I'm 14 years old and I've always been fascinated by the brain. I have complete hope and knowledge in the area. Not as much but I hope but I will learn more when I reach college and go deeper into anatomy in Senior year of high school and become a neurosurgeon because I want to help people. @@sara215 Women generally do not tend to gravitate towards such high effort specialties. We get 1 application by a woman for every 40 men. It is also very likely for a woman to take time off for pregnancy and their children. Women also generally are not as driven, ambitious and hard working than most men. Women actually earn at least as much as their male counterparts when all other aspects are equal (no children, no part time, equal participation, working experience, qualifications and working hours). Accepting the application by a man over that of a woman involves less risk and more potential reward. There are female outliers who prove the rule, but they are easily screened in interviews and will have the same, if not better, career options than men.
None of you obviously read the description. She's also right , there's a lot mental strength that has to be present when going through schooling, whether man or woman. It's just a matter of how the different genders view themselves in their practice.

Great talk! As a woman and medical student I can see where she is coming from. She has studied and practiced in a field that is not that welcoming to women. If you, as a man offended by this video it just goes to show the importance of women of her stature speaking in platforms like these. As a 14 year old female with a very big interest in neurosurgery, this video propelled my confidence in pursuing this field. I've noticed that while doing my research on this topic, all of the information is delivered by men, this is the first time I've come across a woman talking like this. I'm very grateful, as I did make this connection before she pointed out how this is a male dominated work force. I am now more passionate and determined than ever to make my way as a neurosurgeon. Lauren Ramsey at the moment there are only 3,000 practicing neurosurgeons in the U.S. Chances are you won't make it. How far along are you in the process? You will need to match into a good med school, then do well in your exams. Then match into a good and competitive residency. Most people want to do neurosurgery but will drop out when they realize what is actually required, otherwise it would be a supersaturated field.

I'm extremely thankful for this talk, mostly for the last part. This is the problem, that face most of the female doctors, espacially surgeons and espacially in such men-dominated specializations. These are just the problems I'm facing at the moment: feeling not fitting in, thinking it's impossible to cope neurosurgery with family life and asking myself if I'm strong/smart/skilled enough. Now I see I'm not the only one and that every women in neurosurgery went through these thoughts. That video gives strength, thank you once more. Huge thumb up!
Dr. Pilitsis gave a wonderful, important presentation. The wisdom she imparted is for everyone interested in living an insightful, respectful, integrated existence. Most of her presentation informed us about what research tells us about diversity, higher education and success. She used the framework of her specialty which is neurosurgery. Occasionally, she provided us with her opinion and sometimes she shared her experience. Well done. I am saddened by the listeners who were not able to see the importance of her presentation. The title of the TED talk is just fine if you believe that this information is for everyone.
I'm fifteen and I love dealing with the brain and nerves. I want to be a neurosurgeon not for the money nor for the fame. But because it is a passion and I am willing to cry, stress, breakdown and pick myself up because of it. It is a goal that I'm not ready to give up. Not in this lifetime

The foundation of practicing medicine isn't really the didactic, but the connection between practitioner and patient, as well as providers and their peers. It's easy to want to segregate the people who perform, from the work itself. "I wanted to watch a video about neurosurgery, not a woman talking about feminism." There's a chasm there. People don't become doctors without help. You won't get in unless people, your peers, your mentors, think you're good enough. That's a social aspect that people not in that path don't think about. If you want to learn about neurosurgery, read a book. There's a host of texts on surgical procedure. If you want to learn about being a neurosurgeon, to be a part of a community, to be part of a team, to be part of a healthcare system, watch this video again.

Huge thumbs up. Essentially, we all have a brain and we are capable of doing anything. This was truly inspiring to watch. I admired the fact that she didn't bash on men...she doesn't even like the term "feminism". This just shows that no matter who you are, you are able.

No one would have a problem with that if the title indicated that it's to encourage women, as opposed to people in general. The title implies that ANYONE who wants to be a neurosurgeon should watch this vid. I, like many others, was looking for a video about the pros and cons of the field and it was surprisingly hard to find a video longer than 3 minutes on what it's all about. Finally, I come across this 17 minute video and think wonderful, this should be a little more in depth, but no, Most of it is explaining that not enough women are in neurosurgery. I will say some good points were made though. Particularly when she said that children look at books and there's 6 biographies for men for every 1 for women and this is what kid's see in school. As someone who thought if women want a job, they shouldn't need to be encouraged, they'll just go for it, I now see that there probably is a need to get the ball rolling so the new generation doesn't feel that stem fields aren't their place because of their gender.

I myself was victim of a spinal cord tumor and know the feeling of being helpless and told you are going to die. My surgeon gave me my life back and I want to do the same for others now.
Assuming you go to college at 18, you will have to go there for 4 years to get your Bachelor's. So then you will be 22. After that, you go to medical school for 4 years. Then you will be 26. After that is residency for 7 years. After residency, you will be 33. You will not be a neurosurgeon at 28. She messed up because she said primary and secondary education take 13 years when they actually take 18. She's honestly not the sharpest pitchfork.

