitimately so many dead zones with nothing going on with the civilians or nothing to do as a player besides causing destruction. The second biggest Issue i have is the Plot. The Syndicate and the 3 separate gangs between them feel so wasted and indistinguishable because theyre all connected. Loren getting killed and it leading to a power struggle is an interesting idea but its immediately just replaced by Killbane and the Luchadores and completely wasting the potential of the Dewynter Sisters. And the amount of Excess characters among the saints like Josh Burke/Oleg/Zimos/Viola Dewynter are just too much and take away too much focus from the story with the only saving grace of new Characters being Kinzie Kenzington.
God, rewatching the CGI trailer brought me back to when I first saw it in the 5th grade. I had high hopes for this game back when that trailer dropped. How could you not? It was unapologetically stylish and gave you that feeling of being both a celebrity and a gangster. The map of Saints Row 2 remains undefeated. Each neighborhood had its own identity and you could tell where you were at without having to pull up the map menu! Steelport had so much potential to be a cool open world. Imagine all the rustic, yet neon-lit neighborhoods they could've brought to life while giving them their own sense of identity. The death of Loren leading to power struggle between the remaining members of the Syndicate was such a hugely wasted opportunity! It was right there! And the only things that came out of it was the death of one of the sisters, and Matt skipping town. The amount of throwaway characters added was also a complete waste. It felt like they only existed just to remind the player about certain activities, and to offer exposition on why they hate a certain gang. They barely feel fleshed out.
@@lunarnocturne I'm currently doing a playthrough of SR4 Re elected and if you ever do a Retrospective on that game I'd love to see it. I think SR4 is better than SR3 in alot of ways and makes better use of old characters like Matt Miller and Kinzie Kenzington and new Characters like Keith David and Asha Odekar doing much better than characters like Oleg/Josh Burke and Zimos.
Exactly! They basically played us with the cinematic trailer 🤦🏾♂️😂😂😂 we got Bamboozled! Wow and look how dum Pierce look on this his zesty will smith 2007 outfit
Thank you for this video, watched it once all the way through, gonna now play it again from the beginning while I sleep as well to have it injected in my subconscious proper. Put the SR1 video in the queue and looking forward to enjoying it when I wake up.
Yo, thanks! I'm really glad that my vids are getting other people to go back and rediscover these games! Feel free to put me on in the background when you're playing SR1
@@lunarnocturne Not necessarily rediscover, these games never left my mind. In fact I'd say they're stuck there since I'm doing a 100% achievement completion of the games on Steam for the second time around. I'm done with SR3, SRIV and SR:GooH, I just have beaten SRIV in co-op left as well as SR3R
I remembered when I was young I read up on the wiki for choices existing, at least when reading Carlos' page(when getting quite into SR2 after being reintroduced to Saints Row through 3), they did say that they regretted the lack of saving Carlos as an option after his mercy killing. Would've been pretty meaningful, since only the final choice makes a meaningful change to the story respectively. Everything else is just more money or more respect... money, or discounts. At least the first choice makes it so that Loren's tower can be snapped out of existence and changes the map even for a tiny bit. Side note, it's ironic that the tallest building in the map(according to the wiki) is something that I might pass by multiple times without noticing it. Edit: Oh yeah also unmasking Killbane option I forgot. Not much difference too, just a cosmetic change if you do the bad ending where he'll be either masked or unmasked during the confrontation. Melee gloves though, but outside of finding the weapon in TF2 first before the game the weapon came from, is kind of funny. And yeah it's more satisfying to unmask him, at least story-wise. Also throughout the Steelport adventures, gonna have to wonder what's even happening back at Stilwater when the leader of the Saints is pretty much living at another island at this point, and they're left to their own devices
I feel like they handled Carlos the way they did because they probably couldn't think of other ways to fit him into the plot. Really sucks, because he's got so much potential. The choices that SR3 gives you are laughable, and I can't help but feel like it was influenced by Mass Effect and other games where choice is involved- both of which were popular at the time. I'm also still salty at not being able to inhabit Loren's tower. Regarding your side note: If Steelport weren't so bland, we probably would've noticed that we were passing by Loren's tower. As for Stilwater, I do wish there was some sort of linear DLC/expansion to go back there, but then you'd need a reason TO come back there.
while the remaster has its issues, the weird not getting into cars thing isn't new to SR3. it is in the original just happens WAAAAAY less than the remaster
I couldn't wrap my head around the fact that saints row 3 shouldn't be taken seriously because the side stuff were fun but man the story something else, if they wanted end johnny they could've at least given him a badass send off instead of having it go off screen.
THQ's interference and forcing the writers to film the scene in an awkward manner really wasn't helping things. If you're gonna kill off a beloved character, you're pretty much obligated to give them a proper or hell, even badass send-off.
you make good points on the *bad* ending and i understand them all but when i played this game at release this was the ending i took simply because i did not have a connection to either Shaundi or Viola firstly they changed Shaundi completely from who she was in SR2 so i just didnt like her and i only just met Viola so not connection to either i wanted to kill Eddie more
Yeah I could understand taking that ending if you had no connection to them. Me personally, everyone felt like a ride-or-die to me thanks to all the headcanons I made for them in my head (this was before I got to seriously sit down and play SR2)
I honestly love ending talk some prefer the bad ending saying it’s a return to form of the gang while others take the videos view were it’s ride or die
The bad ending was clearly supposed to be the canon ending. The boss literally says "we're done being corporate wh*res" in the 3-Way cutscene. Why would the boss suddenly change their mind to do Gangstas In Space after they save Shaundi? Another point is that the game outright doesn't end when you decide to save Shaundi. Also, I really don't understand the hate for SR3 Shaundi. SR3 Shaundi might have an attitude problem (probably got that from the boss) but she isn't a pushover like she was in 2. She went from a pothead hippie to a hardened criminal. It's called character development.
