Yeah, cuz he said at one point that the fan and strode was 25 at the breakers (and that was without relay and harness), so I think he might be firgetting and under pricing some things. 1st build anyhow. Just a pity I'm a petrol head. I'm loving the white truck too!
Nice work dude! I’m in the Air Force and I picked up a 3rd Gen Hilux Surf, manual, 1KZ-TE while stationed in Japan. I’m in Germany with it now, moving to the US in 2021 with it. :)
What an incredible build. My hat is off to you, it's so nice to see all the room vs most modern vehicle engine bays. Can't wait to see more videos. Cheers 🍻
The cool thing is you have a sweet truck thats one of a kind, badass, gets good mileage and is about the cost of the cheapest new car you can find. Building stuff yourself is 100% worth it.
Coming along great man! My dad always had one of these toyotas sittin around so they've always had a place in my heart especially now that he's passed. its nice seeing someone swap in something that you don't see very often, if ever. Keep it up man!
@Jeff Z He basically built a new Colorado (diesel 4x4 compact truck). You are gonna pay over 40K for that. You could also do it at about half that price if you hobbled stuff together and fabricated a lot more of the parts yourself. You could also just keep an IFS and limit the tire size and suspension changes.
That’s an awesome truck you built, very simple and clean. I like how you broke down how much every part cost. It sounds expensive but in reality that truck will do more, and be more reliable than anything that size off the lot new.
So glad i found your videos! I bought a vw golf with the alh with a blown turbo, just got it running just waiting for my 3bar map sensor then taking it to get tuned, going to do the same as you and sas tdi swap my 3rd gen 4runner. I cant wait! Your videos got me more motivated.
Austin, it adds up quickly! The polyurethane spring bushings came with the super lift springs I used. It looks great! I'm looking forward to seeing your plans for it and following along.
Super clean conversion, I drove a mk3 AHU TDI for many years, (super similar to your ALH) and can attest that they are a blast to drive and acheive mind blowing fuel ecomomy.... I once hypermiled a tank to 67mpg! I can only imagine how perfect they are to mate to a toyoya pickup..... enjoy that thing!
Front axle swap is super easy. If you have a old donor truck being across the front cross member and shackle mounts, and steering parts. For great lift run rear leafs up front, gives u about 5 inches of lift and moves the axle forward 1.5 to 2 inches. I have a buddy that does these swaps in his sleep.
Very sweet. Always been a big fan of the 1.6 - 1.9 TDI diesels. I had 2. Golf and a pickup.,... Golf got 42+ mpg and 370k miles on motor.... Gave it to my nephew.... Rest is history- no maintenance, oil changes, liquids etc.... Ruined. The truck.... Geez... 4spd 52+/- mpg.... I could damn near drive from Richmond VA to Knoxville before filling, then on to Nashville.... I put 500k+ miles on motor, sold for a $1,000 to a Vdub enthusiast... I was locked up, when I was young, and mom told me on the phone that dude called just to say, "your vw is running perfect- just need to put a new fuel pump on it" - which we know is the integrity of the entire motor, timing and all.... But those engines are unreal. I love them, whether in a vw or a swap..... There's nothing like that tick of a diesel. I've rebuilt 2 straight 4cyl New Holland tractors with my dad... Micrometer and all.... Nothing like hearing it come to life and be broken in. One was hydrostatic, the other just gear driven... But I love them.... We have 2 dodge 6bt cummins, 1 a regular 250 and the other a flat bed..... Next project is a Detroit diesel in a tree truck with boom and bucket.... Like a 80s model, and a VDOT orange chevy diesel ( which cranks every time) but needs work.... It's got a log thumb that articulates like a regular boom, with outriggers.... It's a 80s model too.... But damned if it doesn't sound like a gas engine, nor does it have glow plugs.... Very odd. GMC actually.... And not an isuzu diesel. I think CAT. It runs ok, but the air brakes need attention.
