Gary Burton: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

- In 1963, the jazz pianist George Shearing, an enormously popular act in his day, made an album that was unusual for him. He asked his new, 20-year-old vibraphone player to write an album of contrapuntal, classical-music-inspired compositions, and recorded them with a woodwind quintet atop a jazz rhythm section. It's out of print now, but Out of the Woods received good reviews, and it remains an early career highlight for its young architect, Gary Burton.
Gary Burton is 70 now, and that's just two pages' worth of his new autobiography Learning to Listen. Here's a guy who played with Stan Getz and Chick Corea, was an early adopter of jazz fusion, and became the Dean of Berklee College of Music. But when he stopped by the Tiny Desk, he saluted that moment by calling an unrelated tune called "Out of the Woods." For his next number, Burton called "Remembering Tano," a piece he wrote for another man with whom he's worked briefly but meaningfully: new-tango pioneer Astor Piazzolla.
Burton has a long history of hiring great guitarists, and his current band is no exception. Julian Lage is just 25, but his own band already played the Tiny Desk once; his jabs and lean threading brighten this session. Their dialogue accentuates another thing about Burton: He may be past retirement age, but he can still dazzle. He concocted an impromptu blues for his final number, and sent his signature four-mallet grip slaloming up and down the instrument. --PATRICK JARENWATTANANON

Let's not forget the stunning talents of his accompaniest Julian Lage, who entirely deserves a Tiny Desk Concert in his own right!
Check the description...lol. xD
Actually was here for Julian
Funny. I’m actually watching this on a tablet sitting at a Tiny Desk.
He has a TD already. He had one before this performance with Mr. Burton
Indeed
I'd pay a lot for a duo album of these two. This is right up there with the quality of Bill Evans and Jim Halls duo albums to me.
Same stylistic chemistry
I had the major privilege playing with Gary Burton in 1970. I was in the American River College Jazz Band (Sacramento, CA) where I played the Hammond B-3 Organ. We used to have a special guest artist perform with us each year and Mr. Burton was our guest artist for this special concert. Unfortunately for me, none of Mr. Burton's tunes used a Hammond, so I was forced to play the piano. I was not especially proud of my performance that evening since the piano was not my primary instrument, but I still remember that evening like it was yesterday. It was an experience that I will remember for the rest of my life.
:') sounds amazing!
That's a great memory
People lament that there are no Bachs or Mozarts these days, but there are, they're just in Jazz.
They’re everywhere, but people don’t want to put the effort in to find them.
Great comment, Kyle.
Funny comment, you must have never really known either Bach or Mozart's music.
@@vova47
The comment wasn't intended to suggest that they were stylistically similar, if that's you point?
This
Two jazz greats in different eras of their careers on CHORDS. Heavenly.
The level of musicianship in this video is off the charts....a masterclass on how to accompany, play melody and improvise.
actually that level of musicianship is what you have in Jazz unlike popular music.
All are master musicians.
Don’t know how good Gary is? Let’s look at who played guitar chords for him....
Another legend
Yeah...Larry Coryell, Mick Goodrick, Pat Metheny, John Scofield, Jim Hall, Eric Gale, Hank Garland, Chet Atkins, Ralph Towner and even B.B. King...among many others.
@@Mooseman327 And Chick Corea. RIP.
@@Mooseman327 not sure about chet atkins, havent hear that one before. is there something im missing?
@@ianbridges6040 fair play - it was Rick Beato’s interview that drove me here!
Wow, THAT'S how two musicians listen to each other! The 'complicity' is off the charts here.
Vibraphone and guitar make such a nice instrument combo, it reminds me of the legendary duo of Milt "Bags" Jackson and the immortal Wes Montgomery. Here we have Gary Burton and Julian Lage, two world class musicians, pleasuring us with a revival of the format.
Wow, I've never seen someone play vibraphone so melodically, amazing.
Saw him once in a beautifully acoustically designed little concert hall and it was akin to religious ecstasy.
Can we take a moment to admire how beautiful that guitar is?
It's a custom Linda Manzer (Pat Metheny's current builder), 'Blue Note' model. It'd probably run you about $17,000 if you could find one
JazzAtHeart I think she re-opened her waiting list. BTW, she's a fantastic person.
I marvel at what human beings are capable of doing. Incredible.
