- Today I'm telling you guys all about my favourite treats to give my ferrets! Don't forget that treats are just that: TREATS! So make sure you're feeding in moderation.

NOTE ON SOURCING: In the last several years there have been many dog deaths linked to eating chicken jerky treats (www.petfoodindustry.com/artic.... Though it hasn't been completely confirmed, the main theory behind this is a problem with sourcing since the meat from these treats has come from China (www.washingtonpost.com/nation.... Different countries have different laws regarding food regulations, ESPECIALLY when it comes to pet foods. My recommendation is to make sure that you know where the meat in the treats your feeding your ferret is sourced. Most labels will tell you, but if they don't make sure you've done your own research. Remember "made in" does not mean "sourced in". A treat may be made in Canada, but the meat can come from elsewhere. And of course, if you're still concerned the best thing is to just not feed this particular type of treat. I made my dehydrated treats home made, so this has never been an issue for me.

I'm about to adopt ferrets and still ferret-proofing things before, I was waiting for the last moment to order treats & food (for obvious reasons) and I'm surprised about the paste as I saw it recommanded on others ... that makes me remind to always check composition of product before buying them (which is not always easy when ordered online...)

now that you have Lyra, you may need another ferret paw mold, and i have a suggestion on what you could use for that instead of what you used. it's easy and faster,you could use maseca corn flour mix, just add water to it and mix. once you are done molding her paw onto the dough, let it air dry, it should be done drying in 6 - 7 hours.

I’ve been watching your videos for a while and since this video is talking about treats n what not I figured this was a good place to ask since I’ve seen it a couple times across the internet: what are your opinions on feeding ferrets live/dead mice (much like you would a snake)?? Or even live chicks (with birth defects like disformed limbs etc)?

Do you feed your ferrets the purebite minnows?? I've been giving mine the Marshalls minnows but totally agree with you! Looking to replace them for a different brand. I already give them chicken purebites.
Yep the purbites ones are great! They're the same as the marshalls because they're both one ingredient so your ferrets should like them just as much :D

Quick question, I’ve been reading up before I get my ferret and lots of websites are saying fish (although not as bad) is bad to feed them?
Malt paste are okay for dogs especially very small puppies who are victims of low blood sugar but NOT for ferrets.

Ferret chew sticks good? They are made of rice flour. My ferret is a chewer I know that it doesn't give them any nutrient content, but is it better for her to eat rice flour or her to chew her beds/blankets/waterbowl/cage ramps/cage bars? The chew bars actually keep her from bitting anything else, but I don't want to give her sugar that's not sure is that's what rice flour and corn starch will end up being in her blood stream

It took her a little while to actually be interested in eating them, but now that she's got a tease for them she's OBSESSED!
Most pet stores have a wide selection of one ingredient chews geared towards dogs, so it's worth going in just to look around :D
I recommend salmon skin rolls or another option on Etsy there is a store called The pampered ferret and they sell healthy chicken chew sticks that are safe for your stinky slinkies!

oh no is it too late now because i gave that paste to my ferrets. The association where i got them said that it would be good for them. They are 9 months old now i hope they don‘t get sick of it now 🥺
It's unfortunate because it's promoted as a supplement, so a lot of people make that mistake. I gave it to my girls when I first got them too, don't feel bad. Now that you know it's not good just avoid it from now on 😊

My ferret is kibble feed.Can I feed my ferret canned sardines from grocery store? Or is there only a specific kind?
I would avoid them since most canned fish at grocery stores has brine/salt added to it which you don't want to give them. Checking out what your local pet store has is a safer idea.
We have bandits stuff but my pets does not eat them

Single ingredient meat treats are the way to go (Chicken or turkey whatever animal protein your ferrets like!)

I bought babies (2).. they are doing great! Very young, n playful! I found out they are "Marshal" ferrets.. I'm worried cus they are my 16 yr old n I hear bad things about Marshall.. any advice?
At this point, there's nothing you can really do. Just make sure you've gotten them to the vet for a physical exam including an ear mite swab, fecal, and to talk to your vet about vaccines. Almost all ferrets from ferret mills (like Marshall farms) will have ear mites, and many will have parasites that need to be treated with medication. Any animals bought from pet stores are from mills, where they're bred in very inhumane conditions by people who have no regard for their health. If you end up getting more pets in the future, I encourage you to avoid pet stores and seek out a reputable breeder, rescue, or rehomed animal.

