I really like how R* portrayed both the Mexican army and the rebels as ruthless. In most games the rebels are always portrayed as noble which isn't always the case irl.
In terms of Jack's fate, I like to go with the theory that after killing Edgar, he did end up being a writer and wrote a book on John's story called "Red Dead". This is based on the "Red Dead" book written by J. Marston that you can see in GTA V in Franklin's book collection
Agreed. I personally think that too many people started taking the *"Jack becomes an outlaw"* possibility as definitive after RDR2 when it was always an open-ended ending. I think given Jack's lack of interest in the gunslinging life and more in becoming a writer or lawyer and the fact that it's the early 20th century and one can go into hiding easier that he hung up his guns, took care of the ranch and became a writer.
@@themadtitan7603 personally I agree with the interpretation of Jack the outlaw, But only on the precondition that the federal agents figure out that one of their own was killed by Jack Marston. You don't just get the walk away from that and write a novel, and it would be a more fitting theme towards the cycle of violence and redemption Something Red Dead redemption executed far better than the last of Us 2 because of choice. it definitely feels like the book in GTAV was added to make people feel good about the ending and that it wasn't completely a pointless story (to some) but you don't have to kill Edgar. Though it did feel very satisfying doing it
@@Christmas_Johan People got away with murder all the time back then. Government officials too. Even in modern times it can happen. Just because it seems narratively appropriate to you doesn't mean it's the most likely outcome.
@@bandit6272 fun fact of the day clearance rates for murders have actually gone down since the 50s, though demographic variables exist Although pre forensics & fingerprinting/DNA early 20th century I couldn't tell you what the clearance rate was. Though with the way Jack Marston went about investigating Edgar its very possible he does get found out, especially considering tracking Edgar down consistent of talking to federal agents and Edgar's wife. Though an argument could be made that Edgar's selfishness regarding credit within the bureau for John's death could've ultimately prevented investigation into Edgar. Which would be kinda fitting The same could easily be said about your interpretation of the ending. I just happen to find mine more thematically appropriate if Jack didn't perpetuate revenge.
Always love that even though uncle is seen as lazy he stands with John to defend the ranch without any complaint, really shows his care for John,Abigail and jack
I’ve only seen my husband tear up 4 times. When his dad died, when our 2 daughters were born, and when playing red dead redemption 2. I don’t play them, but I sit and watch him play like I’m watching a movie. They are masterpieces.
I once saw a glitch in my game that traded the bird's model with an old man. I thought it was just an old man standing on a roof but when I shot at it, it lifted its legs to its butt and flapped his arms away. Wildest memory from the game.
Yeah, that was pretty uncommon but not impossible. I had an instance where a horses model was replaced with a nun, and you can bet that I made that my trusty steed.
Here’s a fun fact: John meeting with the Strange Man where he is buried also symbolizes who died at the end. The 3 shots he fired at the Strange Man represent Uncle, Abigail and John while when his gun jams, it represents Jack and how he’s the last one alive.
The Strange Man also claims when John says "damn you" that "many have" implying that he might me God disguising himself amongst people. This would explain how he knows so much about John and why the bullets have no effect on him. He fires the three shots damning himself, Uncle, and Abigail while the fourth jams and spares Jacks life.
in 4-5 playthroughs over 5 years, i just came across one of my favourite random encounters for the first time. in Tall Trees, a couple of guys are finishing up loading crates of TNT onto a cart, and one of them will say something along the lines of "whew, that about does it, i feel like a cigar, you got a light?", the other will strike a match, and they'll both go up in a comically HUGE explosion.
It's crazy seeing how connected they are, if you look up an interview on UA-cam of how he got into voice acting John, it's about ten minutes long, you can see some very close similarities between him and the character he voices.
I love dutch's death so much. The way he says, "this one's a good one" then jumps, it's like a moment of clarity before the end, Dutch is faced with a choice, him or John, and before now you can easily be forgiven for forgetting that Dutch essentially raised John as a son, but in the end, he makes the choice any father would for his son.
Another cool detail. If you skin animals that can only be found in New Austin and sell them in Mexico, they are worth 1.5x or 2x times more. Basically contraband. This, among other details, are the reasons I replayed the game several times
it was one the best game online was better back then of all times was fun use to make my own game defend the castle in free mode in the mexion fort we would all split up into teams attackers vs defenders it was more fun the cannons where fun doom was the ps4 was trash then psn plus is not free
Tbh, it was probably meant as a literal gameplay element along with how real it would be in the setting. Wanna make money? Travel further for rarer pelts and sell them back to the places that'd have the hardest time getting them. It's the basis for a lot of market systems in games since ages.
When playing as Jack you can hear him make a lot of one-liners when in a shootout, but he says things like, “why am I doing this?” when you kill someone and things like that. It’s been 3 years since John was killed and it’s clear that Jack has already started down the path of the outlaw. It’s only when he kills Ross that his fate is sealed. Outlaws to the end.
Hearing you talk about how amazing it is when you encounter different dialogue when replaying a scene is wild because Red Dead 2 takes it a step further and has the added effect of characters talking or shouting depending on how far away from them you are or how loud the surroundings are. This game is incredible in every way, but 2 still somehow manages to expand on the detail and immersion on all fronts. I can’t wait for the second review. Thanks for dropping this video!
i played rdr1 directly after rdr2 a couple years ago. i was surprised just how well it held up after 10 years of unbelievably rapid technological advancements. i still go back and forth between rdr1 and rdr2 as my favorite in the series.