@@theobell2002 that is one way to see the change in Shaundi. But I think the hate comes from the fact that we loved the SR2 version of her so much that she didn't need to change just like Gat if you look at him through out all the games his look updated but his attitude who he was didn't change because who he was that is what the fans loved so it would have been good to see the same with Shaundi. also on a side note that is why i hated them killing Gat off
Trust me, that stumped me as well when I was writing and watching playthroughs. The reason why certain dialogue is written differently is because it depends on the voice you gave your character. This can range from stuff like unimportant sentences in dialogue to entire conversations.
@@lunarnocturne I finished Gat out of Hell a few weeks ago. I would say personally I think it's a hidden gem, clearly and painfully unfinished, but the abilities are so fun. You could easily take it and make a Justice League game. The biggest downside is no radio, though you can hear it when the demons drive cars. On PC there is a mod to add that radio in for the player and it works just like SR4. I don't think I would've enjoyed the game as much if I didn't have it
Great video although I hope you change the barrier in that fire alarm as I heard it going off a lot in the background when I first heard it. I thought it was mine.
SRTT definitely did things I didnt appreciate and the way its praised by game journalists just for being over the top had Volition later just double down and they intentionally dismissed and alienated fan opinion over journalist opinon if fans didnt like or agree with it; to follow the games after it. SRTT definitely is divisive for what it lead to. I do like the new characters though. Most people agree on at least that.
I think you might have misread the title. "The Divisive One" I also made and agreed with a lot of the points you made. Hell, I didn't even feel like bringing up the Dildo Bat lmao
I don't think journalists were responsible for that. I think a majority of the gaming community felt that way about SR3. It was their best selling game after all and it's something I keep hearing from people who didn't really care about 1 and 2. They always say shit like: "Haha over the top whackiness?! THAT'S ALWAYS BEEN SAINTS ROW!"
Saints row 1-2 WHERE over the top, have you even played the games or are you basing your opinions off random people you saw the internet?@@theobell2002
My gripe with this remaster is that the Boss looks like made of plastic just like the original the third but now its more apparent since everybody got like hyper realistic faces and shit and your character stands out like a fucking caricature. Wish they gave a facelift to the player model too. He looks like a cat, big eyes and shiny while everybody has somewhat normal proportions.
That's been my issue with 8th/9th generation remasters of games from the 7th gen: The dev team behind them always has to go with semi or hyper realism for models or objects, and then tries to make the players think the game looks "modern" by lathering the lighting with an offensive amount of lens flare.
It might just be me but on the Kidnap Josh Mission. It always felt like damage YOU do is reduced not matter how many upgrades I have and Damage THEY do is increased! Making that Mission really difficult!
Don't know if there is a connection, but murderbrawl 31 shares the simulation number in saints row 4 "simulation 31" just thought it was neat to point out.
Watched all the three Saints Row retrospectives almost back to back. I like the editing in most places and the only 'low points' would be where the footage repeats a little especially in this one. That is not really your fault given that this game has very little on offer for some characters. Loved going through these games again with a different perspective. I don't think that the 'larger than life' and overly wacky direction of this game was a bad thing. It just wasn't written well. I don't mean that they didn't introduce it organically but that the story threads don't really tie in well enough to make sense. It seems that much of it was because of THQ meddling in something they didn't have a good hold of. Great work on all three. Maybe you could take a look at GTAs with your style of retrospective, if that is your speed. I know that there are many other such retrospectives on GTA but it can't hurt to have someone who has played Saints Row as much as you have to take a look at some of the older GTAs like Vice City and San Andreas.
I see saints row 3, 4 and gat out of hell, agents of mayhem and SAINTS ROW as if they were the films I’m waiting for one where it takes place after 2 leading up to them being film stars
A 3 hour video and here I am tryna justify the RC Possessor. You ready? The Possessor, in my eyes, is the most useful special weapon in the game. Yiu can take over a tank, aircraft or just regular car to crash into your enemies and blow them up from a safe distance. Need a quick getaway during a gunfight? Take control of a vehicle or most likely a helicopter, land it and gtfo. Wanna have fun? Stand on the Saints HQ helipad. Get a 5 star wanted level, let the heli's come in. Take them over and land them at opposite buildings. That is fun to me ofcourse. In the Stag Film mission, the gun is useful and funny at the same time. Take control of aircraft or a tank to blow up STAG enemies. If you're stuck, get a Condor, land it somewhere, get in and get back on the Deadalus. Or take over a tank or Condor, crash into the streets and act as a Stag unit destroying the city. The RC Possessor is so much fun It is also a key part in unlocking the Tron suit. Yk. The one from Deckers.Die
2:49:40 In the bad ending section i noticed you brought up screwing over Burt Reynolds by claiming Steelport. But the thing is he's dead in that ending because he was also captured with Shaundi and Viola on the monument. The game just never says that though.
