I loved this talk, but 3 things: 1:12:54 Social security is actually indexed to CPI. 59:25 The U.S. hasn't had a major recession in 15 years, which is a historical anomaly. This is one of the legitimately unique characteristics of our current neoliberalism era: how the Federal Reserve is using unique new fiat tricks to manage the business cycle. Normally this would undermine the dollar, but every other central bank is doing it too so tbh I have no idea how this ends. 42:00 China has been going through a serious economic crisis for 2+ years now. So while I agree China will probably overtake the U.S. this century, it's not as clear cut as Mr. Wolff makes it out to be. Thank you again, Mr. Wolff and D@W. A book I recommend to anyone seeking a deeper understanding of how our political system evolved is "First Principles: What America's Founders Learned from the Greeks and Romans," by Thomas Ricks. Ricks examines the influences over the thinking of those most responsible for the making of national governance under a written constitution. There is no question that the greatest influence was exerted by James Madison, who had studied in detail the experience of all past republics and why they eventually succumbed to despotism and collapse. Madison was hopeful but far from certain that the American republic would survive, and survive despite the fact that important principles (not the least of which was endorsing the enslavement of some human beings by other human beings) were sacrificed in order to form a union of the newly-formed sovereign states. The protection of slavery as an institution confirmed that the most important function of government was to be the protection of property, however property was to be defined. The subsequent history of the United States of America has been a history of ongoing violence in defense of property over human rights.

It would take a lifetime to get the United States back to the industrial capacity which it I started exporting 60 years ago. However the United States has already passed the point of no return and the Empire is dying like all empires do, it's cyclical.
I feel certain that there are few citizens who feel any desire to be an Empire and are exhausted by the continuous onslaught of manipulations. We just want to survive and make the best of our time on this planet like most around the world.
Thank you Richard. May I say, in New Zealand we have MMP mixed member proportional representation. We've had this voting system since 1993. What's its track record? It's little better than First Past the Post which the British still use and the USA. It took about 5 years or so for the politial parties and the politicians to get bedded in, and now we're back to the same old - same old, to all intent and purposes. Is it worth having? It's worth having if you have decent, moral and ethical people as politicians. I don't know of any country that is in that situation, some a little better than others. I consider some form of deliberative democracy such as citizens assemblies or public assemblies by far and away the best option for democracy. Party representation for the most part operates poorly. Greed, power and wealth usually win in the end with careerists in charge. Finally, tariffs hurt the poor and less well off more than they hurt the rich. It's like Goods and Services Tax GST or Value Added Tax. The rich don't care if cars cost twice the price, or any consumer good. Expenditures for consumer goods don't affect the rich, only the poorer suffer.
But we have certain regulations in regard to declaring source of donations in Australia - anything over $1000 has to be disclosed - we also have compulsory voting and preferential voting...yet we too have basically two major parties federal and state who share the election spoils at elections and when you strip away the blame game rhetoric , are basically taking us in the same direction- so perhaps this problem is a lot deeper than you think
I agree Darryl with your essential point that the problem is a deeper systemic one: in particular in Australia, people's historic attachment to the predominant parties, but also - as elsewhere - the influence of global / international political power, global lobby-group power, and global business power, global finance, etc.on national politics. However, if you consider the last federal election, the greens increased their parliamentary seats on the back of more than a 10% increase in natiinal vote share. Likewise the independent "Teal" movement had a significant impact on the election result. Both the greens and the "teals" have had some positive impacts on aspects of how politics is operating on an ongoing basis - see the article published Nov 2023 in "The Conversation" entitled "Halfway through their term, the ‘teal’ MPs look here to stay - and may present a huge challenge in 2025".

No one talks about the elephant in the room. The findings/charges of the juciarcy at the Nuremberg trials was that Nazi Germany had committed the supreme crime of launching a preemptive war of aggression, from which all other crimes flowed. In 2003 the USA launched a preemptive war of aggression unleashing unspeakable horrors on tens of millions of innocent civilians. Have you ever seen a pickup truck full of pieces of children sliced to ribbons by a cluster bomb? The significant difference between Nazi Germany and the USA is that Hitler's military aggression was sprung on the German people after assuming dictorial power. While US citizens have enabled mass murder at the ballot box for twenty years by choice, treating the lives of the victims of US imperialism with utter callous indifference. The invasion of the Middle East has bankrupted the country, and now people are screaming blue murder. America has the president richly America deserves
People born in the 1940s have held leadership positions since 1993. Even during President Obama's eight-year administration, Joe Biden served as vice president. Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, Biden, and Donald Trump hold the perspectives of a specific generation of Americans. As a result, I expect retirement age to be raised to 85.
Well said. So sad we cant just say the obvious in politics and do the obvious like proportional representation. Cheap power plays (money or manipulation) work way to well for simple truths to ever hit the American people
If Trump's policies cause a large amount of inflation, he's got a proven way to prevent damage to his political support: just say that there isn't any inflation. This approach was demonstrated this year, when he insisted that inflation is out of control. The fact that it isn't had no real bearing on his support.
What makes you assume Inflation has fallen? Food seems to remain high. The Government selects the categories that they use to provide their opinions. Statistics are selected to approve their opinions.to prove their statements.
Trump has said very loudly that he will not allow other countries to de-dollarize their trade. He threatened 100% tariffs on those countries who try to de-dollarize. “We can’t let that happen.” He said. “It would be like losing a revolution.” From that statement, we know that clearly understood the importance of the dominance of the dollar to the American economy.
Apparently the event has already occurred? Since 2014 the BRICS Associates appear to have diverted enough money and Resources to drive Inflation up? Trump appears to be as ignorant as he sounds?
19:18 I may be mistaken Richard, however my understanding was that votes for the office of US President and Vice President are candidate votes conducted via the electoral-college voting system. They are not Seat votes. "Seat" votes apply to the US House of Representatives, where Congress people and Senators compete for their respective "Seat" in the "house". A candidate representative wins or loses the seat they run for on a ballot, and the US House of Representatives is therefore made up of a mix of Representatives either from a range of parties or as an independent unaffiliated to a party. Is that correct? If so, I don't understand your comment here about "all of the seats" when at best it would appear only two seats are available in the US presidential election: one for President and one for Vice President.

