Boondocking - Alpine Camp Chef Wood Stove Set Up And Review

  • Testing out the new Alpine camp chef wood stove. It sat in my apartment as a decoration for a year before I finally baked the enamel off of it. Highly recommended vs. the military style light weight camp stoves.

      His recording gear has certainly improved since 2017, and now he has that fancy checkmark next to his name.
      I only found him because of "stealth camping," but that's more of a rough-times survival thing, I camp to socialize and have fun... can't be stealth when you have 4 guys drinking.
      Now I have to find the ice-fishing video where this stove is used.

    I have this exact stove along with nesting water heater and love it. Steve, hilarious the way you throw the parts all over and throw the door open like you’re trying to break the hinges but still say, “that probably means it’s going to last a while”. If you take care of it, it will last even longer. 😂

    Camp chef should've given Steve the stove for free for how much free advertising they've gotten for it through Steve's videos. I don't even winter camp but, because of Steve's channel, I know I must eventually have one! For under $200, and all it does for you, its a steal. And if you take good care of it, it can last you a lifetime.

    I have the same stove some of the modifications ive done as follows
    I put harbor freight chipping hammer spring handles( cut them off the hammers ) on the door latch and front vent
    Put some fire proof door seal around the door
    Put rubber end caps on the legs
    Made little handles on the leg thumb screws ( they look like the tightening handle on a vice)
    I welded nuts onto self taping screws then put 2 at each smoke stack connection joint
    Made my own rain cap with spark arrestor screen
    Found a vintage Milatary wood stove shovel that fits inside the stove when taken apart
    Stove works great
    Keeps the 13’X20’ wall tent cozy in the winter time
    The water tank is a bit noisy when its heating water

    Since covid, I started gardening more. I'm getting ready to put together a greenhouse, with a aquaponics for fruits, veggies, and tilapia. This stove will be subgrade, and hopefully produce ample heat. Aquaponics has a nice thermal mass and with the mild winters here, I might not even need to use it many years. But this will ensure a extra layer of protection to the system as weather can be unpredictable at times

      @campingwithsteve  6 років тому +1

      O hey, it doesn't have a secondary burn chamber, but I've never had an issue with warmth. I tested it out last night in -33 Degrees in a small shack and it kept it almost uncomfortably hot. It is fairly heavy as is, so I am comfortable with the trade off between a secondary burn chamber and weight. New video testing it out here:

    • @campingwithsteve
      @campingwithsteve  4 роки тому +10

      It is amazing. Heavy, but amazing. The spark arrestor is just a mesh bag thing, but it hasn’t fallen apart yet. The stove has got LOTS of use, and I mean on the order of hundreds of fires.... still holding up perfectly. I had bought some gasket to put around the door, but it closes too tightly for the gasket to fit (with the gasket rope I bought) it would probably work well with a thin gasket. All in all... best purchase ive made in a while

      How do you know like it ?
      Pros ?
      Cons ?
      What type of application are you using it for ?
      Did you use engine epoxy to glue on a fiberglass gasket ?
      Thinking of picking one up for a "just in case" window install.
      I appreciate your time spent in responding.

    Given the high likelihood of this being on uneven ground I would think they would go with three legs. Maybe they decided to go with four for extra safety.

    I have this stove but I can’t get the stove pipe to stand up by itself, the very top pipe won’t go on (too big) and I can’t get the spark arrester to go on the very top pipe - I had to put the arrester on the 2nd to last pipe.

    DO YOU NEED TO PUT CREOSOTE REMOVER IN IT? Does it need a cap to keep out rain and wind?