I actually picked up on Burt dying after filming had concluded. You don't know how much I was kicking myself in the ass for not knowing that Burt was up there.
Accidentally unlocked all the damage upgrades before I finished the deckers storyline, so I was immune to pretty much all damage(except mele) for the last third of the story. It was fun being invincible at first, but it got kinda boring playing through all those missions while invincible. The challenge was gone, and I was pretty much just there for the cutscenes. It's a shame because the game doesn't allow you to turn off the upgrades, leaving me stuck like that unless I started new save which wasn't ideal for someone who already completed so much of the map takeover. After that, the zombie mission was the only one that actually challenged me, since the enemies there targeted my only weakness.
At first, it's fun being able to steamroll enemies without much getting in your way, but after some time, it starts to get boring and makes you wanna switch to another game completely. That's why I don't like that the game doesn't allow you to switch off certain upgrades; once they're on, they're set in stone.
Have you ever had SR 3 Remastered on PS4 crash on you? Every time after beat SR 3 R and SR 4 for Ps4 I look for collectables and do all the activities and challenges. But after about 3-4 weeks after beating the game SR 3 R and SR 4 crash! my Ps4 is in fine condition! Is it 3 and 4 are buggy to begin with?
SR3 Remastered was REALLY glitchy for me. My character would interrupt the animation for entering vehicles. There's also the stick drift as I mentioned in the video too. I'll make sure to be on the lookout for that as I platinum this game. As for the SR4 port, I haven't encountered any issues.
To be fair the first saints row i played was one and Gat was the sickest mf too i damn near looked up to him than i played saints row 2 and he loses his fiance who had a her character arc in saints row one btw and too be honest when i played 3 sho had me feeling all type of emotions i stilled loved the game so technically the folks that either one grew up off the franchise or simply played the games before 3 and messed With Gat then they would probably agree
Saints Row The Third could've been another major draw if only THQ hadn't interfered & killed off the legendary Johnny Gat, they also could've added another DLC of The Boss & retired Police Chief Troy Bradshaw joining together to finally take down Dex once and for all.
Publisher interference is always a bitch. What also sucks is that SR3 had another chance to come correct with good DLC and it wasn't good (except for Genki Bowl, of course. More score attack is good enough for me).
You know, after looking at the female gang members, I always wondered where they would store their guns and ammo, considering the fact that most of them wear skimpy clothing I guess you could say that the Ronin girl just hides her gun and ammo in her jacket, even then it's a small looking jacket And where does the Morningstar girls store their weapons and ammo? Uhhhhh
The female gang members of the first two titles- you could say they kept their piece concealed. The ladies of the Morningstar... yeah. I don't even know how they conceal weapons. Also, Boss was naked during the Safeword shootout. Does that mean that he kept ammo... Boss, no!
i kinda wonder if the game creators read The Invisibles by Grant Morrison, especially with Saints Row IV's style. But then again that could just be The Matrix's influence, since the Wachowskis blatantly ripped off The Invisibles.
@jessebaumann7080 Lmao I was shotgunning that recording too. Wanted to get it finished quick as possible thanks to the smoke detector. Thankfully we changed the battery by the time the next chapter rolled around
Saints Row The Third was my introduction to the Saints Row series back in Christmas 2011 on the PS3, it was a fun time. But then a year later in Summer 2012, I played Saints Row 2, and was blown away how much better and far superior it was compared to Saints Row The Third. Now I see Saints Row The Third was the true start of the downfall of the series, and I noticed how much of a downgrade it was compared to Saints Row 2 when I played them back to back. The things you could do in Saints Row 2, the better story, and better map-setting made it all the better experience. I also did play the original Saints Row from 2006 on my uncle's xbox 360 slim back in 2012-2013, and it was so much fun too. Everytime I went back to start up Saints Row The Third I was disappointed, and underwhelmed, and just wanted to go back to Saints Row 2 or the first one. Even to this day, I feel the same way. Saints Row IV on the other hand I never played, but from what I can tell was a total new low in terms of the story.
Ha, looks like I'm not the only one who played the series backwards as well! Speaking as someone who jumped in when SR3 released, I found myself preferring SR1 and 2 over 3. Those games have the better overall gameplay and map design in my opinion.
I always preferred Saints Row 1 and 2 over Saints Row The Third even back then, I knew how much better I preferred the first two were compared to the third. When I was 12-13 years old, I noticed the downgrade, and how empty, boring and lifeless the third's Steelport felt compared to Stilwater. Although I must say I like the design of Steelport, but it has so much wasted potential, from the lack of enterable buildings, so on. The lack of options to customize your crib was also a major disappointment when I realized that it was completely removed. Saints Row The Third was not all bad however, it is fun, had interesting new characters, but the decision to kill off Johnny Gat in a quick apathetic way, was a stupid move on behalf of THQ, and is really what screwed up the game storywise. Saints Row IV hit the final nail in the coffin, going ridiculous with all the sci-fi alien BS and destruction of Earth. Not to mention Saints Row IV's story was based on Saints Row The Third: Enter The Dominatrix DLC, and it was not originally meant to be canon in the actual story.