Yeah I played both. It's a tossup for me too. I would say RDR1 has a better soundtrack. Both Marston and Morgan are badass. Morgan is just goofy sometimes.
Honestly, if you disregard the 8 or something years graphical dating between the two releases, the graphics are actually really really nice looking for coming out in the middle of the 360 era. Many places are super distinguishable regardless of if they're in RDR1 or 2.
RDR1 is still pretty broken. Legend has it that they rushed pushing the game out and released it before it was finished in typical rockstar fashion and they didn’t even have live updates back then
@@Caboose858 what are u on? rdr1 runs fine. and it wasnt rushed. rockstar spent 5+ years making rdr1. if thats rushed to u, then i would hate to see what timely game development is in ur eyes.
I met the man who played John at a comic con in Kansas City. His name is Rob Wiethoff and he is an absolute gentleman. Same goes for Roger Clark, who played Arthur in RDR2. Both men are nothing short of the nicest men I’ve ever met.
@@F2t0ny Yeah. It’s unbelievable how these two men have both performed as two of the most iconic video game characters there are but this is like, the only thing they’ve done.
@brax7152 too iconic/don't want to I'd guess you would be playing something like gears of war, then just hearing John Marston saying to protect the queen
RDR1 has a special place in my heart, i was 11 when it came out and I would watch my dad play it as a kid. He’d tell me what he did in game and update me if he did something or found something new, he’d let me run around Tall Trees and I’d go hunting in game for bears since I was too scared to ruin his game or do missions. When RDR2 came out, we both played it and this time, we could both update each other on what we found in the game and the silly things that would randomly occur to us while playing.
My mom bought the game for me and her on my birthday for RDR 2 even though it was 2 weeks before release , she knows how much I loved the first one growing up and she preordered the second one for her, me, and my dad. My grandpa even associates red dead redemption two as a game that made my family happy, even he gets a kick out of the sound of the guns, and the animals realistically dying. These games are art. It literally transcends every generation of my family.
So basically the stranger in the mission, “I know you” is the personification of death or the grim reaper. He’s claims to be an accountant because of all the deaths he has to account for. He also mentions that people have damned him before which could also support this. In RDR2 this is supported by a cabin in the middle of the woods you can find that has an unfinished painting. All around the cabin there’s hints to who lives in the cabin, alongside a poem about a character you met with Arthur earlier in the story that can either live or die depending on your choice. If you keep coming back to the cabin you can see the painting is of the strange man and you can see him appear behind you in a mirror. There is also a man by a campfire that if you talk to him talks about a plague in Armadillo describing it as a curse. If you keep listening to his story he also begins to describe the stranger that was seen in the distance watching over Armadillo. The lore behind the stranger is kinda eerie but I love it.
Thank you for sharing. This video made me want to play RDR but sadly, not only was it never released on PC but it got pulled from Playstation Now and the emulation runs like shit on even high-end systems, so my i7 7700HQ and GTX 1060 won't be enough to cut it. Apparently the code is a huge mess and porting or remastering would be incredibly difficult. Guess I'll have to buy the PS3 disk on ebay and get the console out of storage.
I've never played a game with that much emotion before. While the ending tugs on your emotions, the mission where you ride your horse into Mexico and the beautiful songs plays is truly incredible
Graphics were incredible for 2010. Sound design was amazing. Voice acting was up there with everything else Rockstar's put out, that is to say it's incredible. The story ending in a way that shows that even if you do the right thing in the end, your sins will still follow you was at the time pretty unusual and tragically beautiful. It really felt like a Clint Eastwood movie. Like Unforgiven. So yeah. It's a masterpiece
Red Dead Redemption 1 and 2 are my favorite video games ever made. Both games are absolutely unforgettable, and to see the games get even more recognition is amazing to hear. John, Dutch, Uncle, andArthur Morgan are some of my favorite video game characters and are absolutely unforgettable.
I'm probably in the minority here but I hope a 3rd Red Dead doesn't get made. The two games are so great that I'm afraid of the possibility that one more might ruin the legacy. Not everything needs to be a trilogy.
@@tjjordan4207 I don’t think it’s an issue of if they’re gonna make another Red Dead game, but if they focus on the same characters. I’m always down for more Red Dead, but it doesn’t have to just be Redemption. They could still make another Cowboy game with different characters.
The moment you first enter Mexico and that songs plays will always be one of the most iconic moment in gaming history for me. The first time you play and you hear that guitar riff creep in as you make your way to your destination is just peak immersion for me, it was a moment I wish would never end.
I'm glad you haven't touched Red Dead Redemption 2 before doing the first one. You'll see, Red Dead Redemption 2 is a Masterpiece, with a capital M. Arthur Morgan is such an incredible protagonist, just like John was in the first one, the story is really beautiful, epic and emotional, the gameplay mechanics and the possibilities are insane, the open world beautiful and full of life, you'll have one hell of a time and since you already did the first one, it just hits special. Looking forward to your review, probably 8 years from now.
honestly even though 2 is a prequel its so much better played after 1 you know how bad dutch becomes and rockstar still manages to make him a deeply complex character
This is still probably my favorite game of all time. It was one of the only games I could convince my late father to sit down with me and play. You brought back some good memories Acting Mail Man
Funnily enough, I can say the exact same thing about my mom. She wasn't big on video games, but loved cowboys, and so one day she saw my playing it, and just watched me do so whenever I did.
