    Damian has some great ideas. Another good way to connect is through UA-cam, comment sections like this one. Comment on other artists' work and meet their fans. Start conversations and then ask them if they would listen to your new songs and comment on them. It takes a long time to attract subscribers this way, but it is a personal way of connecting with possible fans. (Of course, a lot of men try to pick me up, but I am honest with them right off the bat. They usually take it well.) Good luck, everyone!

    • @RicardoNevesMusic
      @RicardoNevesMusic 2 роки тому +1

      I think the best way to get people to hear your stuff is to actually not think or talk about it, and instead, trying to help someone out there as best as you can, just like you would do with a friend. I think it then becomes more about asking yourself the question: "how can I impact or change the world", which is more inspiring/motivating than saying: "how can I promote this?". This can really change your perspective and how people can perceive and engage with your music.

    • @gwynnielsen5081
      @gwynnielsen5081 2 роки тому

      @@RicardoNevesMusic This is true. I think most artists have both in mind, though: the artistic, altruistic sense and the business sense. To succeed, you need to address both. I find that relatable lyrics have power, especially today. Shared experience opens ears and emotions. In my songs, it is obvious that I am wearing my heart on my sleeve. Writing for me and many others out there is therapy. Listening could wind up being therapy for others. Good therapy brings positive change. :)

      @@officialWWM I agree. I guess that's why they sell tickets on their site to the show, sell alcohol at the bar, and require a $ amount sold in by each local. Most people will say they have more overhead, and yeah, I would agree. Meanwhile making music isn't cheap either. Don't waste your time with gigs till you can garauntee ticket sales. Instead, use the internet. UA-cam, ig, facebook, twitter. Make fans now. The internet gives us a much larger reach than a venue, for a fraction of the price.

    • @officialWWM
      @officialWWM 4 роки тому +15

      @@WillieTheAutomaton that's true but playing live is fun and that's why I play music! I'm a booking agent/promotor and I'm sympathetic to bands needs but at the end of the day, bums on seats is how we all pay the bills. My advice to a band with no fan base or pulling power is to get on the bill with a band who does sell tickets, the bring your A game and blow people away! If you can do that, you will be selling tickets in no time!

    • @WillieTheAutomaton
      @WillieTheAutomaton 4 роки тому +5

      @@officialWWM you're a booking agent / promotor? That would make sense why your suggestion is to get people to play live when they have no fan base to sell tickets to. "Get on with a band that sells tickets" that doesn't help them. That band is going on at the end of the night when everyone is there. Mainly because no one is going to show up until it's time for them to go on. Meanwhile there band that got on the show because band X sells tickets, plays to an empty floor, or maybe a few of the other bands members and their merch person. It's not worth it.

    I like this a lot! I feel like so many artists are stuck here, but after years of hacking away and what has seemed like very slow progress I have learned exactly what you said that VALUE is key. Also that momentum builds over time (like the A to A 1/2 concept), it snowballs over time if you stay consistent and constantly add value. A deep connection with one fan is better than shallow connections with 1,000 fans.

    Thanks for these tips Damo, it comes at the perfect time for us about to release a second single and putting a LOT of pressure on ourselves to promote it as much as possible to an "empty room". There were some great ideas in the 20 day plan video and I like the idea of spreading the content with behind the scenes + audio release + music video + track video to keep the momentum going. This video makes me realise that as a new artist those strategies that the major labels are employing can only be scaled back so far. Though I enjoy the element of fake it till you make it and getting into good marketing/self promotion habits right from the start I'm going to get it all out at once and use it to raise awareness post release.

    I lost my mom earlier this year. She was a single mother of 4 boys and really passionate about music. She was always really supportive of me playing on a drum kit every day after school. Even if she needed to get sleep for her night job, she would tell me "Wait 5 minutes and I'll be asleep and then you can start playing." Sure enough every time, 5 minutes shed be asleep and Id start banging on the drums for 45 min straight. Id check to make sure I didnt wake her and every time she'd be in a deep asleep.
    Anyway I feel I turned my back on music composition for the last 15 years going thru life up until losing her. As a way to process my feelings thru grieving I started producing music in a DAW and its been incredibly fulfilling up to this point. I honestly found myself again and I can still thank her for that.

It feels so nice to finally be putting this out there and I'm very happy with how the recording process is coming along so far. One of my songs that is gojng on this EP was written in 2013 but hasn't yet seen the light of day because I've always allowed others or myself to get in my way. But I set the deadline this time and I'm really doing it. I've got albums of songs ready to go and I'm very excited to hopefully resonate with some people. 🖤

      Damian Keyes no worries mate. I’m one of the lucky ones. I already earn a living from playing doing covers at weddings and stuff and it took a long time to get here but I know I’m my heart, I can’t do covers forever. Gotta keep writing and trying my own stuff. For me, the covers is my day job and my original material is my passion. So time to up the grind on that side of things a bit more.
      The chapter about ‘the power of free’ really struck a chord because that’s how we did it to start yet now, when I’m starting again for some reason my brain didn’t reset and I guess I kind of expected to be paid what I normally do when it’s not realistic to expect that. Or at least not yet. So I guess I’ve got to up the grind and get my head down again. So thanks for talking some sense into my arrogant ass because I guess I needed it.

    Thanks Damian! This was what I needed to see. I've finished a song and video after a long hiatus from the music industry. I was on Sony and Warner Chappel Australia years ago and released 2 albums. After touring and promotion for 5 years I ran into legal problems and eventually left my career. I have kept writing but just lived my life for several years. Friends have encouraged me and helped me do some music on my own recently but things have changed so much with technology and social media. Listening to this video clarified for me that I should just put the video on UA-cam and sign up with CD baby then go from there. So thank you. Very much appreciate your channel.

    Well, I might already have a fanbase of 3 people, but damn it's hard to get your music heard. I think the key to grow your audience is consistency. Once you have a lot to offer people will take you more serious as an artist :)

    • @redcurrantrecords
      @redcurrantrecords 2 роки тому

      You did the right thing by adding a video on your UA-cam profile, and Spotify link, this is simple thing, then do some good comments on other people's videos you might get some more view. It takes time, keep writing and try to release some more songs or versions of existing songs, something every 3-6 months if you can. Keep going, I know how hard it was to get those Spotify listeners, but that is over half way to 100.