Time to end private money in our electoral process....public funding, public promotion, obligation to vote...the infrastructure needed too...
Better yet. Time to update the Greek system of selected legislators by lottery. The basic eligibility requirements would be a minimum age and successful completion during one's formal education of a rigorous civics program. Willing to serve? You put your name in the lottery. If selected when openings exist, you serve for one term after which you return to your private life. No fund-raising, no campaigns, no elections. Perhaps, just perhaps, deeper commitment to the public good by those holding office.
@@nthpersonwhile holding office, elected officials must only receive the mean salary of their constituents on which to live with additional bonuses based on performance.
Way past time for that but the system is so far rigged against us when it comes to changing it in any way that benefits us and, apparently, becoming more deeply entrenched with each passing day that it's difficult to see meaningful change.
Reverse Citizen United, Campaign finance reforms, No PACs. No ads. otherwise it's just a bunch of wishful thinking.
Mr Wolf did not mention the turmoil and unrest in many Latin countries when the planes full of expelled people return to their countries.
Thanks!
Mr. Wolf, what do you think the chances are that Elon Musk will cut Social Security and Medicare to try and lower the country's debt? I realize it's not supposed to be counted against the debt, but congress has been borrowing from it for decades. (Do I have those assumptions correct?)
This famous economist, is always so right , and unfortunately he will be right! Just like others like John Mearshimer and Jeffrey Sachs!!!
A dose of reality. I think Americans' vision about how they interact with each other, based on the Sacro-saint individualism and hatred of anything that looks like "socialism" may be reconsidered in my opinion. Thank you.
That may be more likely were it not for the numerous sources manipulating, distracting, and dividing us.
Thank you, thank you, always a master piece.
Why aren't you the president some asks? Well, you just said it. You questions the rotten system capitalism. That's why. But you can bet your last cent that a new Lenin is around the corner.
Thank you it was so interesting.
women/girls have always been scapegoated and a maligned target of boys/mEn since the dawn of time, not just bc of work and economic issues. The violence and cruelty may have just gotten worse in different ways.
Otherwise, this was excellent. Reminds me of my Dad’s intellect and logic❤
Thx Prof Wolff

We taught the DINOcrats a lesson. You vote for jen-0-side? You pay the price.
So do those facing more genocide worldwide, and now potentially a repeat of that here as well. Gee, thanks for your lesson and bragging about how you have preserved your delusionally superior state of purity and declared "innocence" while enabling more genocide, in response to genocide.
its uncanny how Wolff has it so well thought out he has a very good understanding of the problems facing USA. What I find odd is how Lincoln a republican yet the black vote is mostly democrat its perplexing

War machine oligarchs !
Thank you dr wolfe
I appreciate you much

How is there a choice when both sides are willing to engage in forever wars? As individuals we don't agree to this crap.
Look into the Baha’i Government for your answers, PLEASE!
Cheap power plays (money or manipulation) work way to well for simple truths to ever hit the American people
Im raising my kids up on richard Wolf. I need them rebellious. Im tired of this bs.
An economist talks more sensibly than a "foolitician".
If Trump's policies cause a large amount of inflation, he's got a proven way to prevent damage to his political support: just say that there isn't any inflation.
This approach was demonstrated this year, when he insisted that inflation is out of control. The fact that it isn't had no real bearing on his support.
But it is. We are in a recession if not a depression. How can you not see it?
What makes you assume Inflation has fallen?
Food seems to remain high.

Trump said " Gold Will destroy the FED " period. No FED = no income tax, simple choice. Win Win Win. 💂
Merry Christmas happy New Year’s to Mr. Biden and Mr. Trump please send some gift to Palestinian for New Year’s
Trump has said very loudly that he will not allow other countries to de-dollarize their trade. He threatened 100% tariffs on those countries who try to de-dollarize.
“We can’t let that happen.” He said. “It would be like losing a revolution.”
From that statement, we know that clearly understood the importance of the dominance of the dollar to the American economy.
