When I perfect the process of pulling strings out of mycelium (vegan "gut" strings made from kombucha goop), I think I've found where to petition to do long trials - not many people are patient enough to wait a couple weeks to see how the consumables age and settle out *and* put a lot of mileage on them as a virtuoso (and all the observations one would have, being one).
My uncle works in an airport. Pat flew into town one day, I assume on the road. My Uncle said “i have all your albums” and Pat said “then let me buy you lunch” and they shared a meal. Wish I could have been there
Thanks for checking out the interview ! Pat digs something in all forms of music --and I can’t speak for him -but I know he’s definitely been a fan of Pantera, Nine Inch Nails, and some of the other heavy stuff. He just loves music and different creative guitar tones. Thanks!! André @guitartour
Quick story: 1989 I'm 21 years old serving in the Army, 3rd Inf Div in Germany. I'm in the barracks one evening kicking it with with a few buddies talking music, among them were few metalheads. As a black kid growing up on MTV and in a white neighborhood for a while and starting to play guitar, I wasn't quite a metalhead but I was definitely well-versed. So we start talking about top 5 shredders. They threw a couple of names out, then I throw a couple of names out. You know, a few of the guys from shrapnel records like Marty Friedman, Jason Becker, Greg Howe, and such. They were impressed that as a black man I knew these players. So then I named Vernon Reed of Living Color. They hadn't heard of him but we're impressed. I named Allan Holdsworth, whom I had just discovered and they hadn't heard of. I told them this is the guy who Eddie Van Halen says is the best. Then, I named Pat Metheny. They laughed. Then I played him on a cassette. They didn't agree he was a shredder in the classic sense. But they had to respect his playing. To this day, I'm glad I stood on that. 😂😂😂😂
Andre is such a knowledgable guy, I could listen to him for hours on end. Pat is in really great hands with him. Thank you for sharing John you’re the man.
I had the pleasure and luck of seeing him in Madrid, at the National Auditorium on the 12 November 2.024, and I do not hesitate for a moment to say that it was a privilege to attend the concert. He is one of the great musicians left and I hope he continues to delight his followers, among whom I am among them, for many more years.
One of the single most enjoyable rig rundowns I've ever watched. Pat's got a great tech. I've always been fascinated with his playing and his rig. Pat experimented a lot with Midi in the 80s. I remember when some snobby jazz "purists" gave him grief over it. I always defended Pat's desire to branch out and try new things. This is what makes him a great player. He plays what's in his heart and soul and communicates it so well. Music is an art but it's also communication.
thanks for watching!. And you nailed it. Pat has consistently checked out new music technology, computers, audio advancements for 50 years and utilized, adopted & adapted so many things, always in a musical and unique way.
To me it always seemed that it is primarily Pat the Composer who branched out in technology. Basically the desire to write and sound like a larger ensemble than actually present on stage with technology being there to serve and present the music. Either helping with or solving a musical performance problem. The Synclavier was really pivotal in that along with the sequencers, macintosh, and synths (Pat adopted the Mac platform quickly too for writing and composing). Pat's gift is to make these machines sound human and organic to the point where you might not even notice them anymore. It just fits and works, irregardless of the style of the music he played. Pat (and Lyle) have always been about the music foremost. Whatever it takes to present it and create the right environment to show all there is to a tune. To be fair, I understand where some of the critique might have come from. There have been plenty of players who dabbled into technology in the 80ies and it made the music sound both dated and dreadful because it lacked substance (ie: a good tune). Technology is never going to make up for the lack of a good song being there in the first place. And as far as I know, Pat also distances himself whenever he can from that fusion stuff going on at the time as it is just not remotely the same as what he tried to accomplish. And even Pat isn't fallible here, I think some of his patches on the Synclavier were not that great (on the other hand, still better than most DX7 sounds being used by his contemporaries, yes I'm looking at you Chick). But the critiques are not really warranted as you point out. It takes the quality of a player like Pat to get the most out of the technology and make it serve the music.
I saw Pat play recently in Boulder, Colorado, and I was blown away by the whole experience. Metheny always delivers. After the show I thought to myself... man, I wish somebody would do a rig rundown on what's playing through to get all those amazing sounds. Well, today is my lucky day!! Thanks Premier Guitar and Andre!