@@thegermangal9120 funny story as well, my mom introduced me to Rockstar games. It all started with GTA 3 on the PS2. Still glad she showed that to me when i was young (even though she really shouldn't have seen it age wise 😂)
So happy to see you finally cover this amazing game. When I heard you had never played it before I was shocked. Especially when you admitted to not playing the sequel back in your top 10 games of the 2010s. I'm glad you recognize it's a masterpiece and included MANY details of the game that some people miss, including my favorite of the "I Know You" stranger mission. Fantastic review and I look forward to Undead Nightmare and Red Dead Redemption II whenever you get to it!
@@Retr-vc4wn Oh yes the story is great! I think I’m halfway through it. Doing my best on the honor part but think I accidentally did some things that might have dropped it lol
Heading Far Away for the first time as a kid immediately made me stop in my tracks, it was one of the first times I’d heard a song that made me feel something. It still gives me some pretty intense chills to this day, especially hearing it in context
It just hits different, that and that’s the way it is from rdr2 are some of the rare songs that make me feel that pure calmness but also a slight feeling of sadness.
The end of rdr still breaks me to this day. I replayed the final mission as John over and over again thinking that if I just shot enough men I could escape his fate and I was left in tears when I finally accepted the inevitable.
@@yeettiti3621 wait wait you are making fun of a guy on the internet for crying at pixels? YEP. You certainly are a comment in this comment section. I loved that I wasted your time reading this lul
RDR1 was ahead of its time The world blew me away with how alive it felt and all the activites like Liars dice and poker were great The Ragdoll Physics were amazing with how enemies reacted to being shot and the story was amazing. RDR2 gave me the same feeling when I played for the first time and is easily one of the greatest open worlds of all time.
That game when crossing into the Mexican Border and into Mexico is so amazingly performed....like seriously...riding a horse en el desierto, guitar strums and the sounds of a burro, a Spanish word for Donkey i think
I will never forget the first time you see the night sky. It was on Bonnie’s farm. I remember being in awe and knew right then I was about to play something special. Many great moments in the game.
I've been playing this game pretty consistently ever since it came out. Few things you didn't mention that I think add to the realism even more: 1.) Bison don't respawn like normal animals in the game. There's a certain number of them, and if you kill them, they're gone. 2.) Selling items to shops is dependent on the item and where you are. For example, if I skin an elk in the northern area and try selling it in Blackwater, I won't get nearly as much money as I would selling it somewhere in Mexico where elk don't exist. It's something small but definitely adds to the feeling of the "open world" being interconnected and different areas being unique. Also, there are some crazy cheats in the game, albeit not as crazy as GTA. One of my personal favorites is the one where people combust into flames upon shooting them lol
Something that stuck with me was how in Mexico John didn’t care who he was helping because men who seek power are all the same. That rebel girl was so starry eyed John emphasized with the pain she would go through as he used to be the same when following Dutch. It made me realize as a very young person to be wary of any that seek power.
Governments are well aware of this nowadays. They’re happy to have a young person play the part of “the rebel” as long as it serves their ends. All you gotta do is pay attention to which acts of “rebellion” are sanctioned by the mainstream and which are painted as “wrong”.
I love how Rockstar gave us a subtle nod to Jack's future in GTA 5. Inside Franklin's mansion there's a book titled "Red Dead" written by none other than a "J.Marston". Turns out Jack does end up becoming a writer, and writing about his dad, just like he wanted
Nothings more nostalgic than re-remembering playing your first Rockstar game. This game shapped my favorite playable character and NPCs even up to today. The story was a masterpiece and the game was a masterpiece. It's sad game companies don't put as much heart and soul into video games like these nowadays. RDR1 will truly stay an iconic masterpiece of a video game.
My first rockstar game was gta2 and err I’m not all that nostalgic for it to be honest. RedRed dead 2 is a phenomenal game. Most of rockstars other games are overrated as All fugk
I played this game the Summer before my senior year of high school. I remember playing a few missions each day and then having to go to work. At work, I would just think about what was going to happen next in the story like it was a TV show. It's funny, I knew as I was playing it I would have nostalgia from this game and 5 years later I can confirm. One of the greatest stories I've ever experienced.
Just restarted RDR2 with the intent to do all side missions and main storyline missions. All i have to say these games are proof that Gaming is art. Movies are like self driving cars Games allow you to take the wheel.
I usually fall in love with games that aren’t realistic looking Like games with art style But rdr2 is actually one of the rarest games where i actually loved it’s visuals I find realistic games to look boring but rdr2s world somehow managed to be unforgettable
@dudeguy3802 graphics doesn’t make a game better if you ask me It’s the story and characters that makes the journey all the more worth it Tho i will be honest rdr 1 graphics is kinda boring
I think my favorite thing in Rdr1 are the duels. I think R* absolutely nailed that feel you got when you were watching one of those classic spaghetti westerns. I was always impressed with how they implemented it into game.
29:30 Multiple recordings with different dialogue is also a feature in GTA V. It’s cool when you’re replaying a mission or just died and had to redo a section. It’s probably a feature in RDR2 as well
@@aceofspades8169yea and on the heist missions ,different crew choices have different lines. And no , i don't mean only the crew's past etc. In the 1st heist if you picked a cheap crew, when michael is talking with franklin he will say "cheap driver cheap gunman cheap hacker pretty much everything can go wrong" etc. There are also scenes with multiple starts/endings (1 even entirely different mission ) depending on who you start with / end with .
