  • Today's discussion is on the different TYPES of commercial food for ferrets: kibble, canned/wet, freeze dried, and air dried! I talk about all 4 of them and finally I get into which one I think is the best for ferrets, and I go over rotational feeding!
Side note, many of you have seen my instagram post about Luna passing away earlier this week. This video was filmed 2 days before she passed and it's the last video I have her in. She went from being perfectly fine to not with us anymore in a span of 24 hours (as ferrets often do). It was both heart breaking and heart warming to see her in here for that minute or so that I'm holding her. I love you so much Luna. Dook in peace. You'll be so missed.

I switched my boys to canned raw a while back as we were having problems getting a suitable raw. They love the canned stuff and I have seen an improvement in their behaviour. Certainly more energy 😂. They also get raw chicken pieces with bones and some kibble sometimes to help with the teeth. They also get fresh salmon if I'm feeling generous 😂. Thanks for this video!

I love all of your videos! I'm going to be adopting a ferret soon so your videos are great for brushing up on my ferret knowledge. A few years ago my ferret Lyla was stolen from my house when someone broke in. I was absolutely devastated and still am. But I'm looking forward to being a ferret mom again. Side note- I love your pink hair. You are very pretty and have a great personality 🙂

With Freeze dried it depends on the brand you just have to read the ingredients and know what does what.

I know you explained in your first video you weren't going to name specific companies or products... but like you, I've never really heard of anyone feeding ferrets canned food... so what are/is a good brand of canned food for ferrets? Break your rule! (or someone else mention it). I do mostly freeze dried and air dried myself for my fuzzbutts, but I like mixing it up... i keep my ferrets guessing (I actually do a mix of kibble/air dried/freeze dried and raw... I just don't do any canned).

I’m not sure from experience about canned food and I don’t wanna give you the wrong answer so I’m not gonna say anything on that, but I just wanted to let you know it’s actually not recommended to feed a mixture of kibble and raw. It can lead to leaky gut. Basically the enzymes and stomach acid that break down raw food have to be much stronger etc. when eating raw. Canned, freeze dried, and air dried are all great when paired with raw because they are all either not cooked or just slightly cooked and don’t have any additives. But kibble is highly processed with a lot of additives and the stomach struggles to digest it when it’s constantly juggling between kibble and “raw”. I would definitely look into it more just Incase. I first learned about it from Pazuandfriends on youtube and then did some further research
(Not attacking you by the way by any means just wanted to let you know it’s a possibility Incase you didn’t know! If you already knew that and still think it’s a better option then it’s your life and your ferrets and you do whatever you want as long as your confident about it!)

@@themeemster2211 I like Pazuandfriends... seen a lot of her stuff... but to be honest, she's kinda dogmatic militant about raw and comes across that if you're not doing 100% raw, you hate your ferrets and are a terrible person.
I definitely agree that raw is the best and kibble is the worst... im a lot older than Pazuandfriends and I've been raising ferrets for over 20 years now... my ferrets are always healthy and have long productive lives... one of the biggest problems with ferrets in the US, far bigger than diet, which leads to more problems than anything else, and something even Pazu doesn't avoid... Marshall Farm ferrets (Pazu hates MarshallFarms, rightly so, and she doesn't support them financially, but living in New York and rescuing ferrets from shelters [a good thing] she still ends up with Marshall bred ferrets)... they just have really bad genes that lead to a lot of health problems no matter what you do.
People outside the US don't have this problem, and those inside the US who research and find a good private breeder removed from the Marshall Farm chain... just let me say this... you'll save a ton of money in vet bills and early death heartache if you stay away from Marshall Farm ferrets. I'd feed a non Marshall Farm ferret kibble it's whole life and it would live longer and healthier than a raw fed Marshall Farms ferret... that inbred genepool is just a mess.
Having said that, kibble can be mixed with other foods, it won't magically wreck your ferret. With all due respect to Pazu she's not always right about everything. She's extremely anti-kibble and doesn't have an unbiased view about it.
My ferrets main diet is air and freeze dried with occasional eggs (I don't overdue eggs), plenty of fresh water and a backup of high quality kibble.
I've been doing this for a couple of decades now... I pay a lot more for my private-bred ferrets, but it's a huge cost savings in the long run over vet bills that Marshall ferrets guarantees... and the heartache of a shorter lifespan.
This channel is far more open minded which is why I enjoy it more than Pazu... I've just never heard of feeding ferrets canned food before... in all my years and my friends in the ferret community, that's first I heard of it... maybe it's a Canadian thing! Lol

What brand food do you use?