Man, Andre' is one of the coolest and most knowledgeable techs I've seen in one of these vids. Really knows his stuff. The shoutout to Wayne Joness was one I was kind of anticipating given all the GR-300 stuff.
I thought he would add that the hex pickup is not only 6 individual pickups, they're *humbuckers* lol With the headstock I think that one might have actually started out life as an Ibanez Artist fresh husk (Fujigen) even though many synths/models were also built or partially so at Matsumoku and/or Terada. I have an Aria Cardinal CS400 that had a hex pickup installed when I got it - the box is on the outside of the guitar instead of built into it but one of the coolest features I think is that not only do you get the MIDI/synth out, you also get a 1/4" jack to get the straight analog out directly from the hex pickup. It's not as huge a signal as a giant humbucker but since it's not noisy it doesn't have to be. It's also nice to be able to control each string's signal if you want to, unlike later versions of the GK pickups which didn't have individual coils for each string.

Andre is an amazing guitar player on his own. He had his own Zappa tribute band called Project Object. He always had Zappa alumni members in the band. Really, really good.
This is the setup for the current Dreambox tour. Saw it in Dallas. Amazing. First concert with Pat talking about his music to the audience. Amazing show!

The mention of 'Adrian' refers I assume to Adrian Belew, a man with more than just a crazy rig. He and Pat together in a room would surely make for some interesting results. As always, thank you John and Premier Guitar for these great, fun, entertaining and insightful videos. Bravo!
What a great guided tour Andre gave us ! And thank you John and the team. BTW, saw Pat live a month ago, I'm not even a big fan but made me tear up. Transported me to my childhood overseas and my own love story with music played before me like a movie. Truly fantastic.
I have been listening to Pat since the early 80's The man is such a musician Composer to the fifth degree. His arsenal is impressive and intriguing. Great rig rundown John
The mic inside the Taylor/Manzer is an AMT S15 (or a custom pat model)- It's meant for the outside They had a booth at NAMM and mainly do clip-on sax mics.
Indeed!! This gig, and many Pat technical choices in general- are about repurposing gear, or figuring out applications for stuff that …. They weren’t necessarily designed for. This is true in the hardware as well as software realms. McGyver is the patron saint sometimes Thanks! André
Was at the Ryman for Pat's show. I took my son who is a Jazz Major at UT. I have seen Pat since 1978 and this was on of my favorite shows since He talked about his music so much. This video was so interesting to learn all the technical aspect and Andre did a great job explaining the guitar set up.

I recently saw Pat on this tour and I remarked that the guitar tech is hardest working tech in the business. Andre was awesome. I have been following Metheny for years and he has quite an ensemble of instruments and tech. Also, did not realize Andre teched for Adrian Belew. Greatly appreciate Premier Guitar doing this rig rundown with Andre...for Metheny. The sound at the Metheny show was outstanding. Andre was back and forth from the stage between almost every tune.
Thanks for posting this interview. I’ve been a Pat fan since 1979. I’m not a musician - just a listener, so every time I see Pat play (over 40 times now) I don’t understand how he does it… I just love the sounds and litterally think of Pat as a wizard, performing a magic show. This helps me understand the “how” a little better. I’ve gotten to meet Pat and other band members (after the show) several times over the decades and he’s so nice in person. I noticed you didn’t give back that PM guitar pick - I’m sure it’s in your collection now! I have three PM picks that Caroline gave me after shows. At the end of a show the stage is littered with picks that get tossed as he switches playing with or without a pick. Thanks again for a very interesting interview!
Andre, as well as having a great name, is a gentleman and a scholar. I wish this was longer to be honest. When the tour didn’t come to the UK I messaged him in disappointment. He took the time to explain the why( logistical problems as a result of Brexit) and also went into detail. This is also must be the most complicated tech job in music. Excellent interview John!
Pat Metheny is one of my Favorite Guitarist Hands Down... my Favorite Album is "The Way Up" and The Concert. When I change my studio setup this is usually my go to to get things sounding right. Pat is a Great inspiration ("
Pat has been a MAMMOTH inspiration to so many guitarists, I composed "The Direction of Wind" especially in honor of this optimistic sound, dedicated to Pat & Lyle.