You know how there are those moments in some games where you see something, maybe a view from a mountain top, maybe some interaction you can have with an npc, whatever it might be, and you are so stunned by the level of detail and care in the game that you are at a loss for words. That happened consistently throughout RDR2, but the biggest one for me was seeing a snake slithering around outside if valentine, and before I could shoot it a hawk swooped down, picked it up and carried it off.
Had the same thing in oblivion once, outside skingrad. An oblivion portal had opened and an almighty showdown was taking place between the local guards and townspeople and literal demonic entities. And what should I notice but I’m the middle of this skirmish was a sheep whooping absolute demon ass . The sheep died but it died a hero . Its attention to detail like that that can be breathtaking at times
I hated that Ross was at the line up and targetable. Everything up to that point you could target and kill. I dumped all of my rounds into him only to have the cutscene playout the same. Would've removed him from the lineup entirely and just get gunned down by the army that you couldn't get. Let Ross smoke his cigar in the cutscene from the side having watched the whole thing playout knowing he had achieved his goal of wiping out the gang.
This opening has to be the best video ever made on UA-cam. Man I swear I wish I would’ve went into UA-cam to do stuff like this. Red dead redemption was freaking awesome ahead of its time.
Love how John, and Abigail marriage is portrayed. You can tell they love each other deeply. But due to personality, and their past They struggle to get where they are.
Red Dead Redemption (one) was my favorite of the two, I don't know why I just love everything about it. I hope Rockstar either releases an actual remaster of Red Dead Redemption, or they make an alternate Red Dead story based on the life of Landon Ricketts.
@LeonL47 I never really saw wokeness lol. For me, the pacing felt so slow at times in RDR2. RDR was more action packed which proved to be more fun but I fully admit that RDR2 has the way better story.
Yeah, I still prefer 1 over 2. Better, more subtle story, a more interesting villain, way better atmosphere. I like the characters more too but i can see why people would prefer 2's characters.
Some things I would like to point out: 1. There are cheat codes in the game, but they disable saving so it's mostly just for fun 2. There is another reticle I'm pretty sure, I think you had to swap to it in the options but it was definitely the default for online play. It's pretty much the same as the standard reticle but with a circle around the dot to better approximate bullet spread
@whine9495 you can save with cheats on but it disables any trophies and achievements, i only used them after finishing the game and used a seperate game file.
Red Dead Redemption 1 was one of my favorite games as a kid. It's like a very long and interactive Clint Eastwood movie while you feel like a badass in the combat sections. I played Red Dead Revolver when I was even younger and I just had pure excitement playing this game back then
This game was absolute mastery and came out at the perfect time, when Rockstar was at their creative peak and the games industry wasn’t utterly corrupted by monetization yet.
my girlfriend played the second one first not knowing the first games story just knowing it picked up where it left off after the events of red dead two I envy her to this day being able to experience the gangs down fall in chronological order was something truly moving to her she loved it and has been gaming ever since I would give anything to replay these for the first time
I’m currently doing a play through of rdr1, after completing rdr2. This series just makes you feel so many emotions throughout the events it’s mind blowing to see a story written so well it can affect your feelings in such a way. Thanks for finally making this review, I’ve been waiting for it. (:
29:36 if you ever play rdr2, they have multiple dialogue recordings depending on distance. one speaking normally and another shouting if you’re far away
I’m so glad you noted early on how amazing the soundtrack is. Easily in my top 3 video game soundtracks of all time. I remember playing RDR2 and thinking I really missed the soundtrack from the first Redemption. Then, you play the Jim Milton Rides Again Mission, and it all comes full-circle.
I love how when you first rescue John on the side of the mountain in RDR2, you get the theme from RDR1 as a whistle. If you wanted to dive deeper into that, you could say that it’s out of tune in that instance because John hasn’t fully become the man he is by the end, so his theme reflects that.
I know this is a relatively old upload, but 17 minutes in I have to praise the level of passion you put into these videos. It really helps when the creator shows they care about what they’re covering in a video.
One thing I noticed in GTAV, was that they also recorded multiple dialogue for missions, so if you died or had to quit and come back later, they would have slightly different conversations, or a different take of the same lines. It felt pretty interesting to hear that.
I remember when "Angry Joe" use to put this kind of love into his video game reviews. I am glad "The Act Man" doing video game reviews the entertaining way. Thank you.
i especially hate those discussion reviews like what happened to the show in angry joe show and hes doing more news and other random shit instead of reviews i’d rather watch a review for a game that came out years ago then that
@TheActMan My uncle and I enjoyed playing games from time to time... but this was the one game he really dove into. He grew up reading about cowboys and indians and still would read old western novels. We played everything from Donkey Kong to Gran Turismo but this... this was the last game we enjoyed before he passed away. He LOVED the immersion of the old west that he'd read about all his life and watched in tv shows like Deadwood, The Rifleman, and Bonanza. A true classic that should never be forgotten. Both the game, and Uncle Gary lol
i felt like i was one of the few who absolutely loved red dead revolver in my friend group as a kid. words can't describe how excited i was when i heard there was a sequel coming out. not even mentioning the fact that it spawned some of the greatest games of all time. i feel a sense of pride being there from the very beginning.
Foreal. Red Harlow was a badass. I was a little upset that he didn't return in Red Dead redemption, but John Marston ended up being another great character. On Xbox you can buy rdr revolver right now through the store. Instantly bought and replayed it

