Very informative, but there are some factors you excluded: The Progressive faction of the Republican Party maintained their forward-thinking agenda (including Civil Rights, labor rights, women's rights, prison reform, immigrant rights, wilderness conservation, and other progressive movements) clashing more and more with the Industrialist faction (libertarians with a lower-case "L") through the end of the 19th century into the beginning of the 20th century. Theodore Roosevelt pulled the Progressive faction out of the Republican Party in 1912 to form the Progressive Party. Splitting the Republican Party lead to the election of the Democrat Woodrow Wilson that same year. The Progressive Party was unable to win any elections, and by the time of the Great Depression, those Progressives (including Franklin Roosevelt) had infiltrated the Democratic Party in the north. Meanwhile, the Industrialists remained in control of the Republican Party as a libertarian-leaning party until Barry Goldwater executed the _first_ "Southern Strategy" in 1964. Barry Goldwater, the leader of the Republican Party, objected to the third Civil Rights Act of 1964. Goldwater was not himself a segregationist. He had supported the Civil Rights Acts of 1957 and 1960, which had provided more voting rights for black people. This was excellent. But unfortunately, most US citizens read and comprehend at a middle-school level. And the hyper-individualism destroys any consideration of collectiveness. I always said, the U.S. will need to crack and divide again and really go through.