Great video, what a wealth of knowledge and experience Andre has. I first saw Pat in 1982 wile I was in college. Been a huge fan ever since. Refreshing to see him still pushing the envelope into Kemper and other tech. In a show in metro Detroit in 1984, Pat was playing a blue tinted GR-303. Can't imagine how rare those were then, and now.
Haha!! Thanks and indeed this is a deeply nerdy gig. There are incredibly detailed convos w Pat about vintage guitars, 80s software tricks, multi-speaker arrays, esoteric MIDI issues, iPad editors, new pedals and much more. Yes it’s guitar geek central oftentimes. Thanks for watching André
Congrats to one od the best guitarists and jazz musicians, I’m really a big fan. How he manages to play with such a technique without getting injured is a mystery in itself
What a wonderfully musical focus on the gear and setup - big thanks to Andre for his clarity. Pat is truly amazing but for me this RR is still a close #2 to the Brent Mason episode, where he could not stop playing totally amazing phrases and examples to demonstrate each facet of his setup. Imagine if Pat were doing that throughout this one.
Wow, this was some best spent 40 minutes on youtube I may ever have! So many things I've had no idea about, and I've been a casual listener of Pat Metheny for 40 years. Great job!
Thank you, thank you, and mahalo! I’m a PM freak. Seen him many times. Going to Blue Note Tokyo for the sessions with Ron Carter! I don’t think his previous longtime guitar tech (don’t recall her name) would do these rig run-downs. Edit: Oh, Andre shouted out to her, way cool!
Andre is so awesome! And I had a guild poster of pat on my wall when I was in high school. Saw him many times when I was in college and recently reacquainted myself with the man via Rick beato. I had to go back and pick up all the cds (yes, I like the physical media) of pat. So many good memories.
GOAT. and opening with him playing in her family solo is just awesome. That’s one of the most beautiful Pat Metheny tunes ever written it doesn’t get enough love-that whole still life talking record is killer except for last train home… the one that was a big hit for him. That’s the one track I never listened to! But the rest of that record is absolutely killing
thanks so much!! Learning every day, running to keep up. What's EXTRA special is when i was 18, 20, 25, 30....etc , I'd read EVERY Pat Metheny (and other tech heavy guitarist) interview....and learn what the hell they are using, and then try to study it, pre-internet. Grab the Roland magazine and read everything about devices I could never afford, like the VG-8 or GR-30, MI-10, etc etc Now most of that stuff is available on Reverb for $150, so it's great, can finally use it LOL. But yeah. a full circle, with the precursors to Rig Rundown & Premier Guitar Mag helping us all learn
Just a nerdy addition on the Roland: As far as I can remember, it was said that the guitars were built by Ibanez. I remember seeing Ibanezes which looked quite similar to the Roland ones.
I met Pat in the early 90's in a small cafe in East Stroudsburg PA. Small jazz festival. Sitting at a table with my Parents eating Carrot Cake and Pat comes over and asks if it's ok if he warms up a bit behind us. Such a down to earth guy. I will never forget that day.
I attended the Dream Box Tour show in Royal Oak, MI last September (2023), and Pat performed a spectacular show, of course! The stage sound was 🔥🔥🔥as usual!🫶🏼
Compared to the average touring tech’s job, this guy has a hugely diverse set of responsibilities. Bravo. And not just a tech…cat knows his jazz….name checked Pete Cosey!!!
Ha!! Well, I am nothing If not a massive music freak !! Love it all, studied musicology and many specific musical rabbit holes in college in some ways that has been the pathway to staying busy as a tech. Good to meet a fellow Pete fan. Thanks André
I saw Pat on his Side-Eye tour in June of last year, and then later on his Dream Box tour in September. I'm pretty sure I was one of the youngest in attendance (seventeen as of writing). I've been a huge fan of Pat for a while now (I have most of his albums), so these concerts were a dream come true. Both of them were astounding. I didn't look away for a minute-- I was so focused. I hope to catch a few more in the future if I can. Thanks for for the show! I'll never forget it.
Fascinating stuff! As an Ovation owner I would have loved to hear Andre's comments on Pat's Ovation classical. I've never heard anybody else get such awesome tone out of an Ovation.
