He eventually did form a family over time with his gang and seeing Dutch as like a father though overtime but deep down he was still a gunman at heart. Does he like killing people? No I dont think he does he mainly uses it for self defense and growing up in gang of outcasts and outlaws can really change a man like himself. Say what u want about John but even he has morals especially against hurting women let alone children so hes not completely heartless unlike Dutch who will kill basically anybody even innocent women and I dont doubt in RDR1 he wouldnt hesitate to kill a child as hes basically lost his mind at that point.