Congratulations. You really have skills and that living in the US you do things by yourself is a plus... ´cause when I lived in NJ maybe ´couse I´ve no time or because I was making good money I did´t do it, but since I returned to my country of birth my mazda 5 2008 has not knows another mechanic than myself, engine, paint, transmission, suspension all doing myself and many times we do´t value our own work and it is necessary that someone else tell us, yesterday I was delivered a printing job to a friend (what is what I do for living) and he ask me how much my mortgage is, how much I still owed for my house, I said nothing because I had bought the land in cash and I built my self little by little some time hiring helpers, he told me... but how much did it cost?... Since his job is in real estate ... He told me value of your house is that much....... and I told him that it took about the third part that he was saying. It made me proud of what I had done. So the conclusion is... We have to value our effort and an work. Greetings from Quito Ecuador
I'm not quite done but I have about 2700 total with the price of the 4runner. But I'm super cheap. Went t3 turbo and engine came with pp520s. Ebay .42ar turbo. But I dropped alot of my cost from parting out the donor car. I'm also mechanical injected and the simplicity is amazing.
Awesome truck. I’ve been wanting to do this for a while. Either with a vw tdi or a merc om617. I had a 91 22re 5speed. Overall it was my favorite truck
Very nice work Austin. Two things I noticed that I must ask about. 1) Does the light bar in the bumper restrict airflow to the charge air cooler? 2) The shocks appear to be too long for the truck. Do they allow for full compression travel? Sorry but my trained eye notices details like this.
Absolutely beautiful build man. Awesome work that I'm sure u are very proud of. Beats a normal new truck any day in my book and I bet it will last longer than u can imagine if u take care of her
Under $13k it’s awesome I would just paint it single stage matte maroon that’s what I’m doing to my truck. And spent under $100 for paint materials and looks awesome.
Hey Austin. $13k ain't bad. I've built a couple trucks (69 scout with a 4BD1T and an 88 Toyota). The toyota is rolling on a stock chassis, Bed behind the wheel bobbed 13", 33"BFG and Procomp wheels, single stage urethane, Engine rebuilt, new front axles, all new A/C components, LC Engineering flywheel, cam, clutch pieces, new doors with wing windows, new windshield, lots of odds and ends. I have $8.5k in it. I did it all myself (paid a trigger man to paint it in my shop). Did it all with my kid over the Rona lock down. It was a blast. The Scout. Well lets just say one of my biggest fears is that when I die my wife sells my Scout and my guns for what I told her they cost :-)
Hey I love your channel and your truck! Amazing work and very smart dude! So dumb question lol, where’d you get those greenish looking fuel lines located on the pump? Clip 3:26
Thanks for the info I've got a 2002 Tacoma I'm looking into doing a axle swap. I want to upgrade from the 2.7L but I don't think I'll go diesel. Don't get me wrong yours looks and sounds great and I do like diesels I've got a 7.3L Ford but I'm like you I want something different and I don't want to be a copy cat. Anyways looking great so far.
I bought an '81 CJ5, OM617 Mercedes Intercooled with 103k, Dana 44's, 4" lift, 5 new Maxxis 37's, Chromoly axles, OX Locker rear and Detroit upfront, extended roll cage, 6 gauge cluster, motor is enamled AMC Blue, hoses and wires braided, roof rack, new soft top, light bar, 5721 Warn Winch with synthetic rope and a full blown spare rack with two diesel Jerry-cans. $8,000. CASH.
People in the comments section crying about Austin saying 'costed are super jealous they dont have the sweet truck and the legit skills to build such a nice rig. I really hope I get to see this in person one day =)
that thing is bad ass. I picked up a 2nd gen 4runner and am gonna do a tdi swap but I can't find a donor car for under $1500 atm so the runner is just sitting for now haha
Connor K I picked up a donor for $500. Big headache though. Yesterday had to pull the Evap core and blower out to clear a rats nest. Tailgate wiring tangled in the regulator etc.
hey man sweet truck i want to swap a tdi into an old ford i have how do you have 4wd? are you using the stock toyota transmisson with adapter to bolt up or is there a volkswagon transmission you are using?
Austin..you are extremely talented and did a awesome job....I wonder how much torque and power your diesel makes....very clever choice as the donor car was a steel....where are you located and do you do customer work?
I got myself a stock 86 toyota hilux with the 22r motor and wanted to do the SAS swap and chevy 63" leaf springs. Does anyone know approximately how much this will cost me to do and how much time I should expect my truck to be sitting in my shop? It's "cost" not costed lol....all you need now is a pair of custom seats with gear pockets on the back...A winch...a set of gear boxes mounted under your flatbed near the cab...and, and, and...lol. Great truck, great work!
You did a great job man!! Did you have to run spacers with those rims? What is the rim back spacing? I’m having a really hard time finding rims that only have a 3 1/2” back spacing
