I'm sorry but unless China and America share a border you will not see a military conflict. Even Taiwan has 100 miles of open ocean that's insanely hard to start a war and land men on their shores. I disliked that they only showed the views of fishermen in Cagayan, which rarely encounter the harassment of Chinese Coast Guard. Now, talk with the fishermen in Zambales, Palawan, and those fishing within the West Philippine Sea and you will get a totally different view. I understand the sentiments of the people who do not want the US in the Philippines, however valid their concerns are, they do not provide solutions to resolve the issues in the South China Sea. 10 years ago, we couldn't bother start procurring tanks, attack helicopters, now, we have been procurring advanced weaponries, such as Supersonic Missiles, SHORADS, Light Tanks, Attack Helicopters and and so on. The real reason of military underinvestment because the economy didn't start to blossom in the 2000s as it is now in the current era. Country's GDP went from 78 Billion USD in 2001 to now 400+ USD Billion, meaning more resources. As the economy continue to develop, expect more resources, and more military expansion.

As a filipino, I’m glad the Americans are in the Philippines. The Philippines really have no choice! We have done everything! We tried diplomacy! we tried diplomatic protest! We tried appeasing to the Chinese but nothing has change. They continue to harass our Filipino fishermen, they continue to illegally enter our territories and our EEZ and they continue to militarize the artificial islands that they have made in the South China Sea. Also, they will never accept the arbitral ruling favouring the Philippines. What is the Philippines suppose to do? The Philippines cannot assert our sovereignty because our military is lacking a lot. Whether we like it or not, we need the United States and other countries to help us. When it comes to the 9 bases, they will all undergo modernization and the Americans will pay for it. The Americans will also be training the Philippine armed forces and will receive a lot of military help. For example, the Philippines will be getting 4 coast guard Patrol Ships and 2 warships for the Philippine Navy. The United States has already offered to sell us 12 F16 jets with an additional 12 F16 second-hand jets for free. Not only is the Philippines getting military equipments but the United States will be donating millions of dollars to our armed forces. I disliked that they only showed the views of fishermen in Cagayan, which rarely encounter the harassment of Chinese Coast Guard. Now, talk with the fishermen in Zambales, Palawan, and those fishing within the West Philippine Sea and you will get a totally different view. But yeah, the Philippine government should tread carefully, strictly implementing the contents of EDCA that those US bases will not have the capacity to be forward bases in case of conflict rises in Taiwan.

my view on SCS is very simple, we should use it as an opportunity to create an Asian Maritime Union between ASEAN and China/Taiwan. the EU share it sea among it memberstates, this serve 2 purpose: 1st is the fisherman can all fish in peace side by side, if ownership doesn't matter, then there won't be conflict. 2nd is fish don't respect borders, if you divide up the SCS, what going to happen is overfishing in one country will affect the neighbouring country, and the fear of losing out would cause fisherman in between countries to race to the bottom and try and out catch each other, that would devaste the seas, so we have to have a single fishery body to govern the entire sea to which all fisherman in all countries need to respect.
as for the military base, if the US want to attack what can Philippine do? bomb the US bases? puting US base in Philippine is the same as Ukraine allowing Russia to put bases in Crimea before 2014... once there is a crisis, what is that piece of paper Ukraine have going to do against the Russia troop flooding out of the base and taking control of the surrounding? those bases were a mistake but there is nothing Philippine can do about it now... best it can do is tell China that if US use those base, China can bomb those bases back. Philippine will not protect those bases...

The issue here is the lack of their government military to defend their own country and positions on the conflicts. There hasn't been a clear strategy for resolving these issues for decades.

China had always been a country for 5000 years, being ruled by different dynasties and was conquered by Khan for a short 100years. Japan only occupied parts of China, NOT the whole china during WW2.

As a filipino, I’m glad the Americans are in the Philippines. The Philippines really have no choice! We have done everything! We tried diplomacy! we tried diplomatic protest! We tried appeasing to the Chinese but nothing has change. They continue to harass our Filipino fishermen, they continue to illegally enter our territories and our EEZ and they continue to militarize the artificial islands that they have made in the South China Sea. Also, they will never accept the arbitral ruling favouring the Philippines. What is the Philippines suppose to do? The Philippines cannot assert our sovereignty because our military is lacking a lot. Whether we like it or not, we need the United States and other countries to help us. When it comes to the 9 bases, they will all undergo modernization and the Americans will pay for it. The Americans will also be training the Philippine armed forces and will receive a lot of military help. For example, the Philippines will be getting 4 coast guard Patrol Ships and 2 warships for the Philippine Navy. The United States has already offered to sell us 12 F16 jets with an additional 12 F16 second-hand jets for free. Not only is the Philippines getting military equipments but the United States will be donating millions of dollars to our armed forces. Ever since we gave access to 4 more bases to the Americans, we see less and less incursions to Philippine waters. China is not as aggressive as they were before. This is why im glad the Americans are there. All these anti-american protesters and activist does not even know how to deal with China. All they do is protest and complain but offer no solution to our Chinese problem. They don’t know how to solve the problem. And i can bet you, a lot of these protesters have families in America. The average FIlipino citizen is significantly better than its status two decades ago, poverty rates went from above 40% to 16%, GDP per Capita went from 1000 USD in 2001 to now around 4k USD, and is expected to grow greater. As the economy rises, people's live become better, we have more resources now for our defense compared to years ago.
10 years ago, we couldn't bother start procurring tanks, attack helicopters, now, we have been procurring advanced weaponries, such as Supersonic Missiles, SHORADS, Light Tanks, Attack Helicopters and and so on.
