Oval split rings - problem solved 👍🏼
Very true!
Man you get older like me oval rings are awesome
I’ve gone to small size one snaps on mine and not had a single problem since.
but 8x the cost for oval.
Yep owner oval. 88lb
Use a snap, problem solved. Gives the bait more action and I've never had one fail.
Same!
I had only 1 fail in 14 years of fishing and not on a fish but on a branch that I casted over and after good 10 minutes of pulling on it. It was a really crappy snap that I found on a lure I pulled out of the water before, cost me a Rapala crankbait...
I always remove the split rings from my crankbaits and just use a Berkley Cros-Lok Snap on my line. I have yet to lose a fish when fishing this way.
This guy is so underated youve helped me a lot ive been fishing for years but ive made more progress in the last week watching your videos ty!
All I can say, is once again, you put it out there! The remedy my problem was cross lock snap! My troubles went away and save time when it came to changing size and color
I find snap swivels ruin the presentation of most lures. I used to do this, but instead of snapping directly to the lure, each lure would have its own leader and split ring.
I've been removing split rings for at least 25 years. I tye a king SLing knot I learned from Paul Ellis on a video of his. It works great on Zara spooks and crank baits. I had occasion to talk with him about this knot as well. Try it yourself. You should like it. Paul is well known for kneeling and reeling style of crank bait fishing as well as deep worms, umbrella rigs and frogs.
I use clips ....I never tie a knot on a split ring...I usually take split rings off completely
Love these short videos. I don't always have time to watch the longer ones on BassFishingHQ. When it comes to tying line to a split ring, even if you avoid the gap, it can eventually work it's way into the gap after several cast. That's why I only use oval split rings.
You just described all the little things I have been doing for the last 2 days. I'm so sick of hooks, split rings, knots and spooling.
I have 17 rods rigged to 100% perfection and tons of lures I have upgraded split rings and hooks.
Headed to OH Ivie day after tomorrow for 5 days. I dont accept failure of losing trophy fish well. If I dont get a hook in good thats fine. If I dont get the big bite Im ok with that too.
But failure of something thats within my control is unacceptable.
this what we do to pass time in the dead of winter
1. Your knots and line tests are novel I think. You leave a footprint with that video; 2. Bro you Jane to drop tons of videos - how the hell do you drop SO MUCH amazing knowledge so often for so long?
I'm in your debt man.
Yes, Oval split rings
Which hook sharpener ???? Dont see the link
Sorry, but just far too much verbage in this otherwise informative video - less padding next time please.
It’s aggravating to try and tie make a crankbait change and have to retie because the slit ring moved during the tie. I now use oval split rings. The first thing I do after buying new crankbaits is change out the split rings if they’re not already oval.
I see too many people tying the San Diego Jam incorrectly. Double check the proper way y’all !
Great info.. these ARE things we don't even notice till it's too late.. Thanks!!
I've been fishing for,...well I'm 62 this year. Get one of those diamond dust nail files, $1.53 (got one yesterday). Learn how to sharpen your hooks and test them. The old fingernail check works. It ain't rocket science and it'll surprise you how effective it is. Most everything in this video is based on bass fishing....cool. This info goes much further though. By that I mean, I do some trout fishing with those little grub doo dads and will sharpen every one I use. It makes a difference folks,in hook-ups and landing I promise. It's time worth spending.
This is underrated. If they’re not sticking in my fingernail, they’re not sharp enough.
Get rid of the split rings and use Norman speed clips. Much faster and easier
I remove all split rings and use a high quality snap.
One thing I have learned the hard way. Whenever I pick up a rod to use, or after each fish catch I like to grab the lure and the line up a foot or so and give it a tug. It is amazing how often a nick can cause your line to be compromised. That sinking feeling of a lure flying free into space or breaking off on a hookset can just suck the life out of your day.
Yes, checking out that section of your line, leader or whatever will payoff someday....
I've only been bass fishing a few years, and I have never changed a treble hook . This season, I plan on using more treble hook baits. Have you ever done a video on HQ demonstrating changing of treble hooks? I don't think I've ever seen it done. Might be a cool video idea .
Invest in the nicest split ring pliers that money can buy for you. That makes all of the difference in the world. Don’t just buy the cheap pair. If you have to wait longer to get up the money for a nice pair, do exactly that. It’s worth every red cent to have nice split ring pliers when you decide to start swapping hooks and rings out on baits. And for hooks, KVD Triple Grips are the best. Owner and VMC black nickel split-rings are my personally choice 99% of the time but, I feel like that’s really is just a personal feeling type of thing, that probably only ever actually makes a difference in anything, when you go as cheap as possible and try bulk ordering Chinese knock offs from eBay or Amazon. At the point you really should just expect them to suck. Ask me how I know. 😂😂.