I love that you brought up the ragdoll physics, they're so memorable and so well done. Still my favorite to this day. They used very similar physics in GTA IV and it's always been disappointing to me that after these two titles, they changed for the worse 😕
@@confusedzebra3161 i remember seeing someone posted on reddit couple years ago that RDR2 still retains the GTA:SA animation(limbs will twitch if you shoot the corpse in gtasa) that sometimes the game will fall back to.
@@confusedzebra3161 I can't help but feel how red dead one is better in terms of physics, Also I noticed into you can't shoot someone in the knee and have them limp or shoot both knees and have them crawl like in the 1st one
I often say this, RDR is the best Wild West film I have ever played. The game mechanics never overstays their welcome and the story is among the most gripping for its time. When games were as interested as making an action-packed game but also telling a tale that's worthy to be heard and told. It never had an in-depth choice mechanic as much as other story driven games did but when you tell a good story in the first place, you don't need to compensate for choice.
My favorite line of dialog is when you encounter some guys at a campfire and they talk about Red Harlow (protagonist of Red Dead Revolver) and the things you did when you played as him. Red Dead Revolver was the first game I played back in elementary, so that was a nice callback.
When I was really young and still didn't really know how video games and save files worked, I remember playing through the WHOLE game again and again just to attempt to save John, hoping that maybe if I shot enough men I could get a different ending. John Marston was one of the first protagonists I really, truly connected with and was destroyed when I witnessed his fate, and that was as a kid. Another banger of a video Act Man, amazing work.
I can’t wait for him to play the 2nd game I love the first but the 2nd really changed a lot for me when I think about what I think is an immersive game, great video once again my man!
@@SpikeJet2736 It's really too bad it's so difficult to play today. No PC port, got pulled from Playstation Now, and the emulation runs horrifically bad. Top end graphics cards like the RTX series run it at like 20fps according to the research I did. @@mikeexits Yeah it's a damn shame. I understand why Rockstar can't port cause the code was a mess but if they actually cared and remade it one to one with the RDR2 engine, they would make so much money
the physics are actually something i am incredibly passionate about in every video game, for me it started with source and ESPECIALLY GTA4. gta4 and RDR1 both used the Endorphin engine (for lack of a better term, it is actually a 3D animation software, which makes it a "dynamic motion synthesis software"), an incredible physics engine for the time that would allow the active ragdolls to behave BEYOND ragdoll behavior. the creators of the engine made some really cool footage showcasing what exactly their engine does differently. A lot of it is that the ragdolls interact with the environment around them in realistic ways and manners, so for example, if the person was shot in the leg, and was near a table or trashcan, the character who was shot, would not be a *dead* registered ragdoll, but instead registered as an active doll. This allowed the the engines AI to kick in and made the active doll reach out to stabilize itself, walk in weird ways to gain balance, and flail to try and re-center its gravity, or generally behave in a realistic fashion. If I was shot in the leg, i would probably behave somewhat how the civs of Liberty City do in gta4, but i dont think i would run away like some of them can lol. Anyway, All of this was happening in tandem with the ragdolls properties having preset values. For example, there is a buff doll, fat doll, woman doll, and default doll. All of those dolls had a variety of weight, strength in particular limbs, mobility, and stability. Developers could change these things and add or remove new properties. This engine i could talk about even more, its my absolute favorite physics engine on the market, and it was WAY ahead of its time. I recommend looking up Cheekens video on it and reading the Pinned comment (lil snippit) " The only time you can experience walking around purely in the Euphoria state is when you are drunk in GTAIV." The developers went on to create the Euphoria engine which was used in LA noir, RDR2 and GTA5. Personally, i played around with it a bit. It was a lot easier to use, and way way less abstract. Euphoria to me however, felt heavier and carried less personality for lack of a better term. IDK to me, in gta4 when i bail out of a heli low to the ground, or jump out a car or off a bike at high speeds, get hit by a vehicle, flying trash can or shot in gta4, watching those reaction animations is way more fun and enjoyable/entertaining. i love them, they are a whole game on their own sorta like beam.NG. The same cannot be said for my experience in GTA5 or RDR2, RDR2 is a tiny bit more responsive to gunfire than gta5 but idk, something has felt off. Big example is gta5 jumping out of a car, you just slide on your face or back, how boring. Anyway love the video, just saw a segment about physics and i got way to excited
You're gonna love RDR2 whenever you get around to playing it. Would also highly recommend the Undead Nightmare DLC for the original RDR. It's probably the best piece of DLC I ever played in a video game.
Can’t wait to see what you think of Red Dead II, that is genuinely my favorite game of all time and probably has the best story of any game I’ve ever played
@@FlamespeedyAMV There was. If you had the Undead Nightmare disc you got access to the main multiplayer, and a special survival mode that to this day has left me with one of the best impressions of a zombies mode in any game to date. Best memory I have of that mode, one of my friends is being chased by a horde with no ammo and shouts "I don't wanna die a virgin!" Without missing a beat I shout back "Why were you looking at me when you said that?!" Needless to say, we failed because we were dying of laughter
I’m 16 and I’ve been playing this game for as long as I can remember so it took me awhile to beat and understand the story of this game but it was worth it because it’s so fun. After seeing the ending with Jack and Edgar Ross it was the perfect ending. It took me a couple years but perfect.
I always used to play this game when i couldn’t even complete the mission where you herd cows. Finished it years later and it’s still one of my favorite games of all time
Yup. One if the greatest endings in any video game I've ever played. Remember it clearly the first time I beat it. How after all that..losing John. Seeing Jack turn around. And walk away with the "RED DEAD REDEMPTION " Slap onto screen...and credits roll...Wow.
I've gone through RDR2 3 times at this point, and it still is as fresh as the first time. But this video made me excited to revisit the one that started it all. I had so many good times with this game, and from the looks of it, it still holds up even by today's standards.