Upon starting up SR2 in mid-2012, I was blown away by how much detail there was in Stilwater, compared to Steelport. Both islands and each neighborhood of Stilwater represented something seen in a lot of major American cities, while still leaving room for its own identity. Steelport's idea of being based off of Pittsburgh is really awesome, but it kills me that they never went further with adding more detail and life to the city. It feels like they threw together the city in a couple hours, which is why none of the districts are memorable.
Apologies for the essay I've wrote, but I got a lot to yap about: XD I remember playing The Third. Had my fun and I honestly enjoyed STAG, (their theme slaps) and I'm a sucker for futuristic vibes in contemporary times... that said it all is too much combined with everything else. People not liking it isn't unwarranted; The futuristic stuff, the goofy wackiness, the zombies, GAT'S DEATH. It was just too much in too short a time in a series that didn't really need it. What's sad is the whole tonal change can be partially blamed on chasing trends, something that's become worse recent years. Another "third" game that faced similar issues is Fallout 3. Before 3, the series was about the world after the bombs fell as new societies rose from the ashes creating their own identities and inevitably created conflict with one another, now it's copy paste with no real in-world innovation filled with wacky and weird scenarios. It's affected stuff I like too with Ubisoft's recent handling of the Tom Clancy games in particular (I was never into Assassin's Creed), Ghost Recon Wildlands actually has interactions between NPCs sporadically generated across your paths, (Sicarios playing with kids or being arrested by UNIDAD) but there's plenty to criticize it for including a tonal shift, particularly it has the same problem with futuristic gear but in reverse. Ghost Recon had an element of experimental, new tech up until Future Soldier which influenced my love of future vibes. Now there's barely any of that aside from cosmetics which don't do jack, something made even worse with two DLCs and the sequel Breakpoint taking place on a techno utopia filled with combat drones you have to fight. A year after Future Soldier... And then there's Rainbow 6. Before Siege, Rainbow was an elite counter-terror unit composed of operators from all over NATO, and later the world with the gameplay focusing on a tactical approach. Come Siege, after the White Masks and the end of the Extraction event (zombies again,) Rainbow would be turned on its head into PvP hero slop with all the operators living in a sports arena (instead of Hereford in the UK) and and be open to the public... yes this is the actual reason for the game modes and events, Rainbow is now a crew of glorified airsoft players. (And both GR and R6 now have their operatives running around like generic Special Forces or diet CoD characters) All in all, I perfectly understand the Saint's Row fans because a lot of us are in the same pool. On a lighter note, Pierce wasn't wrong about going too far with the sinking of the Aircraft Carrier as it's a US asset, and if you know anything about the US, it's that you DON'T TOUCH THE BOATS!
@@lunarnocturne i wonder why shaundi, a grill with over 500 bodies (i dont mean kills neither) gives a damn about gat in this game. Wheres the goddamn story bros. 2009 saint here. Rip idolninja
Yep! Played the series in reverse throughout 2011-2013. Saints Row 1 felt genuine and grounded. Saints Row 2 felt like an improvement and had more to do. Saints Row 3... a lot was stripped away with this game and still leaves so much to be desired.
While this is my first Saints Row game, since PC port was crap for second game, i really liked it. After few years, i replayed first two games, and liked them too, especially first game, which became my favorite for how simple and straight to the point it is. No hate for fourth game, but it just aint my cup of tea, so replaying it isnt in my schedule soon. Edit: i really enjoyed listening to this video, so cheers!
I also played this series backwards! Started with SR3 in 2011 (although I messed around in the open-world in SR2 a couple years back), played SR2 seriously in 2012, and then got my hands on a copy of SR1 that same year. Saints Row 1 is my favorite in the franchise mainly because of how grounded it feels in terms of atmosphere. The gameplay is also some of my favorite (although the addition of checkpoints would be nice). Glad you enjoyed this video, man!
I just hope the people from Volition had a better time working with Burt Reynolds then Rockstar had working with him for GTA Vice City when he voiced Avery Carrington. There's a famous quote that Burt Reynolds told I believe one of the Housers I can't remember which one so I'm not going to say but he was annoyed with them and he said there's going to be two hits me hitting you and you hitting the floor and he also cussed them out over something about clothes (I think a sweater) and at one point they asked him to resay a couple lines and he refused to do it without a, "attaboy" which I would assume means extra pay and the experience Rockstar had working with him overall was described to be absolutely miserable and tension filled.
@@lunarnocturne believe it or not the Saints originally were going to be green. The grove street families were supposed to be orange, I’m pretty sure they still use a loading screen with cj in the orange outfit.
I dunno how they took a unique setting like that and made it boring lmao. They had so much potential for a sandbox Pittsburgh jam-packed with stuff to do, and barely did anything with it.
Sadly it seems like the source code for SR1 may be lost. The source code SR2 on the other hand, was found on a server belonging to a dev or publisher related to Volition. So depending on how Deep Silver is feeling, we might get an SR2 remaster.
