That last picture of Nemo with the golden colours lighting up their “wings” of the costume might well explain why they have gone with the fur coat. Stunning visuals and such great storytelling regarding Nemo finding their place in the World. It’s pure art. IMO the juries are going to come for this in droves.

It's so colorful, vibrant and also chaotic, it fits the vibe of the song and the MV so well without trying to copy it and it's so great to see all the positive feedback she's getting! My favorite part from the clip was definitely the opening shot. We could see the camera go around Marina, she got to show her charisma and then the dancers were passing her in the background and the LED turned blue for one split second as the camera was facing it. It's just a small detail, but this to me just showed how every second of this performance will be exactly planned out and practised. It will be absolutely mesmerizing live! Can't wait for 2nd rehearsal!
I loved Switzerland! I immediately thought it stuck out wonderfully. It’s a brilliant contrast of dark, almost dystopian clean lighting with the wild, “unhinged” outfit matches the contrast of the song. It has darkness, ferocity and seriousness and yet light, almost frivolous moments and angelic singing as Nemo embraces being themself. It’s a song that seems chaotic and disjointed, like peoples initial reaction to the outfit (and song), but comes together and forces you to understand you’re actually watching something very serious and almost “hardcore”. To me, this is the core of the song. Light and dark. Serious and occasional camp. You NEED to wear something like this yet rap ferociously to really show that contrast. This is something where you’re almost supposed to underestimate the singer for their softness and femininity, yet there’s this harshness and darkness too, a wonderful blend that I appreciate more and more. This contrast is ALWAYS what the song was about.
(For the record, I didn’t “get” this song immediately, but after a couple listens I get it completely. And that lets me understand the staging immediately. You don’t want it to be either Jons Tears or Kaarija. You have to let it be both.
Even with this explanation, I still feel like the outfit is too out there. If this was their own concert I'd be fine, but since there's voting. He'd have to shape his message to the public's understanding, or he risks losing points. And many people didn't seem to like, or understand the outfit (minus all the haters and crazy fans). So he's taking a risk, and if he wins. Props, serious props for taking a major risk because in a setting like this... everything different is a major risk especially if you're on that line between out there (campy/weird) and serious.

@@AW-EV-and-FTM oh the color is beautiful, and even the hair or fur would be fine. But for a song with such a deep message, it just seems very thrown together with little thought put in. Which sucks because he is extremely talented

Hi Tom! I completely agree with your comments about Switzerland’s staging! Although I might be biased because these are two of my favourites this year, I have a strong feeling that Switzerland’s and Greece’s packages will come together so well when we see the full performances on the 9th. I’m honestly disappointed that so many people on social media are so quick to hate what Nemo’s team has put together just from the TikTok clip.

Switzerland’s performance looks like a spinning microwave dish with a melting marshmallow on it. Sure, it could look good from the actual camera angles, but this footage was beyond underwhelming imo. Still, ESCTom you have great skills of taking the most tepid performance footage and describing it as if it was the biggest cultural moment since Beyoncé’s staging for the Renaissance tour 🥰 The mismatch between your excited description and the actual image on the screen gave me a much needed chuckle ❤

Or on tiktok so much outright homophobia/queer discrimination. It's so sad to see that in 2024 people seem to be full of hate for people who are not fitting into tiny boxes of gender performance. It is also repulsing their and Bambie are constantly getting their pronouns disrespected. We get it it's not easy in some languages and english might not be the first language (mine neither), but this is just plain disrespectful.

Denmark yassified the box a bit, it used to be this awful IKEA table and now it looks more like it belongs as a platform on Eurovision instead of just being “a table”

Idk why people have problem with Switzerland's staging and outfit, which I find pretty cool, but not Greece's staging and outfit, which look about €20.
I like the staging for Switzerland but Nemo's Celine Dion look that they showed us today is so much better than the flamingo 😩 The dress from the music video is too. But oh well, if they're happy I guess that's what matters.
Greece and Malta really grew on me with the staging.