From someone who was a long time Rockstar fan addicted to Midnight Club, and never gave Red Dead Redemption a fair chance until last year with Red Dead Redemption 2. Getting so emotionally invested into the prequel story and lore filled story of Arthur Morgan and John Marston. I had so much fun and felt so attatched, I literally cried at the ending of RDR2 and understood why it was a masterpiece. After beating it, I simply had to find out the rest of the tale with John Marston in RDR1. Needless to say, I cried again at the ending of RDR1 and kicked myself so much for not giving Red Dead a chance years ago, and made me realize Rockstar will never make another masterpiece like this again. This series I dare will say is MILES better than GTA's storylines. Thank you Rockstar for reminding me why I loved you guys so much years ago.
About the game having multiple lines of dialogue for one horse ride in a mission, gta4 did that too. I remember on one gta4 mission I kept getting blendered at the end and having to redrive from mission start to where I had to go. There was like, four selections of dialogue for each mission it was insane.
R* not making Undead Nightmare 2 is one of the most egregious crimes in gaming history if not the worst . . . Besides the fact it could've been just amazing, they could've made an absolute re-tarded amount of revenue from it via slapping a $15 price tag like the first one, ironically FAR more than whatever their fucking gold bars did 😖
@@MuRzeMoTions They kinda did when they mentioned that the red dead games had the BEST stories in gaming. Can’t really blame anyone for giving examples of other games that might have better stories. The whole point of a comment section is to discuss these things and express one’s own ideas. If you’re in the comment section of UA-cam… you most definitely have asked to read what somebody else wrote.
KCD developers also attempted this. Traveled the country and made the environment so realistic, it's amazing. Especially if you can hop into the car and just drive to those places to reminisce on how it used to look.
It pains me to know that you haven’t played rdr2, especially when you have this level of love for rdr. It excels in all of the subtle things that fans of video games as an art form will greatly appreciate. It’s as close to a perfect game as I’ve ever seen
I prefer to think of it as joyous that the man still has another great story to come in his future, another great world to explore, another great game to play. It would be a sad. cold world if that weren't true.
RDR2 has so much content that after playing for hundreds of hours, it feels like more of an experience afterwards. It's hard to imagine that game getting topped.
The thing that makes RDR such a masterpiece is its main theme of time. Time is always moving forward and has no regard for those who wish to live in the past (Dutch) or those who are struggling to move on (John). And if you can’t begin to swim you will start to drown.
16:04 A1 editing 😂 … And RDR2 is pretty much gameplay of some of the history you hear John talk about in RDR1. Although almost all of it is seen through the eyes of another of his gang members, Arthur Morgan. But John, Jack, Abigail and Uncle are still there from the beginning. Also a masterpiece imo. The world feels so alive, with ambushes, killing, kidnappings, robberies and much more you can just run into (in the form of random encounters) while riding your horse. E: I forgot how many random npc encounters there were in rdr1 until seeing this. And the custom clothing you can make from hunting was one of my favorite aspects of 2
@@CapinCrunch they both have their flaws and highs but frankly the fact that both are phenomenal games that I can play over and over means that’s what truly makes me consider it as one of my favorite series of all time
Currently on my first ever red dead 2 playthrough after not playing the first since it came out….. I’m constantly blown away by just how much depth there is to the world but most of all the characters
Late comment, but there’s something about the ending that gets overlooked a lot: When John opens the door of the barn, they don’t let you use any of your weapons except the shitty cattleman revolver. John could’ve worn his bounty-hunter clothing or any of the outfits that grant you bonuses to combat, but instead John goes out wearing his basic ranch clothing using the basic ranch hand revolver. He knows he’s going to die and he chooses to die as an honest rancher instead of as a shady bounty hunter. The bitter sweetness to his death is that he proves himself a redeemed man by going out as an hardworking man of honor defending his family. Those final small details are arguably some of the most important parts of the story’s conclusion. He couldn’t redeem his outlaw status, but he could (and did) redeem himself. He was able to achieve his dream of living out the rest of his life (albeit a short one) to the very end as a morally just and honorable man. Hence the “redemption” in “Red Dead Redemption.” Just in case anyone wanted to get even more emotional about it.
I have so many memories of just cruising along the desert and soaking in the atmosphere for hours in this game. Rockstar really did knock it out of the park for this one.
This is one of the few games I played start to finish without a break and I adored every moment of it. Genuinely a Masterpiece. Thanks Acting Bell male.
Combining the freedom of Grand Theft Auto with the chaos of the Wild West was one of those combinations that made so much sense you never dreamed it would happen. Rockstar not only attempted it, they did such a good job no one else has tried.
I remember interpreting it as the aiming system being the difficulty adjuster. At the low setting where it does the auto aim bot for you was really easy, when you turned it off it was immensely more difficult to aim and shoot correctly. But it’s been 12 years since I played it. I remember multiplayer being ridiculously easy, you just aimed, moved your stick up just a touch, and it was an instant headshot every time.
When I played this game i holstered Johns pistol and let the law kill him. In my head I remembered Jack's words (the day John Marston stopped shooting) felt poetic for some reason. The day John puts down his gun is the day he met his end.
NEED this man to play rdr2. if he liked the first this much I can't imagine how he'd feel about the second game that improves upon it in every single way
Except not really. He literally put the aiming mode to Expert because he doesn't like the game playing for him. RDR 2 is the epitome of gameplay being done for you. Switching to pure free aim is fundamentally discouraged in it's combat system. But that depends on how he feels about using aim assistance. Even mouse and keyboard aim is limited in RDR 2 story mode. I think RDR1 will set too much of a high bar for him to be anymore impressed by RDR 2 gameplay-wise. The only notable improvement of RDR2's gameplay is the hip fire. Even the ragdolls are WAY more limited and stiff than RDR1 which excelled in Rockstar's Euphoria physics.
Let me know if the wait was worth it!