Besides Andre' having my dream job, I'd like to give him credit for shoutin' out my dear friend Frank Robbins. Frank and I worked at Sadowsky together and I follow him to this day. Thanks Andre'... and thank you Pat Metheny for an enormous amount of listening pleasure throughout the decades.
This was fantastic. Saw Pat on the Dream Box tour and have seen him many times over the years. Great job Andre, you seem like a great fit for Pat and his vision. Also appreciate the shout to the "jedi" Carolyn. I once got her to (begrudgingly) toss me a pick during breakdown after the show :)
An acquaintance of mine who’s an excellent guitar player and a very innovative woodworker had the pleasure of driving one of Linda Manzer’s guitars from Toronto to Ottawa for a woodworking show. I think he might have stopped overnight just to have a little time to play. Thanks for a great interview.
So great to see, thanks, Andre, impressive for Pat to have someone so knowledgeable about the music on board. Must be a fun gig! Thanks for being so open about the mysteries behind the scenes. If I recall, Pat was more secretive about his tech setup for the Orchestrion project. Would be great to learn more about how the Ableton is used.
I don't want to nitpick here, but sorry PG, you have your Ibanez model numbers wrong. The one you labeled PM100 is actually a new prototype similar to the current signature PM200, but with a Charlie Christian pickup. It was made by Ibanez after Metheny started touring with a Daniel Slaman guitar. Damage control, I guess... The one labeled PM120 is actually a PM200. PM120 is a double cutaway, double pickup model, and can be seen in this video starting at 26:50. It is the one on the far right. There was a number of Metheny signatures by Ibanez over the years, but currently only PM200 is in production. There was also a cheaper version of that guitar called PM2, made in China and later in Indonesia. Ibanez discontinued this one 2 years ago.
I’m a long time Pat fan since the white album back in around ‘78-79. I’ve read lots about his players and tours and sessions and bands and compositions over the years. But never had this level of insight into his actual instruments and setups, tunings, electronics, internal mics, etc. Absolutely truly fascinating stuff. And a terrific glance into how his mind functions, in practical utility terms. I can see he has chosen a very special tech man, and why. What a gem this man is!
I liked his version of Solar and i was a teen when i read interviews with him using the Synclaver with the Roland G- Guitar. Andy Summers used a G-707 and Dave Stewart had one as well.
André love you Cuz ! You always represent yourself so well . Genius is a name you have earned . The geeking out is amazing. Pat’s gear is tremendous and to say you get the “ with a K “ tuned in 10 minutes. Wow ! Love you keep enjoying yourself ❤️🙏🏾
Thx cuz!! Love you! Let’s catch up on a call in dec. Indeed… you were there as I became a geek decades ago and you encouraged it!! Yes…. Note that ten minutes would be “in an emergency!!” Lol
The first time I saw Pat was in 2002 when I was a freshman in college. I went with my guitar professor, and after the show we hung around the venue to meet the band. My professor brought a bunch of stuff for Pat to sign, but he was so intimidated that he made me approach Pat for his autograph. It’s not like I was an extrovert either at the time, but Pat was very gracious and signed everything. He’s a good guy.
I was late to the party. Got an album he recorded with Jim Hall, and liked it. Then much later, I heard the Pat and Charlie Haden album and was hooked. He is amazing.

Pat Metheny's stage is better stocked than my local music shop! Amazing tech, cool dude... thanks so much x
Thanks Andre for taking the time to do this. You are so interesting and personable. I saw this tour in Seattle and absolutely loved it.
This tech is so cool... great presentation!
Very kind. Thank you so much for watching & commenting. See you on next USA tour this spring?!?!?
So great to see John Bohlinger again - really enjoy his interviews - this guy Andre really knows a lot: wow
Pat is going on tour soon and it'll be the first time I'll get to see him live. Pretty cool to see his current touring rig.
You're going to love it. It's a very exciting and emotionally evocative show.
Such a savvy and dedicated technician.
Andre' seems like a huge nerd that's excited to talk about his work as Pat's tech. So cool!!!!
Andre is an awesome technician and a super cool guy!
Best Rig Rundown ever!!!
You're kidding right? Ani and Pat?! Two of my faves - that you've worked with them both💪🏿❤👊🏾!
This is the geekiest rundown in a while. I loved it!