@@lunarnocturne that’s a bummer 🫠 I guess the only viable option is taking SR2 and morphing it into a combination of The first 2 installments as a reboot I mean if they used the source code and original base models that were for saints row 3 for Saints row 4 like I never noticed this until your retrospectives (great shit btw) but they used the Daedalus or wtv that stag last mission ship is pretty much the damn one use the whole game in part 4 !! So they can use that SR2 source code to build an entire new game with next gen deep silver and volition should be charged with crimes against humanity
@@ruffryder1208 As it stands, the smartest option in the world for Deep Silver would be to hand the license over to a (hopefully) competent developer and let them handle the remaster. However, business is business, and publishers will only put together remasters if it's financially viable. Still, a Saint's Row 2 remaster would be a great way to revamp love for the open-world gangster subgenre in this console generation.
@@ruffryder1208 A Saint's Row 1 remake with the love and care done on the same level as RE4 Remake would be amazing. I'd love to see how they handle stuff like gunplay and the general gameplay loop.

I think most can agree that 3 does have the better gameplay, the better combat/gun play and player movement than 2 but sadly 3 also has such a bland, forgetable location and the story feels rushed, unfinished and often at times has nonsensical plot and character issues (Like Phillipe Loren seemingly being built up to be the main big bad of the game only to die a few missions in, Shaundi coming across as a totally different person Monica Hughes also being built up to be a villan and yet nothing really happens with her and neither you/the boss or Pierce even caring about Gat's death??)and so there is no doubt in my mind that 2 has the much better story, characters and location. Of course if you know about the development of 3 you will know that hardly anyone that worked on 1 and 2 worked on 3, and 3 went through countless script and story changes and had about half the budget that had been requested and with the devs apparently being confused throughout most of the games development thanks to the high ups in the company saying they did not want the game to be too dark or serious which I think rather did screw the game over more so when it came to Gat's death as they clearly wanted it to be a serious momment yet "Sorry our game can't be too dark or serious.." Sadly while it will never happen for obvious reason I'm still somewhat sad we never got a saints row 2 remaster or remake. Can you imagine how good Saints Row 2 would be with modern graphics and 3's combat and movement?
Yep, I actually went over a lot of that in the vid. I do think SR3 finally nailed the shooting aspect, allowing the player to enter and exit free aim more easily. I also regret not bringing up the staff changes that happened during the development segment
I remember when Saints Row was rivalling GTA, particularly between GTA 4 and saints row 2, It was a shame that they backed down and decided to go with outlandish story's such as saints the thrid and saint's row 4, even Saints Row 2022 stuck with that type of crazy storyline. I wish they did a game that went back to Saints Row 1/saints Row 2. It's a shame that we'll never see it. Saints Row was the only open-world crime game that stood toe to toe with Rockstars GTA. I also agree with your take about Johnny Gat, the fact that Shandi was the only one who seemed to feel affected and showed emotion, i get the boss is hardened and wouldn't show that level of emotion, even pierce to a certain agree but you would think they'd have a funeral sequence or speech before they attack the syndicate tower about how "we'll make them pay for Johnny", or even a sequence where the boss says that at least johnny is with Aisha now. Anyway, i love the video and I'm going to watch your other saints row retrospectives. Great work dude!
The release of Saint's Row 2 meant that Volition had every chance in the world to capitalize on its success with a kickass sequel. They had NO reason in the world to willingly fuck it up, but of course they decided to anyways. You had no idea how hyped I was when I heard that there when the SReboot trailer got announced. Watched it on break during my 8-hour shift at work and was heartbroken. Everyone was expecting a return to form from the long-dormant franchise, in a console generation where there aren't many GTA clones left. Shaundi and Gat's off-screen relationship was very bizarre. They'd only interacted on maybe 2 occasions and that was it. Everyone else's lack of concern over Gat's death was also comedically out of character lmao. I also wish the funeral attack happened when Johnny was getting buried, as a way to pay homage to the Ronin's attack on Aisha's funeral. Hope you enjoy the other retrospectives too! Got more on the way!
@lunarnocturne i agree, I remember when I saw the announcement trailer pop up on my phone and immediately jumped in anticipation, but after watching the trailer I felt deflated, as it felt volition were trying to capitalize on the Fortnite craze, particularly in the art style of the game and even the combat to a certain degree; just more janky than Fortnite. And volition terrible responses to fans feedback left a sour taste and further cemented that we'll never see a true comeback to saints row which is heartbreaking since i grew up playing the first four games (including gat out of hell) and love this franchise to bits. Anyway, I'm looking forward to seeing your retrospective on saints row four, that'll be a masterpiece seeing you articulate into words the bat shit crazy story in that game lol.
Saints row 3 is a dumb mess of fun...and well made not like other modern games...its a masterpiece and the perfect balance between immersion and braindead fun
I plan on covering Saint's Row IV. It's gonna be a double feature, though, with the full-length retrospective showing both SRIV and Gat Out of Hell. I'm currently working on covering Digital Devil Saga at the moment though.
….This Contains Spoilers…… Huge plot twist that in the opening prologue of SR4 that Miller was an deep cover operator with MI5 or CIA according to Asha Odekar by explaining it to Shaundi and fun Shaundi returns in an throwback mission with Neil Patrick Harris reprising his role as Veteran Child and in the Dlc the saints that saved Christmas there’s an future Shaundi. Finally It turns out that Gat survived by being abducted by Zynyak so SR3 setted up the events of SR4 and enter the dominatrix was going to be DLC and Powers for SR3 later got cut and ended up in SR4 according to leaked sources at the time .
