@@zemotika This was 425 at most. The big plate is a 100 lb. plate. 2 other 45's on each side. 2x100 + 4x45 + 1x45(the bar) = 425. How the hell you calculate 495?
I was expecting to see one "dead rep" off the floor and the remainder as "touch and go" reps with Tom's ballistic reputation. But no! That was the real deal!
425lbs for 17reps, you can see at min. mark .03 seconds in, there are 2-45 plates and one 100lb (middle) plate on one side, + the other side + 45lb bar + 2 spring collars (which is roughly .5-.75lb each = 425-426lbs total. i'm old school and this is what i grew up with, can't beat it imho, absolutely love it. platz got me focused on legs. what a beast quadfather was.
they don't understand what a deadlift is. Even calling it a SLDL would be a stretch. He was an otherworldly squatter. His deadlift leverages just aren't phenomenal when you look at them in comparison. No wonder he wasn't such a huge fan of them.
Tom has a very unusual deadlift technique, it's not really a normal deadlift but not really a RDL either it seems to be a hybrid of sorts, his back is parralel to the floor like on a RDL
Love this guy, I used his Big Beyond Belief (see his shirt) training book back in the 90s. Got me to 205-210 lbs at 10%ish body fat at 5'10". It was awesome. I was stronger than any other time in my life too. He was the quintessential bodybuilder. He didn't have the genetics of some of the other guys, but he grinded until he was big enough to be on that stage. He was always about volume and weight and getting it done.
This is the classic bodybuilding deadlift, its perfect for the back. Now, Powerlifters like Ronnie, start in a lower position and uses more legs at the start to lift the heaviest.... Both are deadlifts. The purpose is different, one is to work your back, the other to lift as much weight as you can. Which makes perfect sense. You start at a lower position to involve legs at the starts because legs are way way stronger than your lower back at the starting point plus the hand position is closer to the legs at the start.... (reduces range of motion and avoids biceps and elbows injuries) I love deadlift, its amazing, I am 48 still lifting heavy on deadlift....
This is really insane. But it does help if someone is shorter like him, much less knees bending and floor is closer. I usually dont lift more than 100kg and never touch the ground during sets, so i dont need to bend my knees completely every time.
High volume
High intensity
High frequency
High protein

You forgot one thing: rest
Probably less gear than people these days.
He trained legs like once per 10-14 weeks, that is high frequency, really?

Just crazy his form for that kind of weight, but he's built like a truck what do you expect.
Looks like it was 5 plates… so 495 for 17 reps INSANE

Back when bodybuilders were actually strong. To see someone take a heavy weight and do high reps with good form, that is pure bodybuilding mastery.

Heavy deadlifts for high reps might be even harder than heavy squats for high reps

Nah squats are way harder the legs require the most amount of oxygen in the whole body thats why you get so extremely tired doing them