Thanks for watching
André
I've been listening to a lot of Pat Metheny lately, nice to see him represented on here
Congrats to one od the best guitarists and jazz musicians, I’m really a big fan. How he manages to play with such a technique without getting injured is a mystery in itself
Love how John casually keeps Pat’s pick 😅 (23:45s)
Pat's show was life changing. I wish I could find footage of the percussion instrument he had hooked up to his guitar; that changed my life.
Thank you for this in-depth look at Pat's current rig ! Happy Thanksgiving Everyone - John
Love you, John!
Great Job Andre!!!
thanks so much!! Learning every day, running to keep up. What's EXTRA special is when i was 18, 20, 25, 30....etc , I'd read EVERY Pat Metheny (and other tech heavy guitarist) interview....and learn what the hell they are using, and then try to study it, pre-internet. Grab the Roland magazine and read everything about devices I could never afford, like the VG-8 or GR-30, MI-10, etc etc
Now most of that stuff is available on Reverb for $150, so it's great, can finally use it LOL. But yeah. a full circle, with the precursors to Rig Rundown & Premier Guitar Mag helping us all learn
Just a nerdy addition on the Roland: As far as I can remember, it was said that the guitars were built by Ibanez. I remember seeing Ibanezes which looked quite similar to the Roland ones.
Yep, that’s my understanding too.
Most likely, Ibanez is the largest guitar manufacturer in Japan.
Andre is pretty awesome. Rock on.
One of the most beautiful tunes
This tech deserves a bonus!
Thank you Andre for going more in depth, makes me appreciate this Dreambox tour even more!
THAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANK YOUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU i've been waiting for this for years!!!!
His guitars are so cool. I have the Ibanez PM 120 and it's amazing!
I attended the Dream Box Tour show in Royal Oak, MI last September (2023), and Pat performed a spectacular show, of course! The stage sound was 🔥🔥🔥as usual!🫶🏼
This guy is the best interviewer in the whole RR crew! This was a great one...
Been waiting for this!!!! Love Andre.
Compared to the average touring tech’s job, this guy has a hugely diverse set of responsibilities. Bravo. And not just a tech…cat knows his jazz….name checked Pete Cosey!!!
Ha!! Well, I am nothing If not a massive music freak !! Love it all, studied musicology and many specific musical rabbit holes in college
in some ways that has been the pathway to staying busy as a tech. Good to meet a fellow Pete fan.
Thanks
André
What an awesome RR. Easily one of the top 5 you guys have made
What a cool guy Andre seems to be, very thorough RR, kudos!
Great video. He's such a fantastic musician who makes good use of all the tools he can to get such a beautiful variety of sounds. Thanks!
This was an absolute joy to watch. Wow, what an old school tech can do is amazing.
I saw Pat Metheny back in the early 80s when I was in High School. Him and his band blew my socks off! He is better than ever 40 years later.
Such a pleasure to hear him speak, great interview
I saw pat in Germany last week and still be literally blown away ❤️
Pat was the first player I'd seen with his ES in a cool, stationary stand. Love this weirdo music - keep it up
Fascinating stuff! As an Ovation owner I would have loved to hear Andre's comments on Pat's Ovation classical. I've never heard anybody else get such awesome tone out of an Ovation.
Wonderful video thanks guys! There's a lot to learn here. The jazz boxes with both magnetic and acoustic mikes is gonna be my next project
Metheny is incredible. "The Way Up" is always on heavy rotation in my house
Thanks I was hoping someone would mention some of his songs that they like
The way up is a swan song, for sure.
What a great interview. Andre is awesome to listen to
Glad you enjoyed it!
This was long overdue. Really enjoyed it. Pat is one of the best.
Great uTube, had no idea PM was so into the tech side .. that and his exemplary playing .. at the same time ??? what a brain
I was late to the party. Got an album he recorded with Jim Hall, and liked it. Then much later, I heard the Pat and Charlie Haden album and was hooked. He is amazing.
This is just beautiful - thank you!
You are so welcome!
what a great rig rundown, what a great guy :) thank you
I light up as soon as I see Andre.
Best episode EVER. Thank you!!!
Amazing! I can never get tired of hearing about Pat Metheny.
Not only a killer player, but the man can program a Synclavier like no other. :)