For the record; I'm the idiot that takes UNARMED as my preferred combat option in any game that will let me. Never particularly enjoyed the unarmed combat in either 3 or 4. Even with all the upgrade crap they give you - it unlocks by level restrictions (which are harder to get when you play unarmed only) and the special move stuff was not that easy to pull off. You can get the hang of it, but you also shouldn't have to "get the hang of it." I'd have preferred just straight X,Y,B options for light but fast, medium and then the heavy hit that's slower. The throwing is a bit more fun and in 4 the unarmed was a bit more fun... but you were also fighting tougher enemies to start with. So most of the time I was just plain Swiss Cheese. (Also wasn't a fan of the QTE brutes in 4, or the brutes from each faction in 3. The hammers are fun when YOU can use them... but the knock around is really bloody annoying to get hit with)
Melee in this game was sooo frustrating and unenjoyable. Real step down from SR2. I also kind of wish they threw in a meter that would allow you to unleash one of those special moves on dudes after you've filled it via melee attacks.
That's why I think re-tooling the Respect system and taking emphasis away from side activities hurt the length of SR3. Call the side missions padding all you want, but it gave you something to do away from the story and kept players from burning through the story in less than a day.
Smoke detector. Beeps when the battery is out. The most annoying noise in the world if you record stuff like I do. If you don't, it just becomes background noise.
The "Saints" game core changed due to people kept calling it a "GTA Clone"....that made Volition to stirr away from the seriousness & go with parady over the top comedy.... "Steelport" depend on who you ask was modeled after a few cities. Some say Steelport supposed to be a fictional New York . Some say "Pittsburgh"....Other say "Detroit" & even "Gary Indiana". "Stillwater" was been "Chicago". "Santo Illeso" takes place in "Las Vegas" & ",Reno". 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔
It kills me that Volition and their publisher didn't wanna expand upon what the first two games had built. Saints Row 1 was a sandbox game that set itself apart from the rest by giving the player more side stuff to do and more flexibility during combat. Saints Row 2 corrected all the gameplay hiccups from the previous title and became a stellar game as a result. Saints Row 3 took all of that and made the world more empty, gave players less options for customization, and gave us an inferior story and characters. They literally had so many chances to not fumble. I'd say that Steelport is definitely based off of Pittsburgh with all the old factories populating residential neighborhoods. I dunno where people get New York from lol. I guess it's the big screens in downtown Steelport.
I like that Saint's Row 3's radio went back to mixing up artists from both the mainstream and indie scenes. Also, Mix 107 has a great lineup of 80s and 90s tracks too
This game would be fire if it had Dex as the main villain and focus alongside his pals, it can be same plot and everything but Dex here would make sense flee in a new city and take the city from dex it would tie the sr1 and sr2 so good and dex would make third 10x more gangster than that shit head wretsler killbane copy cat of Maero! Wasted chance man. Also don’t kill Gat that was wrong main best friend and main guy alongside boss. They should remake all three and put dex on third but with volition shut down it’s unlikely!
Yeah a lot of fans were disappointed that Dex and Troy's storylines never received a follow-up. Hell, the DLC for SR2 with Dex ends on a huge cliffhanger, with Dex fleeing Stilwater, implying that we'll see him in a sequel. God SR3 had so much potential for Dex as a villain. Sucks that Volition shut down, but this was a long time coming.
I recently learned more about the development of this game thanks to Flippy. It turns out that one of the major reasons SR3 turned out the way it did was because of THQ spiraling downward and losing millions dollars from their dozens of failed movie tie-in games, the UDraw tablet being a complete disaster, and the 2008 financial crisis possibly having an effect on the publisher. Because of the loss of cash, they had to scale back the story and lower the budget- which explains why the story focuses more on the campaign as opposed to balancing out side missions and story missions.
Continue: The devs played by the RoboCop movie playbook by jumping the shark by adding an parliamentarian special forces that made no sense to the stories about urban gang street crime and this is what ruined both SR3 and RoboCop 3 because both plots are similar it would have been way better that Shaundi left the saints and went back to still water by forming her own gang she would have been the perfect villain for SR4 instead of aliens where she formed an alliance with stag to take down the saints.
I wish the enemy gangs gradually part ways in other (plural) ways besides Keke dying, and it lead to the Saints winning because the Saints always had better unity overall, which is part of the reason why they lasted so long. Also, I wish the melée system was like the second game in terms of things such as blocking, throwing, and fighting styles. The third thing is that I would’ve preferred the Saints went back to their more communal roots as they realized how corporate they became. The fourth thing is that I wish you could save Shaundi AND kill Killbane. Lastly, I wish the plot gradually became MORE ridiculous rather than quickly ridiculous, kind of like Saints Row 2, but even more ridiculous, but not necessarily as ridiculous as the Cyrus Temple ship plot line. Though, I guess if they wanted to make the plot as ridiculous as 4 and Gat Out Of Hell, I would’ve preferred it that the third act of the game had aliens, demons, angels to fight, and other crap, and then everything casually and comedically goes back to normal like it was in 1 and 2, essentially the series parodying itself in its triquel and still going back to its roots.
