Austin, i have to say, you and your brother Cameron are stand up people.. I thoroughly enjoyed watching you guys. As the days, months, yrs pass you two never change. The pages are the same as the day you guys started UA-cam. The High page likes has never gone to your head nor Camron's.. Big thanks for just being two cool dudes that like to make sick vids!
I would take the 3.4 5vz-fe supercharged any day. Such a good engine. Super reliable and smooth. Bolt on supercharger option. My 98 4runner had 249000 miles on it when I sold it, and the engine was all original and perfect. But that's impressive with the TDI mpgs
I’ve been watching this build from the beginning you are the mad😈 scientist. A lot of people don’t really know how much work you are putting in. Mad Respect coming from your brothers page. I will be supporting your page 💯🔥👌🏽
Gear ratio will effect all builds, either gas 4cyl, diesel 4cyl, 3.0, 3.4, and V8. My 20R converted to EFI, a manual 5speed, and 3" lift on 33" tires, was useless on the trail and on the highway with 4:10 gears. re-geared the diff's with a set of 5.29's and that made a world of difference. A lot of time gear ratio in diff's and transmissions are over looked.
I own both a Volkswagen with a TDI engine and a third generation 4runner with the 3.4 gas engine. I am seriously considering a TDI swap for my Toyota. The 3.4 is one of the most reliable and durable engines you can buy.The TDI has some shortcomings, such as cams that can wear prematurely, but, with some work they can last half-a-million miles. Some of the TDI engines can put out 300+ lb/ft with just a tune and still deliver 30 mpg. I can’t think of a better combination.
Another question that arises is "Which VW TDI: 1.9 or 2.0?" Most go with one of the 1.9 engines but more people are working with the 2.0s and getting excellent results.
Stumbled on to this video, wasn't' sure at first, turned out to be informative, thanks, : ))) Have an older 94 4-runner, 5 sp, with 335K and still going, been through a lot of "battles" and don't want to give it up. Wondering what to do in case the 3.0 (ugh) finally gives up and want some better MPG for exploring. Ran diesels for quite some time, (Peugeots 504, 505) and now the Dodge Cummings (does better than the 4-runner.) Currently running a Prius Gen II and still getting over 50 MPG with 190K. Maybe a blend of diesel/electric (used to work for the RR) that would be a hoot for sure. Sorry to ramble a little, you do that when you get older. Take care.
so is TDI more cost effective vs a 2jz swap? 2jz just needs right bellhousing and bolts right up, It has to be way cheaper then the TDI. Plus it would make a lot of tq because of displacement. Put a turbo cheaply on the 3.4 and then do another comparison.. most people cant afford 1k adapter. Not hating on you or anything man I love your truck its sweet. Heck put the TDI against a turbo Toyota 2.4 for comparison.
My VW swap cost like $1500 CAD, I used all Toyota parts. No need to buy a different power steering reservoir no need for a different overflow tank. The only "part" that isn't Toyota in my truck is the engine itself sooo.
Are there any concerns with the specific gearing when using that Toyota truck tranny with the TDI? Are Diesels usually geared any different to maximize the low end?
prepping to put a mildly tuned PD130 ASZ in my VW syncro. TDI all the way, efficiency, reliability and low down grunt ...Great work to put in a Toyota though!!
Just wondering why you did the TDI swap, with the rising cost of diesel. And it doesn’t look like the red truck gets a good workout...... way too purty both trucks look great though. I’d put a dump bed on the red truck.
So I kinda got lucky with a 3.4 I bought one with 85k miles in a wrecked truck along with the wiring harness, and ecu, and engine wiring harness. All for 700 dollars
great job, if enough space under the hood, you should prefer BMW M57 diesel (single 204 hp or. biturbo 285 hp) for swap instead of 1.9 TDI and results be much more impressive comparing to 3.4L petrol engine.