Switzerland and Armenia had the most exciting staging for me in this group I think. I love in the video of Nemo when they walk up the prop and hesitate/wobble and then keep climbing then slide down the other side. It's super creative and i can't wait to see more. Meanwhile Armenia is so much FUN! Oh man I love how they are just playing up the fun even more.

I’m not crazy about the fabric of Marina’s skirt, but I’m wondering if the shape is a nod to some Greek male national costume, maybe from Crete or some other island? (Forgive any ignorance, I’ve only a vague idea of Greek national costume). The draping and balloon shape is somewhat reminiscent
I really love Nemo’s staging but I’m not shocked about the negativity because it always happens with the favourite to win. My only issue with their outfit is that the material looks slightly cheap in the photos, the effect it has when they’re stood with their arms out and the light catches it is really nice tho

Here are my thoughts on day 3
My opinions:
- Nemo staging is very underwhelming I think it needs more. It needs to be big not minimalist
- Umpopular but Marinas staging doesn't really fit the ethnic vibe visually of the song imo but i think it still looks cool and choreo is great (maybe dancers outfit will change)
- Kaleen performance looked very professional icl and her vocals seemed a lot better
- Albania staging seemed quite bare ( I dont see this qualifying)
- Czechia vocals seem much better and their use of the overhead cubes is amazing however the outfits need to change
- Saba although it's quite minimalist I think some of the photos are stunning especially the zoomed out ones
- Malta looks super professional and honeslty great staging
- Armenias staging honestly won for me today. Completely fits the vibe of the song and will be a televote dark horse!

I think my issue with Nemo's outfit is that it kind of engulfs them a little bit; the big collar doesn't really help them. It seems like something they would take off in the middle of the performance, and I don't think that's what they're going for (though who knows)

The bare legs vs. giant collar and boots is what hurts the balance as well. With slightly more even construction it will work perfectly and Switzerland will cruise to a win (I hope)

Malta: This is what Cyprus should've been giving us. It looks very slick and professionally put together. It gives me MTV VMA performance vibes. While I do think its a bit of a long shot, they've definitely given themselves a fighting chance to make it through.
Albania: This feels a bit too disjointed and lacking a vision. I'm also not sold on her costume, although I do quite like the colours.
Greece: The camera angles are definitely going to be the deciding factor for this one, especially with the one-take camera shot. I believe she mentioned that she's trying different outfits, so there's a chance that this won't be the final one. To answer your question, I love this song. Its currently my number 9.
Switzerland: I like the idea behind this, but I need to see it in action with the camera angles. I was a bit surprised by the outfit at first, but I'd rather they be their authentic self, especially given the context behind the song.
Czechia: I like the vibe of this staging. I'm going to need to see this in action with the vocals, but they've definitely given themselves a shot at making it through.
Austria: Maria Sur, is that you? All jokes aside, this looks good and I feel that it suits the song well. I'm still a bit concerned about the vocals, but I have a feeling that they'll be relying on a lot of backing track, which I'm not too fond of but it is what it is I suppose.
Denmark: While I do appreciate that they're trying to elevate, I didn't feel particularly wowed by it. The only way I can see this getting through is if someone else fumbles the bag.
Armenia: LOVE this! Its bright, colourful and full of joy which is absolutely perfect for a song like this. This will qualify and deservedly so. I'm loving what Armenia are doing at the moment and can definitely see them contending for a win in a few years time.
Overall, I thought this was a very interesting day. Armenia was my winner for this particular set of rehearsals, but I'm definitely going to have to give Greece and Switzerland a shout out too.

I dislike Nemo’s mupet outfit and feel that they lack charisma overall. They really don’t feel like a winner to me. Marina is an amazing performer, but I would prefer a bit more polished outfit. She’s so charismatic though that she can wear whatever and slay.