Bandit treats are really unhealthy so personally I would ditch them 😬 it's a lot of unnecessary sugar which is super bad for their pancreas (watch my video on insulinoma if you want to know why sugars are bad for ferrets)
What if I only use the ferret lax when they are in shed season to prevent hair balls I thought that was the whole point
it doesnt prevent hairballs that well, a raw egg yolk does a better job
Nope nope nope please throw it out bhfdjn It can give your babies insulinoma and its supporting Marshalls(leading ferret mill in the US) Instead use 1 whole egg per ferret once every week for hairball prevention and extra vitamins
I know some ppl sell freeze dried mice as ferret treats would these be good for them? I feel they wouldnt bc of the bones and fur and such
those are safe to feed ferrets! small mammals and rodents are part of a ferrets natural diet :) bones and fur dont hurt carnivorous animals so long as theyre raw, never give them cooked bones

@@aprilkeeler2052 that should be fine! im still learning myself so im not 100% sure how to get them to see it as food lol since they imprint on their food i know kibble fed ferrets are tough to introduce raw foods to but more googling or youtube searching should get results from people who know more about it :3
What do you recommend for raw treats
Raw feeding Miami sells frozen raw minnows (you thaw them before feeding)! Those are really good for ferrets and they love them you can add a few of them into their meals a week for a nice treat/snack that has good vitamins! also whole whisked eggs(you can do chicken or quail) once a week it is super healthy for them and helps prevent hairballs! 1 egg per ferret per week is the general thing idk the word gbfhuds

All of the treats I mentioned in this video are dog or cat treats ^-^ There aren't any treats marketed to ferrets that I think are good. Don't let the picture on the front keep you from buying it, it's the ingredients that are important

as someone who owns guinea pigs and knows next to nothing about ferrets (but recently started watching this channel anyway bc ferrets are adorable), even I could have told you that you shouldn't give your ferrets anything on the "don't feed" list (5:26)

Ferret tone is another malt paste and it has the same problems as the other malt pastes that I talk about in the video.
if you mean the oil like treat, it has plant oils and carcinogens (chemicals that cause cancer) so it isnt a great choice. A better alternative is 100% salmon or pollock oil, but make sure not to feed too much (max of 1/8 teaspoon per day)

Yes you can! All of the treats I mention in this video are marketed for cats or dogs.
Is salmon oil ok
Yes but only in small amounts (1 teaspoon throughout the week -NOT all at once) and it needs to be in a dark colored dropper bottle in the fridge vs a pump outside of the fridge because it can go rancid if its not stored right

Can ferrets eat wimzy dog treats?
I'm not super sure which treats you're talking about, but when I google 'wimzy dog treats' Whimzees come up. Is that the treat you're talking about? If so, no they can't have these. Whimzees are plant based treats which means they aren't something ferrets can digest. Like I say in the video, the best ferret safe treats are one ingredient 100% meat treats. ^-^ hope that helps.

Ferrets have highly acidic stomachs (like most carnivores) so they can't very easily catch salmonella. The stomach acids are made to dissolve bad bacteria like that. My ferrets are on a diet of 100% raw meat and they've never been sick.
Wild animals eat raw meat/eggs because it's what their bodies are designed to to, pets are no different ^-^
Or if you have pet rats you could give them to your pet rats if you have any but you're still supporting the brand

I REALLY LOATHE THE TERM “PET OWNER” Referring to yourself as a “ferret mom” is inconsistent with terms like “owner” and “pet”.

@@FriendlyNeighborhoodFerrets the point of my comment is to not see non human animals as products for us to consume and to entertain us, but as sentient beings who have evolved along side us for millions of yrs. when you supposedly “own” something it is your “property” to do with as you please, a living being should never be seen as being “owned”. They are not products, they are fuzzy people who evolved to fit into a different environment than us. I’m not saying that you necessarily don’t understand this, but you should understand that I have been rescuing dogs, cats, and ferrets for 3 decades now. The abuse they suffer is caused by this Christian notion that they were put here by gawd to serve us and we can do what we want with them, and the notion of “property rights” and “ownership” which is another myth. I once seen a man in Mexico skinning a dog alive in his yard. When I confronted him, he said that he “owned” the dog and that dogs had no souls. I am confident that perhaps you may have something else in mind when you use the term pet and ownership, I’m just drawing your attention to the historical baggage that comes with these terms.
People buy ferrets from Petco all the time to entertain their kids (like it’s some kind of fuzzy toy that they can throw in a cage whenever they are bored with it) and when they realize it is a living being with inconvenient needs, the poor fuzzies end up at the local human society which usually just puts them to sleep, so that means that I have to go rescue them by adopting them.
“Ownership” and “pet” are terms and concepts which come from a capitalist consumerist culture which seeks to monetize everything including living creatures and I think this is toxic to the environment. It is responsible for the extinction of countless organisms.
So, I hope that helps you understand why I really loath such terms when referring to fuzzie people.
The point is, that if you own a thing you certainly aren’t it’s mother, you are it’s owner. A mom doesn’t own her children, she guides them, protects them, loves them etc, but they are not her products to be consumed.
I think it wise to see our non human children as children who in some ways will never completely grow up and will never be independent of us, but not as “property” which is what the term “pet owner” implies.
I realize you may think I’m being picky and pedantic here, but perhaps if you have had the experiences I have, you may view things differently.