Ooh I like this idea- the enemy factions slowly falling apart as the story progresses. Adds a lot of gravity and weight to the conflict at hand. The melee system here in SR3 is SUCH a big downgrade. Attacks are overpowered, there's too much screen-shake and crunch from landing blows, and it just feels all-around less satisfying. Second game perfected the melee system and there was MUCH room to expand upon it in SR3. I also had the same idea with the Saints torching their corporate background and going back to where they came from after realizing that going corpo made them forget who they are. The Shaundi and Killbane decision was such trash. Killbane, for as much as I love his speeches, didn't earn his way into being a villain that the player feels like they NEED to stop, to the point of risking the life of a friend to do it. All of the villains could've been better written. I can't speak for every fan, but I feel like players would've had less resentment towards this title had the ridiculous elements been introduced way later in the game.

Holy shit... You're right. It starts off with some gritty first entries, and as time goes on, it gets crazier and crazier
@@lunarnocturnenot only just crazier but further from what core fans want bc SR2 was hella crazy but it was grounded. You had to CHOOSE to play it crazy.
From dressing crazy go activating crazy cheat codes, SR2 gave people lots of options.

Lol same yelling in the house
A video's only late until it's uploaded. But it chirps forever.
Given how heavily advertised Loren was, and clearly how he was able to keep Killbane in line he should've been the last of the Syndicate to die
Ohhh trust me, I remember the discourse online. That was the most polarized I've seen a fanbase in YEARS.
@@lunarnocturne I don't blame the fanbase
Neither do I. This was a tonal shift nobody asked for.

That scene had me feeling myself the first time I played it. I felt like I was on top of the world, like nothing could stop me. Such an insane rush. Wish I could've left Power in this retrospective, but that's such a huge copyright risk.

And proof of Gat's death was that his body was to be an example for all potential enemies of The Syndicate.

Maaan I've got a lot to say about SR4
Yeah looks like a problem that Sperasoft exacerbated. There's probably tons more I haven't discovered
But I think the hate comes from the fact that we loved the SR2 version of her so much that she didn't need to change just like Gat if you look at him through out all the games his look updated but his attitude who he was didn't change because who he was that is what the fans loved so it would have been good to see the same with Shaundi. also on a side note that is why i hated them killing Gat off
1:58:49 Huh, idk why i remember this but in the original Birk kept proposing to Shaundi like seven times here. Wonder why they changed that line.
Trust me, that stumped me as well when I was writing and watching playthroughs.
The reason why certain dialogue is written differently is because it depends on the voice you gave your character.
This can range from stuff like unimportant sentences in dialogue to entire conversations.
Watching this 6 months after it’s out, I’d definitely watch an SR4 and/or Gat out of Hell vid if you dropped
Don't worry, I'm still brainstorming a script right now. Can't wait to cover SR4 and onwards.

"The Divisive One"
I also made and agreed with a lot of the points you made.
You should have more subs. Loved the SR1 & SR2 vids too.
I guess Syndicate did not get Maero's memo.
Lol this time it didn't take Ultor to cripple them too
It might just be me but on the Kidnap Josh Mission. It always felt like damage YOU do is reduced not matter how many upgrades I have and Damage THEY do is increased! Making that Mission really difficult!
Even with the damage modifiers upgraded while recording, it felt like every bullet was chewing through my health bar
Thats becuase your upgrades arnt active on that mission.
Yeah I found that out from another comment. All these years later and I never knew that those upgrades got nulled on that mission.
Don't know if there is a connection, but murderbrawl 31 shares the simulation number in saints row 4 "simulation 31" just thought it was neat to point out.
I dunno what Volition was trying to reference with the number 31.
Seeing the finish of SR 3rd Retrospective, wonder when are you going to continue with Persona 3?
No need to worry. I've officially shifted focus to the Persona 3 retrospective. Writing and recording is currently taking place
I see saints row 3, 4 and gat out of hell, agents of mayhem and SAINTS ROW as if they were the films I’m waiting for one where it takes place after 2 leading up to them being film stars
I'm hoping that Deep Silver passes the Saint's Row IP to someone else competent

That arm cannon is clearly a MegaMan reference.

The RC Possessor is so much fun
It is also a key part in unlocking the Tron suit. Yk. The one from Deckers.Die
2:39:11 Killbane was definitely onto something and tried warning us ahead of time
The writers predicted SR Reboot a decade beforehand and didn't even know it. Crazy how stuff like that plays out.
1:50:25 then they shouldve raised his age i never knew he was 16 till this video lmao
Not the brightest idea, putting a 16-year-old in a game like this
Ffs feed your ceiling bird bro😂 had me going crazy trying to figure out what's beeping until I realized it was your video🤦♂️
Bro I love the persona music throughout this video
Thank you!! Glad someone else noticed!
Kept hearing beeping thought my smoke alarm was on the blink lol
2:49:40 In the bad ending section i noticed you brought up screwing over Burt Reynolds by claiming Steelport. But the thing is he's dead in that ending because he was also captured with Shaundi and Viola on the monument. The game just never says that though.