All great advise. Thanks!
I don't know how you DON'T get your line in those circle split rings, even after tying away they always end up sliding in ha ha
I don't trust snaps that come on some glides. I'm ok with the construction of the snap, itself, but I feel like the single piece of wire, I'm tying to, will "fatigue " the knot quicker than the 2 wires of the split ring.....Make any sense????
Hey Ty,
I enjoy your videos, keep up the good work. Would you like to borrow a few of my “No Knot” connectors to test ? 😂
Grizz
Great info brother, thanks
I hate split rings
HATE them
I have both huge hands and huge fingers so at least 20% of the time no matter how careful I am or what I've tried I end up trying my knots on the wrong area of the split ring and I have to re-tie
I found and bought a new style of split rings that are flat sided ovals not round and where the split rings meet are on the longer flat side of the oval so by design your knot will not end up on the wrong area but with my huge fingers they are an SOB to put on
I will definitely give the Berkley snap-ons a try
And yes you are 100% correct about you must tie knots absolutely correctly
I use a Polymer knot on all hooks and on most baits for baits to long for a Polymer knot I use a Trilene knot I only ever use these two knots and I learned if ANYTHING out of the ordinary occurs while tying either knot and the knot doesn't look perfect or doesnt cinch down perfect or the line length immediately infont of the knot looks distorted I re-tie
And I sharpen all hooks on new baits and re-sharpen all hooks first time I use the bait or if using a single hook and if I snag and get the luer back I just re-sharpen
I found the best desined hook sharpeners on earth at Amazon that use dule parallel ceramic rods or dule parallel fine round files and the sharpeners look like credit cards but about 1/4 the size they have a lanyard hole and I use a clip on retractable key chain to keep them handy they sharpen the hook point perfectly everytime to a scarry sharp point
Unfortunately I forget who makes them
Great helpful info.
Watching your videos is always time well spent
I would NEVER TIE ONTO A SPLIT RING!!!
I read a comment on UA-cam once stating that ADDING a split ring to a swim jig will give it better action underwater. Seeing this video, I would have to rethink that idea!
I put a snap on, and clipped a whopper plopper to it, but my whopper plopper wouldn't ever spin right, it's nose was below the water. I thought it might have been my line, 30lb braid.. was it the braid, the snap, or just a bad whopper plopper??
It could be the snap is just a little too heavy . With a steady retrieval line wouldn’t matter ( braid floats so it wouldn’t have a negative effect) or it could be a defective bait . Try a different plopper see if the same thing happens
@Oldbasshole I only had one plopper, mightve been a Berkley, I can't remember.. but the only time it "plopped" was when there was a straight, tight line from the rod tip to the plopper.. I even tried 2 different buzz baits, the $1.50 Ozark Trail ones at walmart.. I think you're right, must be a heavy snap, altho it's pretty small (don't know what size it is..) thanks !
Tiny duo locks. Same/less weight, works better. 😉
I saw the title and thought, “what a silly video”. Anyway, thanks for the reminder. This really hit home.
I would add a 4th thing: Always leave an 1/8" tag end so that if you have any line/knot slip you don't come loose.
Tyler, do you recommend replacing split rings with oval split rings on all hard baits? Thanks for all you do. Awesome channel.
I want to talk about the worst thing... there are 3 really bad things.
Sounds like you don't really understand how to get your ideas across to someone else.
First thing you say is nonsense.
I've definitely learned this on my own the hard way. The line will always land between the split cuz it's the lowest point. That's why I like that googan puts oval split rings
You want the hook to easily scratch your finger nails, and sometimes hooks out of the box are not sharp enough. I recommend a hook sharpener.
Had to find this out the hard way as a new angler last year. I knew my knots were good but i would get the fish to the bank and while im reaching to grab it kwould get a shake from the fish and off goes the fish with my bait. Now the fish is swimming around the lake with a crankbait hanging from its mouth
I use swivels for expediency of change, and I usually connect to the nose eyelet and remove those snap rings. I don't normally use polymer knots on crankbaits due to the step where you have to run the loop over the bait to the opposite side before you pull the knot tight. You mentioned test your hook points, that usually happens when I am running the bait through the loop. I've started using the jam knot since it did so well in your test video. What is your opinion of using swivels? I haven't noticed any problems with how the bait runs through the water. My only concern is how tough are they when it comes to landing a fish.