    • @wolfshanze5980
      @wolfshanze5980 2 роки тому +5

@@user-sb8be5lg4m I feed my ferrets multiple types of food and various versions of each.
As a base, something that's just always available to them I use Wysong ferret kibble... it's kinda the bottom layer of their food crocks and something that's always there in the middle of day or late at night if they get hungry when nobody is around.
I top off their crocks each day with Ziwi Peak freeze dried raw... various flavors. This is "technically" probably the healthiest food you can feed your ferrets shy of a prepared all-raw diet.
Finally, I also give them plenty of Stella & Chewy's freeze dried (cat food) nuggets... various flavors, though their favorite by far is Rabbit 🐇. This is definitely their favorite and what they go nuts for, and it is healthy for them.
I also give them raw fresh eggs once a week, which is very healthy for them and helps their coats, but don't overdo eggs, once a week is fine, but no more often than that, as too many eggs can mess with their digestive system.
Plenty of fresh water, changed out daily in bowls or crocks, no water bottles!
The above diet has a lot of variety and flexibility... it's a lot less expensive and less maintenance than a full 100% raw diet... of course a 100% raw diet is the best you can do, and if that's what someone wants to do, more power to them... however, it's very expensive and time consuming and not a realistic option in every home.
On the opposite end of the spectrum is the 100% dry kibble diet, while cheap and easy, it's not doing your ferrets any favors... my approach is more expensive of course than "just kibble" but I like to consider it a more middle of the road approach to feeding ferrets, and I've been doing this for a long time with great results.

Looking into feeding kibble (freeze dried) how often should i feed? cs i know for rats you can just fill up a bowl and they’ll get what they want, do ferrets need to be on a set schedule or can you just leave food for them to get when they’d like

I have no clue what brand of canned food to go with and mine have been on the same kibble their whole life. I’ve had them for a year and I’m lucky they will eat eggs and they will only drink freeze dried raw water from the food lol. I just want them to live out whatever time they have left like a king and a Queen. They are 6 or 7. Dr guessed the age of both. It’s frustrating but I’m not freaking out. They are their own boss. All I can do is expose them to new things and try.

    *°^°* ANOTHER GREAT VIDEO!!! *°^°*
(|} ~ This is just me, *BUT*... i wish you dropped all the videos of this series all at the same time cuz I could literally binge watch all of the videos on this topic!!! ~ {|)
This video did raise some questions for me! I think I know the answers, but now I am "con-fuzzed" (LOL!)!!! So, I hope you can help me raise some light on the subject!
Is it okay to feed your floof babies just one flavor of food? Whether it be any of the five types of the "commercial foods" that you mentioned at the beginning of this video. It seems that my floof babies tend to like salmon flavored foods the most over any other flavored foods (i.e. - chicken, turkey, other types of fish, etc.). When I look at the list of ingredients on my bag of kibble, it has meats in the "first six ingredients | no meals".
    So... my questions are:
    • Does the flavor of your kibble make a difference when it comes to the type of meats, organs, and fats that it provides?
    -OR-
    • Do you need to feed your floof babies different flavors of food so you can offer them the nutrients that different meats, organs, and fats provide?
    -OR-
    • Is it all the same???
Like I said in the beginning...
I thought I knew the answer to this question, but I would like to know your thoughts on the topic!
Thank you so much for your time and consideration in this matter!!!
    *°^°* YOU'RE AWESOME!!! *°^°*

I heard that you’re not supposed to change a ferrets diet because their GI tract is very sensitive is that just simply untrue? It makes complete sense based on everything you’re saying why rotational feeding is best I’m just trying to clarify cuz I kept hearing that you should find a good raw/ freeze fried/ air dried food and not mix n match brands, types, or mix raw and commercial

    • @FriendlyNeighborhoodFerrets
      @FriendlyNeighborhoodFerrets  2 роки тому

It's something I hear too and really that just comes down to a matter of opinion.
Strictly talking about the mix of different commercial foods: their bodies need to get used to the constant changing of foods and while they get used to it, digestive upset is common. It's the same with cats and dogs. Some pets have more sensitive stomachs than others and because of that they can't handle a rotational diet, but that doesn't mean it's bad for every pet. The key is to start off slowly, just like I talk about in the first video on this series.
In regards to the mixing of raw and commercial: I'm honestly not sure! I've heard claims that you shouldn't do it (because it can cause leaky gut), but mixing them is extremely common for ferrets in Europe, and there are plenty of people here in Canada that feed their dogs a raw/kibble diet. I was going to spend some time talking about my opinions on the mix, but I wasn't able to find enough information to form an opinion on it that I felt comfortable sharing.