I was always wondering why the TDI swap over the 3.4L, you explained a lot in this video. Would you be able to do more videos on the 4x4 conversion on the newer (green) tacoma? I am thinking of doing a 4x4 conversion.
I want to do a 1UZ or 2UZ.. hell, maybe a 3UZ swap in my 94 ex-cab. For roughly the same mpg as the 3.4 it just makes more sense. And the 5VZ has well known head cracking issues, likely from the exhaust crossover. When I got my flywheel resurfaced the guy told me about it, said its very common and showed me 3 cracked heads..all in the same location between the two back cylinders (passenger side). Ive also read about the issue in many forums. So for me its v8 or diesel for sure. Your TDI is sick AF. Too bad I hate VW’s lol.
I gotta say that the TDI holds much greater interest to me. I think if I wanted a 3.4, I’d just buy a Taco. Full disclosure, I brought a BHW home last week. Now please finish your swap so I can learn from any mistakes you might make along the way…
Ok Austin, I have decided for you (you’re welcome by the way) the next big project! Ford GT-500 style, super-charged COYOTE SWAP into something like a 1987 to 1991ish Mazda B2600 4X4!!!!!!! Building a crazy, off-road, power-beast!!!
TDI for sure! Austin, the way you build, guaranteed the tdi swap will be reliable for a long time. The tdi build I was aiming at was to use the VW tdi with a crossflow head that runs better for efficiency and cooling, especially when towing. If I could get a 1KD-FTE I would do that swap for a Tacoma, pickup or 4runner but they are a lot more expensive than a tdi swap! the 1KD-FTE in a landcruiser prado is pushing around a lot heavier truck than your red truck on 35's and it probably drive like your red truck with the same performance and mpg and tow's without any issues with a smaller intercooler that is top mounted which is not ideal when 4wding
One more thing. If you operate your vehicle in places like Colorado or Northern Arizona and it has the 3.4 naturally aspirated V6 it is going to be down quite a bit of power because of altitude.. The 190 hp V6 will lose about 30 hp at 5000 feet and 65 hp when crossing high a mountain pass. The turbo diesel, on the other hand, will retain all of its power.
Awesome video! I have a 01 Jetta ALH that I love, currently 295K and pulling good. I'm about to get a 1993 4runner with a 3.0 from a family member for pretty cheap. My questions is, I'm interested in doing the 3.4 swap for simplicity, but whats the best way to go about finding a good 3.4 motor? I feel like just buying one on marketplace without seeing it running is a massive gamble, but spending ~$4500 on a re-man crate motor isn't that budget friendly either. Any tips?
depends on what you want to use the trucks for in my opinion Diesel engine all day for offroad/or grunt work towing ect ect if you just want to pose and drive around and the black stuff go gas. then after 300,000 miles see which engine is still good :) guarentee it will be the diesel.
What would you say you would do first if you got a bone stock truck, sas or engine swap? Trying to frigate out how I’m going to budget my 94single cab build
I really want to do a bhw tdi swap on my 89 4runner. I have very little mechanical knowledge but my roommate is a mechanic so I really hope he’s down to help me try this out
Did you change the gears in your Red truck with the tires and engine combo? I'd like to build a 30+MPG with 31" tires. Maybe the stock turbo etc. Thoughts?
@@austinniemela Sorry about that question. I later found the vid of your gear change. Even at 4.88's with 35's you're still under geared from normal. Makes me wonder if I couldn't get away with 4.3 instead of 4.56 for my 31's. If so, I could find some e-lockers from the junk yard to put in front and back!
Austin, i have to say, you and your brother Cameron are stand up people.. I thoroughly enjoyed watching you guys. As the days, months, yrs pass you two never change. Thanks man I appreciate that!
I'm still all about the TDI.
👍👍
Team diesel here! The green truck is still badass though!
i dont know why this video doesnt have at least 10x the views and likes.. thank you for all the information and being transparent about it

