- Thumbnail concept art - using Procreate, Nomad Sculpt & Magma
Concept thumbnailing is a valuable skill employed in the art world, particularly in the early stages of the creative process. It involves creating quick, small-scale sketches or drawings called thumbnails to explore and develop ideas for a larger artwork or project. These thumbnails serve as visual brainstorming tools, allowing artists to experiment with various compositions, subject matter, and design elements before committing to a final concept. This week we are taking a look at how I use thumbnailing in my work and how I use different programs to do it. We will start with Procreate, then Magma and finish in in Nomad Sculpt.
The primary purpose of concept thumbnailing is to explore different possibilities & refine initial ideas. By creating a range of thumbnails, artists can visually test various arrangements, perspectives, proportions, and visual elements to determine what works best for their intended artistic expression. Thumbnails can also be used to experiment with different color schemes, lighting effects, and mood, helping artists develop a more comprehensive understanding of how these elements contribute to the overall impact of their artwork.
Moreover, thumbnails serve as a communication tool, allowing artists to share and discuss their ideas with clients, collaborators, or instructors. These small sketches can effectively convey the core concept and artistic direction, facilitating constructive feedback and collaboration throughout the creative process. Thumbnails are often presented as a series, demonstrating the progression of ideas and the decision-making behind the final concept.
Thumbnailing encourages experimentation, enhances the decision-making process, & ultimately contributes to the development of strong and compelling artworks.

Infinite Painter on iPad has a fill brush just like what you used in Magma
Brilliant. I hadn’t spotted that but I’ll try it today. Many thanks! Pinned for everyone else
This is so freak'n cool! I will definitely stay tuned. Is there a mech character course? I would love to learn how to make different types of mechs in nomad
Awesome video - always great to see your processes, and am looking forward to jumping on the next course!
Cheers Dan. There will be beta access this week I think
Glen, if you haven’t tried alchemy, I think you’re in for a real treat. It has the same fill lasso, and a slew of tools for creating interesting shapes and silhouettes quickly
I loved the Nomad part, I'll have to try it out! :)
I am glad you like it - let me know how you get on.
@@SouthernGFX no te same approach, but since I'm travelling, I started sculpting with it. I'm pretty much liking it a lot. I need to get used to the differences with Zbrush, but it's very smooth for modeling really :)
i do all my concepting in Concepts. It's vector-based and has a real clean interface. It's got the lasso brush if that's what you like :) As well as an infinite canvas which is great for...well...concepting. And perspective lines. (you can basically use it on any device)
I do use it on the ipad and I agree it’s amazing.
Cracking stuff mate!
Thank you, glad you think so.
Really good thx a lot
No problem!
Great stuff!
Thank you
great video.jama quick shape for blender would really work well in this process
Thanks for great tutorial :)
Art studio pro has a great fill tool auswell. Extremely good photoshop substitute aswell
I tried downloading the brushes from your resource pack to test the thumbnails out and only one of the brushsets came through. Looks like the file may be corrupted?
Sorry but I can't stand to watch a procreate made tutorial. it's just the fact that PRO artists are using a $12 drawing app with a super expensive iPads and Apple pens is just ridiculous to me. I bet its a great one, it's just me .