I love Nemo's staging - the platform, the lighting - the photos are gorgeous. I'm all for being bold with the fashion, but that jacket and leg warmers look like 30 party city wigs that were picked up off the floor of a Barbie-themed NYE party and stitched together. Well, Croatia can celebrate because Nemo isn’t winning. I love Nemo’s song, but the staging looks quite empty and the prop is small. A lot of people will be turned off by the outfit as well.

Armenia is one of my favorites this year! I agree about the Swiss entry - the outfit seems so ridiculous. I'll reserve my final judgment for the performance, but gosh, the initial look is off-putting to me.

Marina’s dress looks “cheap” as you said. While the pink Sesame Street outfit of Nemo is “amazing, creative, incredible, wow, freaking gorgeous”. Really? Well, TikTok and UA-cam viewers seem to prefer Marina’s videos for some mysterious reason. And I bet they will do exactly the same thing on the night of the final.

I think you are way over excited about Switzerland. Nemo is very good and the staging is good but there are others as impressive or more so. Keep in mind we have not seen Italy and the rest of the big 5. On Croatia, the vocals still need work and the staging is basically the national selection performance. In my humble opinion, Italy has the edge.- Composition, instrumentation, orchestration and arrangement with great lyrical and melodical hooks. On Austria, Kaleen's live vocals are off. Denmark to me is boring. Colorful and cultural Armenia but not sure about qualifying.

I think that the pink works but the construction is flawed as it pushes the attention away from their face as towards their bare legs, which is never a good idea. BUT if there is one country with the money to change outfits on a whim it’s Switzerland 🇨🇭

For some reason, I thought Albania’s outfit was going to light up or something, those grey wire-thingies going across part of her outfit.
I wish I could see what everyone else sees in Switzerland’s entry. Nemo is undeniably a talented singer and performer, and I’ll definitely check out what else he has done, but the song does nothing for me. To me it just comes across as…. Soul-less, for lack of a better word. I can’t feel it. It’s style over substance.
What I look for in a Eurovision entry is to be either moved or entertained, and this does neither for me. So it’ll probably win. I never agree with the winner 😂🤷♀️
Oh and btw, please do keep ragging on Denmark 🇩🇰 We bring it on ourselves by sending such lacklustre, bland songs. And let’s be real, it should have been a 4 streak NQ. 2019, “Love is forever”… Oy vey, I’m still embarassed about that one.

I gotta disagree on czechias outfit Tom. The first time I watched the performance, it looked like she wasn't wearing anything on top other than Rhine stones and mesh. As someone who watches eurovision with their family this year, I find this to be tasteless. Suggesting nudity to that extent defeats the point in censoring. I also don't understand what glitter nipples have to do with putting yourself on a pedestal. She literally could've worn anything else, and it would've fitted better
As someone who also watches with family (probably our values and cultures are different though) I think the outfit is excellent to teach that female breast are not sexual in themselves. We will continue to fight against double standards (especially where we are) why male presenting people are allowed to show their chest, while female presenting people are not allowed that. They are just body parts and I don't want to teach my nieces and nephews those are shameful or something to hide. It might not be for everyone I am sure, but probably it's a productive discussion point.
Since this was just the first rehersal, I wonder if Nemo will add a bird nose. That would go so well with the falsetto screams

Although I was a die-hard UK fan of your UA-cam page, this skewed coverage has led me to reconsider.

What are you on about? Switzerland is no.1 in the odds so of course it's a huge talking point. And Tom said he can't wait for Greece too but we won't know until we see the camera work what the show will really look like.

Unpopular opinion: Greece and Belgium overrated. My top five: Switzerland, Italy, Croatia, Netherlands and Ukraine.

Calm down! Tom's one of the fairest, most objective and highly followed analysts around. He always gives reasons for his views..and states they're opinions..not "truth." Switzerland is a favourite for a reason and that hasn't changed.
He’s not a newsreader. He doesn’t have to be impartial. We literally watch him for his reviews and opinions.