I actually picked up on Burt dying after filming had concluded. You don't know how much I was kicking myself in the ass for not knowing that Burt was up there.
@@lunarnocturne Well the game never says that he's even up there so don't feel bad about it.
It glitched me out of a platinum after I got 100%
My heartrate just spiked upon reading this
try reinstalling. I've never had any issues with SRIV but sometimes with 3 I've had encounters.
I might reinstall SR3R for the platinum
Good video. Don’t forget to change the battery of your smoke detector 😂
Lmaooooo thankfully I changed the battery after I finished recording for that chapter.
@@lunarnocturne Do you think they could've finally finished the feud with The Boss & Dex in Saints Row 3 rather than in Gat Outta Hell?
You know, after looking at the female gang members, I always wondered where they would store their guns and ammo, considering the fact that most of them wear skimpy clothing
I guess you could say that the Ronin girl just hides her gun and ammo in her jacket, even then it's a small looking jacket
And where does the Morningstar girls store their weapons and ammo? Uhhhhh
The female gang members of the first two titles- you could say they kept their piece concealed.
The ladies of the Morningstar... yeah.
I don't even know how they conceal weapons.
Also, Boss was naked during the Safeword shootout. Does that mean that he kept ammo... Boss, no!
@@lunarnocturne Oh god
i kinda wonder if the game creators read The Invisibles by Grant Morrison, especially with Saints Row IV's style. But then again that could just be The Matrix's influence, since the Wachowskis blatantly ripped off The Invisibles.
Saints Row IV was DEFINITELY inspired by the Matrix, just in a more chaotic direction...
Bro had me thinking my smoke detector was dying for the whole video
Video still dope tho lol
Apologies for the essay I've wrote, but I got a lot to yap about: XD
I remember playing The Third.
I firmly believe The Boss and Gat would have wiped their asses with this game.
If they kept him alive, imagine the possibilities...

Isn’t it a bit ironic the saints and the the luchadores are green and purple? They feed into the gta clone, Ballas and The Families
I do wonder if the color purple was chosen during development of the first game as a homage to the Ballas in San Andreas.
@@lunarnocturne believe it or not the Saints originally were going to be green. The grove street families were supposed to be orange, I’m pretty sure they still use a loading screen with cj in the orange outfit.
I honestly never realized why steelport felt familiar, now i know, its my home city, i love i get home represented but man its bland,
I dunno how they took a unique setting like that and made it boring lmao. They had so much potential for a sandbox Pittsburgh jam-packed with stuff to do, and barely did anything with it.
What we need is a remaster of either 1 or 2 hopefully whoever takes over volition can revive the saints row IP and deliver the potential
@@lunarnocturne could you imagine a saints row (06) made with the same love and care and passion the Re4 remake was made with
@@ruffryder1208
As it stands, the smartest option in the world for Deep Silver would be to hand the license over to a (hopefully) competent developer and let them handle the remaster. However, business is business, and publishers will only put together remasters if it's financially viable.
Still, a Saint's Row 2 remaster would be a great way to revamp love for the open-world gangster subgenre in this console generation.

@lunarnocturne well that's nice to know I just really like you're retrospectives
Thanks man! I've got a lot more planned!
@lunarnocturne can't wait to see
I think most can agree that 3 does have the better gameplay, the better combat/gun play and player movement than 2 but sadly 3 also has such a bland, forgetable location and the story feels rushed, unfinished and often at times has nonsensical plot and character issues (Like Phillipe Loren seemingly being built up to be the main big bad of the game only to die a few missions in, Shaundi coming across as a totally different person Monica Hughes also being built up to be a villan and yet nothing really happens with her and neither you/the boss or Pierce even caring about Gat's death??)and so there is no doubt in my mind that 2 has the much better story, characters and location. Of course if you know about the development of 3 you will know that hardly anyone that worked on 1 and 2 worked on 3, and 3 went through countless script and story changes and had about half the budget that had been requested and with the devs apparently being confused throughout most of the games development thanks to the high ups in the company saying they did not want the game to be too dark or serious which I think rather did screw the game over more so when it came to Gat's death as they clearly wanted it to be a serious momment yet "Sorry our game can't be too dark or serious.."
Sadly while it will never happen for obvious reason I'm still somewhat sad we never got a saints row 2 remaster or remake. Can you imagine how good Saints Row 2 would be with modern graphics and 3's combat and movement?
Yep, I actually went over a lot of that in the vid. I do think SR3 finally nailed the shooting aspect, allowing the player to enter and exit free aim more easily.
I also regret not bringing up the staff changes that happened during the development segment
that is why this game was wild

Amazing game. Best in the series.
Personally i thought they where better than sr2's.

You are actually wrong about the tower not being a crib. It is actually a crib with a working helipad.
We're talking Syndicate Tower, right?
I wish the story was longer
That's why I think re-tooling the Respect system and taking emphasis away from side activities hurt the length of SR3. Call the side missions padding all you want, but it gave you something to do away from the story and kept players from burning through the story in less than a day.

Saints Row The Third is my favourite of them. Although i think that itd be better with the soundtracks of Saints Row 4 and GTA Vice City.
I bet most of the budget gone to the Burt Reynolds and to the marketing of the game as there too many merch made to promote the SRTT
