My experience is that in-stream ads targeted through placement on similar artist's music videos result in views with a high retention rate (above 60%). Clickbaiting users into clicking your display ad will result in a low retention rate, as the users stop watching the video after 10 seconds when they find out it's not the most brutal music video at all. Retention rate is the most important metric, if it's low, youtube won't recommend your video.
Archie Bald hey. So in stream ads really work? I’ve always heard people say that it just brings empty views with no engagement I.e the discussion I was having with CrackaLack below?
I had the same exact problem. I started with in stream ads and struck gold with a couple videos even though the views were absurdly high compared to the engagement, but I still got lots of engagement nonetheless. However when I tried display ads, it doesn't make sense. Apparently I got an abundance of engagement like crazy, more and more subs, but then I saw my watch time and it said 16%. It’s a sad time when asking people for 3 minutes of their time is like asking for an arm and a leg because we have so many things competing for our attention..
Have you ever become a fan of someone's music when they threw it in your face and said "Please listen to my music it'll only take 3 minutes of your time!"? I doubt it. Begging someone for attention only makes people uncomfortable. If your music is good, it will find its audience. Sometimes it takes years - pay attention to the dates next time you listen to a Spotify playlist. Most of the songs aren't new, they're usually released around 2014-2018. Remember that no one is in a rush to hear your music, because they don't know it exists yet. The only thing you can do is keep making quality stuff, and hope it finds people when they are open to hearing something new. Abrasive ads are jarring, casually coming across something is the way most people enjoy discovering new music, which is why placing an ad as a search result can be effective.

Thanks for this FANTASTIC guide - it helped a lot for my first time dropping a few bucks on an ad for a music video. Do you possibly have another video or other information that gives guidance on average rates of return on the ads? I only have a couple days of data in on my first campaign and trying to determine if the view rate (55%) is decent, the view duration (about 2.20 of a 3 minute song) is decent etc. Thx for any direction - keep up the great programming!
So useful as usual ! We've come to the same conclusion, as in-streams ads were just bringing "empty views" for the most part and were not very useful in the long run to establish a connection with real fans.Just a question: is there any utility to put the same keywords in your ad as the tags you chose for your video when uploading it (for example "new indie music 2019", etc.) ?
HAVE A SONG WITH 1 MILLION STREAMS ON SPOTIFY , HALF A MILLION VIEWS THROUGH INSTREAM ADS AND NOT ONE(!) SINGLE COMMENT, NO LIKES, NO DISLIKES, CAN SOMEBODY EXPLAIN ME THIS PHENOMEN? I HEARD THE WORD EMPTY VIEWS HERE.IS THIS IT?
Thank you sooo much for this! Ive been doing my ads wrong this whole time for my music. I have a new music video coming out soon and I really feel like it will do good now because of your tips!
With the "Click Bait" campaign, would you say that it's effective? I feel as though people won't click because it says Ad right below it. I'm assuming the common person does not want to watch an ad.

@@andreahamilton What About New Subscribers & Engagement?
@@ZimMill 200-250 new subs and like 6-10 comments from it...
@@andreahamilton Last Question I Promise: Can I Do This From My IPhone? Or Do I Have To Be On A PC To Create Ads?
Thai insight is amazing. Thank you for sharing.
Can we add similar sounding artists for the Keywords section? If so, how many and how big should the audience reach # stay around?

Good question I was wandering
With in stream ads, do you get a view after every time someone watches 5 seconds or do they need to watch more than that for you to get a view?
They need to watch for 30secs before it counts as a view
Free Keys 5-6 seconds is a view 30 seconds or more is a stream
You can do a campaign for $5, so just try it. People will click just based on your title even if it says "Ad."
I’m studying everything!!! I am tuned in! Ask and you shall receive💯🪐
!!!!THIS IS SO GREAT AND INSPIRATIONAL!!!
!i hope everyone is well and is keeping a positive outlook and always creating and evolving \XXXX/