Yo, just FYI in case anyone's looking for other versions of the first tune, it's not "Out of the Woods," it's "Waltz for a Lovely Wife" by Phil Woods. Stan Getz played it on his "Nobody Else but Me" album back in the day. Guess who else was on that album? Yep, Gary Burton. Ah, it all makes sense now.
+Jeff Bernhardt Thanks for that :)
oh man, I wish i saw this comment sooner. I was looking everywhere for this!!
Thanks i was trying to find it, but all i could find is a bunch of taylor swift crap
thanks so much dude!!
O what a tangled web they weave, these goddamn musicianers! Except for Taylor Swift of course. She's O.K.
The one thing that singles out these genius players is their instrument has become an extension of their mind. This was obvious watching the late Bill Evans and Oscar Peterson - they know the instrument backwards upside down fast or slow - colossal musicality it's wonderful to see and hear this and what amazes me how they give so much to us all through their massive history of hard work applied to their talents. I call that the ultimate generosity. How lucky we all are to be able to hear them and see them.
Wonderfully stated!
Spot on. Joey DeFrancesco and Yo Yo Ma come to mind as well. Effortlessly creative and beautiful.
Pure magic. Watching him play those vibes is blowing me away.
Gary's contribution to vibraphone and improvisational music elevated the possibilities for both the instrument and musical expression. Listening to his playing from the 60s, 70s and on forward, there is such a lyrical freshness and sophistication to what he contributed. It's such an astonishing legacy. Julian is certainly following in a great manner, playing like a seasoned master but with fresh and new inventiveness. Bravo!
Aside from the brilliant soloing, this is a freaking jazz guitar comping master class!
0:00 - "Out of The Woods" (Waltz for a Lovely Wife by Phil Woods)
4:35 - "Remembering Tano"
13:27 - "The Tiny Desk Blues"
Apart from his undisputed musical genious, I can't get over how gentle, polite, humble and kind-hearted this man looks and sounds, every time I listen to him speak. It's very rare to encounter from such a heavy player, let alone a legend.
mad vibraphone skills
This sounds so good! That tune for Astor Piazzolla is beautiful. And Julian's comping on the blues is great to hear! I just finished reading Gary's autobiography, Learning To Listen. It's filled with dozens of amazing stories and experiences. Highly recommended to fans.
I don't think a lot of people today realize how great a musician Gary Burton is. His career resume is amazing. He's a true "musician's musician"----- the kind all the best players look up to.
When asked about his mallet grip he doesn’t even mention the one he’s using was named after him for inventing it.
Much like Stevens' grip, Burton grip gets its name from the person who refined an existing technique. Cross-grip was the way back in the day (he alludes to it); even Gary would say he didn't invent it.
Just memorizing.... So much talent and a incredible performance no doubt! Thank you NPR for the tiny desk concerts because they are always incredible!
That's just the most beautiful instrument.
Do you know steel pan ?
@@nathleflutiste panflute
so beautiful, and so much artistry in the way both musicians comp each other's solos.
there´s something so satisfying about gary´s technic; the sounds, the execution, the melodies, i dont know wich one lits up the most, but is simply amazing
Wow! A treat for the eyes and the ears!
One of the first LPs I bought was of Gary Burton back in the sixties. I thought he was a genius then and fifty years later I haven't been disappointed.
Julian Lage is no slouch either. He plays jazz, rock & roll, bluegrass and pop. He can do it all.
This is the best music I have heard in months!!! Thanks Tiny Desk :)
Simply beautiful, the two of you together again!
Burton loves harmony like I do. It's a drug and such a nice one! Gorgeous progressions that are so good for my brain!
Beautiful... thank you so much for the music!
incredible, amazing, fantastic... thank you for that
I just came from his lecture, which youtube suggested to me. He plays according to the ideas he is teaching. Superb!
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏🙏
What a great, great, great sound ! Thank you very much Mr. Burton !!!!!!
J Dilla first introduced me to Gary Burton many years ago. I love how different genres can "marry" two artists together sonically through their own unique creations. Today, Gary is still one of my absolute favourite Jazz musicians.
Can you recommend some others on this level? No matter what instrument. Diving back into jazz.
Whoa! :O Could you link the track or interview or video where he mentions Gary Burton?
this is bliss. let yourself go with it, print it in your memory. living is worth.
pure invention - wonderful - such a blend and clarity - so glad to be alive now with such great music around
Love the tango - the harmony stays interesting for the whole performance, despite all the soloing.