Don't forget the fact that GTA and Red Dead are not in the same universe. That book is nothing but a reference so far.
@@themadtitan7603 personally I agree with the interpretation of Jack the outlaw, But only on the precondition that the federal agents figure out that one of their own was killed by Jack Marston. You don't just get the walk away from that and write a novel, and it would be a more fitting theme towards the cycle of violence and redemption
Something Red Dead redemption executed far better than the last of Us 2 because of choice.
it definitely feels like the book in GTAV was added to make people feel good about the ending and that it wasn't completely a pointless story (to some) but you don't have to kill Edgar. Though it did feel very satisfying doing it
@@Christmas_Johan People got away with murder all the time back then. Government officials too. Even in modern times it can happen. Just because it seems narratively appropriate to you doesn't mean it's the most likely outcome.
@@bandit6272 fun fact of the day clearance rates for murders have actually gone down since the 50s, though demographic variables exist
Although pre forensics & fingerprinting/DNA early 20th century I couldn't tell you what the clearance rate was.
Which would be kinda fitting
The same could easily be said about your interpretation of the ending. I just happen to find mine more thematically appropriate if Jack didn't perpetuate revenge.

Here’s a fun fact: John meeting with the Strange Man where he is buried also symbolizes who died at the end. The 3 shots he fired at the Strange Man represent Uncle, Abigail and John while when his gun jams, it represents Jack and how he’s the last one alive.

