Incredible to think that Pat was nineteen years old at that point and in a few days he's turning seventy. Guess life really goes fast. Thanks for sharing this!
Still has a Missouri accent too that would fade after few more years. This is a great post. Thanks David and all of you as well.
I was taking lessons from the late Mick Goodrick when Gary added Pat to the lineup. I remember Mick stroking his beard and musing that the addition of the “heretofore unknown” Pat Metheny was going to be a good thing for his (Mick’s) guitar playing. I have never forgotten this, and have always relished opportunities to work with other guitarists. Well, as they say, “the rest is history!”
Proud Southerner born 8-12-54 in Lee's Summit ( KC metro city, named for R.E. Lee).
And Gary Burton is 81 !??
@@davetrayford No shit? Thank you. Great info.
Wow this is so precious. Metheny at age 19, at the very beginning, on an electric 12 string! already with that unmistakable Metheny tone that has enchanted us for 5 decades. Gary Burton is such a treasure and it's great hearing Mick Goodrich too.
ok, ok...
This is indeed a historical video. Pat Metheny‘s development during these early years from a kid on a 12 string to his first own album with his legendary Gibson guitar and his own distinctive style is breath taking. The significant influence of Gary Burton is also obvious. Thank you so much for sharing. I follow Pat Metheny since 50 years and still he is my number 1 musician after all these years especially because of his development and individual style he developed during those years.
Pat has been my Number One since 1980. Seeing this interview with Young Pat was very special. Thank you!
As a longtime fan of Pat Metheny, I’m truly grateful for you sharing such a precious video.
the kid's been around more than 50 years now...amazing!
Saw this lineup in Denver at a club called Ebbets Field in 1975. Superb musicianship across the board. Bob Moses is the unsung hero. Wish the camera here could have shown him more. Couldn't take my eyes off what he was doing when I saw him.
So,I have a question for you, since you’re obviously older than me. If you saw these guys in 75 in Denver did you ever get a chance to see Tommy Bolin perform out that way back then?
Pat was extremely fortunate to have had these guys as mentors. Auspicious beginnings.
What an amazing quintet. Gary Burton is a genius for bringing in 19 year old Pat Metheny.
Happy to see this back on YT with interview intact.
Gary Burton. Pat Metheny. Steve Swallow. Bob Moses. And MICK GOODRICK!!!
Steve Swallow digging how easy it to solo on an electric bass as opposed to the big violin!!!
Daaaaaaang! How awesome is this!!!
I love the expression "Pat was available" on guitar. Thankfully interviews are a bit warmer these days and people get praised .
I love this as a Pat Metheny fan. Being a bassist, I love it even more for early documentation of Steve Swallow on electric bass!! Plus, Mick Goodrick and Bob Moses!! Kudos to Gary Burton! Also, they played half of the tunes in first Real Book. 😅
Amazing to see Pat so young and modest. He stayed modest but became a great musician in the mean time.
Excellent interview. First heard Gary Burton in 67 on THe Mike Douglas Show. Burton a tremndous talent. Became a follower then. Larry Coryell was the guitarist then, a super talent also.
The pre concert interview here is actually a wonderful bonus. So thanks for uploading ALL OF IT.
But…the concert itself begins at 10:17!
BTW - 5:50 -> The Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame Nominating Committee would have been wise to pay attention to what Gary had to say here about genres of music.
Thanks for sharing…how Pat developed this kind of music, there’s so much to understand and learn the mastery of the 😊 genius of this band
I was fortunate enough to see this tour !
This is amazing, so good to have the talk on tape, thanks for sharing 🙏
Oh I love this video, thanks for sharing it. I have tall he ECM albums of the Gary Burton Quintet and I saw Gary Burton perform on a few occasions in Dublin.
Such a great line up. I'm looking forward to the Moondial tour in Europe.
Everytime this material is uploaded it’s always missing Gary’s between-song banter. I’m so curious to hear that. It must exist. And how Mick and Bob should have also been interviewed. We miss a lot by not hearing from them.
Thank you for sharing this wonderful event
I didn't recognize Pat for a moment until hearing he was age 19 in this clip.
👏👏👏🎶🎶🎶thanks a lot...
thank you!
Bravo!!!
Great video thanks

1:14:06 Coral by Keith Jarrett is a beautiful composition.
Pat out of tune...the 12 string achilles heel...still the greatest guitarist ever...Happy 70th Pat!!
Yeah, I read in an interview w/ Pat, he said he'd spend basically the whole afternoon and evening prior to each gig w/ the guitar, tuning it and making sure it was in tune by show time but my guess is once they hit the stage and the first down beat occurred, it would not last very long.
I'm assuming putting Pat on 12 string probably made it easier to pitch the idea to the great Goodrick. How could Burton resist not integrating Pat's sensitivity and melodic sense? By '77 they made the great Passengers album, with Pat only on guitar, playing outstanding rhythm and lead with that blossomed ECM-engineered sound on his hollow-body 6 string ES175.
Jazz musicians doesn't like to talk because..they used their instruments to do the talk...😊😊🎶🎶🎹🎸🎸🎷🎵🎺😁
Gary Burton somehow has a similarity with Lyle Mays.
Wow what an interesting insight. I don't readily hear it but I definitely want to think about it as I'm sure it has great merit.
Love the joke moustache 😭😅😂🤣
43:15
Whatever happened with this Pat kid? Seems like he just kinda went away 😜
Pat has that Tom Cruise smile
When the music came first and people understood it
1:11:47
what is the name of the tune when gary plays just vibes by himselft? 43:10 mins
In Your Quiet Place
Actually "In Your Quite Place" begins at 44:52. Gary starts with Jarrett's "Moonchild", which he used to combine like that back then.
Ecco Pat che aria ha respirato.
Fender Coronado 12 string, not the best!
Hello sailor 🤣
Too many clichés not enough solid composition. Unlike with allan Holdsworth
Pat still has same hair non cut 👎
Just the worst