Gary Burton es lo máximo.. qué sentido melódico tiene
Adoreee. Gracias por la música!!!
most enjoyable,two great players,--thanks
Cannot stop listening to this. weeks pass and every day for a bit i need the tune. Out of The Woods sound is perfect
Thank you ! magnifical musicians ! Magnifical music... Master Gary Burton.
It’s cool cause Gary was a mentor for pat metheny and Pat Metheny was one of Julian Lage’s mentors
Always been fascinated by this instrument and the wonderful otherworldly sound!!!!!!!!! What fun to see it played so I can appreciate the skill it takes to make it really sing.
@ Tim Hopper. For me the vibes are in a class of their own like everything Milt played, everything Cal played and so on…I think Lionel Hampton basically started it but there are so many serious vibes players.
Exquisite, magnificent composition filled with tenderness and warmth. Gary Burton and Astor Piazzolla had perhaps an extraordinary friendship. C'est magnifique!
lovely video! I still remember the good lessons of Jazz Improv of Gary Burton, excellent musician and also teacher!
Long time lurker/casual listener of Gary
Came for Lage, stayed for both!
Yessss!!! thanks so much for sharing
Love this man ... Forever ... incredible doesn't come close ...
Wonder !
Thanks for posting,
NPR Music
The musicianship by both these guys ate flawless, wow!
Great rendition to one of the great composer of the century Astor Pantaleon Piazzolla, REMEMBERING TANO is a beautiful piece, great interpretation
True musicians straight out of the music of their minds to be manifested to the physical sound to be shared with their listeners. Thanks! love Gary's mini bio on the instruments history and his evolution on it. Very nice!
I just keep coming back to this!
20 years ago I went in Berkley clinics in Perugia during Umbria jazz and , if I don't remember bad, this great musician(Mr Gary Burtun) was the director. What luck :)
Now THIS is what I've been waiting for!
Gary Burton is THE man, love the 1st song especially
sublimacion total, qué genialidad, qué belleza!
this is probably one of the best things ive heard in a while
I watched this once before when I just knew Gary Burton, and now I'm watching it again while diving into the work of Julian Lage, and this is even better than I remembered! The improvisation on the last piece especially is so exciting, and I love the impromptu music history lesson too.
Gary's a great player and a natural teacher. Wonderful guy!
they're burning it up. outstanding.
Absolutely amazing.
Happy Birthday you wonderful man! #GaryBurton & thank you for sharing your gift ^-^ ~

Gary's amazing - We grew up on Sunday morning jazz - Milt , Monk,Wes,Bird,Trane,Armad,-check out Milt Jackson playing "Nuages" - so much wisdom in Milt's lines it'll make you cry

We are running out of superlatives! Amazing and beautiful. Thanks guys.
absolutely mindblowing..this guy is amazing!
Please add Julian Lage in the title or invite him again :))
Gary, gee I have no other word to describe your musicality
I weeped, so beautiful ❤
I will never be as good at anything, as Gary Burton seems to be at everything he touches.
Luminous. Masterful. Sublime.
Sorry to see Gary is retiring. Jazz Night in America did a nice tribute show. A great musician!
Beautiful work.
So beautiful!!! 🙏👌🏻
this concert was too short . i want more!!!
Wonderful music.
Such a great insight--the idea that mallet instruments are visual!
Julian Lage
So, I guess you weren't available, so Gary decided to get Julian instead... I'm sure he was really disappointed.
why do you think Lage is over rated?...you have to back claims like that up, man, other wise you are assumed to be a pizza faced kid struggling with barre chords...
Burnt
He always looks very stoned.
DereMemo Im curious as to Why you think so? Would love to hear your opinion in all seriousness
This brings me joy
Really beautiful!!!
Keep them coming!
Awesome concert!!!!
The piece "Remembering tano" is great! For Astor piazzolla (in memorian).
Beautiful, Gary and Julian. :)
the first song is so beautiful...
Amazing Gary!
Hats off gentlemen, A genius!
Burton is a jazz genius!
This is fantastic stuff gentlemen - beautiful tune.
I'm happy Julian changed to a Telecaster mode, somehow it fits his expression. I'm not criticising this absolutely brilliant performance
This is gold.
Heavenly music!
Amazing ... both