Not to be funny but I know you like trucks 🛻…. Build a Camry TDI they have them out right now
Thank you!
It's the TDI that brought me here... I stayed for all the detail and awesome videos you make! Please don't stop!
Thanks, will do!

Where can i buy that 3.4 engine you speak about. Where can i find info on that engine?
Another question that arises is "Which VW TDI: 1.9 or 2.0?" Most go with one of the 1.9 engines but more people are working with the 2.0s and getting excellent results.
Bhw for sure is a better motor than alh, however both are good!
I hope you get your hands on the Cummins R2.8 someday. I would love to see you install one.

You should make a video about you, what you do, what you have for hobbies, how you got started with car work... stuff like that
so is TDI more cost effective vs a 2jz swap? 2jz just needs right bellhousing and bolts right up, It has to be way cheaper then the TDI. Plus it would make a lot of tq because of displacement. Do a 4.7 swap in a pickup after the Tacoma lol

Very Nicely done on both trucks! Love your quailty of your work! Not sure I agree with a VW swap, but whatever its not my truck!
Are there any concerns with the specific gearing when using that Toyota truck tranny with the TDI? Are Diesels usually geared any different to maximize the low end?
Both impressive and clean. Cant go wrong either way.
Pretty cool, I wonder for the TDI, if you could run an inline oil cooler...adds volume and could help.
I saw the race (but your bro was being careful), both builds are very impressive, but being a petrol head I'm leaning towards the green truck.
I have heard Dawn dish soap will get petrol off yer head !!
Brother, Horse power and torque of both engines? And what ecu piggy back brand name?
The red one is asking for 6x6!!! Great vídeos!!!
Love the Red Diesel truck.
Both are beautiful, great work Austin!
Thanks so much!
А что у вас 1kz не продаються???? Это один из самых надёжных дизелей как 1Hd или Td 42.
prepping to put a mildly tuned PD130 ASZ in my VW syncro. TDI all the way, efficiency, reliability and low down grunt ...Great work to put in a Toyota though!!

Gas is going up too! And I’d take 27mpg over 17 any day
I like the TDI better. They sound good and better torque and fuel mileage. Of course, a V6 sounds good with a good exhaust.
I haven’t heard anything about the differential gears, particularly in the TDI swap. What ratios are you running?
All relative to your tire size really.
So I kinda got lucky with a 3.4 I bought one with 85k miles in a wrecked truck along with the wiring harness, and ecu, and engine wiring harness. All for 700 dollars

Damn I'm only getting around 8 mpg in my squarebody chevy 😂

3.4. I have owned many vw/Audi. Current have an allroad with a 6spd swap. European cars are not easy to work on
Did you rear gear for the 35" tires - We did 3.4 swap on 2nd Gen 4Runner
On the red truck I have 35’s and 4.88
Your trucks are soooo AWESOME 😎 👍🏻🤩

Still love the green truck. The 3.4l bolts to a stock 5 sp?
Doing the 3.4 now but just comment that I wish I did the tdi from the start and a hour later you come out with this

I'm running.579s w/ 37s but I'm thinking about a motor swap. I heard these little skid steers have small Diesels 2.0-2.4?
How how much HP does the red truck have I’m thinking about doing a TDI swap on my 1997 Mazda B4000 just looking for ideas where to start
Amazing work 💪💪💪
depends on what you want to use the trucks for in my opinion Diesel engine all day for offroad/or grunt work towing ect ect if you just want to pose and drive around and the black stuff go gas. then after 300,000 miles see which engine is still good :) guarentee it will be the diesel.
Tell that to my 97 Tacoma 2.4 with over 300k miles runs like a champion....🤣🤣🤣 diesels are good though.
Where could i get a doner car for that cost or less......and where could i get an adapter plate?
It would be awesome to see you fab up a Mercedes OM606 or OM605 swap for your four door Tacoma!
Then, write up a build guide for guys like me!
What would you say you would do first if you got a bone stock truck, sas or engine swap? Trying to frigate out how I’m going to budget my 94single cab build
Red truck is bad bro a conversation starter no question
Love the green truck. Is AVR your company?

Hey, Austin. Great videos. Do you think the TDI would serve well pushing a toyota motorhome, 6000 lb.? You mentioned high EGTs.
Hi! I have an 83 pick up and am really thinking about doing the TDI swap, wat resources do you have that could help along the way? Thanks in advance!
Also when will you have large Grey mtga shirts back in stock
3.4 for the win
What year is the green Tacoma
Did you change the gears in your Red truck with the tires and engine combo? I'd like to build a 30+MPG with 31" tires. Maybe the stock turbo etc. Thoughts?
Yes 4.88 gears! I’d upgrade turbo and injectors for sure
@@austinniemela Sorry about that question. I later found the vid of your gear change. Even at 4.88's with 35's you're still under geared from normal.
