  • This 2023 update to route A will take you as close as you can get to the active volcanic eruption in Litli Hrútur near Fagradalsfjall in Iceland.
    I recorded the whole hike with my GoPro strapped to my chest. It sure wasn't easy. But I was determined. Last time I failed to get close enough to the volcano to get my dream drone shot. This time I was determined to get it even if it meant hiking 20 kilometers (12.5 miles).
    Was it worth it? Click to find out.
    You can check out this video to watch the whole timelapse uninterrupted in 4K without commentary. I said it was unlisted in the video but I figure I would make it public. Why not.

    Please don't use it in your own videos without talking with me first.
    I recorded my hike back on Strava if you want to geek out over the stats. The hike back was much more difficult. / strava
    Check out safetravel.is/ for details on how to stay safe in Iceland with an impending volcanic eruption.

    thank you for the Video. We were there on the 22nd of July. We did trail E first and were just as disappointed as in your first video, so we did trail A right after. It was very tiring in the end but totally worth it. The moment when you first see the volcano, which is only 500m away, is definitely worth the hike. Remember to bring warm clothes. Don't dress too warm for the hike, you will sweat. But then you should stay at least 3-4h and enjoy the volcano. Then it suddenly gets cold ;)
    I really love your videos since our first visit of Iceland in May 2023

      Awesome thank you! Just my experience too. And judging by the distance meter in the drone which is quite accurate I estimate that you are sitting closer to 400 meters away from the crater. Which is insane to think about 😱😊

    Beautiful video and such a stunning view! Are you able to recommend which (presumably active) craters to hike to around late September? Hoping to visit later this year

      Thank you 😊 fortunately and unfortunately there are no active eruptions at the moment. And the ones that have been active recent weeks have been closed to public because they are too dangerous to visit.

    Awesome video and footage! I went on the same path a few days ago and I can say I completely agree with you, the views are definitely worth the hike :D If there's one thing that confused me a lot, though, is that the end of trail A that leads to Litli Hrútur is now listed as a hazardous zone on safetravel, and there are some area closed signs at that point in the trail. When I was there, safetravel was only talking about trail E. However, when I visited and from what I heard from other people recently, even though it is listed as a hazard zone, ICE-SAR seems to be present and aren't telling people to stay away. Do you have any information regarding this? I'm pretty confused myself and would be curious to know. Either way, keep up the great videos!

    • @TimeWarpIceland
      @TimeWarpIceland  11 місяців тому +1

      They were turning people away if the went to close into the valley or if they tried to walk any further. Mostly out of concern for gases. I'm confused by this too. But the hazard zone is where there could potentially open uo new fizzires and theu don't seem to concerned about that. I suppose because it doesn't really happen that fast.

    • @pink.unicorn
      @pink.unicorn 11 місяців тому

      @@TimeWarpIceland I see, we were quite confused when we arrived at the area closed signs as well. We definitely wanted to follow regulations and we didn't want to get ourselves in a hazardous position, but at the same time especially since we had seen an ICE-SAR quad heading up the trail during the initial incline, it didn't seem like the trail was closed. Either way, people kept coming and ignoring the signs, so we eventually decided to go past them a little to see for ourselves what was the situation down there. Very rapidly, we saw the ICE-SAR quad we had seen earlier heading back from what appeared to be the bottom of Litli Hrútur. They didn't say anything to anyone, nor did they give any indication we were in an area we shouldn't be in. That's when we decided to hike up all the way to the top of Litli Hrútur. On our way back, we saw other quads that once again didn't give any indications of a potential danger which, considering the newest update on safetravel, is rather confusing. I'm guessing they're either trying to discourage people from taking it because they're concerned about the much higher difficulty of the trail compared to path E, or they're concerned about potential hazards like a new fissure or moss fires trapping people beyond the old end of the trail. Of course, if we had been told by ICE-SAR that it wasn't safe, we would've turned back. I also wouldn't have hiked up there if the new update on safetravel had been posted before we left on the trail. However, this wasn't the case, so we had no way of knowing. Either way, I do find it quite confusing as well and would love to find out the exact reasoning behind all of this. Although, I don't think many people know besides ICE-SAR and police. Also, you've gained yourself a new subscriber :)

    • @TimeWarpIceland
      @TimeWarpIceland  11 місяців тому +1

      Awesome thank you. Yea I agree it is a bit confusing. And I think it is literally just because they are figuring it out as they go. Trying their best to keep the places people want to go open while keeping them away from danger when they dedect gases. It's amazing to me thst they do this because the easy thing to do wouldn't be to just close the area no exceptions. I'll try to find out. Perhaps it would make for an interesting interview in a future video.

    • @pink.unicorn
      @pink.unicorn 11 місяців тому

      @@TimeWarpIceland Thanks for your insight on this! It is indeed quite amazing that they're letting people come and see the volcano, while in many other places in the world, everything would probably be closed off until the eruption comes to its end. Like you said, they're trying to keep visitors in a safe place in this dynamic and uncertain environment, which inevitably creates some confusion and sudden changes. If you do get the chance to do an interview on this later on, though, I think it would be a great future video. It could also be incredibly helpful to lots of people, since everyone seems to be quite confused by all of this as well.

    Nice work, I took the easy way. For the cost of less than a drone, I went with the helicopter and didn't waste a full day of my iceland vacation. After traveling all around the country and seeing No drone signs everywhere I would have wanted to use a drone, I am happy with my choice.

    Excellent info! I have a funny question though...drinking that much water, would we have any way of taking a piss along the way ? And is the total distance 20 kilometers to and fro ? How long did it take you in total?

    • @TimeWarpIceland
      @TimeWarpIceland  11 місяців тому +1

      Well the volcano is not active anymore. Although the hike is still stunning. Atleast half of it. It is 10 kilometers each way. So 20 total. And you sweat everything you drink. At least we did. 😅 But, it's Iceland. Nobody cares if you pee behind a rock. Just don't do number 2. 😊

    How much time did it take round trip.? Asking because I have a 10 hour layover in Iceland dat after tomorrow. Seeing if I can attempt it.

    • @TimeWarpIceland
      @TimeWarpIceland  11 місяців тому

      That is doable. As long as you have 10 hours to spare. The whole trip took me 10 hours coming from Reykjavik. The walk it self was 6 hours. 5 hours 30 minutes moving time. Unless you are very experienced then you will be very tired. Don't underestimate the need for food and water. I could not imagine having to go through check in and customs and all that after my hike. I went home, had a beer and lay down on the sofa. I can still feel some stiffness 4 days later.

      Yes, when I was a kid, maybe 6-7 I was convinced this was a volcano because it looked like one from Donald Duck. Just perfect. But the adults, including my dad (guy in the yellow jacket) told me with no uncertainty that it was not a volcano and I didn't believe them. Guess who was right.