You do not go to school for 28 years - you go (went) to school for 16 years. The 12 years of kinder through high school is what everyone goes through. I’m also a doctor, and I never include my public school education as the number of years I went to school, and I often downplay how long it took me to finish. Also, the Association of American Medical Colleges themselves have performed research and discovered that women are underrepresented in most areas of medicine which require the longest training and the worst and longest working hours (neuro being among the most intense). Their follow-up research showed the reason is because women in their 30’s often have a strong biological desire to have children, and having children doesn’t align with 70+ hour work weeks. This idea that women aren’t more represented in neuro due to male discrimination is ridiculous. You either choose to be a mother and adopt a career or field of medicine which aligns with your family goals, or you let that go and work in a field like neuro.

I am pretty sure that they came to that data by proportion, like they took the cases of sued women and divided by the total of women neurosurgeon and did the same for men, and after that they saw that the proportion of sued/total was higher in the men neurosurgeon case

People just watch these videos and immediately think "I want to be a surgeon or doctor". Though to be a surgeon you need to be intelligent and excel in high school. It's not our fault that people want to write a biographies about us! Just because there is more biographies about men doesn't mean it's biased against women, maybe it's because a lot of men can do great things and have done great things!
I think it’s good to give other people a basis and general understanding of being a female neurosurgeon and providing us with her perspective but “how to keep women in neurosurgery” like? Stop. Just continue talking about the career and your experiences. People that pursue neurology are passionate in that topic. If more men are passionate about it, then? Encourage people to pursue their interests, not establish the differences between the two genders, unless it’s extremely significant. Women will come into the field if they want to.
Everyone in neurosurgery was educated 28 years oof learning and training. Women or men no difference. She talks how to be hard is to be a femine neurosurgeons:-).I supposed to get more advice about neurosurgery residency in U.S and working as neurosurn in U.S. Each of us must still improve knowledge and operative technique skill. I would have preferred her to footnote the sexual bias within the field and focused more on the overall rigors of neurosurgery. i was really interested in learning more about that parkinson's treatment and then she switched gears to being completely about the gender disparity in surgeons. While important, i wish this focused more on the stresses and successes of surgeons overall.

If you listened to the whole thing, she says she hates the term feminist and she doesn't want that term. If anything, she's not one because a lot of stereotypical remarks were made about women and men. True feminists aren't like that.

I will say some good points were made though. Particularly when she said that children look at books and there's 6 biographies for men for every 1 for women and this is what kid's see in school. As someone who thought if women want a job, they shouldn't need to be encouraged, they'll just go for it, I now see that there probably is a need to get the ball rolling so the new generation doesn't feel that stem fields aren't their place because of their gender.

I myself was victim of a spinal cord tumor and know the feeling of being helpless and told you are going to die. My surgeon gave me my life back and I want to do the same for others now.

Assuming you go to college at 18, you will have to go there for 4 years to get your Bachelor's. So then you will be 22. After that, you go to medical school for 4 years. Then you will be 26. After that is residency for 7 years. After residency, you will be 33. You will not be a neurosurgeon at 28. She messed up because she said primary and secondary education take 13 years when they actually take 18. She's honestly not the sharpest pitchfork.

You do not go to school for 28 years - you go (went) to school for 16 years. The 12 years of kinder through high school is what everyone goes through. I’m also a doctor, and I never include my public school education as the number of years I went to school, and I often downplay how long it took me to finish. Also, the Association of American Medical Colleges themselves have performed research and discovered that women are underrepresented in most areas of medicine which require the longest training and the worst and longest working hours (neuro being among the most intense). Their follow-up research showed the reason is because women in their 30’s often have a strong biological desire to have children, and having children doesn’t align with 70+ hour work weeks. This idea that women aren’t more represented in neuro due to male discrimination is ridiculous. You either choose to be a mother and adopt a career or field of medicine which aligns with your family goals, or you let that go and work in a field like neuro.

People just watch these videos and immediately think "I want to be a surgeon or doctor". Though to be a surgeon you need to be intelligent and excel in high school. If you can't spell properly then you have no chance of getting into medical school.

I think it’s good to give other people a basis and general understanding of being a female neurosurgeon and providing us with her perspective but “how to keep women in neurosurgery” like? Stop. Just continue talking about the career and your experiences. People that pursue neurology are passionate in that topic. If more men are passionate about it, then? Encourage people to pursue their interests, not establish the differences between the two genders, unless it’s extremely significant. Women will come into the field if they want to.

I would have preferred her to footnote the sexual bias within the field and focused more on the overall rigors of neurosurgery. i was really interested in learning more about that parkinson's treatment and then she switched gears to being completely about the gender disparity in surgeons. While important, i wish this focused more on the stresses and successes of surgeons overall.