When playing as Jack you can hear him make a lot of one-liners when in a shootout, but he says things like, “why am I doing this?” when you kill someone and things like that.
That's fckn awesome
That’s awesome my and my grandpa played both together I played he watched and loved them a lot
This is awesome

I've been playing this game pretty consistently ever since it came out. Few things you didn't mention that I think add to the realism even more:
1.) Bison don't respawn like normal animals in the game.

My first was gta 4.

I had this same exact scenario with College and RDR2 this year
Just restarted RDR2 with the intent to do all side missions and main storyline missions. All i have to say these games are proof that Gaming is art. Movies are like self driving cars Games allow you to take the wheel.
100%. So true.

It’s the story and characters that makes the journey all the more worth it

Multiple recordings with different dialogue is also a feature in GTA V. It’s cool when you’re replaying a mission or just died and had to redo a section. It’s probably a feature in RDR2 as well
It is. But they also have a feature where you can change the topic of discussion on what happened in the story up to that point
It's also in GTA 4

Man the ending of red dead still gives me goose bumps to this day despite I beat it 12 years ago
The Act Man takes video games reviewing to a whole other level and I love it
Returning to this review after watching Act Man play RDR2, it’s intriguing and insane how much everything ties in together between this and RDR2.
This opening has to be the best video ever made on UA-cam. Man I swear I wish I would’ve went into UA-cam to do stuff like this. Red dead redemption was freaking awesome ahead of its time.
thanks! I appreciate the good vibes :)
Love how John, and Abigail marriage is portrayed. You can tell they love each other deeply. But due to personality, and their past
They struggle to get where they are.
Red Dead Redemption (one) was my favorite of the two, I don't know why I just love everything about it. I hope Rockstar either releases an actual remaster of Red Dead Redemption, or they make an alternate Red Dead story based on the life of Landon Ricketts.
same, loved the faster horse and john marstons player model in the first, it was just an arthur morgan reskin in the 2nd...
@LeonL47 wokeness?
Some things I would like to point out:
1. There are cheat codes in the game, but they disable saving so it's mostly just for fun

I love how when you first rescue John on the side of the mountain in RDR2, you get the theme from RDR1 as a whistle. If you wanted to dive deeper into that, you could say that it’s out of tune in that instance because John hasn’t fully become the man he is by the end, so his theme reflects that.
The introduction to this video was the best one you have ever made hands down. Phenomenal job Act Man.

Another banger of a video Act Man, amazing work.

the physics are actually something i am incredibly passionate about in every video game, for me it started with source and ESPECIALLY GTA4. gta4 and RDR1 both used the Endorphin engine (for lack of a better term, it is actually a 3D animation software, which makes it a "dynamic motion synthesis software"), an incredible physics engine for the time that would allow the active ragdolls to behave BEYOND ragdoll behavior. the creators of the engine made some really cool footage showcasing what exactly their engine does differently.
I recommend looking up Cheekens video on it and reading the Pinned comment (lil snippit) " The only time you can experience walking around purely in the Euphoria state is when you are drunk in GTAIV."
The developers went on to create the Euphoria engine which was used in LA noir, RDR2 and GTA5.
As someone who loves physic and rag doll. GTA V is the only one that really felt off IMO RD2 felt great with how much weight there was to the people.

The thing that makes RDR such a masterpiece is its main theme of time. Time is always moving forward and has no regard for those who wish to live in the past (Dutch) or those who are struggling to move on (John). And if you can’t begin to swim you will start to drown.
You should play RDR2. It goes to even greater depth of this theme

Man I wish i could experience RDR2 for the first time again. What a fkn masterpiece
Late comment, but there’s something about the ending that gets overlooked a lot:
When John opens the door of the barn, they don’t let you use any of your weapons except the shitty cattleman revolver.
Hence the “redemption” in “Red Dead Redemption.”
Just in case anyone wanted to get even more emotional about it.
John's voice is and always will be a top 5 out of all games in history when it comes to recognizability
I have so many memories of just cruising along the desert and soaking in the atmosphere for hours in this game. Rockstar really did knock it out of the park for this one.

I eagerly await your playthrough of RDR2. It's a masterpiece and by far my favorite game. Enjoy it as much as you can.
Yeah They really perfected the aiming in Maxpayne 3 feels both tight and smooth.
@@John-996 and then they completely messed it up with RDR2

He's already on it I think... So excited aswell as I have played Rdr2 about 7 times!
He'll hate the realism even more
Except not really.