I too have learned about bad knots...the hard way! You're absolutely right: cut and tie 'em again.
Norman speed clips!
The palomar is a good knot but it is the easiest to tie wrong. You can never let the layers twist over each other. That’s how you lose the strength. Just tie the fishin fool like Tyler showed us😉
What do you think about using speed clips?
Use Owner welded snaps in a size 0 and a size 1
I thought it was about gloves
Dir dont drink paint it will kill you
A clip tied on , no problems
I have removed all split rings on my cranks and other hard baits and use a norman speed clip for the last 25+ years. And now you have given me another reason I have made a good decision.👍
Don’t waste time taking the split ring off. Just attach the speed clip to the split ring. 👍🏼
@@TyRobbinsI've had the split rings pull apart before and ever since then is when I eliminated the split rings and using snaps, but there's always what works best for the angler
Good video. Especially with prespawn coming in! 😎👍🎣💪🔨🏆
I always take the split ring off of all my baits, just so unnecessary
With the way you set a hook, sharp hook matter! Your driving that thing home! 😂 Haha!
Never had an issue with split rings in 30+ years of bass fishing
I know a fellow fisherman he more than a few times ran his line. through the guide stands ,just one of them always forgets his glasses!
lock snap fix
Get rid of split rings and start using snaps is what I have done and work's great
Best advice you just gave me . 💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼🔥👍
@@rogermendez7266 👍
The worst mistake you can make when tying on a lure....Is tying on a lure. Use a snap, or a TA clip. Only the tiniest of lures, flies, and tiny live bait hooks, need to be tied on, IMO. And don't even get me started on those stupid, weak ass loop knots.
Loop knots don’t belong outside of panfishing….. or in it….😂
Use a solid ring off the split ring. Simple. 😊
Use swivel.
Wet your knots or you just burned your line
Can you test the best dropshot knots please?
Good simple tip to everyone buddy
I cut the rings off every lure I buy
Ask kvd and Lee sisson about your split ring theory and they’ll tell you otherwise. Kvd always ties to the crotch and the reason is if the crotch is towards the bait it can cause the bait to track untrue. Lee sisson says the same thing and he built all of bagleys best crankbaits all tank tested .
Well they are a lot better fisherman than myself but this is just my experience
Best snaps anyone would recommend?
Gamakatsu Hyper EZ snap. Best.
I was the 100th like btw!!!!!
Great video 📹 👍
Speed clip
So every video you talk about Finn Fishing and that it’s name after your son but we have never meet the superstar himself….
Well it is one if my sons. Maybe I’ll bring him in at some point
I would caution doing so and I would say to keep kids out of videos. Plenty of examples on UA-cam as to what stupid issues arise when they are.
Sharp hooks feel like they have pine sap on them. They immediately stick to you fingers. That’s how I judge a bait when I take it out of the package. God help you if you drop the bait on your pants or tennis shoes.
Scratch your fingernail
@@paulkipfmiller5182 I never thought of that. Thank you!
You betcha it works good if it digs into your thumbnail it's sharp. If it glides across it, it's dull
Great tips!
Great tips
Would it be ok to remove the split ring and tie a loop knot directly to the loop on the lure?
Use a snap or an oval ring. Most lures that come with a ring need it to have the right action. Tying direct impedes it. Baits like these wear out loop style knot quickly as well.
@@tacticalnali1206 i have a couple ultra light small like jerkbaits or crank baits and they dont have a split ring i have just been using the loop knot. i didnt think about it wearing through the line though from just rubbing on it that is a good point
I had a year when I switch over to using braided line when the knot would always come loose.
I started using the Palomar knot on braided line and don't lose any fish at all because the knot gives out anymore.
I started using snaps last season. allows me to switch baits fast and havnt really noticed a difference in how cranks swim.
What knot do you use on a buzz bait?
I have lost so many buzz baits snapping off while casting.
Use fluorocarbon with a double San Diego jam or pitzner. Fluorocarbon doesn't have time to sink with a constant retrieve and will give a little stretch so you're not ripping the buzzbait out of its mouth. Wait till you feel weight on the line and pull back firmly to set the hook.
I use to use 20lb fluoro back in the day and never had issues with breaking off fish. Like the guy above said, fluoro isn’t going to effect your bait because your are constantly moving it. Recently I have switched to 30lb straight braid just because if I can get away with it…why not
I always put a little spit on the knot before I pull it tight
Oval split rings are definitely the way to go snaps work too but you definitely have to buy good ones
