I like that you don't talk for 3 minutes between each pedal demo so the sound of the previous pedal is still fresh in my mind. Too many pedal demos have the guy blabbering on about settings, etc.. so by the time you hear the next pedal you forget what the last one sounded like! Cheers! I used to have a Heavy Metal and I loved it!
@@blizzbee I ran with a Metal Zone and Compression / Sustainer on my pedal board for years in a metal band, playing a Strat in humbucking mode ("in-between" selector switch position). It was always a handful, but I got the hang of it and it never got away from me. But the best pedal choice I ever made was the NS-2 Noise Suppressor, which I only got after my eight years of glory with The Uninvited. A handful? Not any more! I still get the same mega-gain meaty distortion and sustain - but it's controlled. I dial in the feedback I want, and the NS-2 never lets it run away. It makes pick scratches and pinched harmonics so much more satisfying.

Thank you for your video. I really enjoyed it. I've always wondered what the differences are and no one can really explain in words. But you just did. Plus all of them together blew my mind. That was awesome. Cheers!
Thanks for the excellent, prompt, demonstration. Distortion all the way up, and the same chords and riffs across the demo. Very helpful. So many other demos are pretty tedious and drawn out by comparison. Thanks again.
That was a really great demo of 6 great Boss pedals. It's amazing how I still like the sound of the DS-1 the best from this video. I guess I'd have to have been in the room listening or I'd have to have them all myself to see which one I thought was best for my liking still. Still GREAT JOB on the demo.
Each pedal has its own distinctive sound for different playing styles. I have them all and I love them. Boss can be the be all end all choice. You just can't go wrong with them. It covers all those great distortion sounds.
Boss is genius at making sonically identical distortion pedals in different enclosures, with slightly different controls, and making people think they hear a big difference between them.
The most important lesson to be learned by this demo! is ....always demo overdrive/dist pedals wide open on the gain! thanks man! i hate demos that start off with the gain at 50% or less etc!
Well heres my take on pedals: any pedal is good through the right amp. Ive tried a cheap behringer ultra distortion through a marshall mg n it sounded great. Ive put a cheap daneelectro fab overdrive in front of my dark terror it sounded great. Dont rely too much on youtube videos for tone quest, what matters most is believing in your own ears and what sounds best to you
Yeah I've seen a lot of videos about my Behringer Distortion X and most of them make it sound like shit, but I've tried it on a Peavey and it makes it sound really killer.
I agree and add, knowing what I know, if I saw some dude's pedalboard with all these distortion/overdrives, I wouldn't blink an eye. They all have a certain quality. None of them suck.
These pedals are what all the boutique pedal makers use for there base sound then they just try to tweak the sounds slightly so they can differentiate themselves and charge a fortune. Just buy Boss you cant go wrong.
I think it would be easier to compare them if you played 1-2 power chords on each pedal for the first cycle and then a short riff on the next cycle. Decreasing the time to go through all the pedals helps one compare the active pedal with previous pedals. Just sayin, but thanks this was an informative clip about something Ive always been curious about.
Nice. I always enjoy your videos. Thanks. (I have a HM2 but I don't use it for metal though. I really like its eq knobs, and really good for sustain especially when stacked.)
@@rtomas47 I run the TU-12, NS-2 and CS-2 through the front of the amp., whereas the modulation effects come out of the jacks on the pedal board ( BCB-60) and go through the FX loop on my JCM4212 combo amp. Also the MT-2, because I don't think you've lived until you've overloaded the power amp.
Never heard some of those before, and I love that you used single coil and humbucker guitars. I really liked the mid-boost of the Turbo Distortion. One question: How does the non-turbo OD on the Turbo Overdrive compare with the SD-1?
Agree on the DS-1. Some people think you must mod one in order to make it better. That might be true, but if you're tweaking your amp in conjunction with the DS-1, you'll get some tight raunchy distortion with clarity.
Mega sounds so close to my ML-2 Metal Core? Thank you for the demo, I bought pedals randomly and loved them DS-1 vintage old distortion, MT-2 Metal Zone modern with some vintage hybrid distortion, ML-2 Chugging kinda modern side sound, I love them all, and BD-2 for smooth distortion a bit of Fuzz type distortion, love them all
I have both. The DS-1 from japan tends to have a fuller , less edgy tone. It can do a nice clean boost too. The "new" taiwanese batch tends to have a high peak on mid-high frecuencies. Not a great difference but the japanese/early taiwanese model seems more warm and fuzzy
The Turbo Distortion (Orange box) seemed to have more realistic overtones, sounded the most dynamic to me, the other seemed too compressed and artificial.
+Michaels Covers dunno tbf, I have a Big Muff (giggedy) and a DS1 pedal, but I've not really met many (if any) guitarists who have the BM pedal and even more who never heard of it! Could be a US vs UK thing though
Yes the DS2 is a classic distortion pedal love the tones you can get out of it from mild overdriven to full blown raw distortion and my Strat pairs with the Ds2 like bread and butter
Great Demo. You have to try the Keeley modded MT-2, it's an animal. He adds a 3 position mode switch, it has 3 huge tones. He adds better quality components to give it a much clearer top end, never harsh. It's my secret weapon for when I need to go to 12.
The metal zone is actually very easy to not be able to get a good tone out of. get an amp with a built in distortion channel and then get an over drive pedal for a boost or for crunch tones on the clean channel.
I would like to see if all the pedals sound the same when the equalizer, tone controls are at middle position. That would be a true test of the distortion. Then at the end you can twiddle the knobs, and show how to shape the sound. I like all the boss distortions. The one that I had was the FB-2 Super Distortion and Feedbacker. My neighbor let someone borrow it and I never saw it again.

The first three sounded best to me- warmer and more mid-range. Beginning with the Heavy Metal unit it sounded somewhat scooped in the middle. Perhaps this was a result of the settings on the HM?
The original Japanese DS1 with the Keeley mod is my fave. The newer Taiwan-made Boss pedals just aren't the same. There's a Chinese company called Daphon who do really good knock-offs of the original Japanese chipsets. My guy at Roland swears by them.
the camera mic is the first thing , the second one is that the pedals have different settings , with the same setting on every pedal you could hear it a little bit better but the cam mic ruins it anyway
You seem like a knowledgeable chap when it comes to pedals. Do you think the new (or fairly new) Waza Craft series of Boss pedals is worth the money? My local gear shop says that they are made with the best of the best components.Well, my take on that is that they should have been doing that already! What say you? I have A/B the normal Super Distortion with the Waza Super Distortion and cannot tell much difference, if at all. A money making scam?

Hi! All I can say about DS1 is: I had a problem with my brand new BOSS DS1, here is: when i play clean tone on my guitar it is ok, but when a turn on ds1 there is a volume drop even if volume pot is on max. So i did a burr brown chip mod, and now is a lot better.

Not sure between the DS-2, HM-2 and MD-2. The MT-2 is ridiculously high gain but I bet thrash metal sounds wicked on it.
Sounds great for thrash and classic death metal tones. I boost it with a Tube Screamer or SD-1 for more gain or solos.

The first three sounded best to me- warmer and more mid-range. Beginning with the Heavy Metal unit it sounded somewhat scooped in the middle. Perhaps this was a result of the settings on the HM?
You can really hear those pedals come alive with humbucking pickups as opposed to single-coils.
Strats shine really trough DS2 omg
Totally the opposite.Any of these pedals are pretty useless with humbuckers they just have to much output even the weakest ones.
I thought the humbucker was like a blanket was placed over his amp
Why the blues riffs to demo metal pedals?
